Nashville, TN (March 26, 2008) – Richard Johns will return to his short-track, late model stock car roots this weekend when he competes in the 2008 Georgia Asphalt Series (GAS) season opening event at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, GA.

Johns will be behind the wheel his No. 43 Schoenfeld Headers/Bilstein Shock Absorbers Ford Fusion in the 100-lap main event when the race takes the green flag at 7 p.m. Saturday evening. He will be joined by teammate Wes Burton in the No. 44 Richard Johns Motorsports team entry at Peach State this weekend.

“I love racing a late model stock car,” said Johns, who competed in 15 NASCAR Busch (now Nationwide) Series events last season. “I haven’t been able to do that as much as I have wanted to the past couple of years, so any time I can get behind the wheel of one of those cars at a fast, action-packed track like Peach State, I’m all for it.”

Johns will join a stellar field of drivers that includes Russell Fleeman, the 2007 GAS Series champion, along with Bubba Pollard, Michael Pope, Kyle Fowler, David Elliott and former GAS champion Fredrick Moore just to name a few.

“The GAS Series is extremely competitive with a ton of good drivers and pro late model cars battling it out at each event,” Johns stated. “It will be really tough to win this weekend because Peach State can be a real hard place to get around. Things happen pretty quickly there and if you’re not on your game, you can wind up in a big wreck in a heartbeat.”

Johns, who will compete in the NASCAR Camping World East Series this year as a teammate to Bobby Hamilton, Jr. at Sadler-Hamilton Racing, will be looking to run up front when the field roars off into Turn 1 on the Peach State half-mile oval Saturday night.

“Any time I get in a race car, I want to win,” said Johns. “While we’re definitely looking forward to the NASCAR Camping World season and competing for Sadler-Hamilton Racing, we’re not looking past this weekend at Peach State. We had a good test there with our late model recently and our shop is literally right across the street from the racetrack. If we win, we won’t have far to take the trophy home.”

The 2008 GAS season-opening weekend at Peach State gets underway with a practice Friday evening from 5:30-8 p.m. Saturday’s action will get underway with practice from 1-3 p.m. Practice for additional divisions included in the show will run from 3:45-5 p.m. before GAS qualifying hits the track at 5:45 p.m.

Racing action is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

Peach State Speedway is located off I-85 at Exit 140. Grandstand admission to the multi-division show is just $12 for adults.
