Terry Cook Finishes 19th after Running in Top-Five Late at Kansas
Integrity Sports Marketing, LLC Press Release
Kansas City, Kansas (April 26, 2008) - Terry Cook had the No. 60 Wyler.com Toyota running in the fifth position with just a handful of laps left in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250, but an engine problem with just five laps to go forced a late race visit to pit road and relegated Cook to a disappointing 19th-place finish. As a result, Cook dropped four positions in the points to 14th.
“We did everything we could today, but something outside of our control got us,” Cook said. “There was no warning, but on that restart we had some smoke out of the pipes. We were going to try to go to the end without stopping because there was no oil coming out, but NASCAR wanted us on pit road to check it out. The last couple of laps I could tell it wasn’t going to make it much longer.
“It’s a real shame because we had a great truck and the guys did an awesome job,” Cook continued. “We had a problem on pit road and had to go to the back of the longest line for one restart but John (Quinn, crew chief) went with it and changed the race strategy and worked it to our advantage. For our first time working together in that capacity and to be in the top five within the last five laps of the race really says something. There are a lot of positives to take away from today even though we didn’t get the finish we wanted.”
Quinn’s post-race diagnosis was a broken piston in the engine.
“Usually when they blow smoke out the pipes and there’s no oil coming out of a hole in the engine it’s a piston,” he said. “It’s a shame it had to happen, but we’re also fortunate that if it had to happen it happened as late as it did. We were still able to get a top 20 finish. It could have happened on lap 2 and we could have finished last so at least it wasn’t that bad.”
Cook might want to complain about the jolt of bad luck, but he has a rule that he will enforce among his Wyler Racing teammates.
“I have a rule that you can only complain about the bad things until midnight the day of the race, so we’ll be upset about it until midnight tonight and then move on,” Cook said. “With Charlotte coming up we don’t want to lose focus because we had a little bad luck here in Kansas.”
Cook sits 14th in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship standings, just one point behind Erik Darnell for 13th and 32 points outside of the top ten.
Next up for the Cook and the Wyler Racing team is the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte. Round six of the 2008 season will take the green flag shortly after 8 P.M. Eastern on Friday May 16, and will be televised live by SPEED. The race will also be broadcast live on selected affiliates of MRN Radio and will be carried live on Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128.
