ASA Southeast Tour Crowns New Winner With Tim Russell
New Series No Match For Talented Super Late Model Driver
51 Sports Press Release
LONGWOOD, FL (May 5, 2008) – Name any track and any series in the state of Florida and chances are Tim Russell has won there. There is no question that Tim Russell is one of the Kings of the competitive Florida Super Late Model world. This week he added a regional series to his list of victories, as Russell walked away the winner in the latest ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour event at USA International Speedway.
“It was a fun weekend,” said Russell. “It was a different challenge. We weren’t quite sure how the rules were going to play out with the new series and the Super Late Models running in it, but it seemed to be pretty fair after the officials added some weight.
“We went out there and practiced, and our car drove the same, even with the weight on it. We were pretty fast and ended up fifth in qualifying. We felt good about our car, and we were looking forward to the race.”
Russell had reason to feel good. USA International Speedway, or Lakeland as it is commonly known, is a track that the talented drive has quite a bit of experience on. He has won there before, both in the Super Late Model and the Late Model, and now he can add another to the list.
“We had worked on the car all day during practice on Friday, trying to get the car set up for the long runs. We had a pretty good piece to race with. We knew that it was going to come down to tire management on who would win the race.
“We were able to save our tires and come away with the win. The race really came down to saving your tires and avoiding the lapped traffic. There were a lot of cars that showed up, and when you have that many cars, there is going to be some lapped traffic, so you just had to try and avoid it.”
Any race that has close to 40 cars show up for it is going to have quite a bit of competition. And all that competition can at times be an advantage while at other times, a disadvantage.
“We actually used it to our advantage to pass (Jeff) Choquette back for the lead, but then another time it almost cost us the win when a car spun out on the backstretch and the caution came out. All the drivers didn’t see the caution and someone got into us a little bit, but luckily all we had was some nose damage, and we were able to regain our spot and come home with the win after that.
“I’d put our guys and our team up against any team in the country. Our Rinnai team worked really hard, and they have been working hard back in the shop and make it look easy. We were able to come back from an off weekend for us and come out strong out of the box this past weekend.”
Tim will have a few days to celebrate his victory but then it’s right back to racing, as he will be back on the track this Friday for the next Sunbelt Series event.
“This weekend we are heading to Orlando SpeedWorld for the Sunbelt Series race,” added Russell. “We had some things happen to us that prevented us from being able to bring home the victory last time in the Sunbelt Series, so we are going to work hard to bring home another win this coming weekend in the Sunbelt Series.”
Tim Russell will be back in action this Friday, May 9th, at Orlando SpeedWorld when the Sunbelt Series returns to racing action.
