(BRISTOL, TN) – In 2007, Wade Day qualified a disappointing 20th in his first USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series appearance at Concord Motorsport Park. He quickly showed strength at the unique North Carolina ˝ mile tri-oval by surging to the lead before a problem in the pits cost him 6 laps ending any chance at victory. This year, at the Racing Electronics 250 presented by BTS Tire & Wheel Distributors, Day proved that he and his Lopez Wealth Management Ford were ready to race by capturing his first career Pro Cup Pole with a new track record time of 16.008 seconds.

“We came to Concord on Thursday to test and the car was pretty good,” Day said from his Bristol, Tenn. race shop. “We were good last year and came back with a similar setup.”

As the drivers were introduced, lightning flashed across the sky. “We were thinking we may have a race to halfway,” said Day. At the drop of the green, Day pulled away from the field to take a comfortable lead. During a caution at lap 60, several of the top contenders pitted for tires. Day gambled that the rain was on the way and stayed on the track. “The guys were telling me that it was raining all around us, and I could see the lightning in the distance while I was going down the backstretch.” After leading 143 of the first 150 laps, Day was forced to pit for tires, giving up the race lead.”

“Our car was really good on the first run,” said Day, “but it was really tight with the new set of tires.” At the next caution, Day decided to pit to add fuel and make an adjustment. He was fighting through the field, climbing back to sixth place when the rain started to fall.

As the spectators and crews headed for cover, it became clear that the rain would not stop in time to complete the remainder of the race and it was made official at 205 laps.

“We had a car that was good enough to win, but we made a gamble that the rain would come earlier. We probably would have pitted about 40 laps earlier had the rain not been all around us. That’s racing. I can’t be too disappointed, the car was very good and it is still in one piece as we get ready for Milwaukee.”

Day’s sixth place finish propels him to third place in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division.

The USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series returns to action on May 31st at the Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, WI, for the Sears Auto Center 150. Day is no stranger to the Milwaukee Mile, having competed there in the ASA National Touring Series and NASCAR Busch Series.
