RACING PERSPECTIVES

A Driver's Journal
by Lyndon Amick-BGN Driver and Staff Writer
10/23/2002

Hello Racing Fans!

I sat down this week to write this and I have to admit, I had a hard time figuring out what to say. I’m not racing every week right now, so I can’t give you a play-by-play of the last weekend’s racing activities, and that’s not really what I wanted to do anyway. It’s easy to give people cookie-cutter information about my racing career and me, but you can find that anywhere. I think it would be more fun for everybody, including myself, if we dug a little deeper than that.

I didn’t make the trip to Memphis last weekend with the Busch Series and had the time to be out and about in my 1967 Camaro. I love old muscle cars. It’s not like I have a garage full of them, but there’s always tomorrow. I bought it about two years ago and it’s red and black and in great condition. It’s a tough car and it’s cool to tool around town in. Not that I sit around contemplating these things, but have you ever thought about what kind of car you would be if you had to choose?

I’m partial to General Motors (let’s keep this between you and me for now); I don’t know why. It’s kind of the way I grew up I guess. I’ve always had General Motors cars, so that’s where I’d start. I would say that I would be a Chevelle, a 1969 Chevelle. Probably blue with white racing stripes, but maybe black. Blue’s my favorite color. I would have all the fancy hubs and all that stuff. Fixed out! No fuzzy dice hanging off the rear view mirror though and definitely no checkered flags or anything like that. I’d be just a good, nice fast car.

While we’re on the subject of dream cars, let’s talk about something most of us could probably use right now, a perfect vacation. My ideal vacation would be to go to Bora Bora for a week. Bora Bora is in the French Polynesian Islands south of Tahiti and basically, the Tahitian islands are mountain peaks that you only see maybe one tenth of sticking out of the water. Then it goes down 10,000 feet to the bottom of the ocean. So, these peaks are sticking out and those are the islands that everybody lives on. They’re surrounded by coral reefs so the water in between the island and where the coral reef is, is only about 25 feet deep. It’s perfect for snorkeling. It’s crystal clear and there are a ton of fish there, they’re everywhere.

Right on the other side of that coral reef is water that is about 10,000 feet deep. You can swim right up to the coral reef. Snorkeling is kind of my favorite thing to do on vacation, and it would be great to go there and to have a bungalow by the water, sit back, relax and eat fattening foods for a week and snorkel every day, three or four times a day. I think about Bora Bora every day, I really do. I went there on my honeymoon and it was an overwhelming experience.

I’ve also been to Alaska, which was pretty cool. I went fishing for a week when I was about 12 years old. I got homesick and missed my mom. It was a lot of fun, it was neat and it was a traumatic experience. I went with my dad and my brother and some other friends of ours. We stayed in tents for a week and fished every day, so that was interesting.

I’ve never been overseas. That’s something I want to do, go to Europe and just kind of tool around. I really want to travel. I want to see Rome. I’m really intrigued by the Roman Empire and all the stuff that went on with that. So, obviously I’d like to go to Italy and I’d like to go to the United Kingdom, and probably to Germany. I like World War II history. I’m kind of a war buff, and I’d like to see some of that stuff. I’m also part German, so it would just be kind of neat to visit that country.

I guess I should wrap it up and tend to a little bit of racing stuff since that is what this site is all about Like I said earlier, I didn’t go to Memphis, but the No. 15 Sunrise Farm Fresh ppc Racing Ford will head to Atlanta Motor Speedway this week. I think I mentioned last week that we tested there several weeks ago, ran both qualifying laps and spent a lot of time in race trim. I’m looking forward to going and I think we have the potential to be pretty good. I’ll fill you in on the details later.

Until next time,
Lyndon
