GFBF EDITOR'S FLAGS

It's Vegas baby! Things got hot and heavy last weekend as the Sprint Cup Series took to the track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The end result had Carl Edwards back flipping over his second win in just two weeks.

The COT has definitely improved the racing we have seen thus far this season, but we have also seen some pretty hard hits, taken by some of the sport's most talented drivers. Among them were Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch.

While all checked out ok, it's safe to say that there are definitely a few sore muscles milling about the garage area.

Roush has always been strong at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and last weekend was no exception. Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards both took a shot at the lead before Kenseth spun out after he and Jeff Gordon overtook Dale Earnhardt Jr. on a restart. Kenseth would go on to finish 20th, Gordon would wind up in the garage and Earnhardt Jr. would go on to finish second to Carl Edwards who had the field covered in the late stages.

“It was a great car," Edwards began. "We just had a great Ford Fusion and I’m starting to agree with Jack. He told me this week he’s gonna start making Bob wear a helmet and I asked him why and he said because the stuff that’s going on between his two ears is really important and we need to protect it. Bob’s a smart guy and I’m just proud to be driving this race car, but a little bit of trouble on pit road – got a penalty – had to start at the end of the longest line, and then at the end I was extremely nervous. I thought we were gonna receive another penalty for a tire that got away and NASCAR made a judgment call in our favor after looking at the tape. I believe it was the right one and I’m just very grateful for them looking at that and giving that to us."

Heading into Atlanta, Edwards sits atop the point standings over Kyle Busch, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman and Kevin Harvick. Stay tuned folks, the action is just warming up. Atlanta should prove quite interesting on several fronts, especially for those teams struggling to make it into the top 35 in points.

Black Flag to several hard crashes at LVMS.

I am not sure what the reason was here, but LVMS sure sent several drivers home with some severely bent sheet metal, as well as some sore muscles and bruises.

The impacts by Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart looked especially tough, with Gordon's radiator being torn from the car and landing several feet from his battered machine. While everyone checked out ok, it has certainly raised its share of controversy, as Hendrick Racing issued demands that the retaining wall that Jeff Gordon made impact with be reinforced for safety before the series returns there to race.

The track responded by stating that the walls should be installed by the time the CTS hits the track in September.

This is certainly a solid idea. Gordon's impact with the wall was frighteningly violent and one of the hardest I have seen in quite some time. It points out the need for the safer barriers in more than just certain areas of the racetrack.

Green Flag to Travis Kvapil for a nice top 10 showing at Vegas.

Checking out the top 10 at Vegas, the finishing order is peppered with Roush and Childress machines. Low and behold, Kvapil ran a quiet race but posted a solid finish for Yates racing and the return of the number 28. <

“We had a great test here last month. We knew we were gonna be decent. Our car was awesome last week, we just didn’t get the results. We were kind of handicapped starting 29th after being the first car out to qualify. That always kind of sets you back, but we took two tires on that first stop and were a little bit conservative with our setup in the beginning of the race after some changes we made overnight. The car didn’t have the speed it had yesterday in practice, so we kind of undid those things and got four tires on it and the car took off. We were able to drive up through the pack and get back on the lead lap with the lucky dog and just tried to stay clean and work our way up through there all day. We just tried to stay solid and be smart.” 00293
