Main Event May
Drivers Discuss Significance Month Holds for the Racing World Breaking Limits Marketing, Press Release
May 7, 2008) – It’s tough to beat the month of May if you’re a race fan. Most professional motorsports series host competitions of “main event” status while grassroots levels of racing also host major events. An example, Lowe’s Motor Speedway (LMS) in Concord, North Carolina hosts the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ Sprint All-Star Challenge on May 17. One week later, enthusiasts are treated to the Formula One Series’ top billing, the Grand Prix De Monaco in the city streets of Monte Carlo. The same day, the Sprint Cup Series competes in the Coca-Cola 600 at LMS and IndyCar’s crown jewel, the Indianapolis 500, is held. Drivers discuss the month of May.
John Andretti, Open Wheel and NASCAR Sprint Cup Veteran:
“There is probably no month better than May. As a kid, for me, that’s all there was. It was the month of May and that meant everything in my family. I went to school just blocks away from the speedway, and that's what you call it, it’s just ‘the speedway’- everyone knows where you are talking about. Growing up, kids were jumping out windows, cutting class, just to get down there to see what was going on. Every day there is something happening. It consumes the entire month.
“Today, you’ve got so many options. There is the Indianapolis 500, the Coca-Cola 600 and many great events at your local track. It’s Memorial Day weekend and it’s a defining time in motorsports. It’s great for all fans. I enjoy knowing in Indianapolis history is made each year. That’s special.”
Marc Mitchell, Driver of the #15 Ergon Toyota Tundra:
“There’s a lot of history that will be written this month. If you have any appreciation for cars, there’s no reason for you to leave your TV. May’s the only time of the year that holds this many prestigious events. Each race series has one of their biggest events that month. It’s definitely an exciting time for race fans. All of those races, the All-Star Challenge, the (Coca-Cola) 600, the Indy 500 and the Grand Prix De Monaco are going to be a thrill to watch. Those are the kind of races that drivers and teams will do whatever it takes to win.
“Most races, you’ve got to think about the championship and race for points. Racing in May, you race for the win. It’s worth gambling if it can bring you a trophy. You’ll definitely see drivers going all out and holding nothing back.”
Bobby Labonte, NASCAR Sprint Cup Veteran:
“They used to call the Coca-Cola 600 the ‘World 600’ and that probably says a lot. A race that has the word, ‘world’ in it, must be it’s pretty big. You just knew every May was going to be an important month because of that race. Later, adding the Sprint All-Star race, and you had the start of something special.
“Today, it’s an entire week that is similar to the events at Daytona. The Food Lion Speed Street event is huge for the city of Charlotte. I do appearances for General Mills and my crew does appearances. We’re running the All-Star race, the Coca-Cola 600 and it quickly becomes a pretty busy month. The races are prestigious and it’s all centered in Charlotte. It can be a strain, but at the end of the month the beaches open, so it’s pretty cool.”
