Denny Hamlin’s Pit Crew Has Redeeming Stop

Tilton/Getty Images Denny Hamlin’s championship hopes were in dire jeopardy early in Sunday’s race, when the rear tire changer’s air gun knocked off the valve stem and flattened the tire, forcing Hamlin to return to the pits. Hamlin twice went a lap down to race winner Kevin Harvick, only to get the laps back as the “lucky dog,” the highest-scored lapped car. But when Hamlin needed a strong performance from his crew late in the race, the over-the-wall gang was up to the challenge. Moffitt, the Michael Waltrip Racing development driver is expected to drive the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford in Sunday’s Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway, sources tell CATCHFENCE.com An announcement is expected as early as Wednesday. Moffitt will fill-in for David Ragan whose subbing in the No. 18 Toyota Camry at Joe Gibbs Racing for the injured Kyle Busch. Sources close to the situation say that Moffitt’s contract with Michael Waltrip Racing does not forbid him from driving for another manufacturer, despite MWR’s tight relationship with Toyota.
