(Jan. 12, 2012) — Mikey Kile is eager to build on last year’s breakthrough season by the ModSpace Ford and Andy Belmont Racing (ABR) at the season-opening Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at the Daytona International Speedway.

“I can’t wait to get the season going,” Kile said. “They’ve really set the bar high at Andy Belmont Racing, so it’s a tremendous challenge to take it to the next level. I believe our ModSpace team will come out of the blocks fast. This race team will start the year in full stride.”

Kile joins the team that won the prestigious Bill France Four Crown Award, finished fifth in ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards driver points with Chad McCumbee and sixth in car owner points.

The Westlake, La., native won a race and finished fifth in driver points in 2010 while driving for Bill Venturini.

The February 18th race at Daytona has been the traditional ARCA Racing Series opener since 1964 and Belmont as been coming to the World Center of Racing as a driver or owner since 1985. Team owner Jennifer Belmont has been fielding cars at Daytona since 1992. She believes Kile has the talent and desire to make ModSpace and Andy Belmont Racing a championship contender.

“I’m confident we’ll be in the championship hunt all year,” Belmont said. “Mikey is the driver I believe can make us a contender in our flagship car. He’s always been fast at Daytona, so we’re confident he will get us off to a good start. Everyone on this race team has spent a lot of hours making sure he will have a good car. Mikey will do the rest.”

Mikey Kile

Kile isn’t the only change at Andy Belmont Racing. Belmont chose Jeff McClure to sit atop the pit box as crew chief for Kile and the No. 1 Modspace team in 2012. The team interviewed many top contenders for the position and McClure fit the Andy Belmont Racing program.

ModSpace (http://www.modpace.com) returns as the primary sponsor for ABR for the third consecutive season.

Daytona is the biggest race of the ARCA season, and the list of former winners includes: Benny Parsons, Kyle Petty, Tim Richmond, Mike Wallace, Ryan Newman and Kyle Busch.

Belmont is ready for his 28-year-old driver to add his name to that list.

“ModSpace is always excited to start the season at Daytona,” William Mann, vice president of ModSpace Motorsports, said. “The history and energy that comes with this historic track always creates an exciting race! We are looking forward to seeing Mikey get behind the wheel the No. 1 ModSpace Ford and deliver a top-notch finish.”

“The entire team had a successful test at Daytona and they came back with a lot of notes to make the car even better,” Kile said. “This is an exciting time for everyone involved with this ModSpace race team. We’re all eager to get it started at Daytona. We will also be testing a new car at Talladega Superspeedway at the end of this month. ”

Team haulers will arrive at Daytona on Tuesday, February 12. Following a day of inspection on February 13, Kile will practice on February 14 and qualify a day later. The 80-lap main event is February 16 at 4:30 p.m., and it will be broadcasted live on SPEED.

International Speedway

“Brandon McReynolds eyes first start at Daytona in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200″

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Two-time Daytona 500 winning crew chief Larry McReynolds, who serves as an analyst on the NASCAR broadcast team for FOX Sports, watched over his son Brandon as the annual three-day ARCA Racing Series test session kicked off on Friday at Daytona International Speedway.

Approximately 60 drivers are participating in the test session in advance of the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season opener on Saturday, Feb. 18, the kick-off event to the stock car portion of Speedweeks 2012.

The 20-year-old McReynolds is turning laps at the “World Center of Racing” in the No. 4 Chevrolet for Turner Motorsports as he prepares for his first start on the 31-degree high banks of Daytona International Speedway.

McReynolds participated in the ARCA test two years ago with Eddie Sharp Racing, but didn’t have plans at the time to compete at Daytona. This year’s test is different. He knows he’s preparing for his Daytona debut in the upcoming 80-lap, 200-mile event.

“It’s a little more serious,” McReynolds said. “We’re always looking for speed. I think you got some guys out here laying down some PR laps. That’s not what Turner Motorsports is about. We’re down here for a legit test to see how fast we can go with what we’re going to be racing. I think we got a good piece.”

In background of the test is Brandon’s father Larry McReynolds, who won the Daytona 500 serving as the crew chief for Davey Allison in 1992 and Dale Earnhardt in 1998.

“When we won the 500 here with Davey in 1992, Brandon was not even a year old,” Larry McReynolds said. “He was Davey’s godson. I’ve got pictures of him in Victory Lane wrapped up in a baby’s blanket. It’s pretty cool to see him make laps here.”

During this week’s test, McReynolds stays at a distance but is always ready to offer advice to his son.

“He’s been racing since he was seven,” McReynolds said. “I’ve always played a huge role in his racing whether it was paying the bills or running the race team. We did that for a number of years with our own stuff. But Steve Turner and Turner Motorsports are giving him a great opportunity with great people.

“It’s actually kind of neat just being down here and being dad and just listening on the radio. At the end of the day, I can look at him and tell him things that I heard or saw or this is something you might want to think about. I do not want to be a meddling dad. I want to be here and support him and the race team and enjoy watching his career grow.”

Brandon McReynolds is unsure of his 2012 plans but hopes it will be at Turner Motorsports.

“We’re still working on it. I hope to be over at Turner Motorsports. I really enjoy working with those guys. They’ve let me do some testing over the offseason and I ran Talladega with those guys. I feel like I’ve got a really good home over there. We’re working away on it. It takes sponsorship to make race cars go around these days and we’re working on it. We’ll see what happens.”

Alli Owens

Owens returns to the track as a mom: Daytona Beach native Alli Owens had a one of the biggest smiles in the garage during the first day of testing.

The 23-year-old Owens, who attempted to qualify for the February NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at DIS, sat out the majority of the 2011 season to have a baby. After giving birth to a daughter in October, Owens is ready to return to the track.

“It’s huge,” Owens said. “I just had a baby a couple of months ago. To be able to come back out here after everybody pretty much wrote me off . . . it seems like if you’re a mom, you’re done.”

During the test, Owens is driving the No. 1 Ford for Andy Belmont Racing and is planning on making her fourth career start in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200.

Her husband Paul Chodora, who works for a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team, is serving as her crew chief for the test.

Owens, with sponsorship from Baby Jock, is only scheduled to compete in the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 but is exploring opportunities in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series for 2012.

“I was nervous,” Owens said of having a baby and then returning to racing. “It’s never been done before. You never see females who decide to have a family come back and be successful in the sport. We’re trying to do something that hasn’t been done before.

“To be back out here this year, it’s been even more special because I am a mom and now I’m getting the respect of being a parent and a driver.”

ARCA testing continues on Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A section of the Oldfield Grandstands will be open free to the public with access available through the lobby of the Daytona International Speedway ticket office.

Tickets for the 54th running of the Daytona 500 and other Speedweeks 2012 events are available online to www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

The former South Daytona resident and new mother is scheduled to return to the ARCA Series and participate in today’s test session at Daytona International Speedway.

The 23-year-old driver missed most of the 2011 season to have a baby.

“It’s so weird when women get pregnant and people around them think, ‘OK, that’s her life now, as a mom,’ ” Owens said. “They forget we have careers.

“It’s a little unfair to think if a woman has a baby, that from that point forward, all she will be is a mother. Being a mom was part of the plan, and now I want to go back out and race.”

Alli and her husband, Paul Chodora, who live in Charlotte, were joined by Braelynn Chodora — 19 1/2 inches long; 6 pounds, 13 ounces — in October.

Now back to full strength, Owens — who has 32 career ARCA starts — will be driving Andy Belmont’s No. 1 Ford.

“The last time I was in a racecar was my attempt to make the Truck (Series) race at Daytona in February,” Owens said.

Owens raised the money to race with a grass-roots program, but she failed to qualify for the 100-lap season-opening event.

When Owens started sending out feelers for a 2012 NASCAR or ARCA ride, Belmont was one of the first people on the phone with the new mother.

“Set to hit Daytona’s high-banks in No. 14 CGS Imaging Ford Fusion”

Andy Belmont Racing (ABR)

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (February 7, 2011) – While John Ferrier may not be a familiar name among ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards regulars, it is sure to be one to watch when the ARCA Racing Series pulls into Daytona International Speedway for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 on Saturday, February 12. Paired with a veteran driver and team owner in Andy Belmont along with well-accomplished teammate Chad McCumbee, Ferrier has high expectations for a strong run on Daytona’s infamous high-banks.

“My expectations are very high,” said Ferrier. “I have a very competitive race car with Roush/Yates power. It has had a lot of really good aero work done to it by AJ Johnson. He built a brand new body for us, specifically for Daytona, so my expectations are high. My goal is to come out of Daytona with a top-10 finish.”

Ferrier, a Middletown, N.Y. native, may only have three previous ARCA Racing Series starts (Daytona, Talladega, Pocono), but he has over 25 years of experience behind the wheel of a racecar. The dirt-track driver got his start as a motocross racer in 1985 and hasn’t looked back since. Racing modifieds in the northeast, his connection with team owner Andy Belmont runs much deeper than a driver/owner connection.

“Both Andy and I are from up around this area (N.Y.),” explained Ferrier. “He has a lot of dirt modified experience as well as I do, and we know a lot of the same people from racing up here in the Northeast. Andy did race modifieds up here as well. We never competed against each other, when he was racing up here I was still racing motocross, but that is how I ended up getting his name and getting tied in with him. I know Andy has a top-notch team and organization so I’m really looking forward to getting down to Daytona.”

One would think Daytona’s 2.5-mile oval would be a huge challenge for a driver used to slinging dirt on the short tracks, but Ferrier proved otherwise in his first and only Daytona start in 2009. Ferrier competed in the top-10 for much of the race, and was looking to stage a late climb to the top-five when an oil pump failed with only nine laps to go. Ferrier ultimately finished 17th, but that run only fueled his fire for a top finish this year at one of the most prolific tracks in all of motorsports.

“Daytona is the Superbowl of stock car racing, it always is,” said the N.Y. native. “If you ask any driver if they can start anywhere it would definitely be Daytona, there is no question about it. Speedweeks at Daytona is a huge event worldwide, so for me to take part in that, it really means something.”

When the checkered flag falls on Saturday’s ARCA Racing Series season-opener, Ferrier’s biggest goal is to see an ABR car cross the finish line first.

“My commitment to Andy Belmont Racing is to have an ABR car finish first. If I can help Chad (McCumbee) get there I absolutely will, and I’m sure he feels the same way. Ultimately the goal is to put ABR in the winner’s circle.”

John Ferrier and the No. 14 CGS Imaging Ford Fast Facts:

Ferrier at Daytona: Ferrier made one previous start at Daytona International Speedway in 2009 driving for Randy Baker. After a late change was made to his car after qualifying, Ferrier was forced to start from the 39th position. Ferrier raced his way into the top-10, where he remained until an oil line broke forcing him to retire from the race 11 laps shy of the finish. Ferrier came home with a 17th-place finish in his first ARCA Racing Series start.

Did You Know?: Ferrier will have a strong Stewart / Haas racing connection in Daytona. Crew Chief Mark Gibson is the brother of Tony Gibson who is Ryan Newman’s Crew Chief. Ferrier will also have Tony Stewart’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series spotter Bob Jeffery calling the shots from high above Daytona International Speedway.

This Week’s Ford: John Ferrier will be piloting chassis No. RK271/704 at Daytona International Speedway. This is a former Roush Racing car that was originally driven by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and was used as a backup car for ABR in 2010.

Autographs: Fans will have the chance to meet John Ferrier and all of their favorite ARCA Racing Series drivers on Saturday, February 12 from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. EST during an all-access open garage.

Ferrier on racing with teammate Chad McCumbee:

“Having Chad McCumbee as a teammate at Daytona is really exciting and will definitely be an advantage. I mean Chad is a NASCAR Driver, he had Sprint Cup starts, and that is a positive thing that is going to help me a ton. I have a good idea that when we get down to Daytona Andy (Belmont) will really set us down as a team and have us come up with a strategy, because the way the pavement is down there it’s not going to be a surprise if you get shuffled all the way around the track. There is nobody I would rather work with in the draft than a guy like Chad who has a lot of experience.”

Ferrier on racing on Daytona’s new pavement:

“I tested on the new pavement during the ARCA test in January, and I loved it. It is very similar to Talladega. There’s just a bump between turns three and four, and I honestly wouldn’t even call it a bump. I would call it more of an imperfection in the pavement. I love it. I think it’s great. The old pavement could definitely be a handful when you were running in a pack of cars. This should definitely tighten things up, it will be pretty exciting.”

A simple business call in 1998 to Continental Fire & Safety Owner Greg Gore quickly developed into what is becoming one of the longest standing team sponsorship alignments in the ARCA Racing Series today.

“I first began talking to Greg (Gore) in 1998 when I purchased some fire extinguishers,” said ABR Team Manager Andy Belmont. “I noticed that they were affiliated with a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team and I was very impressed with their business. A simple call to purchase some equipment has turned into a great relationship. I’m very honored to have Continental Fire & Safety back for another season.”

Founded in 1974, Continental Fire & Safety provides safety equipment including fire trucks, pumps, ladders, extinguishers, hoses, apparel, first aid equipment and more. Continental Fire & Safety also provides equipment to fire departments and EMS squads throughout the nation. Their territory stretches from New Jersey through Eastern Pennsylvania.

“To once again team up with Andy Belmont and Andy Belmont Racing for a 13th season is our honor,” said Continental Fire & Safety President Greg Gore. “They have literally treated us like family since day one. Their dedication and enthusiasm is what our company thrives on. We’re wishing the best to Andy (Belmont) and Chad (McCumbee) in 2011. We have a feeling it’s going to be a spectacular year.”

Continental Fire & Safety also has a sister company Fire Apparatus Repair, Inc. headquartered in Hamilton, New Jersey.

Two-time ARCA Racing Series winner Chad McCumbee and Andy Belmont Racing will kick off their 2011 racing season with an open-test at the newly paved Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway from January 11-13, 2011. The team will then be able to fine-tune their Ford Fusion in preparation for the 2011 ARCA Racing Series season-opener, the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway set for Saturday, February 12, 2011.

(October 13, 2010) - At the beginning of the 2010 ARCA Series season driver Tom Hessert set ambitious, but attainable goals. The 24-year-old aspired to lead laps, visit victory lane and contend for the championship. He achieved those feats with flying colors and is now positioned to take the next step in his career.

This year marked Hessert’s third season of ARCA competition. The Cherry Hill, N.J., native has shown a steady progression since entering the series full time in 2008. In his rookie year, Hessert drove to one top-five and seven top-10 finishes behind the wheel of Andy Belmont’s Ford. He closed out the season eighth in the final point standings. In 2009, Hessert claimed one top-five and eight top-10s. He also earned his first ARCA Series pole. His efforts brought him another eighth-place standing in the championship points.

It was a breakout year for Hessert in 2010. Hessert paired with Cunningham Motorsports to drive the No. 77 Cherry Hill Motorsports Dodge. He pedaled his way to 10 top-fives and 15 top-10s. His average finish in the ARCA Series rose from 15.3 to 7.9 and he completed 99.7% of possible laps in the 20-event schedule.

Hessert’s Dodge became a familiar sight at the front of the racing field. He led an impressive 388 laps throughout the season, more than any other competitor in 2010. Of all the laps Hessert led, the most important one was the last lap at Iowa Speedway, bringing him his first ARCA Series win.

“It’s been an awesome season,” Hessert said. “When we began this year, our goals were to lead laps, win a race and contend for the championship. We can check all of those off our list. I’m really proud of what our team accomplished. Everyone on the team gave it 100% and I can’t thank them enough.”

Hessert’s performance initiated a fierce three-way battle for the 2010 ARCA Series championship with Patrick Sheltra and Craig Goess. Their fight went down to the wire, with all three drivers separated by 20 points before the final event at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway. During the event Hessert solidified a third-place finish in the championship standings.

“The talent level is at an all-time high in the ARCA Series,” continued Hessert. “There are so many good drivers and teams. There are several teams that are capable of winning each and every week. That makes what we accomplished pretty special. To finish third in the points, to lead all the laps we did and to win a race in such a competitive series is something for our team to be proud of. This year’s championship wasn’t settled until the last lap at Rockingham. We had a few breaks that didn’t go our way and that’s what kept us from winning the title. Overall, though, it’s been a phenomenal year.”

Hessert’s performance in 2010 already has him looking forward to what’s ahead.

“I don’t have my plans solidified for next season, but I’m ready to race. I’d love to run some NASCAR races, maybe some Truck Series or Nationwide Series events, along with some ARCA races. I want to continue racing with the best and developing as a driver.”

Seven time Allen Crowe 100 winner Frank Kimmel of Clarksville, Indiana looks for his first ARCA series win of 2010 as the Automobile Racing Club of America Menard’s-RE/MAX Stock Car Series comes with a new look to end the Illinois State Fair’s two-day festival of speed with the 48th Allen Crowe 100 on Sunday August 22. Kimmel is the current point leader in search of a tenth title and heads a field of nearly 35 ARCA cars vying for starting positions at one of two dirt track races on the 2010 ARCA schedule.

Nine time ARCA title winner Kimmel has a ten point lead after the New Jersey road race and is still looking for his first win of the year. Fans can expect him to be one of the favorites at Springfield as Kimmel has become the ‘king of dirt’ in the ARCA series as the all-time leading race winner on dirt in the modern era. Kimmel is also king at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, his seven race wins are the most in stock cars and he leads in laps led at Springfield with 604 as well as money won.

Justin Marks, a twenty-nine year old Californian, had one win and nine top ten finshes after the race at New Jersey and dropped to fourth in the points. New Jersey’s Craig Goess has staged a torrid battle with Marks for the point lead and is second in points with one win and ten top ten finishes.. Mikey Kile of Louisiana, Indiana’s Dakoda Armstrong, New York’s Tim George, Michigan’s Rob Brent and Florida’s Joey Coulter are all in the current top ten in points and could find their way to Springfield. Brent drives for the 2006 Allen Crowe winning team of Mike Allgaier based in Springfield while Armstrong is a veteran of USAC midget car competition.

Two in the top ten have to be considered strong contenders for a win on the Springfield Mile. Florida’s Patrick Sheltra held the point lead for part of the season and is a veteran of dirt late model competition with several strong runs at Springfield and DuQuoin. New Jersey’s Tom Hessert has run midgets and USAC Silver Crown cars before moving to the ARCA series: Hessert is now third in the 2010 title chase with Sheltra fifth.

One of the ARCA regulars who is looking forward to the dirt is Canadian Steve Arpin, a veteran of dirt modified racing. Other ARCA regulars expected include Indiana’s Darrell Basham, Florida’s Bryan Silas and Michigan’s Brad Smith. North Carolina’s Chad McCumbee returns driving for Andy Belmont.

Illinois drivers help boost ticket sales and last year was no exception as six dotted the entry list and five making the starting field. Galesburg’s A.J. Fike has done ‘double duty’ the last few years competing in the Saturday Tony Bettenhausen 100 USAC dirt car race and will try to join Al Unser as the only other driver in the history of the Illinois State Fair to sweep the dirt car and stock car races on the same weekend. Fike has two top ten finishes in five starts in the Crowe 100 and a pole in his rookie year of 2004. Springfield’s Kelly Kovski has five starts in the Crowe 100 and two top ten finishes while Mark Littleton of Arenzville has three starts. Southern Illinois dirt late model veteran Rodney Melvin of Benton looks to make his debut at Springfield.

Unfortunately one driver who will not return is defending winner Parker Kligerman. The 19 year old Kligerman led 18 laps last year enroute to becoming the youngest winner in Springfield stock car history and posted a stunning upset. He has moved on to the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Frank Kimmel will try to break the tie for most overall stock car wins at Springfield with the late Dean Roper in Sunday August 22 while others try to join legends like Butch Hartman, Don White, Jack Bowsher and Ramo Stott as Allen Crow~ 100 victors. Practice for the 48th Allen Crowe 100 is slated to begin at 9 a.m. Sunday morning with one lap trials for the pole position at 11. The Allen Crowe 100 gets a flying start at approximately 1 p.m.

Now the 32-year grandson of track patriarchs Drs. Joe and Rose Mattioli is set to take on the ARCA race in a whole different perspective, that of driver.

Igdalsky, an accomplished racer as well as track operator which includes both Pocono and Virginia’s South Boston Speedway, is running the full ARCA slate this year for Team ModSpace with car owner Andy Belmont.

Igdalsky has raced on tracks all across the country, but he never has had the chance to compete on the “Tricky Triangle.” It’s not that he hasn’t thought about it for as long as he can remember.

“This is something that ever since I was a boy I dreamed about: Racing at Pocono, racing the big cars,” Igdalsky said. “This is a week where I’m going to try and take a step back and really take it all in and enjoy it and not just go through it like a whirlwind and then look back and say what happened.

“My dream is turning into a reality this weekend and I’m happy to have ModSpace behind me and their continued support.”

The race was actually brought to a stop with 70 laps completed due to the rain.

With less than 20 circuits remaining in the 150-mile ARCA Racing Series Presented by RE/MAX and Menards race the Long Pond, PA racer was running in ninth position. However when the race was brought to a stop ARCA officials credited the ModSpace team with a 15th place finish, one lap down on winner Justin Marks.

“We were using the race strategy we had planned,” said the 32-year-old racer. “We figured there would be racers having problems and there would be more cautions in the second half of the race. The cautions didn’t really happen but we were working our way through the field, picking them off one at a time. The car on rain tires (the first time in the 58 year history of ARCA that rain tires were used) really performed well.

“Unfortunately the rain got very heavy and I was having a very difficult time seeing where I was going. At times I could not even see the hood of the car. The spotters were doing a great job of telling me where I should be on the track but it was almost impossible to see because of the rain and we ran off the track a couple of times in a couple of the corners in the closing laps.”

Igdalsky had the ModSpace Ford, owned by Andy Belmont Racing, in 15th starting spot after qualifying with an 81.345 second, 89.530 mph trip around the 2.034-mile road circuit.

“It would have been great to have a better finish in a race with our sponsor being the presenting sponsor of the event,” said Belmont. “We really felt we had a strong car and we were happy with the performance of our driver. We felt that we had at least a top ten effort in the bag in the final laps but the heavy rain proved to create an almost impossible situation forcing us to settle for 15th.”

Next up, after a lengthy break in the schedule for Igdalsky and the ModSpace Ford, is the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA 200 on the tight confines of Salem, Indiana Speedway.

“I have heard it (Salem) is a very interesting track,” said Igdalsky. “It is a high banked track and I have had no experience on a banked short track. I don’t see it as a problem overall. We will just start quick and give it all we got.”

The race takes place on Sunday, April 11th with the green flag falling at 2:15 pm. Practice and qualifying set for Friday, April 10 on the .555 mile banked asphalt oval.

“I feel good about heading to a road course,” said Igdalsky. “They have changed the configuration since I was last there, shortened the overall track and lengthened the backstretch, so it will make for a very interesting race. One small mistake and you will be off the track and in trouble.”

The 32-year-old racer, an executive with NASCAR sanctioned Pocono Raceway, has extensive experience in road course competition and is looking forward to the race. In 20 career Bertil Roos F2000 Pro Series starts, Nick earned nine wins and 14 top three finishes. Nick is ranked seventh in all time series wins in only two full seasons of competition.

The recent test session at the track did not go as good as was expected in the morning but with the changes made in the afternoon the team is feeling good about the race, a first time event for the ARCA Racing Series Presented by RE/MAX and Menard’s. This will be just the 12th time in their long and storied history that the ARCA Series has run on a road course.

Igdalsky, in his rookie season with ARCA, will be driving the ModSpace sponsored Andy Belmont Racing No. 1 Ford.
“Having our sponsor also being the presenting sponsor of the race makes us want to do well even more than we usually do,” said Belmont. “It would be a great day if Nick and the crew were able to put the ModSpace Ford in victory lane in their race.

“ModSpace will have a large number of guests on hand for the race and we want to be able to impress them.”
All prize money earned by the team goes to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Qualifying for the Tire Kingdom 150 Presented by ModSpace takes place at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 26 while the race is set for the green flag at

I guess there are lots of ways to look at this, but we got out of there with a couple of whole race cars and that is an accomplishment in itself. Nothing broke, nothing fell off, for the most part, we just had the racing Gods to deal with and a week of teaching our rookie drivers what we can about plate racing. Some stuff you can’t teach, you have to just learn it as you go.

ARCA management went through great pains to have meetings, show videos of what not to do in driver meetings and so on. Not sure what happens at Daytona. It is like we are racing on Friday the thirteenth with a full moon. The things that go on defy logic. I call it a stomach problem. It’s when the drivers feet that work the pedals become disconnected from the brain. Somewhere around the stomach. There is a definite disconnect. Why else would someone drive slam into a pile of wrecked cars?

Lots of torn up race cars, lots of torn up race cars for no good reason. Some of it is just going to happen, but driving into the pile or washing up and pinching folks into the fence or whatever is just plain nonsense. Some of this is just a product of where we are today in racing. We are putting kids out there younger and younger with less and less experience, all trying to be Dale Earnhardt. You know the deal. Everybody wants to be a big team “development driver”. Make no mistake, most of the time, getting to be a development driver comes with a million dollar price tag. Very few kids make it simply on the merit of their talent in this day and age. It cost lots of money to do what we do, even in the ARCA series.

“We will be happy to develop your child Mr. Big Daddy Customer, just sign this little agreement for 1.2 million”.

Think about it. Kids start out in go karts or quarter midgets or whatever at age 5 or 8. They run legends or micros or whatever and do well. Right away they jump to the big cars when they are 16. Just because one guy or another did it and succeeded, the reality is that not everyone is going to make it, it is about one percent. Period. Not every kid is going to be the next Jeff Gordon.

Anyway, we have lots of folks with no experience in racing. In fairness, they have to get it somewhere and that is what the ARCA series is, a development series. Develop the driver to graduate to one of the top 3 NASCAR levels. ARCA gets slammed in the media for the wrecks, but it is a product that people pay to see. Do you really think “most” fans want to see the Daytona 500 go green to checker with no caution? I mean I do, but most are there waiting for “the big one” and you know it.

So lots of cars got torn up. We planned to gas and go on the first stop and go the whole way, same as the winner did. On the first stop we overshot the pit. Rolled the car back and gassed it. Unplugged the gas can. Driver took his foot off of the brake. Gas man plugged in again to pack it full of fuel and literally pushed the car over the line by less than six inches. You see gas and go lots of times with a gas man running with the car. We learned that it isn’t acceptable here I suppose.

We had a couple of judgment calls not go our way. Lost a couple laps. Got them both back with the Lucky Dog. My whole Daytona goal is always to take care of the car until 15 to go, then get on with the race. Somehow, some way, we did just that. Lead lap, lead draft with 10 to go. Had a strong horse with the 1 car. Came from the back of the longest line via the lucky dog rule, drove to the top ten. Had a run on the high side and frankly, I believe we would have run fifth or better. This car IS that good.

Coming off of four on the outside, another car must have lost steering, pushed up, got the wind taken off or just plain ran out of talent and run into the left side of the car. Got a flat and ended up on pit road on the last lap. “Just one of those racing deals” I hate that saying, don’t you?

We tested, we prepared, great power, had decent pit stops (not great), fairly good. At the end of the day, there are just some cars you just simply cant race around. Heck you see it at Bowman Gray or Hickory, or anywhere else. I am even told that some guys “couldn’t race with me” can you imagine?

Rookie Nick Igdalsky drew the first spot when it came to the order of qualifying for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 at Daytona International Speedway on Friday morning.

Being first to make a qualifying attempt usually means that you are the “test car” to see what the track conditions are. Nick turned two very strong laps with the Andy Belmont ModSpace Ford No.1. His quickest lap, the one that counted, was 50.096 seconds on the two and one-half mile super speedway giving him an average speed of 179.655 mph.

The speed was off from the practice speeds he had turned the day before when he was running laps at 181 mph. He earned 16th starting spot in the 43 car field. Qualifying attempts were scheduled for 51 cars.

“The wind had picked up since yesterday but I still felt we had a good couple of laps,” said Igdalsky. “The car was a little tight in the corners.” He was a little disappointed by the qualifying effort but still upbeat about his chances in the 80-lap race. This being his first opportunity to race on the world famous speedway.

Car owner Andy Belmont, a veteran of Daytona battles, said, “I am a little confused. I thought we had a top ten car. The air was thick (rain expected during the day) and the wind was strong. I still think we are alright for the race. Nick did a good job with the ModSpace Ford.”

Igdalsky goes to the starting line with a 16th place starting spot in the 43 car starting field for the Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 on Saturday (February 6) at 4:30 p.m. The race can be seen live on SPEED. He wants to have an impressive showing not only for his own personal satisfaction but also for his ModSpace sponsor and for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The charity receives all the prize money earned by the ModSpace team during the 2010 season.

The race is the first of the season for the ARCA Racing Series Presented by RE/MAX and Menards.
