September 25, 2010

No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra News and Notes

This Week’s Tundra… The No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs team will race chassis RMM-108 this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Skinner drove this particular chassis at Darlington Raceway where he raced inside the top-10 for most of the night. During the closing laps, Skinner was caught up in a multi-car crash where the No. 5 Toyota Tundra suffered race-ending damage.

Lucky Las Vegas… Mike Skinner has experienced more success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway than any other driver in the NCWTS field. The driver of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra is the only driver to record multiple victories at the 1.5-mile oval. Additionally, Skinner leads the field with three pole awards throughout his eight starts at the Nevada track.

Barrett-Jackson… Before going on track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Mike Skinner will attend the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction on Friday. The 1995 NCWTS Champion is also a car enthusiast with a collection of his own hot rods that will be featured in a special segment transitioning from the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday afternoon.

Meet Mike… Fans are invited to attend a public autograph session to be held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino on Friday, September 24th from 7:15-8:00 p.m. The driver of the No. 5 International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs for the crowd.

Toyota Loyalty… Skinner is the only driver to have piloted a Toyota Tundra in every NCWTS Series race. The two teamed up in 2004 when the manufacturer entered the NASCAR arena.

Most Popular Driver… Voting is open to name Mike Skinner as the NCWTS’ Most Popular Driver. Cast your vote by Nov. 12, 2010: http://www.nascar.com/news/features/2010.truck.mpd/index.html

Watch and Listen… The Smith’s Food & Drug Stores 350 will be broadcast live on SPEED, MRN Radio and Sirius XM Channel 128 beginning at 9:00 PM EST on Saturday, September 25. Two practice sessions and qualifying will take place on Saturday but will not be televised.

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of my favorite tracks. I’ve had a lot of success there over the years and we hope to continue that trend this weekend. The guys on the International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra team have put in a lot of long hours to prepare our truck for this race and I think we’ll have a great weekend. We also have a new teammate at the track with Tayler Malsam in the No. 25 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra; he’s a talented driver and I think it will be cool to work with him again.”

Crew Chief Stacy Johnson on competing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of those races that we circle the date on our calendar. Our International Truck/Monaco RVs team had a great race at the last mile-and-a-half track—Kentucky Speedway—so we’re looking forward the race this weekend too. We’ve done a lot of work on our mile-and-a-half program and we feel that our trucks are getting better week after week. Given Skinner’s past success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, we hope to have a really great race on Saturday night.”

The 19-year-old finished fourth in the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship Point Standings, and was runner-up in Rookie of the Year contention.

In practice Saturday, Coulter rounded the high banked one-mile oval in a time of 26.088 for a speed of 137.994 miles per hour. That time put the Miami Springs, Florida native 24th on the speed charts. As Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell rolled off shortly after 2:30 p.m., Coulter was able to improve that time to 25.273 for a speed of 142.445 miles per hour. This put him 15th on the starting grid for Sunday’s ARCA RE/MAX American 200.

For the 200-lap event, Coulter was able to advance his starting spot by two positions because of an engine change for the No. 6 of Justin Lofton and unapproved changes to the No. 51 of Casey Roderick. The two fellow competitors had to drop to the rear of the field, which moved Coulter into the 13th position when the green flag waved starting the season finale at “The Rock”.

For much of the event, Coulter maintained his top-15 position as the field remained under green flag racing conditions until lap 71. Coulter radioed to crew chief Harold Holly under caution informing him of a loose racecar, therefore Holly opted to bring the No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation-Tempest Cycles Chevrolet down pit road on lap 74. Holly decided on four fresh tires, fuel, and a wedge adjustment to help with Coulter’s loose-handling racecar.

As the field returned to green flag action, Coulter carefully maneuvered his way up to the 11th position before the caution flag would wave once again on lap 116. As leaders came to pit road for scheduled stops on lap 119, Coulter brought his No. 16 machine back down as well for fuel and a set of four fresh tires.

The field would see the caution flag three more times before the final restart came on lap 159, setting the field up for a 41 lap run to the finish. Coulter found himself in 12th position on the final restart, but quickly advanced his position to ninth. As the laps dwindled down, Coulter battled with the No. 32 of Brett Moffit and No. 44 of Frank Kimmel. Coulter was able to clear both competitors just inside of 10 laps remaining in the 200-lap event, taking the checkered flag in ninth position.

“We kind of fought with the car during practice, but were able to really get the car dialed in after our first pit stop,” stated Coulter on the handling issue he was able to overcome early on. “Track position meant everything, and with some late cautions and lap cars, we weren’t able to get our No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation-Tempest Cycles Chevrolet to the front where it needed to be. In the final race of the season, I’m pleased to bring home another top-10 finish for the team,” added Coulter on his run.

Looking back on his 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie season, Coulter is thrilled to have the finishes he’s had, as well as earning a top-five Championship Point Standings position. “I think we under estimated ourselves at the beginning of the year. We were able to achieve more in this year than I had ever expected. I have to give big thanks to Harold Holly (Crew chief), Richie Harris (Car chief), and Michael Chapman (Team engineer) for really helping me through my rookie learning curve. Together we conquered many obstacles and I can’t wait until next season,” stated eager Coulter.

In Coulter’s 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie season, he has earned two Menards Pole Awards (Iowa and Toledo), seven top-five finishes (Four in the top-three), and 13 top-10 finishes. He also led a total of 156 laps in three of the 21 race events. Coulter finished fourth in the Championship Point Standings and runner-up in Rookie of the Year contention.

The next event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series will be the Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Kentucky Saturday night, December 5th.

Coming off a well respected seventh place finish at Kentucky, where the 19-year-old had to resort to a back-up car after making contact with the turn two wall in qualifying Coulter stated, “I like the intermediate tracks a lot, but not as much as the short tracks. Our team has an excellent short track program going on right now and I want to be able to take advantage of it this Saturday night when we go to Berlin.”

Coulter continued, “I’ve heard that it’s an interesting place to race, I’ve looked it up and the fact that it doesn’t have a backstretch wall is a little awkward. However, our goal is just like any other weekend, go out and perform our best and be in contention to bring home that trophy when the checkered flag waves.”

Coulter’s most recent short track appearance came at Mansfield Motorsports Park, were he brought home a career-best second in the Tim Richmond Memorial 200.

To date, Coulter has competed in all eleven ARCA RE/MAX Series events and is currently fourth in the championship point standings. The Miami Springs, Florida native has one Menards Pole Award (Iowa), four consecutive top-five finishes, along with seven top-ten finishes in 2009.

The one-day show at Berlin Raceway gets underway Saturday, July 25 with practice scheduled from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. EST, followed by Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell at 5:00 p.m. The start of the Wolverine Power Systems 200 presented by Generac is scheduled to go off at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.

An outstanding performance is exactly what he delivered as he earned his career first Menards Pole Award Presented by Ansell, and captured his second consecutive podium finish in Saturday’s tenth ARCA RE/MAX race this season, finishing third.

Bringing back the same No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation-Tempest Cycles Chevrolet the team practiced with during the series’ open test, Coulter and his Coulter Motorsports team, led by veteran NASCAR crew chief Harold Holly, had high hopes for the Prairie Meadows 200.

Coulter, who was second quickest during the hour and a half practice session Friday afternoon, was 15th in line out of 37 cars that were there to qualify Saturday. Following his qualifying lap, he waited patiently with his team while the remaining ARCA RE/MAX Series competitors took their turns around the Rusty Wallace-designed short track. Coulter earned his career first Menards Pole Award Presented by Ansell on Saturday evening, circling the .875-mile short track in 23.45 seconds for a speed of 134.328 mph. The pole came just one week after Coulter posted his career best ARCA RE/MAX Series race finish of second at Mansfield Motorsports.

“I was pretty nervous throughout that entire qualifying session,” said Coulter. “Brian Ickler was fast in practice and he was the last car to go out. I knew that if anyone was going to beat our time it was going to be either him or Justin Lofton. I’m happy I got my first pole here because this is a great racetrack. This is my third time here, but my first time racing at this track with the ARCA RE/MAX Series,” Coulter added.

At the start of the 200 lap event, Coulter outran the No. 77 of Parker Kligerman to lead the first 35 laps before scheduled pit stops. As the field went back to green flag racing on lap 38, Coulter found himself in the seventh position. Nonetheless, the 19-year-old wasted no time as he broke back into the top-five the very next lap.

Three additional cautions would take place before crew chief Harold Holly would have to make a beneficial decision to pit once more while under caution on lap 84 for fuel. Coulter returned to racing action on lap 87 in 11th position.

Coulter broke back into top-five racing action by passing the No. 31 of Austin Dillon on lap 116. Final pit stops came on lap 136 under caution; Coulter entered the pits in third and the hard-working crew members were able to put the No. 16 Chevrolet back on top of the leader board, beating the No. 32 of Matt Merrell and No. 77 of Kligerman off pit road.

On the restart, Coulter was able to pull away from Kligerman before his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation-Tempest Cycles Chevrolet started getting tight from the center off. Kligerman then passed Coulter the following lap, with 50 laps remaining.

As Coulter fought with the handling of his No. 16 Chevy Monte Carlo, the No. 31 of Dillon slipped by on lap 172. The caution flag would wave one final time on lap 187, Coulter had an excellent restart, but couldn’t quite get to Dillon or Kligerman in the closing laps. He took the checkered flag in third position.

“On the last pit stop we used our last set of tires and the car just tightened up a little bit,” said Coulter. “We tested here and we were fastest at the test. We were really fast in practice and we qualified on the pole, so needless to say this is one of my favorite racetracks that I’ve run on so far this year.”

Coulter led a total of 47 laps in the Prairie Meadows 200. His third place finish added to his top-five finishing streak, adding up to four consecutive top-fives and six top-ten finishes in ten ARCA RE/MAX Series events.

The next event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series will be the Click It or Ticket Buckle-Up Kentucky 150 Saturday night, July 18 in conjunction with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

The 19-year-old has previously competed at the .875-mile D-shaped oval, most recently in 2008, recording a fourth place finish.

Coulter, who was fastest in the recent Iowa Speedway test, is on a roll lately coming off three consecutive top-five finishes at Pocono Raceway, Michigan and Mansfield Motorsports Park, where he finished a career-best second.

The 19-year-old driver circled the .875-mile short track in 23.138 seconds, an average speed of 136.140 mph.

“It’s the same situation as Mansfield. This will be my third time here at Iowa, so I could spend more time on how the car works on the track rather than having to spend all my time learning the track, or both,” Coulter said.

“I’m really looking forward to going back to Iowa. I’m returning to familiar tracks, and my past experience at the track should definitely pay off,” Coulter added.

“Iowa Speedway is a fun racetrack to compete on. The layout is awesome and, with the level of competition in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, it will definitely make for a great race for sure,” Coulter stated on returning to the .875-mile D-shaped oval.

The first on-track activity for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is a practice session on Friday, July 10 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. Following the hour and a half practice session is an autograph session at Prairie Meadows Racetrack/Casino from 7-8 p.m. on Friday, July 10 in support of the Prairie Meadows 200 at Iowa Speedway. Prairie Meadows Racetrack/Casino is located in Altoona, Iowa, right off of I-80 at exit 142.

The Prairie Meadows 200 at Iowa Speedway is scheduled to go off Saturday, July 11 at 8:00 p.m. local time. Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell precedes the race at 4:00 PM. The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will join the ARCA RE/MAX Series for an ARCA double-header with the IMTA 50 scheduled to go at 6:00 p.m.

All on-track activity for the ARCA RE/MAX Series and the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will feature live streaming audio and video on the ARCA Racing Network at ARCAracing.com.
