ALEX KENNEDY ON PHOENIX INT’L RACEWAY

“I’m looking forward to this weekend’s race at Phoenix. It’s not too far of a drive from New Mexico, so I have a lot of friends and family that will be at the race. I’ve never been on the track before, so I’ll use the first practice to get comfortable with the feel of the car and how the track drives. Everyone I have talked to says that it is a very difficult track, so I plan to talk to some of the drivers I know in the garage to see if they have any pointers they can give a rookie. I’m looking forward to putting last week behind me and bringing home a solid finish for Baker Curb Racing in Phoenix!”

CREW CHIEF JOHN REESE ON PHOENIX INT’L RACEWAY

“Phoenix is a track that our team has been very successful at in the past. We finished fifth in the spring race with Greg Biffle in the No. 27 and Scott Lagasse Jr. finished eighth in the No. 43. It is a very unique track, turns 1 and 2 are very tight, turns 3 and 4 are sweeping and the backstretch has a dogleg. You have to run as loose as you possibly can in Turns 1 and 2 to be good in Turns 3 and 4. We look forward to rebounding from a tough weekend at Texas with a good run at Phoenix!”

ALEX KENNEDY ON TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

“I’m looking forward to making another start in the Nationwide Series and getting behind the wheel of Baker Curb Racing’s No. 27 at Texas. Three of my four starts in the Nationwide Series this season came on road courses. I think that starting out mainly on the road courses has really helped me learn a lot about these cars. I’ve learned what the cars do under acceleration, light braking, and heavy braking, and about the weight transfer in the corners. The only oval I’ve been on in the Nationwide Series was Gateway; Texas will definitely be a lot different.

I’ll use the practice session on Friday to get comfortable with the car on a bigger oval and see what I can get out of the car. I ran the ARCA race at Texas this year and I think that experience will really help me this weekend. I know that Greg Biffle was fast in the spring race at Texas, so the team will have some good notes to work with. My goal is to keep my nose clean early in the race and put the No. 27 National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund Ford Fusion in a position at end the day to come away with a solid finish!”

CREW CHIEF JOHN REESE ON TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

“We’re looking forward to Alex’s first race in the No. 27. He’s shown some promise in his first four races this season and we look forward to a solid finish this weekend. We came from the back to finish seventh with Greg Biffle at Texas in the spring. We’ll unload with a similar setup for Alex in practice on Friday and make adjustments as needed to fit his style. I’m really proud of how far our mile-and-a-half program has come this year. We worked really hard in the off-season and spent a lot of time in the wind tunnel trying to find a good balance between drag and downforce. Our body hanger, Will Jones at Speedway Fabrication, has also really been a very integral part of our improvements this season.”

All the talk these days is about how amazing it is that half-century-old Mark Martin is winning races. To which I say, pshaw! There’s a driver out there who was winning races years before Martin was even born, and he’s getting back on the track. Hide the women and children, Hershel McGriff is back!

McGriff, a NASCAR on-and-offer for most of his life, won 4 races in 85 Sprint Cup-level starts, and ran all over the country in every series you could imagine, and some you probably don’t even want to know about. He raced in 27 seasons over more than 40 years, occasionally pausing his career for family or other reasons. When he stepped away from NASCAR He now manages a copper mine near Tucson, Arizona, but since sitting behind a desk doesn’t give you the same juice as sitting behind a wheel, he’s still got a competitive urge flowing.
