With the track being her first race at a short oval, she was ready to put aside the memories of a fiery Texas race and begin her new experience in Iowa.

Simona immediately rocketed forward at the start of the race. It wasn’t long before she completed her first pit stop after the first yellow flag for the on-track incident involving Mario Moraes and Justin Wilson.

She reentered the track back in the 21st spot. Simona continued to move up and by lap # 44 she was solidly in the 19th spot. After the 2ndyellow, Simona stayed out and as a result moved up to the 16th spot and regained the lead lap. She pitted on lap # 96. An incident ensued involving her hitting the pit wall and a crew member, which after lengthy recovery forced a green flag drive thru penalty during the restart.

Simona De Silvestro

Another stop was required to replace the nose, but an undeterred De Silvestro would reenter the race in the 20th spot, 2 laps down. Unfortunately, the problems for the No. 78 Stargate Resistance car continued to mount following the repairs, as she was experiencing on-track handling problems, so the decision was made to bring Simona in and be safe. She would officially finish the race in 21st after completing 128 laps.

The team will take a 2 week break before returning to competition at the Camping World Grand Prix at Watkins Glen for a return to road course racing on July 4th.

Simona De Silvestro, Driver No. 78 – “We were really struggling for the last 20 laps. It was really hard to drive over the bump in Turn 2. I don’t know what happened. We were OK at the beginning of the race but we had an unfortunate mishap in the pits, but what’s important is that Brett is okay. I’m sure we can learn a lot from this weekend.”

Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal – “A disappointing day. We were running reasonably and were trying to take advantage of the yellows and fuel mileage. Unfortunately after the contact with the wall in pit lane we obviously hurt the car and it was unsafe to continue. Thankfully Brett, the crew member is bruised but OK. Ironically, as a local boy he had a film crew follow him this weekend, so it added some drama he would probably have liked to avoid!.”

Imran Safiulla, Team Stargate Worlds Principal – “It’s disappointing to have a result like this but again Simona is a rookie and every race is a new experience and we are collectively learning. I am glad to see that Brett is doing well after the pit stop. We’ll take this race and learn from it and hopefully going back to road course racing at Watkins Glen will bring some positive results. Many thanks to the crew for their hard work leading up to this race.”

After starting in the 21st position, a bit of strategy and good fortune put Carpenter and the No. 20 Menards/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone machine in the tenth position following his first pit stop and subsequent full course caution.

While running in the top-ten on lap 23 for the restart, competitor Mario Moraes completed an ill-advised move approaching turn five and made significant contact with the No.20 Menards car. The incident forced Carpenter to take the road course short cut on his way back to the pits and caused damage to the car.

Carpenter was obligated to make two stops due to the incident as he took on new Firestone Firehawk tires, a refill of Ethanol, and a repair of the right-rear tow link. The Menards/Vision Racing crew made a speedy repair of the car, but Carpenter was still forced to go a lap down as a penalty for taking the short cut.

Dropping back to the 19th position, Carpenter put forth his best effort to salvage a decent finish. In doing so, he was able to move up three spots and take the checkered flag in the 16th position. Unfortunately, it was not the sort of result that Carpenter desired as he dropped one spot in the IndyCar Series championship point standings to the 14th position with 157 total points (156 points behind the leader).

Justin Wilson of Dale Coyne Racing won the event, which marks the first race this season in the IndyCar Series that a car other than that of Team Penske and Target Chip Ganassi Racing has won. It was also Dale Coyne Racing’s first-ever victory as an organization. Rounding out the podium were Ryan Briscoe of Penske and Scott Dixon of Ganassi. Dixon also took control of the championship points lead with 313 total points.

Watch the IndyCar Series in action next weekend for the Series’ debut at Toronto, Ontario, Canada, for the Honda Indy Toronto. The race broadcast will air live from the streets of Toronto on Sunday, July 12th at 1 p.m. (ET) on ABC.

Post Race Quotes: (July 5, 2009)

Ed Carpenter - No. 20 Menards/Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone

Finishing Position: 16th

Qualifying Position: 21st

On race:

“It ended up being a disappointing race. We looked like we were falling into a decent strategy when we pitted and caught the yellow to find ourselves mid-pack after doing our pit stop. We took the restart in 10th spot but it isn’t a real race unless Mario Moraes does something stupid. He’s very fast and very talented but until he gets a little smarter he’s never going to run up front in a race. It’s a shame because the KV Racing team is a good team that puts together fast cars but all he does is run over people every race. That’s what ended our day.”

About Vision Racing: V

Vision Racing is owned and operated by Tony and Laura George as well as actor Patrick Dempsey of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and is based in Indianapolis, Indiana in a 32,000 square foot facility. The team competes full-time in the IndyCar Series and is entering its fifth season of IndyCar Series competition. The team features returning IndyCar Series driver Ed Carpenter and welcomed veteran Ryan Hunter-Reay for the start of 2009. Also new for 2009 is a return to the Firestone Indy Lights Series with driver James Davison, as well as a technical partnership with new FIL team Bryan Herta Autosport and driver Daniel Herrington. Vision Racing continues to proudly perpetuate the legacy of the Hulman-George family through motorsports excellence, by demonstrating the traditions and heritage of the Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar Racing.

Carpenter started from the 14th position and ran as high as eighth in the race, but was caught out twice by yellow flags immediately after making his second and third pit stops. Those cautions caused by on-track accidents impeded any progress and advancement Carpenter could have made via pit stop cycles and fuel saving strategies.

The 13th place finish this evening dropped Carpenter one point in the IndyCar Series championship point standings to the 13th position with 143 points (136 points behind the leaders).

This stretch of six consecutive oval races that saw Carpenter score four top-ten finishes has concluded with Richmond and now the IndyCar Series will transition to the first of three consecutive road and street course events starting with next weekend’s affair at Watkins Glen International. Carpenter’s best finish at Watkins Glen came in 2006 when he finished sixth. It is also the team’s best finish at the 3.37-mile road course.

On race:

“It was a frustrating race. You could run a decent pace on your own but this was like no Richmond race I have ever run before. The No. 20 Menards car was really affected by dirty air and loss of grip in traffic. We didn’t have much luck with cautions coming out of the pits either. Finishing in 13th place is nothing to be happy with, but we made it through in one piece when others didn’t.”
