ON WORKING IN CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE U.S. ARMY, PARTICULARLY ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, IS THAT A SPECIAL DEAL FOR YOU?“It is. We’ve been fortunate here before to win the pole and we ran second here a couple of years ago with the U.S. Army on the car so another opportunity here Memorial Day weekend and it’s always an honor to represent the soldiers. Obviously there are a lot of fun festivities that are going on pre-race, that are military-related. A lot of soldiers are going to be here from Ft. Bragg and we’ll do our best to represent them each and every week and especially this weekend.”

DOES THE NATURE OF THIS RACE, THE LENGTH AND DAY TO NIGHT, MAKE IT MORE OR LESS LIKELY FOR A TEAM TO BREAK AWAY FROM EVERYBODY ELSE? “I think a big part of that depends on the caution flags when you get bunched back up, because you can have a bad run on your second fuel run and be one of the slowest cars on the track if you pulled the lead out and still stay out front. So a good part of it is the restarts because the restarts are so chaotic it seems. But yeah, a team can dominate with or without the temperature change and the track change and everything else. The guy who leads the most laps might only lead 50 of them, you just never know.”

Audio: 2011 NSCS Coca-Cola 600 Pre-Race Press Conference with Driver Ryan Newman

HOW MUCH HAVE THESE CARS CHANGED SINCE THEY WERE INTRODUCED IN 2007? HOW MUCH DIFFERENT IS WHAT YOU’RE RUNNING NOW THAN WHAT YOU RAN SIX MONTHS AGO? “They’ve changed a lot when it comes to the handling of it. We’ve don’t a lot to make them handle a lot better. Kyle Busch’s first comments were pretty spot-on, even though nobody really wanted to hear it, in saying that they’ve gotten safer; and we as teams, the biggest changes we’ve made is just working to reduce the weight in the cars and putting the weight in the right spot. That’s been a big help with reference to the tires themselves and getting to use the left-side tires a little harder instead of the right-side and having the problems we had like at Indy a few years ago. So, just working with them and getting that notebook is a big part of making them consistent and being able to unload and not have guys…. Two or three years ago or whatever it was, you’d go out there for first practice and you’d see splitter marks all over the race track from guys just clobbering the splitter. And now guys have a lot better understanding of where we need to be and what the speed’s got to be like in the race track and how we work with these race cars. I think a part of the help as well has been going back to the spoiler because obviously there’s years and years of history with the spoiler and the notes that go along with it.”

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE WORK YOUR FOUNDATION IS DOING TO HELP THE ANIMALS AFFECTED BY ALL THE TORNADOS IN THE MIDWEST? “Our work effort started in the Tuscaloosa area of Alabama and we’ve got a great partnership with our foundation with the IAMS Pet Food Corporation. They’ve actually donated a truckload of pet food and we had a truckload of pet food that went down there as well. So we packed up a semi-truck; I did it myself with by big old tractor and packed up a semi-truck full of pallets and shipped it off down there. So, just doing what we can to make a difference. Fortunately from what I’ve been told they’re in a good situation where they’ve had a lot of donation, it’s just a matter of getting it distributed down there. So I think a lot of the things that have been sent go to warehouses so that it can be distributed timely so there’s not an influx with a bunch of dog food that people can’t use right away.

“Our foundation is all about animal welfare. We do a lot to help control the over-population and the understanding that goes along with that, but at the same time whatever we can do to help the animals. When people can’t help themselves, they’re surely not going to help the animals that they love as well. So we have to do to what we can. And we’re blessed with the opportunity to do what we can and make a difference for those people and those animals.”

WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING APPEARANCES AT MILITARY BASES, DO YOU CONTINUE TO HEAR FROM SOLDIERS? IF SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? “I don’t have direct contact with soldiers on a day-to-day basis, or even a week-to-week basis. I talked to Colonel Crotts, one of our heads, he’s the motorsports guys; I talk to him randomly via text. But we stay pretty busy doing the things that we do at the race shops on Mondays and the meetings and whatnot. And it’s nice to have a couple of days to yourself before you get to head back to the race track again. But there is a lot of communication and obviously this weekend more so than others with soldiers at the race track and doing meet-and-greets. I’d say I do more than most when it comes to visiting places like Walter Reed and the things that we do with the wounded soldiers and trying to make a difference and an impact there because of what I wear across my chest.”

DO YOU THINK THERE SHOULD BE A NASCAR SANCTION AGAINST A DRIVER WHO WAS CHARGED, AS KYLE BUSCH WAS CHARGED WITH SPEEDING THIS WEEK? “If you don’t have to have a driver’s license to compete in the series, then what happens on the street has no affect as to what happens on the race track in my opinion. That’s what you hold a driver’s license for. If he’s charged criminally, then that’s a different situation, right? Versus being charged with a driver-related issue. Maybe that makes sense, I don’t know.”

DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR FOUNDATION IS MAKING EFFORTS TO ASSIST IN JOPLIN, MISSOURI? “I don’t know if we’ve done anything or if we are going to do anything. I kinda know what happened in Joplin and I know it was similar to what happened in Alabama, but I’m not 100% sure. Like I said, we’ve partnered up with Iams and Iams has been a big part of what we do with our foundation to make that difference. They are the outlet for our donations with the pet food and everything else. I’m not saying anything hasn’t been done, but it did take us a couple of weeks in Alabama to react to that situation.”

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT COMING TO KANSAS TWICE AND WHAT THAT MEANS FOR YOUR TEAM? “For me, I’m like anybody else, I guess I could say in that we don’t know exactly how it is going to be. For me, I think about the race track and if the race track it is going to be super slick because it is a hot, sunny day and it is way hotter than it was in the fall.

Those types of things. That is what I think about. To me, in the end, it is just another race, but I want to go there knowing what I need to do to my race car to make it fast, to make it capable of winning.”

WITH YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE AT KANSAS, WOULD YOU EXPECT WHAT TRANSPIRES HERE KIND OF SHOW THEMSELVES AGAIN AT KANSAS NEXT WEEK? AS FAR AS THE CAR AND THE RACE TRACK, IS IT THAT SIMILAR? “No, it is totally different. It is a totally different type of race track. Much less vertical load there. Track position is even more important there. The seams with the asphalt are sensitive there. There are different things that for sure standout at Kansas City than here at Charlotte. It used to be a place like Kansas was kind of similar to Las Vegas or Chicago. Between our tire situation that we have now in reference to how many different tires we run throughout the year, there is much less similarities between tracks because of the tire differences.”

BACK TO THE KYLE SITUATION. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT IN REGARDS TO CRIMINAL AS OPPOSED TO A LICENSE, AN ACTION IS AN ACTION? SECONDLY THERE IS A LOT OF RUSH ON THE PUBLIC’S BEHALF FOR SOME KIND OF JUDGEMENT, SOME KIND OF ACTION UPON THIS, DOES IT NEED TO GO THROUGH THE COURTS AND WAIT OR DOES SOMETHING NEED TO BE HAPPENING UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU COULD BE IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT, NOT SAYING YOU WOULD, BUT FATE, BUT IF SOMETHING HAPPENED, IT WOULD BE COMING DOWN ON YOU? “My point about the license part of it is if you don’t have to have a driver’s license to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, then, no matter what, it’s DMV (Department of Motor Vehicle) related in my opinion. If he would have clobbered a mail box at 128, then that is a Federal situation. There are different ways of looking at it is my point. If something was to happen to it…it is just a private car incident that has no affect on his eligibility to drive a Sprint Cup car or a Nationwide car. But, to me, it is a very gray area in reference to the police officer and what he did as to how he got away as clean as he did. I think that is probably your judgment question. If it was you running 128 in a 45, would he have treated you the same way? Every officer has to answer that question a different way depending on who he is dealing with.”

THERE’S A LOT OF RUSH TO JUDGMENT, THE TEAM SHOULD DO THIS OR NASCAR SHOULD DO THAT, AS A DRIVER SOMEBODY WHO COULD POTENTIALLY BE IN A SITUATION LIKE THAT IS IT OKAY THAT JUDGMENT BE DIRECTED THAT THE TEAM DO SOMETHING OR DOES IT NEED TO WAIT THROUGHT THE COURT PROCESSES? “In respect to how the team treats him?”

YOU’VE EXPLAINED WHY YOU DON’T THINK NASCAR SHOULD DO ANYTHING. “I don’t think NASCAR can do anything because they don’t require a driver’s license.”

THOSE IN THE PUBLIC ARE SAYING 128 IN A 45 ZONE, SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE. “That’s just what they clocked him at, he could have been going faster. (laughter).”

THE NEXT THING PEOPLE WILL LOOK AT WILL BE THE TEAM OR SPONSORS, SHOULD THEY ACT BEFORE IT GOES THROUGH THE COURT PROCESS OR SHOULD HE BE ALLOWED TO GO THROUGH THE COURT PROCESS AND WHAT’S DETERMINED THERE BEFORE ANY KIND OF DISCIPLINE TAKES PLACE? “It’s just as you said. It’s a judgment situation where I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. In multiple people’s eyes, is Joe Gibbs going to react to it in the same way that M&M’s or Interstate or anybody else does, I don’t know. That’s not for me to judge. I believe that he made a big mistake, he openly admitted that he made a big mistake from what I read although it sounded like somebody else wrote it and not him. We’re supposed to be professional race car drivers and by being professional race car drivers we don’t make stupid mistakes like that on the road. That’s the way I look at it.”

Today, the IZOD IndyCar Series made the announcement that there will be manufacturer competition in 2012 with Chevrolet’s return to the sport. This news is not only positive and exciting for IndyCar, but for DRR and their partners.

As Dreyer & Reinbold Racing embarks on their 12th year in racing, the announcement of manufacturer competition just shows how competitive the Series is and will help boost and create new opportunities for all that are involved. Chevrolet’s presence helps to elevate the competition level and will provide more excitement for the fans and sponsors.

DRR team owners, Dennis Reinbold and Robbie Buhl, are both happy about the return of manufacturer competition and Chevrolet and what this means for the Series and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.

“This is a big day for IndyCar racing as we welcome Chevy back into the sport. It really shows how our momentum is continuing to grow at a rapid pace. We really look forward to things to come and are excited to be a part of IndyCar racing as it continues to grow,” commented Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Co-Owner, Dennis Reinbold.

Feeling the same is Buhl, “This is a great step for the IZOD IndyCar Series as it will help make our racing even more competitive and will create more excitement for the fans. With Chevrolet coming on board, they will bring significant marketing and activation resources to our Series. This is something that IndyCar has needed for a long time and I think it shows the positive direction that we are headed in.”

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is thrilled about this new opportunity for the Series. For more information and updates on the team, please visit www.dreyerreinboldracing.com.

About Dreyer & Reinbold Racing:

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is entering its 12th season of full-time competition in 2011, making it one of the longest-tenured teams in IZOD IndyCar Series competition. Current Co-Owners, Dennis Reinbold and Robbie Buhl, first teamed in full-time competition at the Walt Disney World Speedway in January of 2000. With Buhl behind the wheel, the two owners tasted victory in their debut race. The 2009 IZOD IndyCar Series season-opener, on the streets of St. Petersburg, marked Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s 200th series start.

DRR now has over 270 starts to tuck under its belt and has qualified a total of 27 cars for the Indianapolis 500. In its history, the team has boasted a championship list of alumni drivers. Besides Buhl, the team has run Indianapolis 500 winners, Al Unser, Jr., Buddy Lazier, and Buddy Rice, along with IZOD IndyCar Series race winner, Ryan Briscoe. The team has one of the longest lines of heritage in American open-wheel racing and the Indianapolis 500 as Dennis Reinbold’s grandfather, “Pop” Dreyer, built leading roadsters that raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Obviously, he won the drivers championship last week. Our goal was to go out and lead the most laps and win the races. They built me trucks and everything I needed to do what I needed to do on the race track. They were flawless in the pits. Just a lot of hard work from all the guys at the shop. Like I said, everybody in this program from Georgia Boot, to Chevrolet, to Rheem, Copart, VFW, Longhorn, all the people who make this program go around.”

WHEN THAT LAST CAUTION CAME WERE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE CALL TO COME DOWN PIT ROAD FOR FOUR TIRES?

“Well, I think you know, when we had to pit under green there and nobody put tires on, everybody was a little concerned about their tires. There was only, not very many trucks left on the lead lap so they came down and put four tires on. We knew we would have a cushion with all the lapped trucks in between. I knew the No. 17 (Timothy Peters) was going to be a sitting duck. It all worked out.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GET THAT CHAMPIONSHIP AT A TRUCK OWNER?

“First thing I want to say is congratulations to Billy Ballew and Kyle (Busch) and all the guys that have driven the No. 51 truck. That is a lot of fun to race with those guys. Ron means a lot to me as a person. To see him in that truck and winning races and winning championships is something special personally. As a company, it is something that is a lot of fun to have raced for the last three championships. But to see what they have done is something that I am really proud of.”

YOU COULDN’T HAVE WRITTEN A BETTER SCRIPT TO END THIS SEASON.

“Yeah, I’ve just got to thank everybody at KHI. They built me two brand new trucks. A lot of different things that we wanted to do. Ernie Cope and all these guys for putting a lot of extra effort into this Georgia Boot Chevrolet. Gotta thank Rheem, Copart, Longhorn, VFW, all the people who have helped us with this program and year Hornaday has had. To close out the season like this is really what we wanted to do. We had to guard against Kyle (Busch) leading the most laps and winning the race. We accomplished that with these two trucks. Going to be a lot changed on these two teams over the next month. Danny Stockman is moving on to be Austin Dillon’s crew chief on the No. 3 truck so that makes me proud that a lot of these guys are able to move up in their careers. Really looking forward to making these things better than they were this year and I promise you we will.”

YOU WERE DRIVING AWAY TONIGHT AND THEN A LATE CAUTION MADE THINGS REALLY CONFUSING, TALK ABOUT THE CALL TO COME TO PIT ROAD.

“I just wanted to know how many guys were on the lead lap. I knew we had a big cushion with all the lap trucks in between us so we just put four tires on. I knew the No. 17 was a sitting duck there with four tires on our truck. It was a lot of fun. Just gotta thank everybody from Georgia Boot again, Chevrolet and everybody at KHI for all their hard work. There’s not a whole lot you can say about Hornaday. He’s a lot of fun to be around. He’s meant a lot to me and to race for championships three years in a row says a lot about the team. We’re going to work hard over the off season to make it better. Thank the fans for everything you guys do for us and we’ll keep racing hard.”

YOU GUYS WERE EXPECTED TO WIN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, TALK ABOUT HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS AND WIN IT SO CONVINCINGLY.

“I think obviously the middle of the year was really good. I didn’t think we started that good. I think that the end of the year we didn’t run as good as we did in the middle of the year with the No. 33. I think there was a little bit of lost focus on that particular team with some of the things going on. The guy behind the wheel makes up for a lot of it. These guys do a great job in the shop but without Ron Hornaday none of us are racing for three championships and he’ll race for another one next year.”

YOU BUILT SOMETHING SPECIAL, CONGRATULATIONS ON ANOTHER ONE.

“Thank you guys. Thanks everybody from SPEED too and all you do for our sport.”

MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 AUSTRALIAN GOLD SILVERADO, FINISHED 2ND: KNOW YOU WANTED THE CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT YOU HAD A GREAT SEASON:

“I wanted that championship bad, but gosh darnit, I wanted to win. I can’t thank these guys enough. This truck was good all night and we worked on this thing so much from when it rolled off the trailer. We knew we had a really good race truck going in to tonight. It qualified seventh, I was pretty happy with that, but I knew I had a pretty good race truck. I just wish we would have been able to run four or five laps there at the end instead of just one.”

A GREAT YEAR FOR THORSPORT RACING ALL AROUND:

“Yes, definitely. That says a lot for ThorSport and what they have done. We just keep making stuff better and better. Duke and Rhonda Thorson, they just keep giving us what we need to win races and win a championship. We are proving to them we can.”

TALK ABOUT THAT MOVE YOU MADE ON THE LAST RESTART FOR THE GREEN-WHITE-CHECKERED:

“This thing was really good. I pumped those tires up on that last run. The run before that we got behind, just caught some lapped traffic, just wrong position and the No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) and the No. 17 (Timothy Peters) got out on us so far. We could slowly run them down but they had so much distance on us. Right there, the crew chief made a great call to take four tires right there at the end. I said I would rather go down swinging and we did. I hate it what happened when the No. 5 ran in to me and killed my left front fender on that last deal too. But we got to second. I don’t know how many second places that is this year, but we have had a lot of them. I have got to thank these guys. We had an awesome race truck right here.”

SECOND TONIGHT AND SECOND IN THE STANDINGS, THAT REALLY EXPLAINS THE KIND OF YEAR YOU GUYS HAVE HAD GOOD BUT NEVER QUITE GREAT ENOUGH.

“I would say we were the bridesmaids a lot this year. There’s been plenty of times when we had the best truck and didn’t win races. We got beat on fuel mileage. All I can say is I can’t wait until we have normal pit stops again where we take four tires and fuel at the same time because I know we’ve lost two races because of that pit strategy. All in all a pretty good year. Not ecstatic about it but definitely happy about it because we keep making progress. Duke and Ronda Thorson, Menards, Australian Gold and Chevy and we keep getting better and better and that’s what we’re out here to do. Building new trucks this winter and we’re going to be tough for next year.”

YOU’VE GOT TO CRAWL BEFORE YOU CAN WALK, DID THIS YEAR LAY THE FOUNDATION SO YOU CAN GO OUT AND WIN THAT CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT YEAR?

“Yeah. I mean we know we can. We’ve got a great group of guys. I know I can do it and they know they can do it now. Like you said crawl before you can walk and run, really. We’ve proved that we can do that. We’ve got the consistency and like I said its so tough to win these races these days. We had two taken away from us and could have been a lot different if those weren’t taken away from us but all in all a pretty good year.”

CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON.

“Thank you. Thank all the fans for coming out and supporting us and everything you guys do for us.”

AS FAR AS TONIGHT’S RACE, WAS IT AS MUCH FUN AS IT WAS TO WATCH?

“I love this race track. The last two or three years, it hasn’t been the best to me. But, we brought this truck that has been real good to us all year. They keep working on it and making it better and better. We are building some new stuff for next year and I can promise you we are going to make one heck of a run for that championship.”

RON HORNADAY, NO. 33 LONGHORN SILVERADO, FINISHED 8TH AND CLAIMED FOURTH NCWTS CHAMPIONSHIP: “IT WAS OFFICIAL A WEEK AGO BUT TONIGHT YOU GUYS CAN REALLY START THE CELEBRATION.

“No its not. Kevin and DeLana have been giving us truck all year. To win the owner’s you’ve got to do that. It’s everything. You can’t just win the driver’s it takes a whole team. These guys do it all and like I said when Kyle (Busch) comes over here and runs he just steps up the program and makes us run that much harder. A lot of sponsors to thank. Definitely have to thank Longhorn tonight and Chevrolet. All the fans who stick it out with these guys. We’ve got Georgia Boots, VFW, I’m so sick I’m out of breath. I didn’t even want to run the last 10 laps. Turtle Wax, Wylie-X and just a lot of people have been helping me out especially Indian Motorcycles.”

HAVE YOU GOTTEN THE GRAVITY OF WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A FOURTH CHAMPIONSHIP IN NASCAR, IT’S QUITE A FEAT?

“Well I appreciate that. If it wasn’t for getting this owners too it wouldn’t have been that good but to come here and win them both. You don’t think about that, to come down here and win four championships you don’t think about the owners. Busch ran us hard and we had to go out there and try to beat him. Good night for KHI all the way around.”

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 4TH NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP:

“Thank you. Well first of all I have to thank Camping World for sponsoring this great series that NASCAR’s got. But Kevin and Delana have just given me a chance to drive their rocketships. Got to thank Longhorn, VFW, Georgia Boots, Turtle Wax……everybody. It just takes everybody including Rheem and it just takes everybody. Its just so fun to come out here and do this.
“Being as sick as I was I didn’t even want to drive the truck and was hoping Kevin would switch the numbers but it worked out for the best and we are going to take this one and go on.”

15 – 20 YEARS AGO YOU WERE SLUGGING IT OUT BUILDING RACE CARS FOR A LIVING, UNTIL A CALL FROM DALE EARNHARDT. DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD BE HERE MULTIPLE TIMES AS YOU HAVE?

“Its your dream. And I lost my father a year ago and he gave me a token deal before he passed away he said he has left a lot of room for three or four more championships. And he said don’t quit until you fill that up and as long as Kevin and Delana will have me I will keep putting engravements on that and grandma I hope you are doing better we will see you here in a couple of days. Bill and all the family and grandkids back at home we will be home soon.”

TALK ABOUT THE RACE TRUCKS YOU HAVE HAD, AND RICK REN AS THE CREW CHIEF, AND THE JOB THAT HE AND EVERYONE HAS DONE. “It just shows you what Kevin and Delana have done, letting these guys build new trucks and its not because of……………….Kevin just keeps selling them and they just keep building new trucks week in and week out. Kevin drove a brand new truck tonight and one last week and those are my trucks for next year so that is pretty cool.

“It was so fun and I don’t even know how to explain it. Mark Smith thank you for your motors and what you do for us. Congratulations on that championship for him to. PME motors – they have been with us all year and I really got to thank them because they go through thick and thin and give us some great horsepower. So Mark’s happy and thank you very much.”

Chevy is encouraging people from all over the country to nominate friends or family members who, while in uniform, have demonstrated the military spirit of overcoming obstacles, inspiring others and positively impacting their country and community. The promotion will officially kick off during this weekend’s Chevy Rock & Roll 400 in Richmond, Virginia and culminates during the “43rd Annual CMA Awards” on November 11th, live on the ABC Television Network when the winning serviceman or woman and family will attend.

Chevrolet General Director, Advertising and Sales Promotion Kim Kosak said, “Anchored by our naturally strong partnerships with NASCAR and the CMA, we have created a very sincere promotion that honors America’s Heroes, with the partnership of America’s music and America’s most watched sport.”

Friends and family of the service members will be asked to submit a video or written essay. In early October, five finalists will be chosen for a public voting period where they will be asked to choose which story most inspires them. Those that go online to vote will be entered into a sweepstakes for a chance to win a VIP trip for two to a 2010 NASCAR race.

“Chevy is proud to combine its support of both NASCAR and Country Music through its partnerships with Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports, Richmond International Raceway and CMA to help tell the stories of these American Heroes,” said Kosak.

“As the driver of the No. 88 AMP Energy/National Guard Chevy, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many of the military heroes risking their lives every day to protect our freedom. It’s an honor for me to participate in this program. I think this is an awesome way to pay tribute to those men and women,” said Earnhardt. “Everyone who has a story to tell about a member of the military should log on to www.youreverydayhero.com and tell us your story.”

The promotion will culminate at the CMA Awards in Nashville, TN on November 11th when the winning service member and his or her family will attend the show and get the opportunity to meet Dale Earnhardt Jr. The awards will be broadcast live from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Wednesday, Nov.11 (8:00-11:00 PM/ET) on the ABC Television Network.
