Championship Contender: Dale Earnhardt’s First Charlotte Win Propelled the Intimidator to First NASCAR Championship

(Sept. 25, 2015) – On a chilly, fall October day in 1980 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, 29-year-old Dale Earnhardt defeated 41-year-old Cale Yarborough, a three-time champion, at the National 500 (now the Bank of America 500). The victory signaled the beginning of the changing of the guard in NASCAR’s premier series. Earnhardt, a member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, grew up about 12 miles from Charlotte Motor Speedway in Kannapolis and he had dreamed of winning a NASCAR premier series race at the track since childhood. The victory, however, did more than fulfill Earnhardt’s childhood dream.
