Track’s security director Mike Richardson accepts award for being an industry leader during 2011 Southern 500 race weekend

DARLINGTON, S.C. (Jan. 10, 2012) – One of the top priorities for Darlington Raceway each year is to make sure its race fans, competitors, media and others attending the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Southern 500 race weekend every May have a safe and enjoyable experience when they visit the track “Too Tough to Tame.”
That priority did not go unnoticed by NASCAR as Darlington Raceway, and its security director Mike Richardson, were honored by receiving the sanctioning bodies “Excellence in Service Award” for its top notch security efforts for the 2011 season.
Darlington was one of two tracks to accept NASCAR’s highest honor for its security efforts along with Auto Club Speedway in California.
Richardson accepted the award on Monday from NASCAR Director of Security Mike Lentz at their annual meetings in Charlotte, N.C.
The award holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Richardson and the Darlington Raceway security staff, who spend tireless hours making sure visitors to their track leave the historic facility and return home safe with the help of numerous South Carolina law enforcement agencies.
“This award means a lot to all of us,” Richardson said. “We work very hard to make sure the facility is safe for our fans and competitors and that everyone who visits our great track receives a memorable experience while they are here. All the credit needs to go out to our security team and all the local and state law enforcement agencies that help us so much in making it a special race weekend for everyone that attends. We wouldn’t be receiving this award if not for all of them.”
