September 17, 2011

No. 31 BRANDT News and Notes

Defending Chicagoland Winner… Justin Allgaier is the defending NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) winner at Chicagoland Speedway. This past June he claimed victory by saving enough fuel and coasting to the finish line to earn his second-career NNS victory. Having never finished outside the top-10, he has earned one victory, one top-five and three top-10 finishes in just three career starts at the 1.5-mile oval. He has an average start of 11th with an average finish of seventh along with a 100% lap completion rate.

Home Again, Home Again… Allgaier, hails from Riverton, Ill., about 2.5-hours from Chicagoland Speedway. The 25-year-old, who got his start racing quarter-midgets throughout the Midwest, progressed through the ARCA Racing Series and made his NNS debut in 2008. Since then he has captured two wins, three poles, 17 top-five and 46 top-10 NNS finishes.

Allgaier Heads to Chicagoland Fifth in Points… Allgaier heads to Chicagoland in fifth-place in the NNS championship point standings after his ninth-place finish at Richmond International Raceway. He is 75 points behind leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr. All three championship-contending Turner Motorsports drivers are currently in the top-10, with Reed Sorenson in third and Jason Leffler in sixth-place.

This Week’s Impala… The No. 31 BRANDT Chevy team will hit the track with chassis TMS-121 this Saturday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway for the Dollar General 300. This chassis claimed victory at Chicagoland earlier this spring. In five starts this season, this chassis has notched one win, two top-five and three top-10 finishes.

In the Loop… Thus far in 2011, Allgaier ranks among the top-10 in several of NASCAR’s Loop Data statistics: Quality Passes (3rd), Fastest on Restarts (6th), Laps in the Top-15 (6th), Average Running Position (8th), Percentage of Laps Run on the Lead Lap (8th), Fastest Speed in Traffic (9th), Fastest Early in the Run (10th) and Fastest Late in the Run (10th).

Turner Motorsports In the Hunt… In 27 Nationwide Series events in 2011, Turner Motorsports-prepared entries have notched three wins, 20 top-five and 53 top-10 finishes.

Dollar General 300 powered by Coca-Cola… Longtime Turner Motorsports partner, Dollar General, will serve as title sponsor of this weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event at Chicagoland Speedway. Dollar General will also serve as title sponsor of the October NNS event at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage.

Reporting From the Car… Allgaier will be the broadcast in-race reporter this Saturday afternoon from Chicagoland Speedway. Race coverage begins at 3pm live on ESPN2.

“I’m so excited to head back to Chicagoland this weekend. We’re coming off two top-10 finishes and have the extra confidence going into the weekend as the defending winner. I have a feeling that we’ll unload really well, have a strong night and be in contention to find ourselves back in victory lane celebrating with Brandt and Dollar General. It would be great opportunity to grab another win for BRANDT especially since this is their home track, as well as my own.”

This will mark Kahne’s seventh start of the season for Turner Motorsports this season. Next up, Kahne will compete in two more races for the team at Dover International Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Familiar voice on the radio… The No. 30 Rexall crew is the same team Kahne works with when he jumps behind the wheel of Turner Motorsports’ No. 38 entry. Under Stewart Cooper’s guidance this season, Kahne has earned two top-five and three top-10 finishes, leading 43 laps along the way.

Chicagoland Speedway: by the numbers… In six NNS starts at Chicagoland Speedway, Kahne has one top-five and one top-10 finish.

Turner Motorsports: In the Hunt… In 27 Nationwide Series events in 2011, Turner Motorsports-prepared entries have notched three wins, 20 top-five and 53 top-10 finishes. All three of Turner Motorsports’ championship-contending drivers are inside the top-six in the driver point standings with Reed Sorenson in third, Justin Allgaier in fifth and Jason Leffler in sixth.

This week’s Impala… The No. 30 Rexall team will hit the track with chassis TMS-124 this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway. This chassis has seen track action several times this season at Texas Motor Speedway, Darlington Raceway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Michigan International Speedway.

Kasey Kahne on racing at Chicagoland Speedway

“I am looking forward to running in the Nationwide Series again this weekend. It’s fun to get a chance to run these races because we don’t worry about points, we are out for the win. I know we are close to getting to victory lane with these Turner Motorsports guys and hopefully we can do it this weekend in the No. 30 Rexall Chevy. Chicagoland is a great 1.5-mile track where you can run the bottom and middle groove. Recently, a lot of these Nationwide races have come down to fuel mileage and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it come down to that again this weekend.”

No. 38 Great Clips Chevrolet News and Notes

Leffler at Chicagoland Speedway, by the numbers… In his last three NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) starts at Chicagoland, Jason Leffler has proved impressive capturing three top-fives with an average finishing position of 4.6. In a total of eight NNS starts at the 1.5-mile track, Leffler has logged three top-five and four top-10 finishes.

Leffler’s In the Loop… According to NASCAR’s Loop Data Statistics, Leffler is ranked in the top-five in a number of categories at Chicagoland including Closers (1st), Green-Flag Passes (1st), Fastest Lap Run (5th), and Laps in the Top-15 (5th).

This week’s Impala…. This weekend at Chicagoland Speedway the No. 38 Great Clips team will unload chassis TMS-127. This is the team’s “go-to” chassis as it has more seen more track time than any other car in rotation. Leffler has driven TMS-127 at Kentucky Speedway (13th), Michigan Int’l Speedway (10th), Dover Int’l Speedway (11th), Charlotte Motor Speedway (21st) and Darlington Raceway (9th) and Atlanta Motor Speedway (9th).

Turner Motorsports: In the hunt… In 27 Nationwide Series events in 2011, Turner Motorsports-prepared entries have notched three wins, 20 top-five and 53 top-10 finishes. All three of Turner Motorsports’ championship-contending drivers are inside the top-six in the driver point standings with Reed Sorenson in third, Justin Allgaier in fifth and Leffler in sixth.

Happy 10-Year Anniversary, Great Clips… This season marks Great Clips’ 10-year anniversary as a primary sponsor in the NNS. The Minneapolis-based Great Clips, Inc., which is currently the longest-running primary sponsor in the series, came onto the scene in 2001 as a primary sponsor of Akins Motorsports No. 38 entry, then driven by Christian Elder.

Leffler on SIRIUS’ Morning Drive every Wednesday… Don’t forget to tune in to SIRIUS Radio’s “Morning Drive” with Mike Bagley and Pete Pistone every Wednesday at 10:30am to hear Leffler’s take on recent events in the Nationwide Series and what you can expect from the week’s upcoming race.

“Chicagoland is a fast track with multiple grooves so it’s pretty easy to pass. You can run the high groove or the bottom groove and move around as much or as little as you need to based on how the car is handling. Generally, you don’t see a lot of cautions during this race so it often comes down to fuel mileage and pit strategy in the end. This Great Clips team has grown stronger and stronger at these 1.5-mile tracks and we have come away with top-five finishes in the last three races here, so I feel pretty sure that we can go in this weekend and be a top contender for the win on Saturday night in the Dollar General 300.”

September 17, 2011

No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet News and Notes

Trying to Pick Up Steam with Seven To Go - Reed Sorenson and his Dollar General team made gains with their eighth-place finish at Richmond International Raceway last weekend, even if it didn’t necessarily reflect as much in the point standings. On the season, Sorenson has one win, seven top-five and 16 top-10 finishes along with 85 laps led. While the Dollar General team still has an uphill climb to erase a now 45-point deficit, there are still seven races remaining in the 2011 season where anything can happen.

Dollar General 300 - Longtime Turner Motorsports partner Dollar General will serve as the title sponsor for this weekend’s 200 lap event at Chicagoland Speedway. This is the fourth year Dollar General has sponsored the event.

Sorenson at Chicagoland - Sorenson is making his sixth career NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) start at the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway. In his five previous starts, Sorenson has accrued four top-10 finishes and 30 laps led with an average start of 16.4 coupled with an average finish of 9.4. Sorenson has also completed 100 percent of the laps he’s attempted. In the spring Chicagoland race, Sorenson scored a sixth-place finish after starting seventh.

Reading with Reed at Chicagoland – Wanting to contribute to one of his sponsor’s key initiatives, Sorenson will again head out to the Kids Club Zone at Chicagoland Speedway at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 16 to read to a group of children who belong to the Kids Club. Dollar General’s commitment to literacy is a very important aspect of the company’s culture. Co-founder, J. L. Turner, was functionally illiterate when he started the company.

Fans Can Win Big with Dollar General - Dollar General, an Official Partner of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ is offering customers the chance to win more than 9,000 prizes including free gas for a year, a trip for two to Las Vegas for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion’s Week™ and $250,000. The “Race in to Win” sweepstakes officially launched Aug. 28 and runs through November 12, 2011. When customers purchase qualifying items from DG, they are given a code on their receipt to enter online at dollargeneral.com. It is the first-ever national retail program around the Chase, NASCAR’s version of the playoffs.

This Week’s Impala – This weekend, Sorenson will pilot TMS-309 in the Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. This car last saw track time at the second Nashville race in July where Sorenson finished eighth after starting 11th.

Reed Sorenson - Photo Credit: John Harrelson / Getty Images for NASCAR

Sorenson on racing in the Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland:

“This weekend’s race is a pretty big deal for my team and sponsor. It would mean so much to be able to get them to victory lane at Chicagoland, especially being the title sponsor of the race. We still understand that we have an uphill climb as we try to regain the points we lost in the standings, but all we can do is continue to put ourselves in a position for solid finishes and capitalize on the mistakes of our competitors. We had a good race here earlier in the season and I think we can definitely apply what we learned then to our second start this weekend. Dollar General has been such a great sponsor for us at Turner Motorsports and it’d be great to be able to thank them with a win this weekend.”

No. 12 Verizon Dodge Charger

Gateway International Raceway – Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250

July 17, 2010

Verizon Team News and Notes

This Week’s Verizon Dodge … Justin Allgaier will pilot Penske Racing chassis PRS-017 in Saturday night’s Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at Gateway International Raceway. This is the same Dodge Charger that Allgaier used to record his first career Nationwide Series pole at Memphis Motorsports Park in October, 2009. It most recently raced at Richmond International Raceway in April, where the 2009 Nationwide Series Rookie of the Year started ninth and finished 15th.

Welcome Home, Justin … Allgaier, a native of Riverton, Ill., grew up just over 100 miles northeast of Gateway International Raceway. He began his career racing quarter midgets in his home state at the age of five. Since then, he has claimed two poles, one win, eight top-five and 22 top-10 finishes in 57 Nationwide Series starts; two poles, eight wins, 31 top fives and 45 top 10s and the 2008 championship in 86 ARCA Series starts; and two top-25 finishes in eight Camping World Truck Series races.

Mid-Year Report … At the midpoint of the 2010 season, Allgaier has accumulated one pole, one win, five top-five and 10 top-10 finishes, an average starting position of 11.9 and an average finish of 10.9. Allgaier has led 131 laps of competition and has completed 99.4 percent of the laps contested (3,283 of 3,304) over the first 17 races.
Get to the Points … Allgaier is currently ranked fourth in the championship point standings, 454 markers behind leader and Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski, and 29 points behind third-place contender Kyle Busch.

Best in Class … Allgaier’s fourth-place position in the point standings is best among full-time, Nationwide Series-only drivers. Allgaier leads fellow Nationwide-only driver Steve Wallace, currently ranked eighth, by 408 points.

Allgaier at Gateway … In his only previous NASCAR Nationwide Series start at Gateway International Raceway in July of 2009, Allgaier recorded an 11th-place finish.

Are You Experienced? … In addition to his one previous Nationwide Series start at the 1.25-mile venue, Allgaier has competed in four ARCA Series races at Gateway, posting his track-best finish of fourth in August of 2007.

Start Your Engines … Allgaier will join the race fans in attendance at Gateway International Raceway on Saturday night in giving the field the command to start their engines.

Last Time Out … Allgaier had a strong showing in last Friday night’s Dollar General 300 powered by Coca-Cola at Chicagoland Speedway, overcoming an untimely caution and late-race skirmish to record a 10th-place finish.
Penske Racing in 2010 … With 18 races completed in the 2010 season, Penske Racing’s two NASCAR Nationwide Series entries have recorded five poles, four wins, a combined 19 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes. Penske Dodges have completed 6,586 of 6,608 laps contested, and have been atop the leaderboard for 760 laps with drivers Allgaier and Keselowski.

Meet the Press… Allgaier will be available at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach, Ill. to field questions from the gathered media on Thursday, July 15 at noon CDT.

Meet the Driver … Fans can meet Allgaier on Friday, July 16 from 3:15 – 4:45 p.m. when he participates in the NASCAR Nationwide Series group autograph session on pit road at Gateway International Raceway. The following day, he will sign autographs for fans at the Penske Racing souvenir trailer, located in the midway at Gateway International Raceway, from 12:45 – 2:00 p.m. Immediately following the autograph session, he will head to the Dodge display, also located in the midway, to participate in a question and answer session from 2:05 to 2:25 p.m.

Happy Birthday, Josh … Jack man Josh Pech will celebrate his 23rd birthday on Wednesday, July 14.

“Gateway has always been cool for me because it’s the first speedway that I raced on. It has long straightaways and tight corners, and that makes it a lot of fun because you really have to drive the race track. You’re only going to be good at one end of the track, and you’ll have to compromise at the other. We ran pretty well at Gateway last year; we felt like we could have contended for the win but we got beat on pit strategy. The guys did a great job, it was just unfortunate that we got caught when the caution flag came out.”

Justin Allgaier on racing at his home track

“I think my wife, Ashley, has about 1,200 tickets sold to Justin Allgaier fans, so I’m expecting a big cheering section. I’ll be honest with you, I feel that I perform better when there’s something big at stake, and having all of those people in the grandstands probably drives me that much more. I don’t want to let them down. I’m a crowd pleaser; I want to make them happy. So, we’ll do what we can to make sure they’ve got something to cheer about Saturday night.”

Crew chief Chad Walter on Gateway International Raceway

“Gateway is a challenging track with very different corners at each end. It’s like a paperclip in Turns 1 and 2, and has long, sweeping turns at the other end of the track. Getting our Verizon Dodge loose enough to turn in 1 and 2 while still being able to put the power down through Turns 3 and 4 is what will make our race a lot more enjoyable. This track means a lot to Justin, it’s one of his favorites, so we know that he’ll be up on the wheel to get a good finish for his hometown crowd.”

(July 12, 2010) – The NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) returned to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend for the annual battle under the Joliet, Illinois night sky. As the sun dipped behind the grandstands, Reed Sorenson strapped into the No. 32 Dollar General Camry and focused on charging to the front from his 20th-place starting position. Sorenson drove to an eighth-place finish in Friday night’s Dollar General 300 Powered by Coca-Cola, marking his 10th top-10 finish of the season.

Friday was a busy day for NNS teams, packed with two practice sessions, qualifying and the 200-lap event. As the race began, drivers were not exactly sure what handling to expect of their cars as the sun set on the warm and humid evening. As the green flag flew, Sorenson went to work to advance his Camry through the field. He climbed into the top-15 in only 14 laps.

As he circled the track, he reported to crew chief, Trent Owens, that the car felt like it had a loose wheel. As he powered around the 1.5-mimle speedway, he reported that the unidentifiable condition continued. Owens told his driver that they would come to pit road earlier than planned to evaluate the situation.

As the long run progressed, Sorenson remained in the 14th position and reported that the condition was resulting in a lack of front grip, especially going into the center of the turns. On lap 54, Owens called him to pit road where the Dollar General crew serviced the No. 32 with four fresh tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. As the pit stop cycled through, Sorenson found himself in the 13th spot by lap 59. He reported to Owens that the car’s handling felt “darty,” especially down the straightaways.

The first caution of the night came at lap 70 for an accident in turn three. Running in 13th when the yellow flag was displayed, Sorenson updated Owens on the car’s handling. “The balance is good,” he said. “We are about as free as we can have it, though.”

Sorenson came to pit road on lap 71 for four tires, an air pressure adjustment and fuel. The Dollar General crew took extra time to examine the front suspension, looking for the cause of the “darty” sensation that their driver continued to experience. Confirming that both tie rods were tight, they returned the Toyota to the track for the restart in the 15thposition.

Reed Sorenson

By lap 91, Sorenson drove the Dollar General Camry into the top-10. He reported that the he was now experiencing a tight-handling condition. He continued to climb through the field, advancing to the seventh position on lap 126. As the run progressed, the car’s handling loosened again.

As leaders began making their next round of pit stops under green-flag conditions, Sorenson came to pit road on lap 133 for four new tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment. As the stops cycled through, he returned to the 10th position on lap 136.

The second caution of the night came on lap 142 for debris on the racetrack. Owens called his driver to pit road on lap 143. He instructed the crew that it would be a fuel-only pit stop, electing to save their final set of Goodyear tires for a final stop. The team also pulled a piece of tape from the front grill to combat the rising water temperature that Sorenson had reported. He restarted from the 10th spot on lap 148.

Sorenson battled against cars with fresher tires and maintained his position of 10th until the yellow flag was displayed again on lap 186 for debris. Owens called him to pit road for service on lap 186. The crew quickly changed four tires and topped the car off with fuel. The No. 32 lined up in the 12th spot for the restart on lap 191.

With new tires, Sorenson quickly drove up to the 10th position again. A multi-car accident that littered the front stretch with wreckage brought out the fifth and final caution of the night on lap 197, setting the stage for a green-white-checkered finish. On lap 201, the field returned to green-flag racing. In the final two-lap shootout, Sorenson climbed to an eighth-place finish.

“It was a frustrating evening for everyone on the Dollar General team tonight,” said Sorenson. “We had a fast car, but some unexplainable handling issues prevented us from getting the finish we deserved. Thank you to everyone at Dollar General. This was a special night for them being the title sponsor of the Nationwide race here at Chicagoland. I had hoped we’d be able to celebrate with them in their victory lane. We’ll take the car back to the shop and see what we can find. We’ll move onto Gateway, which has been a good track to me in the past. I had a great run with this team last year, too. Hopefully we can get the monkey off our back and bring home some hardware.”

Next Stop: The NASCAR Nationwide Series teams heads to Gateway International Raceway next weekend for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250. The Saturday night race will be broadcast on ESPN2 and on MRN Radio affiliates. LIVE coverage on ESPN2 begins at 7:00 p.m. EST with the green flag scheduled to drop at 8:00 p.m.

(July 9, 2010) - Brian Scott finished a career-best third in the Dollar General 300 Powered By Coca-Cola on Friday at Chicagoland Speedway. Battling Cup Series regulars, Scott endured two late-race caution flags to pick up six spots in the last nine laps.

Qualifying 18th, Scott knew his AccuDoc Solutions Camry was much better on race runs than what his qualifying effort had shown. With new crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz at the helm, the team was confident in their race-pace speeds shown in practice earlier that day.

Scott wasted no time in moving to the front. Picking up six spots in the first two laps, he quickly gained the 12th position. Before green-flag pit stops began on lap 47, radio chatter was limited. Scott’s focus was laser intense. Just before the stop, Scott radioed to the crew that the car was a bit tight in the center of the corner, but overall, he was happy.

Four tires and fuel later, Scott went back to work after the pit stop. Picking up one spot in the pits under green, the AccuDoc Solutions Camry sat in the 11th position. Since taking tires, Scott began diagnosing a loose condition that was hurting his short run speeds. Only asking for lap times, Scott began moving his line around the race track to search for grip.

The first yellow flag of the night flew on lap 70 with Scott in the 11th position. Scott needed more speed on short runs and new interim crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz ordered Scott to bring the AccuDoc Solutions Camry down pit road for adjustments. The Braun Racing No. 11 team fired four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment at the AccuDoc Solutions Camry in a lightening quick stop that had Scott restarting 13th.

Despite still being loose on short runs, 15 laps into the session Scott began gaining time on the leaders. Working his way all the way back up to 7th, he still needed more grip on shorter runs. Stankiewicz again brought Scott down pit road during green-flag pit stops on lap 134. Another air pressure adjustment on four tires and fuel gave Scott a car to work toward the end of the 200-lap event.

When the fuel mileage results came apparent to team engineer Brian Harrison, he quickly shared them with Stankiewicz. The interim crew chief of the No. 11 made a quick request of Scott to save some fuel, letting him know that they were five laps short on fuel. Just then, a yellow flag flew, giving Scott the fuel mileage needed for the end.

Restarting eighth, Scott was among the elite with 50 laps to go. Settling into ninth position as the laps wound down, it began looking like Scott would score his fourth top-10 of the season. Just then, a yellow flag flew with 15 laps to go, bunching the field back together again. Quickly, the crew chiefs up and down pit road were forced to make a strategy call. At the last second, Stankiewicz called Scott to pit road for two tires, a splash of fuel and a track bar adjustment.

Restarting fifth with 10 laps to go, Scott fought Kyle Busch side-by-side for fourth-place. After clearing him with four laps to go, another yellow flew set the field up for a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart, Scott battled side-by-side with the No. 10 Beringer Camry of David Reuitmann for third before another yellow flag flew, finishing the race under caution. The 22-year-old Boise, ID native finished his NASCAR Nationwide Series career-best, third place.

“What an incredible night,” Scott said after the race. “To see Braun Racing’s four cars in the top eight positions is just a testament to how hard this team works to give us great cars. Jeff Stankiewicz did an incredible job all night and made the right two-tire call at the end to give us great track position as well as the proper adjustments to turn a long run car into a short run car. The AccuDoc Solutions Camry was great today, the team did good job in the pits. It’s so nice to be fighting for top-10’s with all the Cup Series regulars. I have to thank this AccuDoc Solutions team, Braun Racing, BigSpot.com and all of our other partners for sticking with us through our recent slump. This team can do it and we proved it here tonight.”

This 3rd place finish puts Scott 13th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship standings, 2 points out of 12th and 1070 points from the lead.

Next Stop: The NASCAR Nationwide Series heads to Gateway International Raceway this weekend for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250. The Saturday evening race will be broadcast LIVE on ESPN2 starting at 7:30 p.m. EST. The green flag is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST.

As a result, Logano had to settle for a second-place finish in the Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway.

Logano started the race in fifth, but began moving his way toward the front early. By lap 50, Logano had found himself in the top three and was racing behind Busch in second just a few laps later. Logano was a constant threat inside the top three during the middle portion of the event.

After adjustments by crew chief Kevin Kidd and great stops by the No. 20 GameStop team, Logano found himself right on the bumper of Busch on lap 147 and, on lap 148, took the lead for the first time. Logano held the top spot until a late-race caution fell on lap 187 and everyone came in for their final stop. Kidd and the GameStop crew elected to take two tires and came out of the pits second to Brad Keselowski.

When the race restarted, Logano took the lead and looked to be on his way to the victory until a final caution caused a green-white-checker finish. Keselowski was to start second on the final restart, but ran out of fuel, putting Busch side-by-side with his teammate. Logano and Busch raced door-to-door until Busch, utilizing four fresh tires, got a run and took the top spot away from the GameStop Toyota heading to the white flag. Logano had to settle for second as the checkers flew.

With the second-place finish, Logano remained seventh in the NASCAR Nationwide Series point standings. More importantly, the No. 20 GameStop Toyota trimmed their deficit in the owner’s point standings to just 100 points behind Penske Racing’s #22. The team remains third in the owner’s standings.

Joey Logano Talks:

“This is a tough pill to swallow. I think late in the race there, we had the car to beat. We were well on our way to the win when we had that late caution. Kevin (Kidd, crew chief) had us come and take two tires, which was a great call. That got us out up front, which was important. With the No. 22 (Keselowski) on my outside, I was able to get the jump on him and start to pull away.

“Then, when the No. 22 ran out of gas there on that green-white-checker, Kyle (Busch) moved up beside me. I was kinda confused what that was all about. I would have through third place should move up. But Kyle got a good jump and did what he needed to do on that restart. He got beside me and crowded me and got me loose. That is what you do when you are going for a win on the last couple of laps. So congrats to him. I’m glad that if I didn’t win, at least we had a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota up there. I am just embarrassed I wasn’t able to get the win for the GameStop team.

“In the end, it was a good run and I’m excited because we had some GameStop and Warner Brothers people here with this LEGO® Harry Potter™: Years 1-4 car. They got to see an exciting race and a great finish. I just wish I could have gotten them into Victory Lane. But, that is how it goes. We’ll be back to get them here next year. A first and a second at this track in two years isn’t something to be too upset about.”

Kevin Kidd Quotes:

“I know that Joey is disappointed, but he has nothing to be disappointed about. We were right there in contention for the win up until the end of the race. That is what you want. Joey just had a tough restart, and Kyle had four fresh tires. There is nothing you can do about that. He was on the outside of Joey and got him loose, and Joey slipped back. This team is still really proud of him and don’t believe there is a better driver out there.”

What’s Next:

The No. 20 GameStop Toyota will take several weeks off before heading into the meat of their season. Logano and the team will start their first of five-straight races at Watkins Glen International for the Zippo 200 on Aug. 7.

Event: Dollar General 300 (Round 18 of 35)
Series: NASCAR Nationwide Series
Location: Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill. (1.5-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 8th/1st (Running, completed 203 of 203 laps in a green-white-checkered finish)
Winner: Kyle Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing (Toyota)

As a summer heat wave scorched the East Coast, Kyle Busch brought the heat to the Midwest by dominating Friday night’s Dollar General 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill.

The driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs/OfficeMax Toyota Camry blistered the 1.5-mile oval throughout much of the 203-lap contest, as he took the lead on just the 10th circuit after starting eighth.

Busch led the next 46 laps before making a scheduled pit stop under green for four tires and fuel. But just as the 25-year-old was fast on the racetrack, he was also fast on pit road – too fast, it turned out. Busch was nabbed for speeding, and he had to serve a pass-through penalty on lap 60 that sent him down pit road at the mandated 45 mph speed limit.

That dropped him to sixth, 14 seconds behind new leader Brad Keselowski. Yet Busch took what little drama the miscue created and squashed it, roaring back into the lead on lap 81.

The Las Vegas native’s only serious challenge came from his Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate Joey Logano, who managed to get ahead of Busch during a round of pit stops while the race was under caution on lap 143.

For the lap-148 restart, Logano and Busch were 1-2, and Logano scored the holeshot as the field sailed off into turns one and two. Logano held his advantage over Busch until a caution on lap 185 allowed Busch and the rest of the leaders to come to pit road for fresh tires.

The Z-Line Designs team took full advantage of the opportunity, making a chassis adjustment along the way to loosen up the No. 18 machine through the track’s corners.

With other teams opting to take only two tires, Busch restarted in sixth on lap 190 with four fresh tires, creating a shootout to the finish. Busch rose to fourth, but his once dominant car was now too tight, and a win that seemed all but certain was now very much in doubt.

However, when rookie Trevor Bayne smacked the turn one wall on lap 198, it set up a green-white-checkered finish. Making matters more interesting was second-place Keselowski running out of fuel before the field took the green. That allowed Busch to inherit the outside of row one for what would be the race’s final restart.

“They gave it to us and we restarted on the outside next to Joey,” Busch said. “You know you just have to get a good restart at that point and be able to get up there next to him through (turns) one and two and try to hold him down a little bit and stay alongside him. We were able to do that and we were able to clear him through (turns) three and four.”

When the green flag dropped, the two JGR drivers charged into turn one in a tenacious battle for the lead. Busch held a slight edge over Logano as the duo came off turn two, and then held his right foot to the floor entering turn three, escaping from Logano as they came off turn four to take the white flag.

“Our car was fast, man. It was fast when we unloaded it. It was one of the best cars here all weekend. Clean air was really important, but it came to us right at the end and things sort of fell our way.”

As the rest of the field came to the start/finish line, a multi-car accident off turn four unofficially ended the race, for the event would end under caution since the yellow flag waved on the final lap. All Busch had to do was cross the stripe one final time, and when he did, his series-leading seventh win of the season was his.

“It wasn’t easy,” said Busch, who can now claim second on the Nationwide Series all-time win all to himself, for his 37th career win pushed him past Kevin Harvick, who Busch had been tied with after winning June 26 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. “We had the track position when it mattered and the car got really, really tight on us. But, these guys never gave up. They knew I had it in me. I didn’t think I had it in me. It’s fun to race the Nationwide Series. I love it. To win as many as we won and to be successful as JGR – it’s fun every week. It’s always cool to come out here and put on a good show. ”

Busch wound up leading four times for a race-high 110 laps, pushing his Nationwide Series laps-led tally to an even more impressive 8,246 laps. Busch broke the series record at New Hampshire, where he led six times for a race-high 125 laps. The previous record-holder was Mark Martin with 8,082 laps led. Martin is the all-time win record-holder with 48.

“It’s pretty awesome. It feels great to be able to be second right now to Mark Martin,” Busch added. “I thought we were going to be second tonight to Joey, but we’ve got a lot ahead of us here. We can catch Mark and hopefully we can do it next year. We’ll see.”

Busch now has 73 victories in NASCAR’s top three divisions (Sprint Cup – 18; Nationwide – 37; Camping World Truck – 18). Even more impressive is that despite not running the full Nationwide Series schedule, Busch is third in the championship standings, 425 points behind series leader Keselowski. Busch sat out a string of standalone events in June at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, Kentucky Speedway in Sparta and Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., before returning to the seat of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota at New Hampshire.

Rookie Brian Scott finished third behind Busch and Logano, while David Reutimann came home fourth. Jason Leffler, Carl Edwards, Harvick, Reed Sorenson, Jamie McMurray and Justin Allgaier comprised the remainder of the top-10.

There were five caution periods for 20 laps, with 13 drivers failing to finish the 203-lap race.

While Busch is not running the full Nationwide Series schedule, JGR’s No. 18 Toyota is competing for the owner’s title. It took over the top spot in the championship standings with the victory at Chicagoland, and it now holds a nine-point advantage over the No. 22 car of Penske Racing. JGR has won the past two Nationwide Series owner’s championships.

The next event on the Nationwide Series schedule is the July 17 Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill. The race starts at 8 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by ESPN2 beginning with its pre-race show at 7 p.m.
