Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway

No. 11 Shore Lodge Team Notes of Interest

· Brian Scott and the No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota team visit Chicagoland Speedway for the second of the track’s 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series events. Scott will be looking for redemption during this weekend’s Dollar General 300. The No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota team fielded a top-five performing car during the series’ June race at Chicagoland Speedway but came up a couple of laps short on fuel while running in the third position during the final laps of the race. Scott had to make a late stop for a splash of gas and eventually finished the race in 17th place.

· Prior to the June race at Chicago, the Boise, Idaho-native had made one other start at the 1.5-mile track in Nationwide Series competition. Scott picked up a third-place finish at Chicagoland’s only Nationwide Series race in 2010 after starting from the 18th position.

· The 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series is winding down with only seven races left for Scott and the No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Team to try to win. While the season has not been what the team had hoped for at the beginning of the year, the team is currently ranked in the top 10 in the Nationwide Series point standings. He is eight points behind Michael Annett in ninth place and 29 points behind Steven Wallace in eighth place.

· Through the first 27 races of the 2011 season, Scott has only failed to finish three events and he has completed 4,640 of the 4,997 laps run in Nationwide Series competition for a lap completion rate of 93 percent.

· Chassis #122 is the car the No. 11 Shore Lodge Team will race this weekend in Chicago. This chassis has been used by the team three times in 2011 and it has been raced to successful results at two of the three events. Scott earned top-10 finishes with Chassis #122 at Texas (10th place) and at Charlotte (eighth place). Scott also raced this car at Kentucky in July where he picked up a 15th-place finish. The backup car is Chassis #106 and it has not been raced during the 2011 season.

· Last Race: The No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota team battled a tight-handling condition on the car during the early stages of last weekend’ Friday night race at Richmond International Raceway. The team was making progress with the handling issues as the race went past the halfway point. The team made a stop during the third caution at lap 140 for adjustments and sent Scott back onto the track. When racing resumed at lap 146 Scott was hit from behind by driver Aric Almirola and sent hard into the retaining wall. The chassis was too damaged to return to the race and Scott was scored with a 32nd-place finish that cost him a spot in the driver point standings.

This weekend’s race at Chicago:

“I’m looking forward to Chicago. We had a really good run there earlier this year. We were running third with a lap to go and ran out of fuel. I know we’ll have a strong car. I think it’s one of my best tracks and it’s a great place to go after a frustrating Richmond race. I’ve got to study up on my fuel saving techniques so hopefully we won’t run out of gas. But I like the multiple grooves at Chicago where you can run the bottom and you can run the high side. It really suits my driving style. I tend to get into the corners pretty hard and then just really do everything to try to get the car to turn and then mash the gas. It just seems that track really suits that style.

“Additionally, the track is somewhat wore out so tires fall off so you have to manage the tires slightly. It’s not like an Atlanta or Richmond where you lose over a second over the course of a run. You definitely lose time on tires and you have to set your car up for the long run. I tend to be better at long runs than a short run. Looking at the lap time graphs I study every week I tend to give up time early in a run to guys like Kyle (Busch), my teammates and other guys that are fast early in a run. I just don’t have that right out of a gate speed. But for the rest of the run we are right there and eventually we are faster. That’s just how it works for me.

“I’ve always had good runs at Chicago so that gives me a level of confidence when we do race there. I feel like I’ve had really fast race cars so I know what I am looking for in regards to the feel of a race car when we are there.”

Event Preview Fact Sheet

Event / Date: Fast Five 225 – September 16, 2011

Venue: Chicagoland Speedway – Joliet, Ill.

· This Week’s Monster Energy Chevrolet Silverado … Ricky Carmichael will pilot chassis TMS-021 from the Turner Motorsports (TMS) NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) stable in Friday’s Fast Five 225 at Chicagoland Speedway. Built new for 2011, this is the same Monster Energy Chevy Carmichael sat on the pole with and raced to an eighth-place finish two weeks ago at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The same truck saw action earlier this season at Kentucky Speedway (St. 14, Fn. 16), Texas Motor Speedway (St. 9, Fn. 6), Charlotte Motor Speedway (St. 17, Fn. 12) and Michigan International Speedway (St. 7, Fn. 12).

· Monster Million … This weekend, Carmichael’s No. 4 machine will feature a special paint scheme highlighting the October 15 Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The Monster Energy Cup will showcase a unique hybrid track, designed by Carmichael and fellow motocross staple Jeremy McGrath, and will consist of supercross/motocross terrain and will have a tremendous motocross-style influence, making it unlike any other stadium race in the world. This track will be the perfect blend of supercross and motocross combined and created into the ultimate battleground. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check and, for the first time ever, $1 million will be paid to a rider that wins all three main events. Fans can register for a chance to win a Monster day with the 15-time AMA National champion during the weekend of Monster Energy Cup at the NCWTS race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

One lucky winner and a guest will enjoy an all-expenses paid trip to Las Vegas and spend the day as a VIP honorary pit crew member of Carmichael’s race team at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway followed by a VIP experience at the Monster Energy Cup at Sam Boyd Stadium, including premium seating, a track walk and a behind the scenes look at the live SPEED television broadcast. Carmichael, who will be joining SPEED host Ralph Sheheen and color commentator Jeff Emig on the broadcast, promises that this will be the ultimate fan experience. The winner will receive an autographed jersey from Carmichael and a gift bag from the Monster Energy Cup, including a year supply of Monster Energy drinks. Fans can register at the official website of the Monster Energy Cup: www.MonsterEnergyCup.com.

· RC in the Windy City … Carmichael has a pair of starts at Chicagoland and calls an 18th-place finish a career-best at the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval. Over those same two starts, the 31-year-old driver has logged a 13.0 average start, a 23.0 average finish, completed 234 of the 304 total laps run (77 percent) and earned just over $24,000 in purse money.

· Richmond Rewind … In four years of competing in the NASCAR arena, Carmichael didn’t have the chance to compete at Richmond International Raceway until last Friday night. While the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race proved to be a challenge for the 31-year-old driver, Carmichael came away from the race with laps under his belt and clearer understanding of the complexities presented by the tricky, .75-mile oval. He started 27th and finished 26th.

· A Look Back on Atlanta … Carmichael earned his first-career pole position in NCWTS competition, raced up front for a great majority of the Good Sam Club 200 and came away with a rock solid eighth-place finish in the division’s last stop at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

· In a Nutshell … The 2011 season marks Carmichael’s second year competing on a full-time basis and third year overall in the NCWTS. Since making his series debut 59 races ago, the father of twins has gone on to earn three top-five and 14 top-10 finishes. Over those same 59 races, the motocross legend has logged a 15.3 average start, a 17.2 average finish, led 39 laps, completed 91 percent of the laps run and earned just over of $754,000 in purse money.

· Turner Truck Totals … In 17 NCWTS races in 2011, TMS entries have earned 10 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes. James Buescher leads the way with 15 top 10s, including a 10th-place finish two weeks ago in Atlanta where he took over the points lead following his 13th-consecutive top 10 of the season. With the exception of Martinsville, Buescher has finished inside the top 10 in every race in which he has competed in the division this season. Carmichael has logged four top 10s, including a season-best sixth-place showing at Texas Motor Speedway and is 16th in the standings. Blake Feese finished fourth and Ryan Newman was fifth in Atlanta. Mark Martin finished seventh in the No. 32 machine at Pocono while Brad Sweet drove the same truck for the first eight races of the year and logged a pair of top 10s.

· Send in Steve … For the fifth time this season, Steve Arpin will climb aboard the No. 32 Mike’s Hard Lemonade machine for Friday night’s race in Chicago. Arpin drove the No. 32 entry earlier this year at Texas Motor Speedway (St. 4, Fn. 23), Kentucky Speedway (St. 13, Fn. 12), Iowa Speedway (St. 13, Fn. 13) and Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis (St. 19, Fn. 13). Following this weekend, Feese will fill out the remainder of the 2011 schedule in the seat of the third truck in the TMS stable.

· Get to the Point(s) … Carmichael picked up two spots and moved into 16th in the NCWTS driver point standings following his fourth top-10 finish of the season two weeks ago at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He’s now just two points outside the top 14 and 34 behind 12th-place Nelson Piquet Jr. Buescher assumed the points lead after his 10th-place showing in Atlanta and currently paces second-place Johnny Sauter by a handsome 12-point margin. While Arpin has made just four starts in 2011, the No. 32 machine is assured a spot on the starting grid by virtue of being 16th in the NCWTS owner point standings.

· Welcome Aboard … Turner Motorsports and Monster Energy are pleased to feature Thorntons on the lower-rear quarter panels of the No. 4 Monster Energy Silverado Friday night at Chicagoland. Thorntons Inc. is a leading, independent gasoline/convenience-chain retailer, marketing throughout the Midwest under the brand name Thorntons. Thorntons Inc. ranks No. 250 among Forbes magazine’s 500 largest privately held companies. Headquartered in Louisville, Ky., Thorntons operates over 160 gasoline and convenience stores including one travel plaza, eight car washes and ranks as one of Kentucky’s largest privately held companies with over $1.4 billion in annual revenue.

· Nationwide Notes … In 27 NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2011, TMS-fielded teams have notched three wins, 20 top-five and 53 top-10 finishes. Reed Sorenson, driver of the No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet, maintained third in points after finishing eighth last weekend in Richmond. Justin Allgaier, driver of the No. 31 Brandt Chevrolet, was ninth in the final rundown and held on to fifth in the standings. Jason Leffler was credited with 29th last Friday night but still held on to sixth in points. The drivers and teams of the NASCAR Nationwide Series also head to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend. The Dollar General 300 Presented by Coca-Cola will take the green flag Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The race will be televised live on ESPN2 beginning at 3 p.m. EDT and broadcast on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. Qualifying for Round 28 of the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship will be televised live on SPEED the same day beginning at noon EDT.

· See the Monster Energy Silverado … The Monster Energy Chevrolet Silverado show truck will make a pair of stops in the Chicago market this Friday. From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., the No. 4 machine will visit Thorntons Store No. 301 – 5900 South Harlem Avenue in Summit. Later that afternoon, Carmichael’s race truck will make a final pit stop at Thorntons Store No. 124 located at 15918 South Weber in Crest Hill.

· Up to Speed … Live coverage of the Fast Five 225 from Chicagoland Speedway will take the green flag Friday, Sept. 16 beginning at 7:30 p.m. EDT. The race will be televised live on SPEED and broadcast on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. Qualifying for the 18th of 25 races on the 2011 schedule will be televised live on SPEED the same day at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

What are your thoughts heading into Chicagoland this weekend?

“I’m really looking forward to it. We’ve had some good runs over the last several weeks and I expect that to carry over to Chicagoland this weekend. The mile-and-a-half race tracks are my favorite style of race track and that’s where our program has come the furthest. I’m ready to get back after it.”

You’re running a special paint scheme this weekend as well.

“This is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for two very lucky people, and I’m pumped to be part of it. The Monster Energy Cup is going to be an unbelievable event. Monster Energy and Feld Motor Sports continue to raise the bar with amazing ideas to energize the riders and the fan base. I can’t think of a better venue to hold such an incredible event than in Las Vegas. We’re rolling out the red carpet for two lucky people. Hopefully, we can kick the weekend off with a win in the No. 4 Monster Energy Chevrolet Silverado at Las Vegas Motor Speedway before we head over to Sam Boyd Stadium to watch the best riders in the world race for a million bucks! It’s going to be awesome to showcase that event on our Monster Energy Silverado this weekend in Chicago.”

The history of the Hoosier State speed plant literally smacks you in the face when one thinks of all the greats drivers of yesteryear who have raced there and those that have visited victory lane. For 19-year-old Chad Finley, his first ever appearance at Winchester was one he’d like to forget.

The Winchester 100 Presented by JEGS.com on August 20th proved costly to the entire Chad Finley Racing Team as an accident with JEGS / CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts points leader, Eddie Hoffman resulted in one of the most spectacular wrecks in the series’ brief history! After contact was made between the two on lap 67, Finley slammed the turn three wall, climbed up the fence before barrel-rolled down the track and completely destroying the car. He was ok after the horrific looking incident.

“There isn’t enough words that can describe how ticked off I am right now. There’s only two people driving those race cars off into that corner and only those two know exactly what happened. I guarantee you I had no part in causing that wreck!” A dejected Finley remarked. “We’re a very under-funded team and we can’t afford to do that. Eddie (Hoffman) knows what he did! You know what they say what goes around comes around.” Finley added.

“Our car is completely destroyed and the only thing to be thankful for is that I’m okay.” He continued. “I’m, honored from the ton of support we are getting from fans and people wanting to help us any way they can to get our car fixed. From donating money for repairs to wanting to come to the shop and help is pretty awesome. We have had some calls on people wanting to loan us cars as well until we get ours fixed which is very cool also. Will see what happens. Hopefully we can make it to Owosso with our car. Chas and entire Howe team are going to do their best. That’s a huge show for us, it’s the closest thing to a home track for us in the JEGS/CRA/GM series and we’ll figure out a way to somehow make it to that show.”

In the end, Finley was shown 16th in the run down and the accident proved costly in more ways than one. Going into the race, Finley was third in the points standings and after the accident, fell all the way down to sixth but only 13 points out of third as Brandon Watson, Josh Nelms, Brent Downey, and Finley are all lumped together (601-594-589-588). In addition and due to the carnage of the race at Winchester, the points spread is even closer behind Finley as Claude Plante Jr., and Rookie Cody Coughlin are on the heels of Finley (576-569). Just 32 points separate third through eighth.

The next race on the JEGS/CRA/GM schedule is on Saturday, September 3rd at Finley’s home track on the Salem, Indiana based schedule, Owosso Speedway in Ovid, Michigan as the Big “O” Classic 100 Presented by JEGS.com will highlight the Labor Day Holiday Weekend on the fast multi-grooved 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval in Central Michigan, just 20 minutes from Finley’s race shop.

Promotions.

As for the remainder of the 2011 racing season, the next scheduled start for Finley in the NASCAR Nationwide Series is on Saturday, September 17th at the 1.5 mile high-banked d-shaped paved oval of Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois in the running of the Dollar General 300 Presented by Coca-Cola. The race will be televised LIVE on ESPN2 at 3:30p.m. His #25 Team Rensi Motorsports Ford will have sponsorship decals from; Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Parts Stores & Certified Service Centers as well as the Airlift Company, Rain Eater Wiper Blades, and AutoParts2020.com.

· It’s official! Eddie Pardue joins Braun Racing… Veteran crew chief, Eddie Pardue, will call the shots for Leffler and the No. 38 team on a fulltime basis. Pardue comes to Braun Racing after spending the last ten years at Roush Racing where he moved quickly through the ranks, serving as crew chief since 2006 for the team’s Nationwide Series program.

· Chicagoland Speedway, by the numbers… In six NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Chicago, Leffler has logged one top-five and two top-10 finishes. His best performance at the 1.5-mile track occurred just last season when he drove to a fourth-place finish after starting 12th.

“Chicagoland is a fast track with multiple grooves so it’s pretty easy to pass. You can run the high groove or the bottom groove and move around as much or as little as you need to based on how the car is handling. Generally, you don’t see a lot of cautions during this race so don’t be surprised if it comes down to fuel mileage and pit strategy in the end.

The Great Clips team has grown stronger and stronger at these 1.5-mile tracks and with the addition of Eddie Pardue to the team, we feel pretty sure that we can go in this weekend and be a top contender for the win.”

Equipment Information

The No. 38 Great Clips team will hit the track with chassis #BR023 in this weekend’s Dollar General 300 Powered by Coca-Cola. This chassis last saw track time at Auto Club Speedway

You have never been to Gateway International Raceway. How have you prepared yourself for this weekend?

“I was in the shop two days this week working with all the guys. Brad (Parrott) has given me video of past races at Gateway so I have been studying those. David (Green) was in the shop Tuesday teaching me everything he could. He explained that Gateway is a non-traditional track with different banking and different shape in both turns; it’s more or less a speedway with a short-track feel. Just having knowledge of the track and knowing what to expect before I get out there will be beneficial. I will take it easy at the beginning of the practice on Friday and work my way up to 100 percent before we go full throttle. I know that no matter what I will have a great car and we will do our best to get a good starting spot and finish this weekend.”

The top-25 finish was the Raybestos Rookies sixth of the season.

Due to Townley’s efforts the Zaxby’s Racing team advanced one position from 35th to 34th in the season long championship point standings with 1,111 points; 286 points outside the top-30.

Threatening skies cleared out for the 49 cars attempting to make Friday night’s main event. Townley was the 40th car to take time and his quick lap of 31.035 seconds (173.997 mph) was good enough to lock the Watkinsville, GA native into the field with a 22nd place starting position.

Rolling off the starting grid on the outside of row 11, Townley raced comfortably inside the top-25 for the opening laps of the 300-mile event.

Long periods of green flag action came into play including a round of green flag pit stops. It wasn’t until lap 93 that the 43 car field was slowed down due to debris. The yellow and blue Zaxby’s Ford Fusion was scored in the 24th position two laps down.

John Wes Townley

A majority of the field hit pit road during the caution period but crew chief Brad Parrott made the call to leave the No. 09 machine out on the track. When racing resumed on lap 97 Townley was scored 21st only one lap down to race leader Kyle Busch.

With more than 63 laps on his tires and inside his fuel window Townley was forced to pit on lap 119 under green. Parrott rolled the dice once again and only called for two right side tires and fuel. The Zaxby’s Ford was down and away and sitting in the 27th position following the stop.

Green flag conditions continued for another 66 laps as the leaders began pitting on lap 150. Townley was up to the 22nd position but down on fuel by lap 180 and was going to be forced to pit again on lap 186 under green. However, at lap 185 the second and final caution flag of the evening was displayed for debris.

The gamble paid off and Townley was able to bring his No. 09 machine down pit road under caution for four fresh Goodyear tires and a splash of Sunoco fuel. When the field returned to green on lap 191 Townley was scored in the 21st position which is where he remained over the closing nine laps.

Joey Logano would go on to win his first race at Chicagoland Speedway and Busch, Vickers, Leffler, and Harvick would round out the top-5.

Next up for the Townley and the Zaxby’s Racing team is the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 at Gateway International Raceway beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET live on ESPN2.

Do you look at Chicagoland as a cookie-cutter race track or do you think it has its own personality?

“I think every track has its own personality and identity. When you think cookie cutter track you usually think of Chicago, Kansas or Las Vegas but all the mile-and-a-half tracks have their own characteristics. You may have the same set-ups but you don’t drive them the same. For example Chicago has a bump in the middle of turns one and two.”

“The good thing is I have experience qualifying at Chicago and with the entry list in the upwards of 50 cars, it will be very beneficial come Friday when we qualify.”

This Mecca of Motorsports produces high risk and high drama which was no different this Friday night for the Zaxby’s Racing team. John Wes Townley and RAB Racing were prepared for the fireworks that is NASCAR and that is exactly what they got.

After a promising start to the weekend including a solid starting position, John Wes Townley and the Zaxby’s Racing team lead their first lap of NNS competition on lap 13 but electrical problems on the No. 09 machine resulted in a 36th-place finish in the Subway Jalapeno 250 on Friday night.

During Friday afternoon’s time trial’s, Townley toured the historic two-and-a-half mile Daytona Beach tri-oval in 50.497 seconds (178.228 mph). The lap was good enough to lock the Zaxby’s Ford into the outside of the 11th row in the 22nd position for Friday night’s main event and NASCAR’s junior circuit.

The green flag waved over the 43-car field just past 8 p.m. as Townley dropped to the rear of the field due to no drafting practice on Thursday to get a feel for his No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford. The Raybestos Rookie contender ran as low as 39th during the opening laps and then slowly made his way up through the pack running as high as 25th before an electrical problem on lap 43 forced the yellow and blue Zaxby’s machine behind the wall for 18 laps.

The No. 09 machine returned to the track in the 41st position on lap 61; running consistent lap times as the top-10. Because the Zaxby’s Ford was so many laps down crew chief Brad Parrott opted to make this a good learning experience for the rookie. Townley focused on laps in the draft on the track and the Zaxby’s team worked on solid pit stops off the track.

John Wes Townley

Over the closing 25 laps of the 100-lap event 11 of the series competitors were taken out in two “big ones” and Townley, still laps down, sat back and watched the show; ultimately gaining 5 positions and finishing 36th, 21 laps down to race winner Clint Bowyer.

Townley and the No. 09 Zaxby’s team remain 35th in the 2009 Owner Point standings with 1011 points; 322 points outside the top-30.

Next up for John Wes Townley is the Dollar General 300 presented by Coca-Cola from Chicagoland Speedway. The 19-year-old rookie has one start at the 1.5-mile tri-oval in the 2008 Chicagoland ARCA 200. The 200-lap event is slated to begin at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
