“When I told Lydia I was taking her to Florida for our honeymoon I’m pretty sure she already knew there was a race day involved,” Smith laughed. “I’m lucky she’s as crazy about motorsports as I am.”
Even with the addition of the wedding plans, Smith says his team will be better prepared for Palm Beach than they were for the season opener earlier this month in Daytona. “We were still in the early stages of getting synched up with our new sponsor, ApplianceZone.com, and had our hands full getting the car, gear and crew ready,” he laughed. “It was total chaos and Murphy’s Law was all over us. Between wiring issues right before the start and then losing all but fourth gear, Daytona was a ‘bad day at the pool’.”
Now that it’s been de-bugged, Smith says he’ll run the Daytona car also at Palm Beach.
“We’ve run this car on a road course before so we know it can handle the right-hand/left-hand turning issue,” he said. “It’s not our first choice, but we don’t have a road course specific car. We have a lot of things going on at the shop right now and it’s best to run the Daytona car at West Palm Beach so we can finish our other cars in time for the April madness races.”
Jim Allen, CEO of ApplianceZone.com., the fourth largest online retailer of appliance parts and accessories, says that while he hopes the ApplianceZone.com. Racing team will be able to improve as the series moves forward, being there on race days with the car, crew, fans and family members is what counts. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I’d be able to so something like this one day,” he said. “Sponsoring Brad and the #26 car is more fun than I’ve ever had. It’s a lot of work –but worth every bit of it.”
