Peña qualified second and took the lead from pole winner Corey LaJoie on Lap 58.

From there, he quickly stretched out his lead and maintained that margin as the race remained green for the final 97 laps. Peña’s blistering pace left only the top 10 cars on the lead lap. He won by a margin of 4.633 seconds.

Brett Moffitt, who picked up the win in the season opener at Greenville, finished second and rookie Chase Elliott was third. Alex Bowman, the Sunoco Rookie of the Year leader, and overall points leader Max Gresham rounded out the top five.

Peña’s Revolution Racing teammate Darrell Wallace Jr. was sixth, followed by Dylan Presnell, Brandon Gdovic, Eddie MacDonald and Matt DiBenedetto.

The two previous wins for the 18-year-old Winchester, Va., driver came at his home state tracks of South Boston Speedway and Langley Speedway in Hampton. The pace of the race was slowed by just three cautions for 11 laps.

The Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 140 will air on SPEED on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. ET.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will run its second-to-last event of the season Friday, Sept. 23 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H.

Until last year, they’d remained shut out of victory lane. With their guitar trophy on display at the team headquarters, the No. 30 Germain.com Tundra has nothing more to do this weekend…than try to win again at the concrete oval in Tennessee.

“Nashville is a fun track and, yes, mile and a half tracks are definitely our forte even though we still like short tracks. We know we can go to a mile and a half and win the race. We need to get going and get caught up in points, so Nashville should be a great place for us to do that with the Germain.com Tundra,” explained Bodine.

The two-time Truck Series champion said that after the years of waiting for a Nashville victory, the return to the track after earning the coveted guitar trophy is still all about the business of winning again.

“I’ve always run well at Nashville and always loved going there, so it’s no different. I still want to win, that’s the reason we go to any race track,” said Bodine.

Winning might also be the reason he signs autographs at hockey games? During the off-weeks between Martinsville and Nashville, Bodine signed autographs at a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey game. At half time, he raced NASCAR driver Eddie MacDonald on beer coolers, and he won!

“I didn’t cheat! I just bump-drafted him and passed him,” smiled Bodine, who also installed a vinyl fence for his nephew in Florida during his downtime.

Bodine has competed in seven Truck Series events at Nashville and has scored six top-ten finishes, five top-five’s, two pole awards and one win. This Friday he’ll compete in his 170th Truck Series race when he fires up the Germain.com Tundra for the fourth race of the 2011 season. Bodine has 733 NASCAR career starts to date. After four races, Bodine ranks 8th in Truck Series standings, 28 points out of first place.

Watch Bodine in the No. 30 Germain.com Tundra on Friday, April 22nd, at Nashville Superspeedway. The action starts on SPEED with qualifying airing at 5:00 PM ET followed by racing at 8:00 PM—all on SPEED. Can’t get to a television? Tune your radio to your local MRN affiliate.

Speedway, but a flat tire in the middle of a green flag run left him with a disheartening 22nd-place
finish.

The 4/10-mile South Boston track once was on the schedule of the series now known as Sprint Cup, and NASCAR’s all-time win leader Richard Petty won there five times. Racing back in the day was typically very competitive, and Sunday’s South Boston 150 was no different as there was very tight racing throughout the field.

Inclement weather on Saturday cost teams much needed practice time, but Elliott and the crew of his No. 9 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet didn’t seem to need much time on the track to tune their car. During the only practice on Sunday afternoon, Elliott’s crew made only minor changes to the front end of the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet. Elliott said to crew chief Ricky Turner, “It’s just a little too tight in the center.” The No. 9 Chevy ended practice with the 12th fastest time of 88.468 miles per hour.

In qualifying, Elliott turned a lap at 89.569 mph, good enough for the ninth starting position, his first top-ten start in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

On the initial start Elliott fell back one spot to 10th where he settled into a rhythm to save his equipment for the end of the race. The first caution flag came out on Lap 15 for a car in the outside wall in Turn Four.

The green flag flew on Lap 22 with Elliott on the outside in 10th place, but he lost two spots on the restart after being squeezed up high on the outside and getting a piece of the turn two wall. Elliott quickly found an opening and ran in the 12th position, putting heavy pressure on the 11th-place car of Eddie MacDonald. Elliott ran MacDonald hard for 13 laps, but MacDonald kept Elliott behind him until the next yellow flag, on Lap 39. During the caution Elliott radioed to crew chief Ricky Turner and said, “It’s pretty neutral right here. I’m just trying to save my stuff.”

The green flag flew again on Lap 43. On the restart Elliott surged forward, driving the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet up to 10th just before another caution came out on Lap 48. The green flag flew again on Lap 54, starting a lengthy caution-free run where Elliott found himself riding contently in the 10th position.

However, at the halfway point of the race, on Lap 76, Elliott had a right-front tire go down in turns three and four and had to pit under the green flag, ruining any chances of another good run for his number 9 Chevrolet.

Elliott gingerly brought the car down pit road [pit entry was in turn two], and after bringing the car to the attention of his crew pitting in turns three and four returned to the track four laps down and out of contention for solid finish. Still, he raced hard, passing cars regularly, but often not for position as he was laps down.

During a caution period at Lap 91, Turner had Elliott bring the car down pit road to make sure the right-front tire wasn’t rubbing any suspension parts which would cause another flat. The green flag flew again on Lap 99, and the remainder of the race saw only two more cautions and one red flag at 10 laps to go.

The final restart waved with nine laps to go and Elliott found himself and Michael Cherry on the same lap so he knew who he was racing to the finish. On the final restart Elliott was well ahead of Cherry and stayed ahead of him to bring the HendrickCars.com Chevrolet home to a 22nd-place finish behind race winner Sergio Pena.

After the race Elliott pointed out that there were some positives to an otherwise disappointing weekend.

“I thought this weekend was a big improvement from Greenville-Pickens,” he said. “We just had some bad luck with the tire problem. “We still have work to do. We’re all still learning.” Elliott and his crew will return to the track on Thursday, April 28, at Richmond International Raceway for the Blue Ox 150.

“Racing at Richmond is going to be another milestone for the HendrickCars.com / Aaron’s Chevrolet team,” Elliott said. “I am really pumped about it.”

“Second Season in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Could Bring Big Results”

CENTER CONWAY, NH (January 19, 2011) – D.J. Shaw might have been a newcomer to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East ranks in 2010, but that didn’t stop him from some big accomplishments. Shaw was in the position to win during the tour’s stop at Lee USA Speedway (NH) before getting spun out, he led laps at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and he finished a solid sixth in the final point standings.

So you might think that Shaw is setting some loftier goals for the 2011 season with his #60 Julio and Rita Miglioli-owned race team. However, Shaw is wise beyond his teenaged years and is not getting caught up in the trap of defining his team’s success on whether or not they meet some arbitrary expectations.

“The goals for last year changed as we went along,” said Shaw. “We started out wanting to finish in the top ten and then we changed that goal to a top five finish – and we almost got there. We’ve come a long way and this year, I would like to win at least one race and get a solid top ten finish in the points. Maybe our goals will change during the season again. I just don’t want to get overconfident and make mistakes. We want to be competitive and finish where we run this year. If we can do that, the points will take care of themselves.”

In his second season, Shaw will return to many of the tracks that he had the opportunity to race on in 2010. There are also a number of new venues on the schedule that none of the series drivers have raced at before. Bowman Gray Stadium (NC), Richmond International Raceway (VA), Langley Speedway (VA) and Columbus Motor Speedway (OH) are all additions this year to the schedule.

“I’m excited about the schedule,” said Shaw. “It was a little disappointing to lose Lee because that was a home track for us, but I’m excited about going to Bowman Gray. That ought to be an interesting race. I think that the new tracks are a good thing for the series and there should be some great shows. Our marquee tracks are still Dover and New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but the short tracks are still the most fun. This schedule helps me with my development and also keeps to the series’ roots.”

The season will conclude on September 30th at Dover International Speedway (DE) and Shaw is already looking forward to that event.

“Racing at Dover was the most fun that I’ve ever had,” said Shaw. “I was worried about racing there all year long and then I loved it when I was there. So this year, I’ll be really looking forward to going there.”

Shaw will have a new car to try out for this season as well.

“We bought an Evernham Chassis down South at an auction very cheap. We’re going to try using a composite body with it. We’ve been busy locating used parts and trying to make something light out of this car. We’re trying something new and we’re willing to take a gamble on it. Only Eddie MacDonald has really tried to do this and we helped him with mounting his body.”

Because of the preparations involved with getting that new car ready, Shaw and his team have decided not to compete in the NASCAR All-Star Showdown at Irwindale later this month. Although the event is a prestigious one that Shaw wanted to run in, taking a trip to California was going to be too much for the team to undertake.

“We were going, but then we decided against it,” said Shaw. “Our new car wouldn’t be ready and to take the other car would also set us behind. We would have lost a few weeks worth of work when the truck was on the road.”

Shaw will however run some PASS Super Late Model races this coming season, when his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule allows. His mount for that type of racing is a car that he build along with his father in the shops of Dale Shaw Race Cars.

“We are going to try and run about eight to ten Super Late Model races in the North along with “The RACE” at North Wilkesboro,” said Shaw. “We just built our first straight rail car for ourselves and are trying to drum up some more Super Late Model business. If we run good with it, maybe we can sell some more cars.”

And until then, Shaw is keeping busy by working on his equipment, working at his father’s shop and doing a little bit of indoor kart racing in Northern New England.

“We’ll be kart racing until the season starts. That’s a lot of fun and it is going well. I won the last time out,” said Shaw.

For more information on D.J. Shaw, please be sure to stay tuned for the new DJShawRacing.com website that will make its debut soon.

(Sept. 24, 2010) – It was a pair of teenagers who conquered the “Monster Mile” like veterans Friday.

Eighteen-year-old Brett Moffitt picked up his second straight win at Dover International Speedway in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season finale Friday in the Sunoco 150. Ryan Truex, 18, clinched his back-to-back series championship simply by taking the green-flag and capped off his title run with a third-place finish.

Moffitt took advantage of a mechanical issue that sidelined his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Max Gresham on the first of two green-white-checkered attempts to inherit the lead, and then drove away from Corey LaJoie, 18, on the final restart to pick up his second win of the season and fourth of his career. Moffitt won at Dover last year driving for Andy Santerre Motorsports.

Ryan Truex (R), driver of the No. 00 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota Camry, and NASCAR president Mike Helton pose with the series championship trophy after the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Sunoco 150 at Dover International Speedway on September 24, 2010 in Dover, Delaware (Photo Credit: Nick Laham / Getty Images)

Truex, a development driver for Michael Waltrip Racing, put the championship out of reach with his win at New Hampshire last week. Unlike last season, when Truex was engaged in a tight points battle with Eddie MacDonald, he was able to drive Friday with the pressure off. After qualifying sixth, he ran near the front all race and recorded his eighth top five finish in 10 starts.

He also gave crew chief Mike Greci his fourth NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship. Greci won a pair of rings with driver Mike Stefanik in 1997 and ’98.

Gresham won the 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors Light earlier in the day. Despite occasional small puffs of smoke when he drove off the corners, he was able to run up front and lead a race-high 85 laps. He was leading the race on the first green-white-checkered attempt when the engine finally let go. The final caution for major smoke coming out from underneath the car handed the lead to Moffitt.

Eddie MacDonald and Dale Quarterley rounded out the top five.

IZOD IndyCar Series driver Danica Patrick finished sixth in her series debut. Brandon Ward, Sergio Pena, Kevin Swindell and D.J. Shaw completed the top 10.

The win, coupled with an early accident by Darrell Wallace Jr., allowed Moffitt to finish second in points — 134 behind Truex. Wallace ended up third in points, followed by Cole Whitt and MacDonald.

The Sunoco 150 will air on SPEED on Thursday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. ET.

(Sept. 16, 2010) – Brett Moffitt turned around his slow run from practice to run a record-lap in qualifying Thursday for Friday’s New Hampshire 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

It is the third career 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors Light for the second-year NASCAR K&N Pro Series East driver from Grimes, Iowa. Moffitt’s lap of 29.863 seconds (127.542 mph) broke the track record set in 2002 by Brian Hoar of 29.893 (127.414). He also captured the pole in the series’ June race at New Hampshire.

Moffitt went out 26th out of 32 cars and knocked Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Max Gresham off the provisional pole. Gresham, who put down a lap of 29.945 (127.193), will start on the outside of the front row. Kevin Swindell qualified third at 29.954 (127.155). Swindell had won the Coors Light Pole Award in the previous two races: at Lee (N.H.) USA Speedway and Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga.

Eddie MacDonald and points leader Ryan Truex rounded out the top five qualifies. Truex enters Friday’s race, the second-to-last of the season, with a 66-point lead over Darrell Wallace Jr. as he goes for a second straight NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship. Wallace qualified eighth.

Cole Whitt was sixth fastest in qualifying, followed by Ryan Gifford, Wallace, Corey LaJoie, and Alan Tardiff.

The New Hampshire 125 is scheduled to take the green flag at 5 p.m.

Having come up through the field on two occasions, Moffitt was sitting in a position that would have let him contend for the win in the closing laps, until he was involved in another racer’s accident. Although he did not earn the finish he deserved, he had yet another strong performance to go along with his impressive season.

“I really liked the track,” Moffitt said. “It has tons of grip and is really fast, so it was a blast to race here.”

After a successful test session, the entire #20 JGR Game Plan for Life Toyota team unloaded fast off of the truck, recording the fourth fastest time in the first practice session.

Moffitt qualified a conservative fourteenth for the race, having the car set up for the cooler temperatures for the night race. “The car was loose during qualifying, but we were hoping for it to tighten up after the sun went down during the race,” Moffitt said.

On a track where it is tough to pass, Moffitt took off from the start; cracking the top ten by lap eight. Moffitt then made a daring three wide pass on lap 12 to take the seventh position.

Later in the race on lap 55, Moffitt reported the car as “wrecking loose” and decided to make a pit stop under caution to tighten it up. The crew noticed that the right rear tire was coming apart. NASCAR officials approved a tire change, but this forced Moffitt to restart near the end of the field.

“The car was so loose that I thought I was going to wreck in every turn,” Moffitt said. “Once we changed the tire, the car handled so much better that we were able to run back up through the field.”

By the time the field was stopped on lap 91 for cleanup from an accident, Moffitt had moved up through the field and was back in the top ten.

On lap 132, Moffitt was running inside the top five when Eddie MacDonald spun in front of him. As Moffitt was trying to avoid the spinning car, MacDonald clipped him, sending him head-on into the wall. Moffitt’s and the #20 team’s night was over.

“That was definitely one of the hardest hits I’ve ever taken,” Moffitt said. “It was just a tough night. We were sitting in a good spot with twenty to go, and I really thought we had something for the leaders. It’s disappointing to lose it all at the end.”

Moffitt moved back to fourth in the point standings, but is only two points behind Cole Whitt, who is in third.

The season’s next stop is September 17, at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “I am excited to return to NHMS,” Moffitt said. “We got the pole in June and have always run well there, so it should be a good race for us.”

Officials from Brett Moffitt Racing are excited to announce the launch of the new website, www.brettmoffittracing.com. Although, it is still being finalized, the goal is to make it much more interactive and to provide fans with a more personal, behind the scenes look.

(Photo by Kevin C. Cox / Getty Images for NASCAR)

JEFFERSON, Ga. (Aug. 28, 2010) – Ty Dillon captured his first win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East with a victory in the American Fence Association 150 presented by Mayfield Ice Creamier at Gresham Motorsports Park on Saturday.

Dillon, the 18-year-old grandson of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car owner Richard Childress, inherited the top spot when the two leaders got together late in the event and then held on to win the action-filled race that concluded with a yellow-checkered finish.

Fellow series rookie Kevin Swindell won the Coors Light Pole Award and led a career- and race-high 123 laps in the series’ inaugural visit to the Jefferson, Ga., half-mile. Defending series champion Ryan Truex got by Swindell on a Lap 130 restart and then two came together on the backstretch following a restart on Lap 137 that saw Dillon inherit a lead he would make stand up through two more cautions.

Truex and Swindell had further on-track incidents in the closing laps, and it was Swindell who brought out the 12th and final caution of the night when he stalled entering Turn 2 during the green-white-checker finish. Truex wound up seventh while Swindell slipped to 14th.

When the dust had settled, Cole Whitt registered his third runner-up finish of the year while Ryan Gifford crossed a season-best third.

Michael Cherry, Matt Kobyluck, Sergio Pena, Truex, Jason Patison, D.J. Shaw and Brandon Haley rounded out the top 10 finishers.

It was an impressive debut for Cherry, who competed with Swindell for the lead early on in the race. It was also an impressive comeback for Kobyluck, who cut a tire in final practice and was forced to a back-up car. After starting the race at the tail end, Kobyluck rallied for his fourth top-10 of the season.

Darrell Wallace Jr., who entered the race 33 points behind Truex atop the season standings, finished two laps down in 15th following the fracas on Lap 137. Consequently, the deficit doubled to 66 points with two races remaining on the schedule.

It was also a costly night for Brett Moffitt, who entered the race 100 points behind Truex. He was working on a top-five, but tangled with Eddie MacDonald on 132 and finished 17th. As a result he slipped to fourth in the standings behind Whitt.

While the entire race was tightly-contested on the fast half-mile, the last 60 laps of the event were slowed by four red flags and multiple cautions. The first red was brought out on Lap 91 when Julian Albarracin’s car slid into two water barrels along the track entrance atop Turn 2 that soaked the entire racing surface coming out of the turn. Two red flags and 28 laps of caution were used in an effort to dry the surface. The third and fourth red flags were necessary for fluid clean-up on the frontstretch during accidents on Laps 120 and 132. All told, the race included 12 cautions for 70 laps.

With his win in the No. 3 Waffle House / Mom ‘N’ Pop’s Chevrolet, Dillon secured a spot in the prestigious postseason NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. He came into the event with five top 10s in eight career NKNPS East starts. His best career finish of second came at Iowa Speedway in the East/West combination race where he also led the first laps of his career. Dillon’s brother, Austin, was the 2008 K&N Pro Series East Sunoco Rookie of the Year.

The American Fence Association 150 from Gresham Motorsports Park will air on SPEED on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 6 p.m. ET.

The next event on tap for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will be the New Hampshire 125 at New Hampshire Motors Speedway on Friday, Sept. 17. The event, the next-to-last race of the 2010 season, marks the second of two appearances for the series at the 1.058-mile oval in Loudon, N.H.

Moffitt qualified eighth and finished a hard-fought third in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series 125 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, NH. The race was the first time the Grimes, Iowa, native took to the short-track in southern New Hampshire.

“Lee was definitely an interesting place,” Moffitt said. “The pavement was pretty well worn-in, which made for very little grip.”

After initial motor troubles forced Moffitt to miss a majority of the first practice session, Moffitt’s crew was able to make the adjustments needed, earning him the ninth fastest time in the second practice session.

Moffitt backed up his practice speeds by qualifying eighth fastest for the drop of the green flag.

The leaders spun on lap 54, forcing Moffitt to avoid getting caught up in the accident. He escaped with only minor right front damage, but the result was a slight fender rub. Spotters reported smoke from the tire, and after checking it as best as they could from the pits and the spotter’s tower, they made a judgment call that the tire would probably go the distance and did not bring Moffitt into the pits.

“We were pretty worried about the fender rubbing, because it was enough to produce some tire smoke from that point on, and the smoke was really noticeable under cautions,” Moffitt said.

In the closing laps, Moffitt battled closely with Ryan Truex and Cole Whitt for third position. Moffitt found himself in fourth position after a red flag delay following a later accident, and with only nine laps remaining, Moffitt was able to slip underneath Eddie MacDonald coming out of the final turn on the last lap to finish third.

“We got pretty much everything out of this car,” Moffitt said. “We struggled off the truck, but Bryant and everyone did an awesome job getting us up to speed. We were fortunate early on to get through the wreck without major damage, and we learned that our concern about the right front tire had been well justified. Some of the rubber had melted, and the cords were visible after the race, but the tire went the distance, and they made the right call.”

Moffitt’s finish solidifies him in third place in the year-end Championship standings, 100 points behind the leader, Truex, with three events remaining.

“It’s disappointing that we weren’t able to make up any points on the leader,” Moffitt said. “However, I feel confident about the remainder of the season and believe we can still make up the ground. We were very fast when we tested at Gresham, I enjoy Loudon, and we won at Dover last year, so nothing is even close to over yet.”

Officials from Brett Moffitt Racing are excited to announce the sale of Brett Moffitt’s Joe Gibb Racing t-shirts. All sizes are available and quantities are limited. USA Speedway. Elsa Garrison / Getty Images for NASCAR

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug 1, 2010) – Darrell Wallace Jr. made a three-wide pass for the lead with two laps to go and held on for the victory Friday in the K&N Pro Series 125 at Lee USA Speedway. It was the second NASCAR K&N Pro Series East win of the season for the 16-year-old Revolution Racing driver from Mobile, Ala.

“It definitely hit us right away this time,” said Wallace. “I’m excited, the whole team is excited. I was talking to the crew under the red flag and I told them [the leaders] are going to wash it up and I’m going to go under them and take the win and that’s exactly what happened.”

Wallace started behind Ryan Truex and Eddie MacDonald on the race’s final restart. Truex and MacDonald had swapped the lead four times over the previous 35 laps, and appeared setting up for a final dash to the checkers for the win. But it was Wallace who had drove up through the field after getting tangled up in an early race incident and wound up stealing the spotlight. He dove inside the side-by-side leaders going into Turn 3, and emerged with the lead coming out of Turn 4 for his second win of the season.

Wallace became the youngest driver and first African American race winner in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East history when he won the season opener at Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway in March.

Wallace, second in points, closed the gap on defending series champion Truex to 33 points with three races remaining.

Marc Davis returned to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East this weekend for the first time since 2008. He finished eighth at Lee USA Speedway in the No. 8 Revolution Racing Chevrolet.

“I was really appreciative of Max Siegel and everybody at Revolution for putting me in the car this week,” said Davis, who is eyeing a return to the Nationwide Series at Dover in September. “These guys needed a good run. They’ve struggled the past couple weeks. Just had a bunch of bad luck. So they put me in the car for this one race, and we came away with a solid top ten.”

Sergio Pena carried a special paint-scheme this weekend, promoting the upcoming docu-reality series “Changing Lanes,” which premieres on BET Network September 1. Pena drove the No. 4 Changing Lanes Chevrolet to a 15th-place finish at Lee USA Speedway Friday night, despite damage from a mid-race incident. Pena is currently 12th in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East standings.

Ryan Gifford saw his night come to an early end at Lee USA Speedway after getting caught up in multiple on-track incidents. The final blow to the No. 2 Revolution Racing Chevrolet came at lap 116 when front end damage sent the No. 2 machine to the garage. Gifford was credited with a 19th-place finish. He slips to eighth in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series standings, but is just 26 points out of fifth-place.

The K&N Pro Series 125 will air on SPEED on Thursday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. ET.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will return to the track on Saturday, Aug. 28 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga.

Lee, N.H. (July 31, 2010): DJ Shaw was well on his way to a top-three finish at Lee USA Speedway in Friday night’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series East 125. But a spin on lap 89 took the 20-year-old driver out of contention and the JLM Precision race team had to settle with a 12th place finish.

“I got wrecked,” said a dejected Shaw. “We probably had the second place car. It was a bad day for me. I hadn’t even started going yet. I felt like I could have passed Eddie (MacDonald) at any time on a long run, and if Ryan (Truex) had been patient he probably would have won that race.”

Shaw started the race from the fifth position after a strong qualifying effort earlier in the day. The qualifying run was on par with Shaw’s goals for the event.

“I was hoping for a top-five because I thought we had a good car for the long run, and that would set us up pretty good.”

Shaw maintained his position in the top-five for the first 50 laps of the race, but really started to come up through following a lap 53 restart. Shaw moved into second for a restart on lap 60 and immediately began challenging MacDonald on the inside.

“I was just riding and Eddie was really, really stopping in the middle to hold the lead there. Ryan was equally as good as me or probably a little better.”

Crossing the start/finish line to begin lap 89, MacDonald, Shaw and Truex were nose-to-tail. Coming around turn two, Truex got into Shaw and the No. 60 JLM Precision Chevrolet went right around. The incident relegated Shaw back to the 20th position for the restart at lap 93.

“He wasn’t patient. It was frustrating because it doesn’t fix my day that he (Truex) is sorry,” said Shaw.

Shaw was just as strong coming from the back. He made his way up to 12th, but ran out of time to break back into the top-10 before the checkers fell.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East 125 will air on SPEED on Thursday, August 5 at 6 p.m. ET. Shaw and the JLM Precision race team return to action on Saturday, August 28 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Georgia.

USA Speedway. Elsa Garrison / Getty Images for NASCAR

LEE, N.H. (July 30, 2010) – Darrell Wallace Jr. made a three-wide pass for the lead with two laps to go and held on for the victory Friday in the K&N Pro Series 125 at Lee USA Speedway.

He dove inside the side-by-side leaders going into Turn 3, and emerged with the lead coming out of Turn 4.

It was the second NASCAR K&N Pro Series East win of the season for the 16-year-old Revolution Racing driver from Mobile, Ala. Wallace won the season opener in March at Greenville (S.C.) Pickens Speedway. That victory had made the member of the Drive for Diversity initiative the youngest winner in series history.

Wallace, second in points, closed the gap on defending series champion Truex to 33 with three races remaining.

On a night when the track held a reunion for those involved in the series’ New England roots, it was a top three finish for three teenagers who showcased the evolution of the series: Wallace was followed across the line by 18-year-old Truex from New Jersey and 17-year-old Brett Moffitt of Iowa.

MacDonald ended up fourth. The Rowley, Mass., driver seemed poised to win at his home track, where he made his series debut in 2001. He led five times for a race-high 65 laps only to get shuffled out of the lead in the final laps.

Cole Whitt finished fifth. Andrew Smith, Matt Kobyluck, Marc Davis, Kevin Swindell and Jorge Arteaga rounded out the top 10. Earlier in the day, Swindell won his first career Coors Light Pole Award, but was spun on a Lap 54 restart while battling MacDonald for the lead. Wallace, who was running third at the time, was among the cars that were involved in the pileup.

The K&N Pro Series 125 will air on SPEED on Thursday, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. ET.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will return to the track on Saturday, Aug. 28 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga..

A victim of several incidents – the last one coming on the final lap – Gresham and his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Toyota Camry limped to a 16th-place finish in the motorized slugfest.

“It was just crazy out there, real crazy,” Gresham stated after the race. “Guys were just driving out of their minds.”

Gresham’s struggles started early Friday turning in just the 22nd-fastest time out of 24 cars in the final practice session. In qualifying, it was a different story as the 17-year-old Griffin, GA driver grabbed the third spot on the race grid with a lap of 15.591 seconds (86.588 miles per hour average).

Gresham’s qualifying lap was nearly a full second faster than he had practiced in the final session.

At the drop of the green flag, Gresham settled into the third spot behind leaders Kevin Swindell and Eddie MacDonald and stayed there through the first caution flag of the race on Lap 33. All wasn’t well with Gresham’s Toyota, however, as his car had developed a handling problem in the corners. That caused the Woodward Academy senior student to fall back in the field to seventh before the second yellow flag of the race waived on Lap 47.

Max Gresham

Gresham then saw his chances of winning a third NASCAR K&N Pro Series race this season dashed on the restart when he managed to drive through a wreck involving four of the leaders in front of him. Unfortunately, NASCAR officials deemed Gresham to be part of the incident and put him to the tail end of the field on the ensuing restart on Lap 61.

Now in 17th- place and mired back in the pack, Gresham had trouble trying to break free of the congestion on the tight .375-mile Lee USA Speedway oval. Additional caution flags on Laps 74 and 88 also made it tough to gain spots as the race quickly wound down to its conclusion.

Over the final 30 circuits, Gresham did his best to move up in the field. Another wreck – this one on Lap 108 – involved several of the leaders as they battled through Turn 2. That allowed Gresham to slide back into the 10th position with just over 15 laps remaining.

Yet another fender bender – this one a six-car tangle – brought the race to a halt with a red flag on Lap 116. When the race finally went back to green-flag conditions after a 17-minute delay, Gresham saw any chances of salvaging a good finish get crushed when he got spun out coming off of Turn 4 on the final lap.

“The car is pretty messed up,” said Gresham. “We battled really hard to get a good finish and I think we were going to finish sixth. Then I get dumped coming to the checkered flag. It was a totally frustrating race, but I just have to put it behind me.”

Next up for Max Gresham will be his fourth career ARCA start – this one coming in the Berlin ARCA 200 at Berlin Speedway in Marne, MI on Sunday, August 8. The last time Gresham competed in an ARCA race, he wheeled his No. 71 Gresham Motorsports Toyota to a win in the Tim Richmond Memorial 200 at Mansfield (OH) Speedway on July 17.

Gresham’s next NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race will be at Gresham Motorsports Park on Saturday, August 28. The event at his family-owned track will mark the first time NASCAR has visited the Jefferson, GA half-mile oval since 1987.

two weeks ago, Andrew Ranger returned to Victory Lane on a road course, this time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Lime Rock Park.

Race leader Cole Whitt ran off the course after contact with Ranger on Lap 52 of the 66-circuit event. Ranger assumed the lead and gradually drove away, beating Whitt to the checkered flag by 5.899 seconds.

Teammates Max Gresham and Brett Moffitt finished third and fourth, respectively. Points leader Ryan Truex finished fifth. He led eight laps before sliding off the course and through the dirt in Turn 1 on a Lap 45 restart and lost 11 spots. He worked his way back through the field but ran out of time as the race didn’t have another yellow flag.

Darrell Wallace Jr. was sixth, followed by Eddie MacDonald, Jeff Anton, Miguel Paludo and Sergio Pena.

Gresham, a 17-year-old Woodward Academy (College Park, GA) senior student, started his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota 11th and immediately worked his way up to seventh in the first five laps of the race.

JGR crew chief Mike Sibley then pulled the trigger on a strategic move bringing Gresham to pit road for fuel under green flag conditions on Lap 6. The ‘short pit’ move put Gresham back in the pack, but now he could go the distance without having to come in for service later in the race.

Gresham continued to do his part on the race track wheeling his way back up to 10th when the caution flew on Lap 28 for debris in the chicane portion of the track. Back under green two laps later, Gresham surged to seventh before another yellow flag period slowed the race on the 35th circuit.

Not to be denied, Gresham showed the skill of a veteran road racer moving his way through traffic and missing a spin in front of him sliding into third place with just 15 laps remaining.

Along with his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Brett Moffitt, Gresham tried to run down the leaders on the 1.53-mile twisting layout but ran out of laps to finish third behind winner Andrew Ranger and runner-up Cole Whitt.

Moffitt, Ryan Truex, Darrell Wallace, Jr., Eddie MacDonald, Jeff Anton, Miguel Paludo and Sergio Pena completed the Top-10 finishers.

Gresham will return to Iowa Speedway next Saturday, July 10, for his second career ARCA race. In June, Gresham wheeled his JGR Toyota to a win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East win at the Newton, IA track.
