Extenze, sponsor of Sprint Cup Series rookie of the year Kevin Conway, is once again being called out for playing dirty in the arena of NASCAR sponsorship — this time by Robby Gordon Motorsports. According to a story that broke on celebrity gossip site TMZ.com, Gordon has filed a lawsuit against Extenze, because according to him, the company refuses to pay for its sponsorship. Extenze, on the other hand, contends Gordon committed a breach of contract, because in some races, Gordon was in the car instead of Conway, the driver Extenze wanted in the car.

According to a statement made by Gordon in L.A. County Superior Court, Extenze initially agreed to Gordon driving the car in some races. He went on to claim that Extenze then did an about-face and refused to pay him for certain races, because Conway wasn’t in the race car. - Full Story by Amanda Vincent

ExtenZe Local Hero Program Celebrates Those Who Go to
Great Lengths to Make a Difference in Their Communities

ExtenZe Racing

STATESVILLE, NC (May 4, 2010) – Back in January at the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce annual awards banquet, a local chiropractor and philanthropist by the name of Dr. David Eads was honored as 2009 Citizen of the Year in recognition of his outstanding community service. For that, Eads has been named an ‘ExtenZe Local Hero’ and will serve as Honorary Crew Chief for the leading NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year driver Kevin Conway and his ExtenZe Racing team at the upcoming Darlington Raceway NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend.

A native of Charleston, Eads moved to Darlington in 1976 when his father became principal of St. Johns High School and since then has become very familiar with Darlington’s generosity and its needs over the years. Despite being born elsewhere Eads says there’s nowhere else he’d rather live and work. Eads career path was mapped out fairly early in his childhood as grew up best friends with the son of a prominent local chiropractor by the name of Dr. Joe Willis and spent a lot of time at the chiropractic office following in the footsteps of his friend’s dad observing him with his patients.

After graduating from Clemson, Eads joined Dr. Willis’ practice in Darlington and then bought the practice when Willis retired. Now entering his 21st year of straightening of the aches and pains of friends and neighbors, Eads says the spinal care business has remained healthy but it’s his love of community service that keeps him going.

Eads interest in community service evolved organically stemming from involvement with youth recreational sports leagues through his children. Over 12 years of coaching rec league basketball and baseball, participating in various PTO’s, boards, and school related activities, Eads has become familiar with hundreds of local kids and the challenges their families face. He has also served on the Greater Darlington Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and during his time as chairman he urged more participation with local charities like The Lord Cares food bank, and he founded the annual Thanksgiving Turkey giveaway on the Darlington Square.

Beyond his plan to keep the turkey giveaway going for as long as he can, Eads says he would love to see more youth oriented programs established especially those which provide mentoring and a safe place for kids to hang out.

“When I heard that Dr. David Eads was recently named the 2009 Citizen of the Year in Darlington it was a no brainer for me to want to honor him as our ExtenZe Local Hero,” said Kevin Conway, driver of the No. 37 ExtenZe Racing Ford Fusion and leading Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate. “When we put our Local Hero program together before the season began it was the likes of Dr. Eads that we had in mind that would make this program successful. We’re honored to be giving him a behind-the-scenes look at a NASCAR Sprint Cup team in action and appreciate his support at Darlington Raceway and can’t thank him enough for all that he does for the Darlington community.”

The ‘ExtenZe Local Hero’ program pays tribute to people who have gone to great lengths to make a difference. Those selected have faced danger, sacrificed their own safety for others or in some way displayed leadership that changed their community for the better. Award recipients become ExtenZe Racing Honorary Crew Chiefs, receive a tour of the paddock, attend the pre-race NASCAR Driver/Crew Chief meeting, and sit atop the pit box with Crew Chief Peter Sospenzo to root on rookie driver Kevin Conway piloting the royal blue and red No. 37 ExtenZe Ford Fusion. Each recipient also receives a $1,000 award from ExtenZe, the world’s best selling male enhancement product, in recognition of their selflessness.

(November 5, 2009) – Kevin Conway and ExtenZe Racing announced today that they will attempt to run all three NASCAR national series races – NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series (# 26 ExtenZe Chevrolet) and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (# 71 ExtenZe Chevrolet) – at Phoenix International Raceway next weekend. The NASCAR Nationwide and Sprint Cup cars will be available for photos on Saturday, November 7th at 7:45 a.m. CST on the frontstretch at Texas Motor Speedway.

Conway has never raced at Phoenix International Raceway, much less competed in NASCAR’s top three divisions in one weekend, but he is set to attempt to qualify for his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series debut at the one-mile oval. No driver in NASCAR history has ever attempted this feat.

“I’ve never been accused of doing things normally,” said Conway. “To make my Sprint Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series debut at a track that I have never even seen is pretty ambitious but I am excited to have this opportunity with ExtenZe. For ExtenZe Racing to pull this together in such a short amount of time is nothing short of a miracle. Everyone on this ExtenZe team is pumped to give it our best shot in Phoenix.”

ExtenZe will appear as Conway’s primary sponsor in all three races. Together they will attempt to compete in 850 miles of racing at Phoenix International Raceway.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Lucas Oil 150 will be televised live on Friday, Nov. 13 beginning at 7:30 p.m. EST on SPEED. The NASCAR Nationwide Series Able Body Labor 200 will follow on Saturday, Nov. 14 on ESPN2 at 4:00 EST with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rounding up the weekend with Sunday’s Checker O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 presented by Pennzoil on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 2:30 p.m. EST on ABC.

About Kevin Conway

He’s been behind the wheel of various race cars in last few years in his quest to land a quality ride with just the right team and sponsor. You have also seen him this season in quite a few different commercials for his primary sponsor Extenze. Earlier this month the announcement was made that Kevin will begin the latest, and most exciting part of his career on October 3rd when he climbs into the #26 Extenze Chevy at Kansas Speedway.

Kevin holds a marketing degree and one thing that has always confused me as far as Kevin’s racing career goes, is the fact that team owners and sponsors alike didn’t seem to realize the dollar value to this talented and good looking driver, who has been instrumental in bringing several companies into the NASCAR racing realm.

Apparently, the exact opposite is the case in this venture and since Kevin always keeps us informed and has been one of our favorites here at CF, I decided to give him a call and get the whole story directly from Kevin himself.

“Obviously in the current economic climate right now there are a lot opportunities for companies to step in to this sport and get connected with great, great teams at a fraction of what it would have cost just a few years ago,” began Conway. “We were evaluating all of our options, first and foremost from a driving standpoint, wondering where we were going to be able to build something for the long term and be able to have a really solid opportunity. It has been really exciting to see the whole attitude and structure of the team that Rob Fuller has put together. Rob has been in Cup racing for a long, long time and has seen all sides of it. Now he is entering the next chapter of his career as an owner along with Robert Richardson, Sr. and Jr. It’s just been really cool and sort of a throw back to what the Nationwide Series is all about. It is a small team but they’ve got some awesome affiliations with 2 different Cup organizations that help us from a technology standpoint to keep us up to speed there and they build really, really good cars.”

“Also the majority of the guys that work on the team are all DEI guys. We joke around and say they’re putting the old band back together, but, the majority are the guys from when Jr. was driving the #8 car. It is cool to see the way they put together this whole organization because it is a small team but it’s a small team with great people. There are so many people out of work from DEI and that created a really good opportunity for us.”

“Rob and Robert are growing their organization by adding our team as a second team with Jefferson Hodges as my Crew Chief. Dale Earnhardt,Jr. actually brought Jefferson to North Carolina from Virginia to start JR Motorsports when they first started running the late model program. Jefferson worked for a company called Townsend Race Cars in Virginia who builds probably 80% of all the late models on the East coast. They took that team all the way to Hooters with driver Mark McFarland. who is now my Car Chief. It’s literally all the JR gang! I think our team may be one of the only Nationwide and or Cup teams where the Crew Chief, Car Chief and Driver are all from Virginia. We’re all from within an hour of each other and we all cut our teeth racing on the short tracks of Virginia. Our truck driver, Wahoo (real name Charles Samson), is from DEI and he used to be the Center for the San Diego Chargers.”

Kevin assures me there are many exciting things in the works and he couldn’t be happier to be a part of something he feels is going to be outright successful and long term. It is great to hear the excitement in his voice. I’m not sure he could mask that even if he wanted to. And truthfully there is no reason why he would. This opportunity is exactly what he has always said he was working and racing for.

Conway knows that some people have made judgements about him as a racer and about his on track performance, but, all of the part time deals he has gone through have made this opportunity all the sweeter. He is more than ready to silence his critics. “In some ways Extenze is a seemingly controversial sponsor,” continued Kevin, “but, man what a great, great sponsor! They are one of the most fun companies I have ever been a part of. They are nothing less than first class in everything they do. They want to do things very, very professionally and make sure things are done right. It’s been awesome to have the opportunity to work with them. We’ve shot an entirely new series of commercials that are airing now. We have a massive, massive media program wrapped around the race program. There is no other sponsor in the Nationwide Series that activates anywhere close to the level they do and they have just launched the Extenze For Women product. When they launched that product 660 Walmarts sold out.”

“They also make Alteril which is an all natural sleep aid. That works awesome! It is made of Melatonin, L-Tryptophan and Valerian Root. It’s a great product that really works and I take it a lot just because when you’re traveling in different time zones it helps a lot. It’s been great to see my family, my friends and even my attorney swear by these products. It has just been fun for me to get Extenze involved with NASCAR and we’re going to have a full merchandising program at the track beginning at Fontana. This has been a great, great partnership and I am looking forward to this multi-year deal. It’s very exciting! We just have some very, very talented people working on both teams, especially as the Nationwide Series transitions to the COT next year. It’s a little bit like old school racing. All the guys that are working in the shop are the ones that are going to the track on the weekends and going over the wall. It’s great.”

I know it is, Kevin!

Conway assures me there are a lot of other exciting things in the works for this team for 2010. I certainly tried to pry some info about this from him but he absolutely wouldn’t budge. I will say this, however, the more he talked about this team, the owners, his sponsor, and his future, the more interested and excited I became for him.

I have interviewed or worked with a lot of young drivers over the years, and right or wrong, many of them have not been able to land the sponsorship to make their racing dream come true. They were talented and deserving, but, it just didn’t happen. Sadly, the heartbreak of this reality is as much a part of racing as the competition in many instances. Thank God Kevin was able to see his dream become a reality. From what I hear, this team is going to be awesome. I am expecting to see great things from them soon and often. Kevin Conway has earned this chance!

Be sure to follow the latest in Kevin’s news on facebook.com by becoming a fan of Extenze Racing. He appears to have quite a fan base there and I am actually one of them!

Good luck, Kevin. You know we will be watching

In fact, Conway has to watch what he says in public, simply because the sponsor is ExtenZe, a male enhancement product.

“The puns are endless,” Conway said. “We find ourselves all the time laughing and trying so hard not to accidentally say the wrong thing because it can come out all wrong.”

Conway has a five-race deal with ExtenZe and Alteril, a sleep aid, and Saturday’s Meijer 300 is the third of that sponsorship. Conway approached Nemco owner Joe Nemechek about the sponsorship, and since Nemechek is trying to get his Sprint Cup team running better, the timing couldn’t have been better.

“It was really kind of a last-minute deal,” Conway said at Kentucky Speedway. “Joe’s been a fixture in the Nationwide Series for a long time with the 87. This year, with them not having any sponsorship and him trying to get the Cup deal going, it just kind of worked out for us to all work together.”
