No. 00 Armed Forces Foundation Toyota

Iowa Speedway

CORNELIUS, N.C. — Michael Waltrip Racing developmental driver Ryan Truex heads to Iowa Speedway this weekend for the fourth annual NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination race. This event marks the only race in which competitors from the East and West series go head-to-head with championship points on the line. This year’s race is the third race of the season for both series.

After starting the season with a 14th-place finish at Greenville, defending K&N Pro Series East Champion Truex bounced back to finish third at South Boston moving him to fourth in points. The three East-West combination races at Iowa have produced three different race winners. Truex hopes to be the fourth this weekend in the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200.

QUOTES

ON HAVING SUCH A LONG BREAK BETWEEN EVENTS: “I hate it, to be honest. We had back-to-back events in April and I just started to feel like the team and I were getting into a groove. Plus, we had a strong run at South Boston (finished third) so I definitely didn’t want to take a break.”

ON THE RACE BEING A COMBINATION EVENT: “It definitely elevates the competition level. There are a lot of good racers in the West division. We don’t get to compete against them much so this gives us a chance to see where we stack up against those guys.”

ON IOWA SPEEDWAY: “I love racing there. Last year was my first year there and I got a feel for the place pretty quickly. It’s definitely one of the nicer tracks on the circuit. It’s fast and wide so you’ve got plenty of room to pass which makes it exciting for the fans.

ADDITIONAL NOTES OF INTEREST

· Last year Truex qualified third but finished 33rd after an mid-race incident. Truex then reeled off seven consecutive top-three finishes winning the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship.

· This weekend Truex will run an Armed Forces Foundation (AFF) paint scheme on his No. 00 Toyota Camry. In addition to the custom paint scheme fans are encouraged to text ‘AFF’ to 50555 and contribute $10 that will support our country’s military and their families. The text campaign will run through the end of 2010.

· Truex is the third member of his family to compete in the K&N Pro Series East. His father, Martin Truex Sr., and his brother Martin Truex Jr. also competed in the series.

· Truex will make his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut on July 17 at Gateway International Raceway.

· The 18-year-old driver is fourth in K&N Pro Series East standings, with 296 points. He trails leader Cole Whitt by 49 points.

· The Mayetta, N.J., native will sign autographs 6-8 p.m. on May 26 at the Michael Waltrip Racing Fan Appreciation Event. The event will be held at Michael Waltrip Racing at exit 28 on I-77 in Cornelius, N.C.

On April 13, 2010, the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel heard and considered the appeal of David Ifft, crew chief of the Spraker Racing #37 NASCAR K&N Pro Series car. The appeal concerned penalties issued by NASCAR following post-race inspection on March 27, 2010, for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East event at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

The penalties concern Section 12-1 of the NASCAR Rule Book “Actions detrimental to stock car racing.”; Section 12-4-1: “Any determination by NASCAR Officials that the Race Equipment used in the Event does not conform to NASCAR rules;” and Section 20C-12.3-T: “The front shock absorbers would not extend to the specified distance within the specified period of time.”

The penalties assessed were:

Suspension from the next two (2) NASCAR K&N Pro Series east events. Suspension from NASCAR until May 26, 2010. Probation until December 31, 2010.

The Appellant requested and was granted a deferral of the penalties until such time as this hearing could be convened.

The team argued that the left front shock could have been damaged in contact with one or more other cars during the final green-white-checkered of the race; that consistent inspection procedures were not followed because shock gas pressure was not checked; that the elapsed time between conclusion of the race and shock inspection could have effected shock temperature because it was cold night; and that the severity of the penalty was excessive in relationship to other shock absorber infractions in the series when factored against this year’s 10-race calendar.

Testimony revealed that not just the left front, but both front shock absorbers, failed to meet the specifications of Section 20C-12.3-T. The temperatures taken on both shocks at the time of inspection were well within the range stipulated by the Rule Book. NASCAR Officials explained that the normal procedure when a shock absorber repeatedly fails the extension/time test is to maintain the shock in it’s as-raced condition, rather than taking the further steps of checking gas pressure or disassembly. Whereas similar penalties in the series involved a three-race suspension for the crew chief, this two-race suspension already took account of the current series calendar.

Therefore, it is the unanimous decision of the National Stock Car Racing Appeals Panel to uphold the original penalties assessed by NASCAR. The periods of suspension shall be adjusted from the date of this hearing.

The Appellant has the right under Section 15 of the Rule Book to appeal this decision to the National Stock Car Racing Chief Appellate Officer.

Russell Hackett
Dale Pinilis
Robert Yates
George Silbermann – Appellate Administrator and non-voting member

(April 4, 2010) – Revolution Racing’s four NASCAR K&N Pro Series East teams headed to South Boston (Va.) Speedway this weekend for another round of short-track racing in the South Boston 150. Ryan Gifford was the highest finishing Revolution driver, piloting his No. 2 Distribution One Chevrolet to a fourth-place finish.

Gifford’s teammates Sergio Pena, Darrell Wallace Jr., and Mackena Bell finished 14th, 20th and 23rd, respectively.

“We had a fast car all day in practice and (Crew Chief) Lee McCall made some good calls to get this car dialed in for the race,” said Gifford. “We fought hard all day and I’m glad we were able to get Distribution One another top-five finish.”

Gifford, who finished second in last year’s event at South Boston Speedway, paced the field in final practice before qualifying seventh in the No. 2 Distribution One Chevrolet. Once the race got underway, Gifford was able to keep his car up front for the long haul, settling into fifth for most of the race. With 50 to go, Gifford found himself battling for third and hung on for his second consecutive fourth-place finish.

Pena rebounded after last weekend’s early race wreck at Greenville Pickens Speedway to finish 14th at South Boston. He qualified 10th in the No. 4 Chevrolet and ran solidly in the top 10 for most of the race.

“I’m proud of all the hard work everyone at Revolution Racing put into getting this car ready to race this weekend,” said Pena. “The car felt really good all day and was capable of running up front. We just weren’t able to capitalize on it today.”

Wallace qualified third in the No. 6 Chevrolet, but started 25th after a post-qualifying repair was made to the car. He worked his way through the field and into the top 15 by the half-way mark. By lap 109, Wallace found himself inside the top-10 with a car that could contend for the lead. Wallace’s charge to the front ended abruptly when he cut a tire battling for fifth with just six laps to go. He was forced to pit to repair the car and finished 20th, four laps down to the leaders.

“It was a tough way to end a great run,” said Wallace. “The No. 6 Chevrolet was hooked up. I thought we were going to have something for them there at the end and at least come away with a top five. Unfortunately it didn’t end up that way.”

Bell struggled to find speed on fresh rubber in practice but picked up nearly a half-second in qualifying to start the race inside the top 10. She ran solidly in the top 10 for most of the race before slipping to mid-pack two-thirds of the way through the race. Still faster than several of the cars in front of her, Bell was poised to break back into the top 15 when contact from the No. 39 of Dustin Delaney sent her No. 8 Chevrolet spinning hard into the inside frontstretch wall, ending her night with 30 laps to go in the race. She was credited with a 23rd-place finish.

“It was a hard hit, probably one of the hardest I’ve ever had, and it’s a shame we had to tear up a good race car battling for a spot in the top 20,” said Bell. “I was learning a lot out there and I think we could have picked up some spots and come away with a solid finish. Now we’ll go back to the shop, regroup and get ready for Iowa.”

The race broadcast from South Boston Speedway will air Thursday, April 15 at 6 p.m. ET on SPEED.

Revolution Racing will return to the track May 23 when NASCAR K&N Pro Series East meets West at Iowa Speedway (Newton, Iowa).

“I’m definitely a lot more confident going into the race at South Boston this year than I was last year,” said Gresham, who made his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut at ‘SoBo’ on May 30, 2009. “I really didn’t know what to expect last year. There were a lot of unanswered questions for both me and the team. I have a lot better feel for these cars now and I have a great relationship with my crew chief, Mike Sibley, and the rest of the guys on my Joe Gibbs Racing team. Last year, we were still trying to figure all that out.”

If Gresham wasn’t familiar with the tight South Boston oval or with his JGR teammates, he didn’t show as he rolled to an impressive fifth-place finish in the 2009 South Boston 150.

“My goal was to finish in the Top-10, maybe the Top-5 if I could,” said Gresham after last year’s event. “South Boston is a tight place and my car got a little dinged up from the contact, but it was no big deal, It was just good, old-fashioned short-track racing. Honestly, all I really wanted to do was bring the car back intact. We accomplished all of that and I had a blast.”

Gresham eventually competed in four NASCAR K&N events for JGR in 2009 posting three top-10 finishes, In the 2010 NASCAR K&N season-opening event at Greenville-Pickens Speedway last weekend, Gresham appeared to be in line for another great finish running fifth with just 13 laps remaining when an accident not of his making knocked him out of the race.

“A car in front of us missed a shift on the restart and stacked us all up going into the corner,” Gresham stated. “The car in front of me hit him and I had my car slowed down to where I wasn’t going to run into them. Then I got hit from behind and shoved into the wreck. When I came into the pits, the crew found that we had a hole in the radiator and that ended our day.”

Despite the disappointing 24th-place finish, Gresham is confident he can rebound with another top effort at South Boston Saturday.

“I know we can win the race,” said Gresham. “We ran great at South Boston last year and I know we’re going to be even better this year. We were the fastest car on the track late in the race last weekend at Greenville. My Joe Gibbs Racing team is so good and I know every time I go to the track that we are going to have a fast car. I’m just the fortunate that I’m the guy who gets to drive it.”

Gresham and his Gresham & Associates sponsored No.18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota will take the green flag in the South Boston 150 at 3 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday. The event will be part of a NASCAR doubleheader that will also feature the NASCAR Whelen Southern Tour modifieds.

Qualifying in that division is set for 12:20 p.m. Time trials for the NASCAR K&N Pro Cup Series cars is scheduled at 1 p.m. and will be followed by an autograph session and race at 3 p.m.

The 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event will be run at the conclusion of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race Saturday.

Mooresville, N.C. (March 29, 2010) – Rookie driver

Zach Germain

started the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season off by earning the Coca Cola “Move of the Race Award” for moving up to finish 11th from his 30th-place starting position in Saturday’s season opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

“I definitely started the race further back than I wanted to, but I kept thinking of my parents’ motto of ‘patience’ as the race started. It turned out that being in the back allowed me to watch everyone in front of me for any incidents and I could follow my own line and hit my marks,” said Germain, who made his K&N Pro Series debut on Saturday.

The Columbus, OH, native drew quite a fan base from Ohio as well as from neighboring Georgia for Saturday’s race in South Carolina.

“I can’t thank my family and friends enough for their support as they made the trips from Ohio and Atlanta to watch me in my first NASCAR race. My spotter, BJ Mcleod, earned every bit of his pay check by doing a great job of keeping me out of trouble and helping me make smart decisions on the track. My crew chief, Mike Abner, and teammates did a great job making adjustments and ‘beating and banging’ all of the ‘short track dents’ out of my Germain.com Toyota Camry. The K&N Pro East Series officials were also great to work with and made me feel comfortable and at ease in my new environment,” said Germain, who came to the NKNPSE from Columbus Motor Speedway where he had raced super late models.

Germain calls his NASCAR debut a success. He and his team met their goal of completing all of the race laps and collected a very strong 11th-place finish.

“Overall, the first race for the Germain.com Camry in the K&N Pro Series was a success. I ran every lap and the car is in good shape. I have a better idea of what to expect in the future. I can’t wait for South Boston and will keep thinking of my parents’ motto of ‘patience’ heading into Saturday’s race, as once again, my parents are always right,” smiled Germain.

Germain will compete in his second K&N Pro Series East race on Saturday at South Boston Speedway. The Greenville-Pickens Speedway race will air Thursday, April 1st, on SPEED at 6:00 PM ET.

EVENT: NASCAR K&N Pro Series East; “Kevin Whitaker 150″

DATE: Saturday, March 27, 2010

TRACK: Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway

RESULTS: No. 84 Red Bull Toyota (start 1, finish 4)

+ WHITT JUST MISSES WINNING DEBUT RACE

The pole, seven laps led and a fourth-place finish. Not bad for 18-
year-old Cole Whitt, who made his stock car debut Saturday night
in the K&N Pro Series East opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

“After I got settled in on the track, I fell into a good groove and
focused on saving our equipment for when it mattered – the final
laps,” said Whitt. “We hung in the top five and got out front on the
last lap, but got a little bit out of shape when we made contact
with (Ryan) Truex. It was a good night for us though and a great
finish for our first time out.”

On the final restart, Whitt started alongside Darrell Wallace Jr. But
after his No. 84 Red Bull Toyota led by a nose at the green flag,
Wallace was able to edge ahead and get clear coming off turn two.
Wallace went on to victory, but Whitt lost two positions on the
white flag lap after contact with Ryan Truex’s heavily damaged car.

Final result in Whitt’s debut stock car race: fourth.

After a 162-lap test March 16 at half-mile Greenville-Pickens,
Saturday’s 156-lap, overtime race was the longest of Whitt’s
career. But it hardly showed, as Whitt stayed clean in a caution-
filled race (13 for 61 laps) and was one of three leaders (three
times for seven laps).

Earlier Saturday, the Red Bull Racing Team development driver
won the pole with a fast lap of 86.726 mph.

+ UP NEXT

Whitt’s first preseason test came at South Boston (Va.) Speedway,
and that’s where the K&N East series heads next for Saturday
night’s South Boston 150.

(March 28, 2010): With only 10 races to the 2010 K&N Pro Series East season, a 30th place finish is not exactly what a team hopes for in kicking off the year. But that’s exactly what happened to Dustin Delaney, driver of the No. 39 Delaney Infrastructure Chevrolet. The 20-year-old driver got caught up in a wreck on lap 19 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway that took him out of the race completely.

“Just going into one we got a little tap from behind and it was just one of those things. It’s a racing incident,” said Delaney. “We were the first caution and it’s part of racing. We’ll get the car rebuilt for next week and turn things around at South Boston.”

The team tested at the track earlier this month and had high hopes coming into the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150. Still, the team struggled after posting a qualifying effort of 21.718 seconds and earning a 29th place starting position.

After the green flag dropped, Delaney knew they would have to adjust on the car and was just waiting for a caution period to come onto pit road. He never imagined the first caution would involve himself. Delaney spun and hit the wall in turn one and sustained considerable damage to the Delaney Infrastructure Chevrolet. He headed to pit road where crew chief Jamie Aube assessed the situation. A few laps later, the team pushed the car behind the trailers.

Despite the frustrating start, Delaney is optimistic for South Boston Speedway, where he finished 10th last year.

“We run good at South Boston so I’m really excited to be going back,” said Delaney. “We were fast in the race there last year and we had a good test there a few weeks back. We’re just going to put today behind us and concentrate on that.”

The K&N Pro Series East will be at South Boston Speedway on Saturday, April 3 with a start time of 3 p.m.

(March 28, 2010): Late Model sensation Joey “Pole” Polewarczyk had high aspirations heading into the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. Instead, the driver of the No. 16 Fadden Racing entry left on a note of frustration and with a torn-up racecar. The caution plagued race had more than its share of victims and Polewarczyk was able to survive with a decent 12th place finish.

“The car was too tight from the center off, but we made a bunch of pit stops to try and adjust for that. We made the car better, but there was just wreck after wreck after wreck,” Polewarczyk said. “This is my first race on a short track with these guys and there is no give and take. If there’s a hole, someone is going to take it. I know how it is to fix a body panel and work all week on it. This being my first week, I backed out a lot of times.”

Polewarczyk started the race from the 16th position and spent the first half of the race maintaining his position in the top-15 while pitting during caution periods for adjustments. In the second half, Polewarczyk got caught up in an accident at lap 79.

“Someone hit the 35 and he spun. He spun up into my lane. I was going to go low but cars were coming that way and then I was going to go high and I would have been in the marbles. I just stopped. I didn’t hit him (the 35), but then someone else just never stopped behind me. It pushed me into him and that’s how the front got crinkled and the rear got crinkled.”

Crew chief Harry Norcross had Polewarczyk bring the car onto pit road, and after pulling out some sheet metal, sent him back onto the track. Cautions dominated the second half of the race making it hard for the young driver to advance through the field. By the time the checkers dropped, Polewarczyk had posted a 12th place finish on the lead lap.

“I’m happy with working with these guys (at Fadden Racing) and with this crew,” he said. “Considering the way the car looks and for how many times we pitted, this is a decent finish. I know this team is capable and I know this car is capable. We were off on the setup a little tonight and we got all banged up, a 12th place finish is a lot better than what I thought we were going to come out of here with.”

Fadden Racing and Joey Polewarczyk return to action on Saturday, April 3 at South Boston Speedway.

The Michael Waltrip Racing development driver won the championship on the heels of three wins (Watkins Glen International, Thompson Speedway and Lime Rock), two poles, seven top-five and eight top-10 finishes in just 11 starts.

QUOTES

ON DEFENDING HIS K&N SERIES TITLE: “There are so many good drivers in this series. You’ve got a lot of veterans like Matt Kobyluck and Steve Park plus you’ve got a lot of younger guys like myself, Sergio Garcia and Brett Moffitt. It’s a great blend of experience. I know every race is going to be a battle.”

ON GREENVILLE PICKENS SPEEDWAY: “I really like racing there. We’ve turned a bunch of laps there in testing and the race last year so I feel like I’ve got a pretty good handle on the place. The main thing for us is to get a solid finish to start the season off right. I know that everybody on the NAPA Auto Parts team is ready to get back to racing.”

ON BEING THE FIRST SERIES CHAMPION AT MWR: “That’s one of the coolest things about winning the title. They’ve got a championship banner hanging up in the shop and it’s something that me and the guys on the team can look at every day and take pride in. I’m really glad that Michael Waltrip, Ty Norris, and everyone at MWR gave me the opportunity. Now it’s up to us to go get another title for the team and everyone at NAPA. I really think we’re going to have another great season.”

ADDITIONAL NOTES OF INTEREST

- Truex is the younger brother of two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Martin Truex Jr. who drivers MWR’s No. 56 NAPA Toyota in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition.

- The 18-year-old driver started fifth and finished 14th last year at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina.

- Truex is the third member of his family to compete in the K&N Pro Series East. His father, Martin Truex Sr., and his brother Martin Truex Jr. also competed in the series.

MWR announced last week that Truex will run six NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2010. He will make his NNS debut on July 17 at Gateway International Raceway. Also tentatively scheduled are Michigan, Richmond, Kansas, the fall Charlotte race and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Mooresville, N.C. (March, 22, 2010) – Germain Racing’s newest rookie driver, Zach Germain, will drive the No. 24 Germain.com Camry in Saturday’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, SC. The race marks a series debut both for Germain Racing and it’s rookie driver. Germain and the crew have logged many laps of testing in preparation for the 150 lap event.

“In the past week, I’ve driven on three very different short tracks and I’ve had the opportunity to drive the Germain.com Camry as well as the Germain.com Tundra. What I’ve learned about the different tracks, vehicles and tires should help us with our team goal to complete every lap this season,” explained the 25 year-old rookie of the year contender who moved into the Germain Racing shop in January in order to be completely immersed in developing his racing career.

Living in a one-room efficiency at Germain Racing has allowed the young driving talent to spend countless hours working at the race shop, learning more about the race cars and receiving a wealth of knowledge from fellow Germain Racing drivers and crew chiefs. The availability of so many resources has made the transition from his hometown of Columbus, OH, to living and racing out of Mooresville, N.C., highly rewarding for Zach while letting his parents, Steve and Kim Germain, know their son has made a ‘good move.’

“Zach is getting a lot of guidance and coaching which is something he really appreciates and needs,” explains his mother, Kim, who says that Zach is definitely the ‘racer’ of the family. “There’s no question that of our three children, Zach is the one I’d say would be most likely to become a race car driver. He has always been very competitive in sports and in school.”

For his part, Zach, a 2007 Miami University graduate, concedes that his sister, Jessica, 28, could probably beat him in golf—but that is it. Zach’s brother, Austin, 20, is currently a student at Miami; Jessica works as an attorney in Columbus.

Zach has a history of scholastic achievement and fierce sports competition. This makes it easy to see why he is so studious in his approach to learning all he can about racing in the K&N Pro Series East. Zach has watched hours of race tapes and read pages of statistics in preparation for his series debut.

“No driver completed all the laps in the series last year, and at Greenville, a lead-lap finish was basically a top-ten finish. The K&N Pro Series East statistics show what everyone in racing already knows—it is a very competitive NASCAR division. For our team to meet our goal of completing every lap in the Germain.com Camry would be a huge accomplishment,” explained Zach.

Steve Germain, president of Germain Motor Company and an owner of Germain Racing, has watched his son progress from Legends racing to the Germain.com Camry. He is impressed with what Zach and the crew, led by Mike Abner, have accomplished in the off-season.

“I was listening to Zach over the radio at the Greenville test and realized that ‘I was listening to a race car driver.’ He was giving great feedback and communicating well with Mike and the crew. As a parent, it was a special moment to hear Zach doing well with his career and as a team owner, it made me very confident that Zach and the Germain.com Camry crew are building the groundwork for Zach to continue to grow as a race car driver,” said Steve.

Zach Germain races the Germain.com Camry Saturday, March 27th, at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. The race will air on SPEED, Thursday, April 1st at 6 PM ET.

Germain Racing is a championship-winning organization competing in all three of NASCAR’s national series. The team adds the K&N Pro Series East No. 24 Germain.com Camry to its lineup this year, and may add K&N Pro Series West and late model races. Sponsorship and branding opportunities are available. Visit GermainRacing.com for more information.

North Haverhill, N.H. (March 22, 2010): Fadden Racing won’t begin campaigning their new development driver, Julian Camilo Albarracin, in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East until June, but their presence will be strong in the series until then. Joey “Pole” Polewarczyk will return to the Fadden Racing drivers seat to compete at the series opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on Saturday, March 27 and will return for South Boston Speedway on April 2.

“Joey is a very talented driver and we’re excited to be giving him the chance to show that at this level,” said Fadden Racing car owner and K&N Pro Series two-time champion Mike Olsen. “Joey came and tested with us earlier this month and he showed he could get the job done. We’re pretty confident heading into this race.”

Polewarczyk has built a name for himself as a regular on the ACT Late Model Tour, where he finished seventh in the 2009 point standings with two wins. Last June, the 20-year-old driver won the Vermont Governor’s Cup 150 at Thunder Road after fielding a second car for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart.

Polewarczyk made one start at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last year for Fadden Racing and two previous starts in the series back in 2008 for different car owners. Two of his starts were made at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and the other at Thompson Motor Speedway with a career best finish of sixth place. The driver welcomes the opportunity to get on the tighter confines of a short track like Greenville, where he expects to come home with a top-10 finish.

“I haven’t had a lot of time in these kind of cars at a track where I was comfortable. I love Loudon — don’t get me wrong — but it’s not something I’m used to,” said Polewarczyk. “I’m used to the ACT Tour and the smaller tracks we run on there. (The short tracks) are a lot more what I’m used to.”

“The way the track looks, qualifying is very important there,” he continued. “If you start up front, you’re going to get away from crashes and everything that’s bound to happen throughout the race. My personal goal is a top-10 finish. The car is definitely capable of more, but for me to go there and get a good top-10 finish would be awesome.”

Fadden Racing will be aggressively seeking additional sponsorship to continue fielding cars for Polewarczyk in the series at least through the first half of the season. Anybody interested in sponsorship opportunities with Fadden Racing can contact car owner Mike Olsen at molsen@together.net.

The Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway will take the green flag on Saturday, March 27th at 8 p.m. with qualifying scheduled for 6 p.m.

Waterford, Conn. (March 22, 2010): This weekend, Matt Kobyluck and the Mohegan Sun race team expect nothing but a top-five finish at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. A championship run almost demands it.

“With the schedule as it is this year, you can not afford to have a bad week,” said the driver of the No. 40 Mohegan Sun Chevrolet on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. “We start off our season like the Cup ends their season. You have to come out strong and ready to go. It’s the beginning of our Chase.”

The 2010 season takes the green flag this weekend with the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway – the first of a ten race schedule. Greenville is a semi-banked half-mile oval that has hosted NASCAR-sanctioned races since 1951. This weekend’s event marks the fifth appearance of the K&N Pro Series East since their debut in 2006. Kobyluck has started all five of those races with an average start of ninth place and an average finish of 13th.

“It’s a tough track to predict your finish so if you survive with a top-10 you’re doing well. Qualifying is definitely key, but you have to have a car with good forward bite. That is paramount,” Kobyluck said.

In last year’s race at Greenville, Kobyluck finished eighth despite having no grip in the tires for the last 75 laps. Prior to that, Kobyluck was a contender in the top-five.

“We had a really good car for the start of the race and after 25 laps in I thought we had the potential to finish in the top three,” said the 2008 Champion. ““But, about a third of the way through the rear grip just totally went away. It didn’t matter what I did. I couldn’t get into the corner, I couldn’t get through the middle, I couldn’t get off. It’s just one of those things where you have to play the cards you’re dealt.”

Greenville-Pickens has not produced a repeat winner since the East Series began racing there, and Kobyluck will be aiming to add his name to that short list of victors.

“I’d love to come out of there with a win,” Kobyluck added. “It’s a tough little track. I think the setup of the car was really good last year and we could have been a contender. We’ll just have to see how our cards play out.”

The team tested at the track earlier this month and were pleased with the results.

“We have a good baseline to work off,” said crew chief Perry Waite. “We tried a bunch of different things while we were testing and we’re happy with the setup. I’m confident we’ll have a top-five car.”

The Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 goes green at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 27th. SPEED will broadcast the race on April 1 – check local listings for time period.

(March 10, 2010): The 2010 K&N Pro Series East season doesn’t take the green flag until Saturday, March 27th, but for Dustin Delaney, driver of the No. 39 Delaney Infrastructure Chevrolet, the season will kick off this Sunday when he heads south to kick off his pre-season testing.

Delaney and his team, led by crew chief Jamie Aube, will test at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina on March 17th and follow it up with a test at South Boston Speedway in Virginia on March 18th.

“We’re heading down south to work on the car for a few days and then we’re going to concentrate on testing,” said Delaney. “We have a clear direction to follow and our plan is to get the car the best it can be so that when we do unload at Greenville in a couple of weeks, we’re strong right out of the box.”

Delaney spent the off season racing a Late Model at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida where he posted four top-10 and three top-five finishes in four nights of racing. His success has made him only more anxious to start the 2010 season on top.

“Seat time is always a good thing,” said Delaney. “We were pretty happy with our off-season and we’re definitely anxious to put that into action in the East Series. Our goal this year is to be there in the top-five every week. Seat time – whether you’re racing a Late Model or testing at the track – is only going to help us achieve that goal.”

At Greenville last year, Delaney qualified ninth and was on his way to a top-10 finish when he got spun and was relegated to 13th for the race conclusion.

“We had a strong car last year,” said Delaney, who finished eighth in the 2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East point standings. “Our finish just didn’t reflect that.
Red Bull Racing Team will guide Cole Whitt out of his open-wheel comfort zone and into the world of stock cars, as the 18-year-old development driver will contend for the 2010 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship in the No. 84 Red Bull Toyota.

“Cole has been a successful part of the Red Bull motorsports program and we’re excited to have the opportunity to work with him this year,” said RBRT’s Elton Sawyer, who will oversee Whitt’s development program. “He’s a very talented young driver and is eager to learn what it takes to advance to the next level of his career.”

A Red Bull athlete since 2004 and open-wheel phenom since he was 8, Whitt will make his stock car debut in the East Series’ season opener March 27 at South Carolina’s Greenville-Pickens Speedway.

“I like racing so much and I have a blast with it,” Whitt said. “I’ve always been in love with racing and I’m really excited about being here and working with the Red Bull Racing Team. I have a lot to learn, but I’m confident that with hard work and valuable seat time it will pay off and I’ll reach my dream of being a successful NASCAR driver.”

Whitt has already seen success in the upper ranks of the United States Auto Club. In 2008, Whitt, then 17, won the National Midget title to become USAC’s youngest champion. A year later, he finished second in the National Sprint Car standings and sixth in midgets. On the local and national levels in 2009, he won a combined 17 races in 80-some starts on asphalt and dirt.

Most recently, Whitt finished second in January’s Chili Bowl Midget Nationals — the Daytona 500 of midget racing.
