1. In case you missed it: Dreyer & Reinbold teleconference

2. IZOD IndyCar Series and Mazda Road to Indy drivers celebrate Thanksgiving

3. Star Mazda champion Tristan Vautier signs with Sam Schmidt Motorsports

4. Honda Indy Toronto tickets on sale Nov. 23

5. Hawksworth signs with Team Pelfrey for Star Mazda Championship

1. In case you missed it: Dreyer & Reinbold teleconference: Dreyer & Reinbold team owners Dennis Reinbold and Robbie Buhl were guests on today’s INDYCAR conference call. The pair discussed the team’s decision to join Lotus for 2012 and its plans for the upcoming season. A full transcript and MP3 audio of the call is available at www.indycar.com/media.

Selected quotes are below.

Q. What do you gentlemen like in Lotus? Why did you make this move with them particularly?

ROBBIE BUHL: Well, I think one of the things, as I said at the opening, you know, their focus of how they are going to rebrand their sports car and how they promote that and market that is going to be through the IndyCar program.

So they are going to be pretty vested in doing everything they can to make sure their teams are successful and healthy. I mean, that’s a good thing from a commercial side of it.

But they are an engineering company. And to tap into the resources of what they already have in place and kind of on the payroll there, we are hoping that that really provides us some additional engineering support as we continue, as Dennis said, as we kind of are rebranding ourselves Team Lotus, DRR and really kind of going under a different initiative here of really strengthening our engineering department and kind of building out from the technical and engineering side of our company, and then complementing it with just a good operations department and commercial department.

Q. You talk about engineering changes. Obviously that means Larry Curry, it was announced he won’t be returning next year. So when you say looking to bolster the engineering side, does that mean having additional IndyCar engineers or Lotus engineers or both? And do you know when there will be an announcement?

DENNIS REINBOLD: We have one guy starting next week, and he’s going to be basically a systems type of engineer. So he will be overseeing the entire technical package and componentry just to make sure everything we touch is assembled as well as we can get it.

And so we are going to do quite a bit of testing coming up. So it’s going to be a pretty test intensive off season, so we are really looking forward to getting on track, as well as getting our guys to touch and measure and look all over the new chassis to figure out what makes it tick so we can go a little quicker.

And we will be adding some other people. I know earlier on it was said that we are going to be two full time cars and one more at Indy, that’s still up in the air. We have not signed a driver yet. That’s something that Robbie and I are working on right now, and we are hoping to take care of that the next few weeks.

And we don’t know if we are going to be one or two cars. We would like to be two cars, and we are set up for that. So that’s our goal.

Q. Dennis, you’ve acknowledged that you didn’t have the greatest year in 2011, so there’s a bit of a performance gap that needs to be closed, but you’re also working with an engine manufacturer that’s new to the series. So once you get on track you and start testing, what is the priority? Speed or reliability?

DENNIS REINBOLD: Both, obviously, are important. The reliability is something that we’ll work closely in testing with Lotus. Hopefully that’s not an issue, and we can focus more on speed. That’s a little more fun to work on.

But yeah, you try to make sure that all of the like Robbie said before, until you get the cars out on the track and until we lineup at St. Pete, there’s a lot of unknowns that are going to come into the 2012 season, not just for us, but for the entire field. You do the best you can in testing and you trust that Lotus, as well as Honda and Chevy are going to make a good product, as well as Dallara, and it’s going to be raceable. So you go out and do whatever you can.

We’ll probably the reliability is going to fall upon Lotus more so than us, and then the speed out of the car is going to fall on us more than Lotus. Although Lotus will help us with the chassis development as well.

Q. One more question for you. You guys have both been in the series for more than a decade as tea, owners and principles. There’s definitely an excitement for the new engine and chassis package in 2012. Can you recall a time in your tenure as owners in the series, which stretches back to 1999 and 2000, where there has been, A, this much change, and B, this much excitement about an equipment package? We have had equipment packages before during your time but doesn’t seem to be as extensive as maybe the new package for 2012. Do you have any comments on that?

DENNIS REINBOLD: Yeah, I think it’s most exciting time that I remember. We have three engine manufacturers coming in, and a brand new chassis, and that’s all happening at one time.

And then we’re a year away from a body kit package that each of the manufacturers, it looks like, will design for the car. So we are going to have plenty of challenges facing us.

This past year was great in a lot of ways. We had incredible crowds at most of our races. And so there’s a lot to build on for 2012. We have got some pretty good momentum. I know our TV ratings are up significantly over where they have been.

We work hard to just kind of keep our head down and control what is within our control and working with our sponsors, there’s a level of excitement that they have as we go forward to a brand new opportunity in 2012.

ROBBIE BUHL: And another variable that’s going to be kind of new to us is and not new to everybody, but we are going back to turbo charged motor. They are a smaller displacement. We are going to the V 6. So that’s a big thing just historically looking back.

But this whole idea of maybe controlling the horsepower of the cars as we transition from short ovals to big ovals to street and road courses I think really is going to be an interesting twist to how we manage our product and how it looks on track. It’s going to be exciting.

2. IZOD IndyCar Series and Mazda Road to Indy drivers celebrate Thanksgiving: IZOD IndyCar Series driver Jay Howard, Star Mazda drivers Nick Mancuso and Zach Veach, and USF2000 driver Shannon McIntosh shared their plans for Thanksgiving with IndyCar.com.

NICK MANCUSO: Typically, my hometown friends and I start the festivities with a “Turkey Bowl” flag-that-becomes-tackle football game Thursday morning. Then we descend upon our respective homes and I try my best to help/stay out of my Mom’s way as she cooks up a storm. My parents’ house has always been the traditional gathering place, with anywhere from 10-25 people showing up hungry and ready to eat.

JAY HOWARD: I will be at my wife Courtney’s parents’ house eating tons and watching NFL in the man cave! I am actually also playing some flag football as well!

ZACH VEACH: Fortunately, I am going to be home for Thanksgiving this year. It’s always real special for me to spend time catching up with my close and distant family. I’m always thankful for how supportive they are—they constantly surprise me with how much they know about the racing world! Going to my grandparent’s house for dinner with the whole family is my favorite tradition. It’s just a day to slow down, enjoy the company and get embarrassed by all of the stories about the things I did when I was little.

SHANNON McINTOSH: Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it back to Ohio for Thanksgiving and this will be the first time I have spent this holiday away from family. :( With so many things going on, I opted to wait a few weeks to see them at Christmas time. I will however, be spending it with my trainer and family in St. Pete.

I typically do a five mile run called the Turkey Trot with my Grandpa on Thanksgiving morning in my hometown of Miamisburg, Ohio. It’s a great way to start the day and forget about having to be guilty when you eat later in the day!

3. Star Mazda champion Tristan Vautier signs with Sam Schmidt Motorsports: Just two months after winning the 2011 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear title, Tristan Vautier has already aligned himself with a championship-caliber Firestone Indy Lights team.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports, which has won four of the last six Firestone Indy Lights titles, including the 2011 championship with Josef Newgarden, announced Nov. 18 that it has signed Vautier for the 2012 season.

Vautier received a Mazda Road to Indy scholarship to advance to Firestone Indy Lights after he won the Star Mazda Championship this past season. The Mazda Road to Indy Program, in its third year of existence, aims to help talented young drivers advance their careers and ultimately move to the top level of open-wheel racing—the IZOD IndyCar Series.

“When Mazda established our ladder program in 2007, we had drivers exactly like Tristan in our minds—drivers that can get the job done in the car and out of the car,” said John Doonan, Director of Mazda Motorsports. “We are so proud to be associated with the IZOD IndyCar Series on the Mazda Road to Indy and Tristan will be a terrific representative in 2012.

“Sam Schmidt Motorsports was the champion’s choice again for this coming season, and after such a successful campaign with Conor Daly in 2011, it appears Tristan will be in good hands for a run at the 2012 Firestone Indy Lights Championship.”

In the two years that the scholarship has been awarded, both Star Mazda champions have chosen to compete with Sam Schmidt Motorsports. The fact that the team has produced the five series champions since 2004 makes it a popular choice for drivers looking to emulate that success.

“Tristan brings a wealth of experience and success to the team, and I’m excited to have him in the No. 77 car,” said Sam Schmidt Motorsports owner Sam Schmidt, whose team scored wins with four different drivers in 2011. “I look forward to working with another of the Mazda Road to Indy scholarship winners. It’s a good program, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Vautier spent two seasons in the Star Mazda Championship. In 2010, he won two races, finished on podium three times, had five top-five finishes, 10 top-10s and finished fifth in the championship. This past season, he had four wins and six podiums with JDC Motorsports and never finished outside the top five.

“First off, I’d like to express how thankful I am to Mazda, INDYCAR and Sam Schmidt for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime,” Vautier said. “It’s an honor to know that I will be representing the Mazda Road to Indy one step below the IZOD IndyCar Series next season, and I can’t wait to be in the car. Knowing I will drive for a championship-winning team such as Sam Schmidt Motorsports makes it feel even better, and the guys can be sure I’ll give it my all. Now, I have a lot of work ahead of me and tons of things to learn.”

Learning is something that Vautier has stressed as very important to him leading up to his first season in Firestone Indy Lights. He recently proved his potential in the larger, more powerful car in an open test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in late October.

When deciding which team to go to for the 2012 season, Vautier said that Sam Schmidt Motorsport’s success in Indy Lights was not the only thing that attracted him to the team. He looked ahead to the future and what he hopes to one day accomplish in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

“Sam Schmidt Motorsports has a successful IZOD IndyCar Series structure, which makes me hope to be able to develop something on the longer term if I get strong results and do a good job out of the car,” he said.

Now that he has signed with a team, Vautier looks forward to focusing on other aspects of preparing for 2012. On his agenda is learning more about the car and building up his endurance for Firestone Indy Lights races, which are longer than races in Star Mazda. He can also take a second to realize how quickly his career has developed in such a short period of time.

“These two months went by really fast, and this strong ladder system makes things move very quickly for the championship winners,” he said. “It’s only November, and I’m already signed at the next level.”

4. Honda Indy Toronto tickets on sale Nov. 23: The 2012 edition of the Honda Indy Toronto will mark a new milestone in auto racing with the introduction of a new IZOD IndyCar Series chassis and the return of engine manufacturer competition.

The event returns to the streets of Toronto July 6-8, 2012. Tickets will be available for sale on November 23, in time for the holiday season.

“Thanks to growing sponsorships, vendors and quality racing, the event continues to deliver a unique experience,” said Charlie Johnstone, Vice-President and General Manager, Honda Indy Toronto. “The addition of a new chassis and engine competition will heat things up even more.”

The 2012 Honda Indy Toronto will continue to bring a diverse schedule of events for Canadian race fans. The marquee event will continue to be the IZOD IndyCar Series, with the support series races to be announced at a later date.

Tickets start at $30 for a single day general admission pass on Saturday and peak at $423 for a weekend Gold-level grandstand pass. To purchase tickets or to view a complete list of prices and ticket packages, visit hondaindytoronto.com/tickets or call 1-877-503-6869.

5. Hawksworth signs with Team Pelfrey for Star Mazda Championship: Team Pelfrey has signed 20-year-old Englishman Jack Hawksworth for the 2012 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear season.

Hawksworth adds even more momentum to the surging team, which had an extremely successful 2011 season with drivers Connor de Phillippi and Nick Andries who finished second and third in the points standings, respectively—a finish that was enough to take the 2011 Team Championship. Overall, the team won four races, had 13 podium finishes, captured three poles and posted the fastest race lap five times.

“We are delighted to welcome Jack to Team Pelfrey,” team manager Geoff Fickling said. “He is exactly the type of driver our team looks for – quick, intelligent, dedicated, and easy to work with. It’s great that he’s made the decision to pursue a career of it in the states, and we look forward to great things this coming year, and feel that Jack has an extremely bright future within the Mazda Road to Indy.”

Hawksworth joins the team fresh off of a fourth-place finish in the Formula Renault U.K. Championship in 2011. Throughout the season, he scored one win, four podium finishes and one pole position. He also competed in the series during the 2010 season—his first year of car racing—finishing third in the championship.

A native of Bradford, England, Hawksworth began karting in 2004 at the South Yorkshire kart club in Junior Max. After spending a year at the club level, he moved on to the National and International levels where he eventually captured the 2006 European Junior Max title. Towards the end of his karting career, he won the Senior Max British Kartmasters Grand Prix championship in 2010.

In late October, Hawksworth made his way out to Indianapolis for the two-day Chris Griffis Memorial Mazda Road to Indy Open Test. He was fastest in the afternoon session of the second day of Star Mazda Championship testing.

“I’m delighted to have agreed terms to compete for such a successful outfit,” Hawksworth said. “I really like the way Team Pelfrey works. Their preparation is excellent, and it’s good to be in such a professional environment. I can’t wait to get back in the car, and I believe we can carry our testing form forward into next year.”

The Kansas City-based engineering firm will be represented on the No. 22 DRR machine of Justin Wilson for the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season.

TranSystems is a global engineering firm focused on delivering solutions across the entire transportation world. To achieve this, TranSystems consulting services span all modes, including architectural, engineering and planning, management and supply chain, transportation security and transportation real estate consulting services.

Integral to TranSystems involvement with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is a strong commitment to the official charitable arm of the team, Racing For Kids. At multiple race events in 2011, TranSystems executives and their clients will make dedicated hospital visits to children’s hospitals and participate in numerous silent auctions, with all proceeds going to Racing For Kids.

“We’ve been fortunate at TranSystems to have partnered with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Racing for Kids. First, it meets our own need to contribute, to give something back, as we support these professional IZOD IndyCar drivers in their tireless visits to children’s hospitals around the world. Second, it’s given us a great opportunity to introduce our flagship clients to this worthy cause, while providing a forum for entertainment, leveraging our relationship with those same clients,” stated Brian Larson, Chairman & CEO of TranSystems Corporation.

Founded in Detroit in 1989, Racing for Kids® is designed to use the increasing popularity of motorsports to focus public attention and funding on the health care needs of children. Racing for Kids® representatives have visited more than 20,000 young patients in nearly 400 hospitals in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Australia. In addition, over $5 million has been raised through donations and specific fund raising events for children’s hospitals and child health institutions and causes across the country.

“Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is extremely happy to renew our relationship with TranSystems. We have worked hard to maintain a strong relationship and we couldn’t be happier to have them commit to us for a seventh year in 2011. We have grown together and certainly look forward to excelling on and off the track this year,” commented Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Co-Owner, Robbie Buhl.

TranSystems will be featured on Justin Wilson’s No. 22 car for the 2011 season and will have primary sponsorship status at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma this year. DRR had a very successful 2010 season with Wilson. The team/driver duo earned two podium results with second place finishes at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. They also earned a pole position together at the Honda Indy Toronto and led 11 laps at the Indianapolis 500.

“This is a great opportunity for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. I’d like to personally thank Brian Larson for his continued support,” commented Dennis Reinbold, Dreyer & Reinbold Co-Owner.

The Indianapolis based crew will hit the pavement March 14th and 15th for the first open test of the season at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. Please stay tuned for more announcements to come in the following days.

About Dreyer & Reinbold Racing:

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is entering its 12th season of full-time competition in 2011, making it one of the longest-tenured teams in IZOD IndyCar Series competition. With Buhl behind the wheel, the two owners tasted victory in their debut race. The 2009 IZOD IndyCar Series season-opener, on the streets of St. Petersburg, marked Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s 200th series start. DRR now has over 270 starts to tuck under its belt and has qualified a total of 27 cars for the Indianapolis 500. In its history, the team has boasted a championship list of alumni drivers. Besides Buhl, the team has run Indianapolis 500 winners, Al Unser, Jr., Buddy Lazier, and Buddy Rice, along with IZOD IndyCar Series race winner, Ryan Briscoe. The team has one of the longest lines of heritage in American open-wheel racing and the Indianapolis 500 as Dennis Reinbold’s grandfather, “Pop” Dreyer, built leading roadsters that raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

RANDY BERNARD

THE MODERATOR: Welcome to the IZOD IndyCar series teleconference, in which we have announced the 2011 series schedule. That event took place today at the Milwaukee Mile, and the Mile played an important role in the 2011 schedule. We’ll get to that in just a bit.

Our guest today is IZOD IndyCar Series CEO Randy Bernard, and Randy will talk about the schedule.

Before I ask a question of Randy, I want to give a few bullet points about the schedule. There are 17 events. There are nine road and street events, eight ovals. The schedule remains the most diverse and challenging schedule in all of motorsports. The season opener is March 27 on the streets of St. Petersburg, and the Brazil race moves to May 1, that’s the street course down there in Sao Paulo. It is the lead in race to the 100th anniversary of the Indianapolis 500, which is May 29 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

And then we have an exciting dual race set up at Texas Motor Speedway on June 11. That’s one of two night races. The other night race is June 25 at Iowa Speedway on the oval there. That event moves to a night race. And sandwiched between those two events is the return of the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday June 19. We are very happy to return to Milwaukee. It’s an historical venue of great importance to the IndyCar Series, and all of open wheel racing.

Another new event is August 14 at New Hampshire, Indy style racing returns to New Hampshire after a hiatus. Very pleased to go back up into New England to the great race fans up there.

And we also have a new event September 4 on the streets of Baltimore, an exciting city course that takes us past the world renowned Inner Harbor and that will be a lot of fun.

Kentucky shifts to October 2, and the season finale which will be announced in the coming weeks, will be on an oval.

Randy, thank you for joining us today. Appreciate it.

RANDY BERNARD: Thanks for having me.

THE MODERATOR: What were the goals of the 2011 schedule while you were building it with various series partners, and how does this schedule meet those objectives?

RANDY BERNARD: I think the first thing we need to do is we wanted to make sure we defined IndyCar first. And I think that we need to make sure that when we define IndyCar, it’s truly what we are, and that is the most versatile, fastest race car and race car drivers in the world; and just separates us from F1 and separates us from NASCAR, and it’s truly what IndyCar is.

And in doing that, we need to make sure that we keep the versatility from the different types of tracks that we race, and that includes having superspeedways with short ovals as well as road courses and street courses. And I think that when we set the 2011 schedule up this year, the one thing we wanted to make sure that we were doing is making sure that there was versatility through and through that series.

Q. Mr. Kelly, it’s a pleasure to hear your voice again. Randy, there’s been a lot of talk that the finale could be in Las Vegas and curious if you could update us on the status of that, and if you have a deadline for securing financial backing for a possible Vegas event.

RANDY BERNARD: Well, Jeff, you and I go way back and you know how much I love Vegas, and I think Vegas is one of the greatest cities in the world. I don’t think there’s a better city in the world to culminate your championships than in Vegas.

I think that knowing me, you know that that has to be one of my goals. I have tremendous relationships there with the LVTVA, as well as with the tremendous amount of hotels and casinos. So right now we are doing our due diligence and hoping that we can come to an agreement here very shortly on that event.

But we also have … Fontana is very interested if we cannot get that done. So that’s one of the key reasons we have not made the decision at this point yet, but I’m optimistic that we’ll see some type of decision made within the next two weeks.

Q. Normally a series like this would have some adjustments to the schedule, but you walked into a situation with really a major overall. Do you feel like this is kind of a relief, given all that you’ve had to go through? Was it a pretty daunting challenge? Maybe not as big as the CART challenge, but a pretty good size?

RANDY BERNARD: I think the relief will come next year if we sell out and have big-time attendance at these races. I think the work just begins. Now that we have announced the schedule, we have to make sure that we follow through and work on marketing strategies that allow us to have great crowds, and I think that’s one of our biggest concerns; our objective is that we need to really work on, and that is making sure that we grow in our sport.

Q. Can you give me a sense for how many of these I don’t ask for specifics maybe, but for how many of these events you had to be a promoter or take a more active role in?

RANDY BERNARD: I have actually … of the 16 that we have announced, we will not be … we will be helping with Milwaukee the most, I would say.

We have 100 percent confidence in all of Bruton Smith’s tracks. I think Bruton has told us time and time again that he really, really likes open-wheel racing and IndyCar, and he wants to see it grow.

So I think that those are the type of partners that we want to make sure that we are working with, because they are not only saying it; they are doing it.

Q. One thing strikes me about the schedule is that there’s pretty good pacing and separation between events on the schedule; can you speak to that as well as specifically to the extra week between Toronto and Edmonton to recover from the carnage that quite often happens at that Toronto race and to get across the country.

RANDY BERNARD: I have to give 100 percent of that credit to Sarah Davis, who has helped orchestrate the schedule, and I think that she has done a really good job of working with these promoters and making sure that there is time in between some of these events.

And the other one, the big one was between the Indianapolis 500 and Texas. Same thing; we felt that after the Indianapolis 500, the team owners needed a little bit more time probably to work on their cars and get their teams together.

So that was the reason we took that week off there, as well.

Q. And can you speak to the Toronto / Edmonton?

RANDY BERNARD: I tell you, they are two great events on the schedule, my first time, both of them this year. And in Toronto, a huge city and the city shuts down for IndyCar up there. It was absolutely fantastic to see the crowd and how much they enjoyed it. Then we went to Edmonton, and they had perfect weather and they had a great race.

But I really enjoyed both Canadian events.

Q. Can you talk to the spacing between those two races? It was back-to-back consecutive weekends last year.

RANDY BERNARD: It just worked out that way. I think it’s because the promoters wanted it that way and Sarah, and I think it makes great sense. It allows them to promote the winner out of Toronto for Edmonton, for sure.

Q. It looks like there’s a pretty specific break between you guys and ISC, the four tracks you are dropping are ISC. I’m wondering if that’s because you couldn’t cut a deal with them or because SMI made you an offer you couldn’t refuse. And also wondering if Homestead was more of a victim that it’s an ISC track or that you don’t want to come any more?

RANDY BERNARD: No, no, I don’t want to get shot when I go down there, that’s for sure. But I think that we never want to close doors with any of our promoters, especially ISC.

ISC has promoted almost 70 races; 66 races in their history with us, and I think that’s very important to know. But I also think it’s very important that we have to make sure that we are trying to move IndyCar to the next level, the IZOD IndyCar Series, and our … one of our goals has to be, for next year, is let’s get 24 different promoters interested in the series, and let’s make sure we pick the top 17, 18, 19 events. And I think that’s very important for us to do.

So Bruton didn’t underestimate … if you don’t do ISC. He has never mentioned ISC to me. So I mean, unfortunately ISC was a victim this year of … the scheduling was a major issue; sanction agreement and fees were another, and I think third would be marketing. Those would be the key factors most likely as to why we are not going back to any of those four tracks.

Q. Would you like to come back to Homestead at some point if you had the opportunity?

RANDY BERNARD: Yeah, I think Homestead … you never rule out any track. I think we want to play … we want to race at tracks where we can have significant amount of press in the market, as well as great crowds.

And if there was a way that we could see it, planning to take it to that level, definitely we would return to Homestead.

Q. You mentioned three items about the break in ISC, Daytona Beach is the home of the ISC and looking as that aspect of the scheduling; you mentioned about marketing and not competing against NASCAR. What were some of the other items?

RANDY BERNARD: The scheduling, sanctioning fees and agreements, and marketing were the primary factors.

John Saunders and I had a great conversation in Chicago. I have spoken with Lesa several times, and we are not burning bridges. We want to keep a great relationship there, but we also, we believe that we have a great set of promoters and a great set of tracks on our 2011 series.

Q. Back to the Homestead issue. How much did the attendance play a factor? They were not exactly running in front huge crowds there. Was that a factor, as well?

RANDY BERNARD: A significant factor. I think that that’s one of the primary factors we have to look at in going somewhere is the attendance, and if you can’t deliver attendance, I’m not sure why any series would want to continue to go back.

You know, I think Homestead, I’ve never been there, so this will be my first time, but I’ve had a lot of people tell me it’s a great race.

Again, we don’t want to close doors. If we can figure out a way to make and put that back on the series, I would not want to say it would be a final event if we could work out a deal with Vegas, but I think that it definitely is going on our series again.

Q. Getting off on a different tack, welcome to the United States. You arrived back yesterday, didn’t you?

RANDY BERNARD: Yes, ma’am, I sure did.

Q. Could you talk at all about your travels, or is that something you can’t discuss at this time?

RANDY BERNARD: I can discuss some of it, and I think the part that can’t is that my primary objective in going to Europe was meeting with auto manufacturers, press and F1 teams and just letting them know the direction of IndyCar and that we are alive and well and have great momentum. I think we accomplished that.

Also, we want to make sure that we tried to invite as many manufacturers to participate for either engines or aero kits as possible for 2012 in the new car.

So it was a whirlwind of a tour, and I think it will be very rewarding for us.

Q. Then you feel that it was well received?

RANDY BERNARD: Yes, ma’am, I feel it was very well received. Some of our meetings that were supposed to be two hours ended up over five hours. I think we had a great response, and everybody was very welcoming to us, and very genuine in their interest in IndyCar. I think it speaks big volumes for the series and our momentum, I think.

Q. I wanted your thoughts on the New Hampshire event next August. The last time the IndyCars were in New England’s it didn’t get a very good crowd at all, and even with the NASCAR stop in New Hampshire, auto racing is down the food chain as far as New England sports are concerned. How important is it in having SMI and marketing muscle behind them to solidify open wheel racing in New England’s? This may be a better question for the track, but do you plan on bringing in the modified racing there? Your general thoughts right now.

RANDY BERNARD: First, I think Jerry Gappens is very interested in bringing modifieds, and I think there’s some technical questions that have to be asked regarding tires, to make sure they are most comparable on the same track. I know that Richmond several years back, we had a problem with modifieds. They just wanted to make sure, if that’s possible, which I’m sure it is, just get together.

And then second, on your question in regards to marketing, first I think Bruton Smith and SMI are absolutely fantastic marketers. They understand IndyCar. And I think that with the power and the momentum that IndyCar and the IZOD IndyCar Series currently have, I think that will play a positive.

And I think the third point on that would be our sponsorship participation and activation. We have signed 14 new sponsors in the past 12 months, and then we have this year, first year having IZOD as our title, I think the amount of activation that they can work the market, especially IZOD wants to work Boston, I think that you’ll see great crowds.

Q. You have mentioned the name of Bruton Smith a couple of times already and SMI, do you sense an improved level of comfort with dealing with that group, and do you think that they can take the sport in a different direction, a better direction than ISC could have?

RANDY BERNARD: I don’t want to play an SMI-better-than-ISC game, because I think, again, I’m trying to keep both doors open, because I think it’s very important. But I will say I feel very comfortable with SMI. I think that Bruton and I talked extensively, and Bruton has great ideas, and he wants to see IndyCar grow.

I think, you know, when you’re dealing with the top and you know that the top all the way down to all of the track presidents are fully working toward building IndyCar, that’s very important to us as a series.

Q. Great to see Milwaukee back on the schedule. How long has this been in the works?

RANDY BERNARD: Well, I tell you, when I first came on March 1, probably by March 15, if I had not heard from, I don’t know how many fans said that was some of the best racing and how it was such an important legacy and tradition of the sport and what a crying shame that it wasn’t on there, that’s when it really began.

We flew up here and met a couple of months back and started trying to figure out a way to do it. And when came up there, it created interest some several different promoters, and so we started negotiating with two separate promoters, and both of them are outstanding type of promoters you want to deal with. And when we finally chose the direction we wanted to go, it just made all the sense in the world. We are very optimistic about Milwaukee. We think it’s going to be a great event.

THE MODERATOR: Randy, thank you very much for joining us today. We appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule; you are quite the globetrotter these days, and we appreciate your time.

RANDY BERNARD: Thank you.

As the team travels to the City Centre Airport course in Edmonton this weekend for the Honda Indy Edmonton, the hope is if the team can avoid any early pitfalls in the race, Wheldon will finish even closer to the front of the grid.

Entering the weekend ninth in points, Wheldon looks to advance up the standings on a track where he qualified ninth and finished seventh in his first career start at the track in 2008 with Chip Ganassi Racing. He overcame a crash in practice last season in his first start at Edmonton with Panther and advanced seven positions during the race and finished in the 15th position. Panther competed with Vitor Meira in Edmonton in 2008, when the Brazilian driver had an issue with his steering and hit the tire barriers during the race before finishing in the 19th position.

Dan Wheldon

In each of the last two races, Wheldon has overcome early-race contact to drive back inside the Top Ten. At Watkins Glen the No. 4 was struck from behind by Alex Lloyd and had to be restarted by the safety crew and returned to the field in the back of the pack. Wheldon was able to drive back through the field and into the Top Five that afternoon before finishing in sixth position. Last weekend in Toronto Panther’s driver ran into the back of the car driven by E.J. Viso, had to pit for a new nose, and again had to return to the field at the end of the line. But again Wheldon was able to move back through the field, avoiding several close incidents along the way, and finish in the Top Ten – the team’s sixth Top Ten finish of the season.

This weekend’s race on Edmonton’s 14-turn, 1.96-mile airport circuit will the Panther’s 11th start of the season, and the team has earned one Top Five and four Top Ten finishes on non-oval circuits this year.

The Honda Indy Edmonton will be broadcast live on VERSUS at 5:00 p.m. (ET) with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network, www.indycar.com, XM Channel 145 and Sirius channel 211.

Dan Wheldon, No. 4 National Guard Dallara Honda

“Edmonton always bodes for great racing, and the fans here in Canada do an unbelievable job supporting the IZOD IndyCar Series. It’s always fun to race in front of fans who are so passionate. From a driver and engineering standpoint it’s an incredibly tough track, but one that I like very much.

The National Guard Panther Racing boys have done an unbelievable job each of the past two weekends and we’ve had to work incredibly hard to put ourselves into a position like we have. We’re looking to break the No. 4 National Guard car into victory lane this season, and we’re confident we’re going to have a good weekend in Edmonton.”

NEWS & NOTES:

OH CANADA!

Newman/Haas Racing has fared well in Indy car events north of the border. In total, the team has earned 15 WINS in Canada (Bourdais – Edmonton ’07, Montreal ’06, Edmonton ’05, Toronto ‘04; Servia – Montreal ’05; Junqueira – Montreal ’04; Da Matta – Toronto ’02; Mi. Andretti – Toronto ’00, Vancouver ’96, Toronto ’95, Vancouver ’92, Toronto ’92, Vancouver ’91, Toronto ’91, Toronto ’89) and 34 PODIUMS (2nd ten times: Bourdais – Mont Tremblant ’07, Edmonton ’06; Servia – Toronto ’05, Edmonton ’05; Junqueira – Vancouver ’03; Da Matta – Montreal ’02; Mi. Andretti – Vancouver ’98, Toronto ’98; Ma. Andretti – Toronto ’91; Mi. Andretti – Toronto ’90) (3rd nine times: Wilson – Edmonton ’08; Rahal – Edmonton ’07; Bourdais – Toronto ‘06; Bourdais – Vancouver ’03; Junqueira – Toronto ’03; Fittipaldi – Toronto ’02; Fittipaldi – Toronto ’99; Ma. Andretti – Vancouver ’90; Ma. Andretti – Toronto ’86.

2 WINS, 1 POLE, 6 PODIUMS IN FIVE EDMONTON EVENTS</strong

The 2010 Honda Indy Edmonton will mark the sixth Edmonton event for Newman/Haas Racing (NHR) who has competed here since 2005. NHR won the inaugural race here in 2005 when Sebastien Bourdais drove to victory from a 10th place start. Bourdais won again in 2007 from a second place start and set the fastest race lap. In total, the team has earned TWO wins (Bourdais 2007, 2005), ONE pole (Bourdais 2006) and SIX podium finishes (2nd – Bourdais 2006, Servia 2005; 3rd – Wilson 2008, Rahal 2007). Last year, Graham Rahal started fifth and finished seventh while Robert Doornbos started 10th and finished ninth for the team.

HIDEKI IS LOOKING FORWARD TO APPLYING KNOWLEDGE GAINED FROM TORONTO THIS WEEKEND

This weekend will mark Mutoh’s third IZOD IndyCar Series event here. He started 12th and finished 14th after going off course in 2009. He started 21st and retired in 27th after contact in 2008 – both with Andretti Green Racing. Hideki is hoping to improve upon his results in Edmonton this weekend. “The first year was very tough but we improved in qualifying the second year. I started 12th but during the race I made a dumb mistake after a pit stop and went on the grass and lost a lot of positions there and we finished 14th.

I’m hoping to have a much better weekend this year. We learned a couple of things in Toronto that will make the car better, especially under braking. We were able to get the car to have less lock-up under braking and I think that will help in Edmonton. We are aiming for a top-10 spot in qualifying and will basically go from there. It’s going to be a very physical, tough race. Survival will also be very important like in Toronto.”

HIDEKI ON THE PHYSICAL “MARATHON” COURSE

“The track is very bumpy and very physical,” said Mutoh. “It’s probably one of the most physical tracks of the season. I’m looking forward to improving on my results from the last two years. It’s a very tough track. It’s challenging to get the car setup right to handle the track, under braking. The bumps upset the car and make it very hard to stop. Cardio training is helpful for preparing for the Honda Indy Edmonton race. You are fighting the car the whole time, even in a straight line, because it’s very bumpy.

If we don’t get a yellow flag during the race, it’s going to be like a marathon. The steering gets very heavy so arm strength is important. It is a high G-force track so you need strong neck muscles as well. It has been very hot there as well so hydration is an issue to. I start hydrating the morning of the race and try to drink as much water as I can every 15 minutes or so. During the race I use a drink mix that E.J. Viso gave me that is very good.”

HIDEKI’S BEST OF THE SEASON SO FAR

Hideki has one top-five (Kansas – 4th) and three top-10 starts (Indy – 9th; Texas 7th) in 2010. His highest finish of the season is 12th place, three times (Texas, Watkins Glen, Toronto). He had been running in the top-four most of the event at Kansas Speedway but contact with Takuma Sato after a late race restart while trying to pass a lapped car ended his race.

NHR ON ROAD/STREET COURSES

Since being formed by Carl Haas and Paul Newman in the fall of 1982, the team has earned a total of 107 wins and 109 pole positions. 80 of their 107 wins and 90 of their 109 poles came on road and street courses. The team’s previous win on a road/street course came at Detroit when Justin Wilson drove to victory in Round 16 of 17. Their previous pole on a road/street course came on 4-4-09 when Graham Rahal became the youngest pole winner in series history in St. Pete. Nine of the 17 races on the 2010 schedule are on road/street courses.

RAHAL’S RETURN AT MID-OHIO

Graham Rahal’s return to the team in last weekend’s Honda Indy Toronto netted a fifth place finish in the Quick Trim car. His next IZOD IndyCar Series race will be the Honda Indy 200 Presented by Westfield Insurance at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on August 8. It is the home event for the New Albany, Ohio resident.

“I’m going to get myself in trouble on this one, but I’m going to tell you,” Bernard said on Saturday at the Honda Indy Toronto. “It’s very, very important for the credibility of the IndyCar Series that fans know they’re (the drivers) the best in the world. And if someone can’t maintain and compete with that, I really think that’s what we have a ladder system for.

“I’m behind our chief steward, Brian Barnhart. He has to make the assessment who is allowed on and who isn’t. I’m sure at the end of this year, Brian and I will sit down and determine what’s in the best interest of the sport.”

Dario Franchitti brought the No. 10 Air Wick Honda Dallara home in second while Scott Dixon finished 20th.

Franchitti lined-up fifth on the grid and moved up two positions on the first lap of the race. He ran in the top-three throughout most of the event – leading the field for 22 of 85 laps.

Dixon started from the sixth position and had a strong run through the beginning stages of the race. With 12 laps to go, Dixon was running in fourth when he was forced wide and made contact with the wall. The No. 9 Target machine sustained significant damage and Dixon would settle for a disappointing 20th place result.

NOTES

- This was Franchitti’s third podium finish at Toronto, having won the race in 1999 and 2009.

- Dixon extends his record of most consecutive top-10 starts to 42.

- This is the 10th podium finish for Target Chip Ganassi Racing at Toronto.

With the finishes, Franchitti remains second in the championship with 335 points – just 42 points behind leader Will Power. Dixon sits third in the championship with 299 points – 78 points out of the top spot.

Up next for Team Target is Round 11 of the IZOD IndyCar Series at the Honda Indy Edmonton Sunday, July 25 (5:00 p.m. ET, VERSUS).

TCGR Quoteboard:

Scott Dixon: “I made a bit of a bobble coming out of Turn 1. The cars in front of me were kind of messing around, they missed it a little bit. I followed a bit too hard and Ryan (Hunter-Reay) had a bit of a run. I held my typical line, moved over to the left, and he dove under. I had to go somewhere. He was just carrying way too much speed and hit the front of my car and put us in the tires. Before that, the car was pretty quick. We had troubles early on in the race but we definitely came back. Thought we could have had a shot at fourth or fifth but it didn’t work out.”

Dario Franchitti: “Our Air Wick car today was pretty good. It was all just about track position; I had to pit a lap early so Justin and Will jumped up ahead when they went a lap longer. This week we just didn’t run quite quick enough, we were fast in practice, but wasn’t quite fast enough to beat Will in the race. Just wasn’t to thank my guys because they did a great job, and here we are in second.”

Meira started 26th and finished 11th to advance to 12th in the IZOD IndyCar Series point standings.

Going into the race, A.J. Foyt and the ABC Supply team planned an alternate pit strategy knowing that it was their only chance to break into the top half of the field because it was difficult to pass on the 1.75 mile street course through Toronto’s Exhibition Park.

Starting last because of a problem with the brakes in qualifying, Meira passed row-mate Milka Duno who was off the pace on the start on the backside of the track as the field came around for the green. In trying to catch up to the field, he overcooked it going into Turn 8 and ran into the runoff area. He did a quick spin around and rejoined the field but was nearly half a lap down to the leaders on the first lap. He did catch up to the tail of the pack within 10 laps.

Meira was in 24th when the first full course yellow came out for contact between teammates Takuma Sato and Mario Moraes on lap 16. Meira, and Paul Tracy, in 18th, stayed out while everyone else pitted. Meira moved into second behind Tracy.

On the restart on lap 21, Helio Castroneves was in third and as the field approached Turn 3, Castroneves rear-ended Meira and then slid straight into the Turn 3 tire barrier while Meira continued on. That accident brought out another full course yellow.

On the restart Meira lost second to pace setters Dario Franchitti and Will Power before another caution slowed the field. Under green again, pole winner Justin Wilson passed Meira for fourth on lap 32. When the yellow came out on lap 33, Meira ducked into the pits on lap 34 to fuel up and put on the red-rimmed tires.

The team had decided to make the red alternate tire stint its shortest stint since Meira was more comfortable on the primary black-rimmed tires. The crew put in several turns of front wing for the new tires and did it under eight seconds, allowing Meira to beat Tracy, (who had been running second when he pitted), out of the pits.

Meira came out in 19th position and soldiered on until his next stop on lap 51. He was one of the first to pit in the final fuel window. That stop was under 7 seconds because he had run just half a stint and it took less time to fill the tank. When the stops cycled out, he was 17th.

Then drivers started making mistakes and either crashed into the barriers or each other. Meira advanced into ninth by lap 74 when Alex Tagliani and Tomas Sheckter brought out the sixth and final full course yellow.

On the lap 76 restart, Meira made a run on Simona DeSilvestro but the cars bottled up approaching Turn 3 forcing Meira to get hard on the brakes. He slid into DeSilvestro who stopped him from sliding off track. Unfortunately, Meira flat-spotted his tires in the incident and he had to nurse the car home with 10 laps to go. He lost a position to Wilson who was charging back through the field. Wilson had spun five laps earlier after being passed on a lap 72 restart by Will Power, who went on to win his fourth race of the year. Dan Wheldon nipped Meira with two laps to go to take away what would have been Meira’s fifth top-10 finish of the season.

“Crazy race!” Meira exclaimed afterwards, adding, “Considering where we started, we got this finish by being smart. The ABC Supply Team did a very good strategy—couldn’t be better. The pit stops were good and the car was picking up lap by lap but the incident with Simona killed my front tires. We were faster than the cars around me but on the restart, I got a good run off two and tried to make a move but it was hectic under braking to Turn 3 and everyone started to brake early. She braked early and I had nowhere to go so I had to lock it up and hope for the best. We crashed there but got away lucky because she stopped me from going straight off. But it killed my front tires and that’s how we lost our top-10 position in the last couple laps. But the team did a very good job on the pit stops and strategy.”

The ABC Supply Racing transporter will head straight to Edmonton, Canada from Toronto to prepare for next weekend’s Honda Indy Edmonton. The race will be televised live Sunday, July 25th, on Versus, with pre-race coverage starting at 5 p.m. ET.

Bertrand Baguette and Mario Romancini had scored their best starting positions during Saturday’s qualifying session and were running in their most competitive race of the season on Sunday when separate on-track incidents cost them possible top-10 finishes.

Things started to go downhill for Romancini during his first stop on lap 18. The rookie driver didn’t hit his marks in his pit box and the crew was unable to fuel him forcing him to come back in the pits the following lap, sending him down to 22nd.

Upon returning to the track, he gained a couple of spots and was 20th when he was an innocent victim of an accident not even halfway through the 85-lap event. Fellow Brazilian Mario Moraes made an impossible passing maneuver in Turn 3 – for which he would later be penalized for avoidable contact – that took Romancini out of the race. The rookie driver would later be classified in 22nd place.

Things were looking up for Baguette aboard the #36 Ice-Watch Dallara/Honda, as he was constantly moving up the field. Despite struggling a little in his second stint, the Belgian had made his way into ninth when he headed down pit lane for his second stop of the race.

Following his pit stop, Baguette was in a battle with Tomas Scheckter, the same driver that Conquest Racing had tangled with last season in Toronto. It was only a few laps later that Baguette would go a lap down after making a mistake in trying to out brake Scheckter, who was making a passing attempt on the inside.

While Baguette tried to avoid contact with the tire wall, he had to wait for the Holmatro Safety Crew to come and push him back, therefore losing a lap to the leaders and a potential top-10. He ended up in 16th.

Despite the team’s result at the Honda Indy Toronto, Conquest Racing is anxious to get back on track at Edmonton following their competitiveness this weekend.

The Honda Indy Edmonton takes place next weekend at City Centre Airport, July 23 – 25, 2010.

Bertrand Baguette

Conquest Racing Quoteboard:

16th – Bertrand Baguette, No. 36 Ice-Watch Dallara / Honda / Firestone

“We did a good first stint with the red tires and had a good start moving up to 12th. After our first pit stop we put the black Firestone tires on and it was a little bit more difficult for me, especially at the restart but I managed to keep my place. Then, Scheckter tried to pass me on the inside and I tried to brake late to make his life a little bit harder but I braked too late and that was it.

“I’m disappointed because it was my mistake and the car was really, really good. We could be ninth right now without that incident.”

Mario Romancini

22nd – Mario Romancini, No. 34 Conquest Racing Dallara / Honda / Firestone

“It’s a shame. Although we had a bad first pit stop we had a competitive racecar. We saw how many accidents there were and I was just trying to stay out of trouble. I don’t know what Mario (Moraes) was thinking because he was five car lengths behind me and we still had Wheldon between us. I don’t know what happened, I guess he missed his braking and just took me out.

“I’m really sorry for the guys. It was our best start so far and we were having a competitive weekend. We had all the chances to finish in the top ten, but this is racing and now we have to think about Edmonton and see how it goes there.”

KV Racing Technology

TORONTO (July 18, 2010) — Paul Tracy may have been the oldest driver in Sunday’s Honda Indy Toronto, but the Scarborough, Ont., Can., native continues to live up to his nickname, the “Thrill from West Hill” after the 85-lap feature in the streets at Exhibition Place.

Tracy, driving the No. 15 Honda Canada-Make A Wish-KV Racing Technology Honda/Dallara/Firestone entry, suffered through a tough qualifying run Saturday and was forced to start 24th on the 26-driver field on the 1.74-mile, 11-turn street track.

But the two-time Honda Indy Toronto winner had his fans on their feet in the middle of the main event when he held the lead.

Tracy and his Honda Canada/Motegi Wheels crew attempted a unique strategy to get the local star up into the lead and led the race for 14 laps before having to pit for fuel. Tracy was hoping to use his new fuel strategy to race with the leaders, but traffic posed a problem for him. He then stalled his car in turn three trying to make a pass. Tracy then came back from 20th to finish 13th at the checkered flag.

Tracy wore a blue and white firesuit that was signed by more than 400 Make A Wish donators. Honda Canada worked with the Make A Wish Foundation to raise tens of thousands of dollars this week in Toronto. The promotion will continue next week in Edmonton.

Young Mario Moraes, coming off an impressive fifth place at Watkins Glen two weeks ago, drove the No. 32 KV Racing Technology Honda/Dallara/Firestone car to 14th Sunday from his 20th starting position.

E.J. Viso, driver of the No. 8 PDVSA — KV Racing Technology Honda/Dallara/Firestone machine, battled most of the race for a top-ten position but was caught up in a late race incident with Alex Tagliani and Rafael Matos. Despite a little front end damage, Viso continued to finish the event in 19th place.

Takuma Sato, the rookie driver in the No. 5 Lotus — KV Racing Technology Honda/Dallara/Firestone machine, ended his race early when he and Moraes made contact in turn three on lap 16. Sato was credited with the 25th position on Sunday.

DRIVER QUOTES:

PAUL TRACY, #15 HONDA CANADA—MAKE A WISH—KV RACING TECHNOLOGY HONDA/DALLARA/FIRESTONE, Finished 13th:

“I think we could have been a top eight, but several things didn’t fall our way. We struggled the first little bit with the handling. The car seemed to come alive at the end. My pace was as fast as the leaders and I was pretty happy with that. The yellow flags hurt us in the end. We waited to pit the first time and then got some green flag laps to get a little space for our first pit stop. But the three yellow flags put us in a bad position for our strategy.

We felt we could run with the leaders if we got a break. We led some laps and got some good air time for Make A Wish, Honda Canada and Motegi Wheels. We had to deal with too much traffic after the first stop, and I tried to make a dive in turn three. The rear end got loose and I stalled. That put us back a lap. I just wish we could have qualified better. But we learned some things today and we’ll get better for Edmonton next week. This was a great week back home with all of the appearances for Make A Wish and Honda Canada. I wanted a better finish though.”

MARIO MORAES, #32 KV RACING TECHNOLOGY HONDA/DALLARA/FIRESTONE, Finished 14th:

“I think we should turn the page on this weekend. It was tough for our KV Racing team. We can look forward to the Edmonton race. I feel badly for (Takuma) Sato. I wasn’t expecting him to be in that spot on the track. He was in my blind line and it was similar to Helio (Castroneves) and PT (Paul Tracy) last year. So the two cars came together. Later in the race, the car felt pretty good but we need to get ready to improve for Edmonton. We just need to forget about this weekend now.”

E.J. VISO, #8 PDVSA – KV RACING TECHNOLOGY HONDA/DALLARA/FIRESTONE, Finished 19th:

“I got hit by (Dan) Wheldon in turn three at the start and dropped several positions. But our pace was then good and I thought our car was coming along very well. Our strategy was good too. We were getting into position to move up in the race. I was racing closely with Tag (Alex Tagliani) and (Rafael) Matos. Tag took Matos wide and I couldn’t avoid clipping Matos’ wheel. He spun and I got hit. We changed the front wing and I went back out to at least finish today. It wasn’t what we wanted but we got to the checkered flag. I thought our pace with No. 8 PDVSA car was pretty good

TAKUMA SATO, #5 LOTUS – KV RACING TECHNOLOGY HONDA/DALLARA/FIRESTONE, Finished 25th:

“It was an exciting start and I was able to battle with other drivers and gain a few places. Then I was following my teammate (Mario) Moraes. I caught up very rapidly on him out of turn two and pulled alongside of him on the back straight. We went into the braking area in turn three, but I guess he didn’t see me out there and made contact which unfortunately ended my race. It is so disappointing.”

After three challenging races, Simona and team were determined to have their true potential accurately reflected in their finishing position of this 85 lap race. Also on the line is the IndyCar Series “Rookie of the Year” honor. If Simona was to remain in the hunt, a strong finish was needed.

At the drop of the green flag, Simona maintained her 21st position and began settling in for the long race despite a hard charge from Hideki Mutoh for her position. Simona’s pace continued steady until her first pit stop on lap # 18. She reentered the race in 20th, a gain of one position. By Lap # 38, Simona moved up to the 16th position. With Toronto native Paul Tracy, a former winner of this race, closely behind her Simona held her speed and focus, keeping a comfortable gap between them. Simona pitted on lap # 51 together with a group of cars and rejoined the race in the 17th spot and once again gained positions.

Simona’s charge forward continued and she was solidly in the 14th spot by lap # 63. On the next lap Simona narrowly escaped being collected by Tracy, who tried to take away her position by out-braking her going into the turn. Now, in 12th, Simona continued her hard charge and by the last few laps she climbed to 9th where she finished for her first Top-10 finish of her Rookie season. Her best finish prior to this race was 14th at this year’s Indianapolis 500 where she earned the 2010 Indy 500 Chase Rookie of the Year honors. The 9th place finish also represents the best finish for an IndyCar rookie this year, which should put her right back in the hunt for the 2010 IndyCar Series “Rookie of the Year” honors.

Simona De Silvestro

Simona and team now move on to next weekend’s race, the Honda Edmonton Indy.

Simona De Silvestro, Driver No. 78: “It was a nice recovery from where we were when the weekend started. We struggled a lot during qualifying but ended up 9th for the race. It was a smart race and the crew did a great job in the pits. The car got progressively better and I was able to put up some fast laps and even passed a couple of people in the pits and on-track. I am really happy with the outcome. I think if we can start up front more and have just as good of a race at Edmonton, that would be awesome.”

Keith Wiggins, HVM Racing Team Principal: “It was a good recovery after a tough qualifying. The car worked well and Simona used her head and drove a great race. This is a tough track on your first visit. The stops and strategy were great and this time we delivered at the finish.”

Imran Safiulla, Team Stargate Worlds Team Principal: “This was a well-deserved result. Simona and the team did a great job and the race unfolded in our favor. We will take this positive result and build on it.”

On Sunday during the Honda Indy Toronto, the team was forced to change the front wing after contact on the first lap and bounced back for a Top Ten finish.

Wheldon is now in the ninth position in the IZOD IndyCar Series championship standings, nine points behind Justin Wilson and 42 points behind Tony Kanaan in the seventh position. The result was the team’s sixth Top Ten finish of the season, including three previous non-oval courses this year – Brazil, Long Beach and Watkins Glen.

In what was an action-packed and crash-filled race, Wheldon made contact with E.J. Viso at the start of the race and had to immediately pit for a new front wing. He returned to the field in the 26th position and with the leaders hot on his tail. Wheldon was able to fight off Wilson until a full-course caution in Turn Three for contact between KV Racing teammates Mario Moraes and Takuma Sato, giving the team the chance to move back up the grid.

Wheldon jumped into the pits on Lap 28 to top off on fuel and was one of the first teams’ to make its final stop – on Lap 52. With a total of six full-course cautions in the 85-lap race, the No. 4 car came dangerously close to a few incidents, including a Turn Three crash between Moraes (again) and Mario Romancini on Lap 32 that blocked the track entirely in front of Wheldon.

Dan was 10th on the final restart of the race, lost a spot to Wilson who was coming back through the field after spinning, but then passed former Panther driver Vitor Meira with just two laps to go to claim a 10th-place finish.

The IZOD IndyCar Series will travel next weekend to Edmonton, where the race will be broadcast live on VERSUS at 5:00 p.m. (ET) with additional coverage provided by the IMS Radio Network, www.indycar.com, XM Channel 145 and Sirius channel 211.

“It was disappointing that I made a mistake and didn’t get a great start; I was on the inside going into Turn One quite deep and then the field bottled up and I made contact. That was my fault, but then the entire National Guard Panther Racing team made a comeback and made a big improvement here compared to last year. We all just continued to get better as this weekend went on and learned a lot of things that are really going to help us moving forward.”

Matos was running 10th and closing in on ninth when he was struck from behind by Alex Tagliani in turn five sending the #2 car into the tire barrier with suspension damage.

“I was racing to finish in the top 10 and collect some points, but unfortunately Alex Tagliani took me out,” Matos said. “Marco (Andretti) and Danica (Patrick) slowed down in turn 5 and Tagliani dive bombed me. It was unfortunate because the HP car was consistent and the crew was great in the pits.”

Matos started 11th and ran in the top 12 throughout the race. He gained a position on each of his two pit stops and worked his way into the top 10 with 30 laps remaining. He was inching closer to ninth when he was spun into the tires on lap 64.

“The HP de Ferran Dragon team put together a consistent car and Rafa was running a nice race,” team co-owner and race strategist Jay Penske said. “We had a top 10 car, possibly a top 5 car, but unfortunately Tagliani tried to pass in a no pass zone and he ended our day too early. It’s very disappointing.”

Matos is now 13th in the championship standings with 186 points heading into Edmonton.

NOTES AND QUOTES, POST-RACE

HONDA INDY TORONTO

MARCO ANDRETTI, #26 TEAM VENOM ENERGY DRINK CAR

- Finished in 8th place

“It was another long day for the Venom car. We just didn’t have it today. It really came down to an attrition race and I think that has a lot to do with where we finished. But, that said, it was nice to see all four Andretti (Autosport) cars finish inside the top eight.”

RYAN HUNTER-REAY, #37 TEAM IZOD CAR

- Finished the race in 3rd place

“The IZOD guys did a great job. I don’t recall the last time I had my hands full like that. It was like qualifying the whole time out there. I don’t remember having to push that hard in a while just to keep the car between the walls. But, that’s Toronto. This place is nuts. We salvaged a good points finish today and that’s what counts. This is a great finish for Andretti Autosport. This is a great team and it’s looking good from here.”

TONY KANAAN, #11 TEAM 7-ELEVEN/ NESTLÉ PURE LIFE CAR

- Completed the race in 4th place

“It was a great race for the fans. They saw a lot of action. Fans come out here to see cars make passes and I think we had plenty of those today. For sure, it was one of the hardest races I’ve run this year. We were basically qualifying from lap one until lap 85. I would have liked to have had a little faster car, but I had a pretty decent race. I tried to battle a lot of people and had to because it was very competitive out there.”

DANICA PATRICK, #7 TEAM GoDaddy.com CAR

- Placed 6th in Toronto

“It’s a great confidence-booster not only for me, but the whole #7 GoDaddy.com team. It’s the best finish we’ve had on a street course this season. We were really happy with the way the car was performing throughout the whole race. This is a good way to end a great weekend since we head to another road course next week in Edmonton. Overall, we were strong as a team with the four of us in the top 10.”

RACE NOTES / QUOTES – Sunday, July 18, 2010

A top-five finish is a great way to start off and move forward. The guys worked really hard this weekend. When we showed up the car wasn’t close. In the race it was a lot better. It will be great going to my home race next at Mid-Ohio coming off of some momentum like this. The car was only put together Monday and left Tuesday afternoon without an engine.

For us to throw this together and be as successful as we have been in the first outing hopefully means it will only get better from here. It’s definitely comforting to come back. When I sat in the car for the first time it was really good. I was right at home just with different colors on the car. Literally, I came here and just jumped in the car. The seatbelts fit; the mirrors were right. It was almost too good. Even on a normal weekend you have to adjust something so that was great.

(On contact with Ryan Briscoe:)

“I was a lot quicker than Ryan and I had a really good run down the back straight. I got on Push to Pass right out of the corner and he just blocked me. He blocked me all the way into the braking zone and he broke on the inside and I wasn’t expecting him too so I just punted him. He was against the wall and I was waiting for him to move out. Then he hit the brakes before he ever moved. That’s what happened and I hate hitting anybody; that’s not my style. But seriously, if you’ve got a run on someone like that and they’re blocking you, that’s what’s going to happen.”

· FAST FACTS: Drove to a fifth place finish after starting 14th…Was his FOURTH race here. Started from pole in the 2006 Atlantic race but was hit by Raphael Matos on the first lap. Repaired the damaged suspension and returned to the track a few laps down, set the fastest race lap but later retired in 15th place. Started 15th in the 2007 Champ Car race as a rookie for NHR but an evasive move to avoid a pile up on Lap 1 led to him hitting the wall and a subsequent stop for a new front wing. Had to pit again for another front wing later in the race after running as high as second.

Retired in 11th place after he made contact for the third time due to a broken steering rack. Last year, he started third but was hit by second place starter Will Power, who squeezed him to the wall on the opening lap before T1. A forced stop to replace his front wing dropped him to the back but he charged through the field into seventh place. He held his position behind Patrick but flat-spotted his tires which led to losing three positions before his next stop. He tried to pass the lapped car of Ed Carpenter on the inside on a right-handed turn but the contact ended his race in 20th place after 57/85 laps…Is making his SIXTH start of the season here in Round 10.

Hideki Mutoh

Hideki Mutoh, No. 06 Formula Dream/Panasonic Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “At one point in the race I was quite happy but when we changed to option tires on the first stop, it was very hard to get up to speed on restarts so I gave up a lot of positions there. We’re going to look at our tire pressures and temperature to understand that. I was only able to pass one car. It was a very tough race but we came back in one piece which is important for the quick turnaround for Edmonton. Graham’s fifth place finish is very good news for the team. I can also check his data for his restarts and any changes he made to his car during the race which will be good information to have for our next run.”

· FAST FACTS: Drove to a 12th place finish after starting 22nd…Was his second IICS event here. He drove to an 11th place finish after qualifying 22nd with AGR in 2009…His highest IZOD IndyCar Series start on a road/street course is FIFTH at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma in 2009 and best series road/street course finish is FIFTH at Mid-Ohio and Infineon…His highest overall series start is THIRD at Nashville Speedway (oval) and best overall series finish is SECOND (Iowa 2008).

Next Up… The Honda Indy Edmonton will take place next weekend. NHR won the inaugural race in Edmonton in 2005 when Sebastien Bourdais drove to victory from a 10th place start. Bourdais won again in 2007 from a second place start and set the fastest race lap. In total, the team has earned TWO wins (Bourdais 2007, 2005), ONE pole (Bourdais 2006) and SIX podium finishes (2nd – Bourdais 2006, Oriol Servia 2005; 3rd – Justin Wilson 2008, Graham Rahal 2007).
