Post-Race Notes & Quotes

Homestead-Miami Speedway – November 19, 2011

- Denny Hamlin (fifth) was the highest finishing Toyota driver in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

- Camry drivers Brian Scott (ninth) and Joey Logano (10th) also earned top-10 finishes in the 200-lap event.

- Other Toyota drivers in the field included Joe Nemechek (16th), Michael Annett (19th), Kevin Conway (26th), Kenny Wallace (33rd) and Steve Wallace (34th).

- Four Camry drivers finished among the top-10 in the unofficial NNS driver point standings — K. Wallace (seventh), Scott (eighth), Annett (ninth), and S. Wallace (10th).

- Camry drivers earned 10 wins and five pole positions during the 2011 season. Toyota has recorded 64 victories and 54 poles since joining the series in 2007.

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 5th

How was your race?

“We struggled with our race car all day long and we had very limited practice time with the rain. Just didn’t have it today. It looked like all of the Roush cars were extremely strong. We just didn’t have the car that could hang with them in the end.”

How happy were you with your pit crew in tonight’s race?

“Yeah, this pit crew gave us a shot at it, no doubt about it. They were just an amazing pit crew. When you can gain us three spots and a clutch position like that, they deserve a lot of credit. They’re the ones who gave us a shot at it anyway.”

How are you feeling going into the Sprint Cup race on Sunday after two races so far this weekend?

“Good. I feel like we’re making strides. We just have got to keep digging. We’re a little off right now. As an organization I feel like we need to be better. Obviously, we’ve got a ways to go, but just have to thank everyone from Z- Line Designs for putting me in the car and obviously this whole 18 team for putting me in. Jim and Monica (Sexton, Z- Line Design owners) have done a lot for this program. FedEx, Toyota, Coca-Cola, Gillette and Wiley X. Couldn’t do it without everyone.”

Did you think you had a chance to beat the 60 car tonight to give Joe Gibbs Racing the owner’s championship?

“Carl (Edwards) had an extremely strong car. It looked like all of their cars were really good today. We just struggled with our Z-Line Designs Toyota. We felt like for the most part we had a fifth to seventh-place car for most of the day. It’s kind of where we ended up. The pit crew did an amazing job at least giving me a shot at it there at the end. We just couldn’t hang on. We just didn’t have the car for it today.”

Were you unhappy with the way your car handled during the race?

“I wish we had some more practice time. We were banking on that second practice. We just didn’t get enough track time with this car this weekend. We struggled. We struggled all day and just could not get the speed out of it that we needed. We ended up fifth.”

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 11 Shore Lodge Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 9th

Are you happy finishing the year with a top-10?

“I’ll take a top-10 to end the year. We fought hard ever since Daytona. We didn’t have the performance or the results that we wanted until about the middle of the year. This team — we flipped the switch. Kevin (Kidd, crew chief) and I really got on the same page and we started having good runs. We were a pretty good team the second half of the year. Definitely performed the last quarter of the year with some top-five finishes, and got a pole at Chicago. We’re going to focus really on the last part of the year and continue to build and do the things that we started doing at the middle of the year that will make us better to come back in 2012 and be even stronger.

I don’t see any reason why this team can’t make the progress through the off-season and come back with the yellow and black Dollar General car and have a team good enough to run for the championship. I feel like Kevin Kidd (crew chief) and I have a relationship that is on really good terms. We’re really communicating well. We’re going to continue to work through the off-season just as hard — if not harder — than we worked all year. Come back and be a really strong team.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 GameStop Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 10th

JOE NEMECHEK, No. 97 AM / FM Energy Pellet & Wood Stoves Toyota Camry, NEMCO Motorsports

Finishing Position: 16th

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 62 Pilot Flying J Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing

Finishing Position: 19th

How would you look back at the 2011 season?

“Someone asked me the grade that I’d give this season — and I’d probably say a C+ — just because we started off so slow and behind. We made up a lot of ground throughout the summer and fell back behind it, and then made more gains. We know there are places we can make a lot of improvement in our program — mile-and-a-half tracks especially. So, that’s something we’re really going to work on in the off-season and come back on board with Rusty Wallace Racing and the No. 62. Hopefully, some more partners will come on board and help Steven’s (Wallace) car a little bit and that way can have a strong two car effort after the off-season.”

KEVIN CONWAY, No. 87 Extenze Toyota Camry, NEMCO Motorsports

Finishing Position: 25th

KENNY WALLACE, No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Toyota Camry, RAB Racing with Brack Maggard

Finishing Position: 33rd

STEVE WALLACE, No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing

Finishing Position: 34th

(Nov. 15, 2011) – The easiest way for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) to claim its fourth consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series owner championship is for Denny Hamlin to go out and win this weekend’s Ford 300 Nationwide race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Certainly that is easier said than done, but JGR does hold an ever-so-slight advantage in the standings as the No. 18 Z-Line Designs / BJ’s Wholesale Club Toyota Camry holds a one-point margin over the No. 60 Ford team of Roush Fenway Racing entering this Saturday’s season finale.

Capturing the title this year would truly be a “team” effort as six different drivers piloted the No. 18 car at one race or another this season – Hamlin (two), Kyle Busch (20), Joe Logano (four), Kelly Bires (two), Michael McDowell (five) and Drew Herring (one).

A title this season would be similar to 2008, when the No. 20 car for JGR clinched the company’s first-ever Nationwide Series owner championship with Logano sharing the driving duties with Busch, Hamlin and former JGR driver Tony Stewart. One year later, Busch won the driver and owner titles for JGR in the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota and followed that up in 2010 to give JGR another owner title as he and Brad Coleman split the driving duties in the No. 18 machine.

A fourth consecutive Nationwide Series owner title would make JGR the only team ever to accomplish the feat as it currently shares the record with Bill Baumgardner, who won consecutive series championships from 1995 through 1997 with drivers Johnny Benson (1995) and Randy LaJoie (1996-97).

Hamlin has had success at Homestead in the past as he won the Sprint Cup Series race at the 1.5-mile oval in 2009 and has three top-three finishes in six Sprint Cup starts. He’s been solid in Nationwide Series competition, as well, having finished seventh or better three times in five starts at Homestead.

And Hamlin would love nothing more than to score a victory at Homestead to build on a short yet impressive statistical year in Nationwide Series competition. He won in May at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway and scored runner-up results in May at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway and two weeks ago at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. He also finished seventh in March at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Denny Hamlin, Driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs / BJ’s Wholesale Club NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

Overall thoughts heading into Homestead?

“If we win the race, we win the owner championship and that’s our goal. I enjoy working with Jason (Ratcliff) and the Z-Line Designs guys. They build really good racecars and, even though Jason and I haven’t worked together all that much, our communication is pretty good. We’ve had success at Homestead in the Sprint Cup Series and have run well in the past in the Nationwide Series so, hopefully, we can have a good run and get the victory and owner title for Joe Gibbs Racing.”

How much does past experience and championships play into racing for the championship?

“I think the slates are kind of wiped clean. I just don’t know, when you’re on that racetrack, you’re kind of wiped clean. I just don’t know when you’re on that racetrack running a 300- or 400-mile race, where your past accomplishments have anything to do with that particular moment. I just feel like it’s about who performs the best on that given day. It’s not about your past accomplishments.”

Jason Ratcliff, Crew Chief of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs / BJ’s Wholesale Club NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

You have worked with Denny Hamlin in the past but don’t have a lot of experience with him. What is he like to work with?

“We’ve worked together a little bit in the past. Denny reminds me a lot of Tony Stewart, even though I only worked with Tony a couple of times. He reminds me a lot of Tony, especially in practice. He doesn’t get too worked up. He just kind of goes out and gets a feel for the car, makes slow, steady progress and then, in the race, it seems like he’s always got just a little bit more in his back pocket. During the race, if you can give him what he’s asking for and make some good adjustments and get that communication going, things are pretty good. It’s hard to evaluate communication because we haven’t worked together all that much, but I thought, at Texas, it went really well. Denny is as good as anybody, especially at Homestead. We’ve seen him run well there in the Sprint Cup Series. I’m excited about it.”

What are your thoughts on the owner championship?

“I’m excited just to have the opportunity. When we started the season, when we left the shop for Daytona, we weren’t even sure the 18 car was going to be running a full schedule. We were blessed with guys like Kelly Bires, Michael McDowell and Drew Herring, who brought some sponsorship dollars with them to where we were able to run all the races. So, just to have a shot at the owner title and being ahead going into the last race is a plus. We know going in that we need to win the race. That’s going to be our focus, no different than any other weekend.”

What are the challenges in setting up for Homestead?

“Really, what makes Homestead the most challenging is the progressive banking and the way you enter the corner. It doesn’t have the dogleg in the front like a lot of the 1.5-mile ovals so, visually, it looks a lot different. But, from a set-up standpoint, it’s difficult to get the car to be tight enough to get in the corner to make the driver comfortable and then keep it turning on exit at the same time. So, that’s usually the big compromise at Homestead – making sure the car is tight enough to get in the corner without making it too tight on exit. It can be tough and that track is unique. There is no other track on the circuit I can think of that is like Homestead. We’ve been good there in the past. The challenge this week will be to make sure our entry stays good.”

Denny Hamlin’s No. 18 Z-Line Designs / BJ’s Wholesale Club Toyota Camry

Chassis No. 18-135: This car’s debut came in September at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where Kyle Busch started third and led 31 of 195 laps en route to a second-place finish. Busch finished .697 of a second behind winner Carl Edwards. The only other start for Chassis No. 18-135 was in October at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, where Busch started sixth and led 26 of 200 laps en route to a second-place finish.

(Nov. 2, 2011) – After winning the last five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships, Jimmie Johnson has carried around the nickname “Five-Time” this past season. Never a racetrack to let itself to be outdone by anyone, anytime, anywhere, Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth can lay claim to a “Five-Time” of its very own – none other than Kyle Busch.

The 26-year-old driving phenom from Las Vegas made history at Texas when he won five consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series races at the 1.5-mile oval from April 2008 through April 2010. He started on the pole twice during that incredible five-race stretch, led a whopping 810 of 1,000 possible laps, and joined Dale Earnhardt – Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway – and Jack Ingram – South Boston (Va.) Speedway – as the only drivers ever to win five straight races at the same track.

A runner-up finish to Carl Edwards last November ended Busch’s Texas win streak despite leading another race-high 107 laps, and an early exit this past April, when another competitor blew a tire and took him out of the race 12 laps before the halfway point, suddenly has the young driver looking at a two-race losing streak at the track.

No matter, as Busch, driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs / Conn’s Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), will look to get back to his winning ways at Texas during Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge. It will be Busch’s seventh consecutive race representing Jim and Monica Sexton’s California-based company – Z-Line Designs – and his first Nationwide event since his runner-up finish at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway three weeks ago. He’s had victories at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and Richmond (Va.) International Raceway during that stretch to go with another runner-up finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway and a fourth-place run on the road course at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

At stake this weekend, as the Nationwide Series is down to its final three events of 2011, is a third consecutive owner championship for crew chief Jason Ratcliff and the No. 18 Toyota team and the fourth straight Nationwide owner title for JGR overall. The No. 18 holds a slim seven-point lead over the No. 60 of Roush Fenway Racing and driver Edwards heading to Texas.

Given Busch and Ratcliff’s history together at Texas, it’s safe to say JGR’s own “Five-Time” is a good bet to get back to victory lane.

Why are you and the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota team so good at Texas?

“It’s been a team effort – Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) and the guys – all those guys at Joe Gibbs Racing – the chassis guys, the body guys, the guys in the engine shop and everybody who makes this possible. It’s just good racecars and good people. They work so hard and bring such good cars to the racetrack. It seemed like we couldn’t do anything wrong at Texas in the Nationwide Series for a long time. Being able to win five in a row there was really quite an accomplishment. Hopefully, we can start another winning streak there this weekend.”

What did it mean to be one of three drivers to win five races in a row at one track in the Nationwide Series?

“It’s neat to be in the history books in those respects. To come to a racetrack like Texas and win that many times and be that dominant, especially after struggling there so badly in my early years with the (Sprint) Cup car, it made it that much more special. It’s been a lot of fun to run there the last couple years in the Nationwide Series and be as good and dominant as we’ve been. We hopefully at least a shot at it again this weekend. I’ve been out of the Nationwide car a lot the last couple of weeks, so I’m looking forward to racing a lot this weekend and hope we can get our Z-Line Designs Camry to victory lane again at Texas.”

Jason Ratcliff, Crew Chief of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs / Conn’s NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

After winning five consecutive races at Texas, you’re on a two-race losing streak. What will it take to get back to victory lane?

“Our mile-and-a-half program has gotten better. I felt we were better at Charlotte. We had a good car at Texas the first race this year. We were battling for the lead but another car blew a tire and took us out. It’s a track we’ve had a lot of success at and it’s not like we’ve been bad the last couple of events, we just fell a little short. We’ll take what we learned at Charlotte, and hopefully end up on the winning side of things.”

There are three races left in the 2011 season. What will it take for the No. 18 team to win another owner championship?

“I’m excited about what’s going on and I feel like we have an opportunity to do it. I’m excited that we’re even in position to do it with Kyle running such a limited schedule and we’ve had some young guys in the car this year. We’ve had five different drivers in the car, so just to be in contention and be where we are, I’m really excited about that. We’ve won the last two races at Homestead and we typically run well at Phoenix. Even though it’s a different configuration, we’ll have Joey (Logano) in the car, there, and I think that’s a track he’ll do well. He tested the Cup car out there about a month ago and it seemed to be good. Kyle at Texas is always a winning combination and then Joey at Phoenix, I think we’ have a really good shot at it. After two weeks off, I think the guys are geared up and ready to close the deal.”

What do you remember about your nine years in Texas right after high school?

“I moved to Texas right out of high school and went to DeVry University (in Irving). It was my first time out on my own and I met my wife there and we were married there. It’s a neat place. I really liked it and the people in the area. Dallas/Fort Worth is just such a neat area and, if you can think of it, you can probably do it in that area. Everything is there. It’s a cool place and I’m not a big-city guy, but it’s an area where you can get the benefits of the big city without feeling like you’re in the big city. I have a lot of friends there, and my mom and dad lived there until just recently. When you live in an area that long, it feels like home. That’s one of the few tracks we go to that, when we show up there, I don’t need a map. I can tell you where to go and where to go eat. So, it’s always nice to go back there and spend some time.”

Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Z-Line Designs / Conn’s Toyota Camry

Chassis No. 18-130: This car’s debut came in June at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn where Busch started 12th and finished third. It’s next on-track appearance came in July at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta where Busch completed one qualifying lap before crashing chassis 18-130 and forcing the No. 18 team to use a back-up car during the race.

Post-Race Notes & Quotes

Bristol Motor Speedway – August 26, 2011

- Camry driver Kyle Busch won Friday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Tennessee’s Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch crossed the finish line .019 seconds ahead of his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Joey Logano marking the closest finish in Bristol history.

- Busch’s win marked his 50th career NNS race win in 219 career starts — becoming the leader in all-time wins in the series.

- Tonight’s win marked the third consecutive NNS win for Busch at the half-mile bullring.

- Busch started tonight’s race from the pole and led a total of 186 (of 250 laps). Logano led once for 12 laps.

- Michael Annett (sixth) and Brian Scott (10th) also finished in the top-10 for Toyota

- Camry drivers Steve Wallace (14th), David Reutimann (20th), Joe Nemechek (21st), Kevin Conway (29th) and Kenny Wallace (36th) were also in the field.

- Five Camry drivers are currently in the top-15 in the unofficial NNS point standings following 25 of 34 races in the 2011 season — K. Wallace (seventh), S. Wallace (eighth), Scott (ninth), Annett (10th) and Nemechek (14th).

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 1st

What did you think of the battle with Joey Logano in the closing laps?

“I don’t know where he (Joey Logano) came from to be honest with you. I don’t know where Joey came from, but he had a rocket ship there at the end. I just kept getting a little bit looser and a little bit looser the more we ran there. Had to protect the bottom there a little bit there and we just kept rolling the bottom because he wanted it. I thought that maybe the top wasgoing to win the thing — just trying to pinch him down a little bit. He used me up right here through three and four. I’m sure the fans loved. I’m sure they wanted to see him win too, anybody but Kyle (Busch).”

How does it feel to win 50 Nationwide races?

“It’s awesome. We had Mark (Martin) with us there in Loudon (N.H.) and just a phenomenal way to be able to win 49 races and tie Mark Martin and then to come here and be able to beat his record at Bristol — one of my favorite places and one of the teams’ favorite places. Certainly, an awesome race tonight. We had a great race car. Clint (Bowyer) I thought was going to get us and he was going to be the one we would have to beat. Turned out I had to race Joey (Logano), my own teammate there. Those guys had a great race car — congratulations to the GameStop guys. They had a really nice car. Can’t say enough about Toyota, Nationwide Insurance for coming along in this series with us — Gillette, Marquis Jets and the fans.
We love to come out here — we love it and we love to get to victory lane powered by NOS and going to be here all weekend.”

What were you thinking on the final lap?

“I knew his spotter (Joey Logano’s) was going to tell him, ‘use him up through three and four.’ So I planned on it and I knew he was coming. I was just hoping that the top side with the momentum would help me drag race to the start-finish line and beat him. We beat him just by a little bit so a little bit is all that matters.”

Do they need to name a grandstand after you at Bristol?

“One of these days.”

Where does breaking Mark Martin’s record rank in your accomplishments?

“There’s an awful lot of accomplishments and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where they fall. Certainly tonight’s a pretty big one. Just being able to race that hard and race against a teammate like that, knowing that he had just as good of stuff as I did. To barely beat him there at the end — if there was two more laps he probably would have got me. It was only 250 (laps) tonight so that was all we needed. Certainly, it was great to have Mark (Martin) with us in victory lane in Loudon (N.H.) and take some photos with him for tying him. Tonight was our night. Being able to beat him and get atop the all-time win list in the Nationwide Series was special for us as a team and for me as a driver and Samantha (Busch, wife) as well. This is cool and hopefully we can come back and perform again tomorrow night and do the same thing.”

Do you prefer a close battle or to run away with a win?

“I think blowing a field away provides more satisfaction because you know you just waxed their butts. For being as close as it was there with Joey (Logano) certainly we didn’t intend for it to be that close. Joey put on a nice run there at the end and came on us there a little bit to get right up to my bumper and then I wasn’t sure if I wanted to give him the inside or the outside. I kept getting a little too loose whenever I would go down to the bottom and try to run around the bottom of the race track there.

I don’t know if it was aero or him being so close to me or just me and the right rear just sliding out from under me. The middle was about the place that I could carry the most momentum and just carry the throttle and run down the straightaways a bit faster than he. I knew if it came down to a race where we were going to bang each other’s doors through three and four like it did, that getting back to the gas and just coming through turn four as hard as you could and making it back to the start-finish line, taking the momentum from the top side was going to be the way to do it.”

Was the racing between yourself and Joey Logano clean because you are teammates?

“Certainly it would have been a lot uglier had it not been a teammate. Who’s to say what would have happened, but depending on who you would have been racing with is how dirty it would have got. Certainly Joey (Logano) needed to do what he needed to do to try to win and all I can remember is going through one and two and down the backstretch and him easing up on my inside a little bit. All I can hear is Mark (Robertson), his spotter telling him right now, ‘Use him up, use him up.’ That’s all I could hear in my ears so I was planning for it the whole time and just knew if I could not let him run me too high and get me up in the trash then I could still try to turn and get back to the gas and get back to the start-finish line. I wasn’t sure how bad he was going to try to use me up, but just enough to where I would have done the same thing and he did what he needed to do and that was cool.”

JASON RATCLIFF, crew chief, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

What does being a part of Kyle Busch’s 50th career NNS win mean to you?

“It’s exciting. We knew it would eventually come. It seemed like it was a tough one. To win and especially to win your 50th like that –one of the closest finishes as you mentioned is a big deal. Too close for me. The Z-Line car was good tonight and like Kyle (Busch) said, it was good right off the truck. We worked really hard on making it turn better and then we worked really hard on making it not turn so good all night long. Never really got it. It seemed like the more I worked on it, the worse it got. Kyle did a great job and I was surprised that Joey (Logano) — of course those guys, him and Adam (Stevens, crew chief) and the 20 team, they do a nice job every week. I knew if it went green he would start running us back down. I could see his lap times start picking up there. It was a fun race and it’s good to be a part of Kyle’s 50th win obviously.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 GameStop Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 2nd

What did you think of that battle?

“So close. It’s all you can really say about that. We had a good GameStop Toyota. Kyle took off there better on tires. We were on old tires there. He was freeing up. I was catching him through the traffic and the last lap I had a good one and two, got underneath him and I did everything besides wreck him to try to pass him there and, man, it was just so close. It’s frustrating when you’re coming across the line and you’re looking at his nose compared to yours and you’re like, ‘Agh,’ like three inches. It’s frustrating, but what a day for JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing). A one-two finish coming across the line that close rubbing doors. It’s cool. I just wish I was the one celebrating on the front straightaway now.”

Did you know Kyle Busch has won the race?

“Yeah, I knew it. It was close, but I could tell. We gave it our best shot. I did everything I possibly can do. Looking back at it right now, I don’t know what else I could have done to try to pass him besides wrecking him and that ain’t the right thing to do when he’s your teammate.”

Did you know how small the margin was?

“I know. I know it was that much. I saw it. It’s a frustrating deal. It stinks to be that close and you don’t get the win. It’s two times this year. Dover and then here that we’ve been so close to win these things and we didn’t put it together. Just when he got those fresh tires there, he was able to get by me with new tires and did everything I can to keep up and once the tires kind of equaled out, I was catching him through the traffic and then I got under him a couple of times, couldn’t clear him and I knew I had one more shot there on the last lap. My one and two was really good. My car was really good through that corner. Three and four, I was never able to clear anybody. I just wasn’t as good in that end. I made sure I got to door-to-door with him and I was going to slide it down in there and do everything besides wrecking him and I went in there and slid him up the
race track, bounced off doors and all. It was fun.

It would be a- lot more fun if I was the one in victory lane. Either way, it’s really cool for JGR. A one-two finish that close, rubbing the doors across the line there — it’s really neat. Man, I wish I had a couple more. I don’t know if I could have gotten one more lap, but I think I maybe could have gotten him through one and two if I had another lap there. Good car. Guys did a good job today with things. We’ll take it. We’re building on it. We’re getting better with these cars, so it’s good.”

Did you think you could get by Kyle Busch on the final restart?

“On the restart and he (Kyle Busch) was looking up on the topside pretty early. I was like, ‘Man, he’s going to get by me here and this ain’t going to be pretty.’ I started holding him off and shoot, I got a two-car length lead on him and kind of maintained there for a little bit then he moved up and found some speed up there. He drove right by me. I saw that I was starting to maintain and then in traffic I started getting a couple cars here and there. I saw that wad of traffic coming there with about five or six to go and it was about four or five cars and I thought that if they could just hold him up enough.

A lot of times they hold up the leader and then the second-place guy usually gets it easier. That’s what happened, but our car was faster at the end for sure. Between both of that, we were definitely able to get close. I wish I had a couple more laps. I think he was still slowing up and if we kept running laps then he was going to keep getting slower and I was going to get by him eventually. Just came up a little bit short.”

Event: Food City 250 (Round 25 of 34)
Series: NASCAR Nationwide Series
Location: Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway (.533-mile oval)
Start/Finish: 1st / 1st (Running, completed 250 of 250 laps)
Winner: Kyle Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing (Toyota)

Kyle Busch held off his Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammate, Joey Logano, by just .019 of a second to win Friday night’s Food City 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

In doing so, Busch won his record-setting 50th Nationwide Series race, ending his tie with the legendary Mark Martin.

“It’s awesome,” said Busch, driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry for JGR. “To be able to win 49 races and tie Mark Martin, and then to come here and be able to beat his record at Bristol – one of my favorite places and one of the team’s favorite places – it was certainly an awesome race tonight. We had a great race car. Clint (Bowyer) was the one I thought was going to get us and he was going to be the one we would have to beat.

“Turned out I had to race Joey (Logano), my own teammate there. Those guys had a great race car. Congratulations to the GameStop guys. They had a really nice car. I can’t say enough about Z-Line Designs and Jim (president of Z-Line Designs) and Monica (wife) Sexton, as well as everyone at Toyota.”

Busch now has 12 career NASCAR victories at Bristol – five in the Sprint Cup Series, four in the Nationwide Series and three in the Camping World Truck Series. He’s won three consecutive Nationwide Series races and four of the last five Sprint Cup Series events at the .533-mile oval.

Kyle Busch - Photo Credit: John Harrelson / Getty Images for NASCAR

“I’ve always liked racing at Bristol and we’ve had a lot of success here in the last few years,” Busch said. “I love running here and Joe Gibbs Racing has always given me great equipment in the Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series, and the Kyle Busch Motorsports guys have given me great trucks in the Camping World Truck Series. It’s a great place to win and hopefully we can get another one tomorrow night.”

Busch led four times for a race-high 186 laps, but in the final 10 laps Logano began chasing him down. The duo spent the final lap side by side all the way around the high-banked half-mile oval. But when the JGR cars crossed the finish line it was Busch’s Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry just inches ahead of Logano’s machine.

“I don’t know where he (Joey Logano) came from to be honest with you,” Busch said “I don’t know where Joey came from, but he had a rocket ship there at the end. I just kept getting a little bit looser and a little bit looser the more we ran there. Had to protect the bottom there a little bit and we just kept rolling the bottom because he wanted it. I thought that maybe the top was going to win the thing and I was just trying to pinch him down a little bit. He used me up right here through (turns) three and four. I’m sure the fans loved it.”

Busch now has 102 victories across NASCAR’s top three divisions (Sprint Cup – 23; Nationwide – 50; Camping World Truck – 29). He could add to that total again this weekend with a win in Saturday’s Irwin Tools Night Race Sprint Cup Series race.

The 1-2 finish by Busch and Logano was the 14th time JGR cars have finished first and second in the Nationwide Series.

The third member of JGR, Brain Scott, driver of the No. 11 Toyota Camry, finished 10th.

Clint Bowyer finished third in the Food City 250, while Carl Edwards and Aric Almirola rounded out the top-five. Michael Annett, Jason Leffler, Elliott Sadler, Parker Kligerman and Scott comprised the remainder of the top-10.

There were five caution periods for 27 laps, with 11 drivers failing to finish the 250-lap race.

The next event on the Nationwide Series schedule is the Sept. 3 Great Clips 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The race starts at 7:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by ESPN beginning with its pre-race show at 7 p.m.

Raceway in the late going and then cruised to his 48th career Nationwide Series victory.

The win, which came via an impressive 3.677-second margin over JGR teammate Denny Hamlin, put the 26-year-old Busch just one win away from the Nationwide Series record of 49 career victories held by veteran Mark Martin. It was the fifth Nationwide Series victory of the season for Busch and his first career Nationwide Series win in eight races at Darlington, where the 52-year-old Martin visited victory lane eight times in 29 Nationwide Series starts – second only to his 11 career wins in 25 career Nationwide Series starts at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway.

“I just can’t thank Z-Line Designs enough,” said Busch from victory lane. “These guys do an awesome job for us – Jim and Monica (Sexton, Z-Line Designs president and his wife) here with us tonight, and Toyota, and Joe Gibbs Driven Racing Oil. We love racing here. It’s fun, we love it. We wouldn’t be able to do it without those guys, most importantly this team. Jason Ratcliff (crew chief) and the guys brought me an awesome racecar. They did such an awesome job for me. All we had to do was bide our time a little bit and see how it shook out.”

In the end, it all shook out just fine for Busch and the Z-Line Designs team. But, it didn’t necessarily look like it would for the lion’s share of the 147-lap race.

With the afternoon qualifying session getting washed out by rain, Busch started from the pole by virtue of his fastest lap in the morning’s two-hour practice session, per new NASCAR rules for the 2011 season. But after the green flag flew for the race, Busch and the Z-Line Designs crew saw their share of minor, but significant, struggles in the early going. Busch had trouble getting his racecar to turn during the opening run, which saw him drop quickly from first to third behind Carl Edwards and Kasey Kahne by lap 18.

After track bar and wedge adjustments during the first round of pit stops under caution on lap 27, Busch quickly drove himself into the lead when the race restarted on lap 31. He held the point by a comfortable margin until Edwards slipped past him heading into turn one on lap 54 as handling issues returned. That prompted the team to make similar adjustments to the ones it made during the first stop when Busch pitted under caution on lap 76.

Busch resumed in third place but reported a vibration from the rear of the car shortly thereafter. He dropped out of the top-three for the first time all night on lap 80, then pitted a third time on lap 91 under another caution so the crew could take its time to investigate the cause of the vibration before sending Busch on his way. With several other competitors having taken on just two tires, Busch dropped all the way back to 14th place. But he was able to immediately pick up five spots – elevating him to ninth place – when he slipped past several cars on the lap-94 restart just as a multi-car accident happened in front of him.

Busch’s Camry did not emerge unscathed as it made its way through the melee, having made contact with JGR teammate Brian Scott from behind with nowhere else to go. And he made contact several times with the legendary red-striped Darlington wall with the right side of his Camry. Nonetheless, Busch found the race was coming to him as the closing laps approached.

“It seems to be my best style here at Darlington – beat it up as much as you can and see if you can win with it,” said Busch, who finished second in last year’s Nationwide Series race at Darlington to Hamlin in a two-car Z-Line Designs entry. “We didn’t mean to. There was that one run there that we all started getting tight and it kind of came out, unexpectedly, and I drove it out into (turn) three one time and it didn’t stick and went right into the fence.

“I love coming to Darlington and it’s a really tough, treacherous place for me. We kind of proved that because the right side doesn’t look so great, but we still were able to win today. I just can’t say enough about this team. It’s cool to be here in victory lane – my first time in the Nationwide Series here in Darlington – so this feels pretty good.”

When the race restarted a final time on lap 103 after track workers cleared the aftermath of the multi-car accident, Busch was on the move. He moved from ninth to the top-five by lap 108, the top-three by lap 112, and second place by lap 116 behind race-leader Elliott Sadler. Busch chased Sadler for several laps before finally making his way by for the lead on lap 124.

“I was taking my time and being patient,” Busch said. “I got there kind of fast and, when I did, I made a move through (turns) three and four and my car was just too tight around the bottom line. It overheated the right-front tire, so I just got back in line and waited a couple more turns and was just seeing if I could get Elliott to bobble or make a mistake, and it would be easier on me to get by him. I was just waiting. He got slowed up with a lapped car off of turn two and I kind of built a run through (turns) one and two and got to his inside down the back and was able to clear him into (turn) three. It was a good race, there, for a little bit and kind of interesting. I did try once and then I just waited because there was still time and still laps left. I was trying to make sure I got by him before Denny (Hamlin) got too close. I figured if we had a three-way battle that sometimes, when there are two cars racing, it just leaves room for the third car to just blow by the both of them. We see momentum carry guys by you so easily here, sometimes.”

Once Busch got by Sadler, he methodically clicked off the final 23 laps without a threat from behind and also clicked off his first career win at “The Track Too Tough to Tame.”

“It is special because it’s so tough and so demanding,” said Busch of the mystique of Darlington Raceway. “To beat the guy we beat tonight –

Denny Hamlin – that’s pretty cool, too. We had a flawless racecar today. It was really awesome. The guys did a really good job working on it in practice this morning. We made some changes that made it better, which made it a better racecar than what Denny had today. It goes to Jason (Ratcliff) and the guys who make smart calls and put something fast underneath me every week.”

Busch now has 95 victories across NASCAR’s top three divisions (Sprint Cup – 21; Nationwide – 48; Camping World Truck – 26).

Scott, driver of the No. 11 Toyota Camry for JGR, fended up 29th after getting caught up in the multicar accident on lap 94.

Sadler finished a distant third, while Justin Allgaier and Steve Wallace rounded out the top-five. Clint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, Reed Sorensen, Jason Leffler and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., comprised the remainder of the top-10.

There were five caution periods for 28 laps, with 18 drivers failing to finish.

The next event on the Nationwide Series schedule is the May 14 5-Hour Energy Drink 200 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. The race starts at 2 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by ESPN beginning with its pre-race show at 1:30 p.m.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and Z-Line Designs had a very successful 2010 season together with Justin Wilson, who piloted the No. 22 Z-Line Designs car. The team/sponsor duo earned two podium results with second place finishes at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. They also earned a pole position together at the Honda Indy Toronto.

“I’m extremely excited to be a part of the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing team this year and have Justin Wilson represent my company. Justin is a great driver and has been our driver for three years. The entire Dreyer & Reinbold team is great to work with and have worked very hard to put together a great car. I look forward to a successful season,” commented Z-Line Designs Founder & Chief Executive Officer Jim Sexton.

The Indianapolis based crew will hit the pavement March 14th and 15th for the first open test of the season at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama. Please stay tuned for more announcements to come in the following days.

Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is entering its 12th season of full-time competition in 2011, making it one of the longest-tenured teams in IZOD IndyCar Series competition. Current Co-Owners, Dennis Reinbold and Robbie Buhl, first teamed in full-time competition at the Walt Disney World Speedway in January of 2000. With Buhl behind the wheel, the two owners tasted victory in their debut race. The 2009 IZOD IndyCar Series season-opener, on the streets of St. Petersburg, marked Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s 200th series start. DRR now has over 270 starts to tuck under its belt and has qualified a total of 27 cars for the Indianapolis 500. In its history, the team has boasted a championship list of alumni drivers. Besides Buhl, the team has run Indianapolis 500 winners, Al Unser, Jr., Buddy Lazier, and Buddy Rice, along with IZOD IndyCar Series race winner, Ryan Briscoe. The team has one of the longest lines of heritage in American open-wheel racing and the Indianapolis 500 as Dennis Reinbold’s grandfather, “Pop” Dreyer, built leading roadsters that raced at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

(Feb. 14, 2011) – It’s not exactly Lewis and Clark wondering what they would find in the vast Louisiana Purchase, but Kyle Busch and Jason Ratcliff do have some questions as they prepare for Saturday’s DRIVE4COPD 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

The driver and crew chief of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) enter the 2011 Nationwide Series season with a similar mindset Meriwether Lewis and William Clark had in 1803, when President Thomas Jefferson asked them to explore what is now the western part of the United States: “We’re not really sure what we’re getting into here, but we’ll figure it out as quickly as possible and adjust as need be.”

After back-to-back Nationwide Series owner titles for the No. 18 Toyota, Busch’s 2009 Nationwide Series driver championship and 22 race victories as a tandem in the last two years, Busch and Ratcliff head to Daytona with a mountain of uncertainty in front of them as there is a new-style Nationwide Series car, a new fueling system for the pit crew, and new pavement at Daytona for the first time since Jimmy Carter was in the White House.

Simply put, everything that was known in the past has been thrown out, and all teams and drivers are starting from scratch.

The new-style Nationwide Series car includes a wider and taller cockpit, a longer wheelbase and a new front section. It was used only four times last year – in July at Daytona, in August at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, in September at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, and in October at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

Since the new-style car was used at Daytona last July, one would think what was learned then could be applied during Saturday’s 120-lap event. But a fresh layer of asphalt was laid around the 2.5-mile oval for the first time since 1979, which completely changes the handling of cars since new pavement means much more grip than in years past.

If a new car and a new surface weren’t enough, NASCAR implemented new rules for fueling cars in 2011, eliminating the catch can position on the pit crew. Rather than having a crewmember hold a can to catch the overflowing fuel from the gas tank during a pit stop, a new gas can will not only fuel the car, but also catch the overflowing gas.

Because the catch can man often helped make track bar and wedge adjustments during pit stops, Ratcliff and other crew chiefs have had to figure out new ways to pit cars in the fastest and most efficient way possible.

So, while no team has been as successful as Busch and Ratcliff have over the last two years, it’s almost as if the reset button has been pushed and they have to start all over in order to build another dominating run.

But while Lewis and Clark took 18 months to reach the Pacific Ocean, Ratcliff, Busch and the Z-Line Designs team are hoping it won’t be that long until they find victory lane once again.

Kyle Busch, Driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

What is your level of excitement heading into 2011?

“I feel pretty good about it. I’m pretty confident with the guys and with the team and with the cars and everything. Overall, we’re all pumped up and ready to go. You sit around all winter long and you think about when the season’s going to start and it turns around and it’s here, already. You’re like, ‘I’m not ready.’ We’re excited, and with Daytona testing now in our rearview mirror, we can look forward to getting to Daytona and it’s going to be fun.”

You and the Z-Line Designs team have had so much success the past few seasons. What are your thoughts on Daytona, given all the changes during the offseason?

“Obviously, using the new car full-time will be the biggest change. We had so much success with the old car, we wouldn’t mind continuing to run that car. But, I know the guys have been working really hard to get a fleet of cars built up, so we’re ready for the season. Daytona will be really interesting with the new car, the new pavement and the new fueling system. There are just a lot of unknowns, so it should be a wide-open race. I know the guys will prepare a great Z-Line Designs Camry and we’ll see what we can do.”

How have you adapted to being married?

“Married life is excellent. Samantha (Busch, wife) and I – we’ve had a great time, thus far. It’s been good. We had a chance to go to the Super Bowl, which was a lot of fun. So, it’s been good.”

Can you talk about what Z-Line Designs, Jim Sexton (Z-Line president) and his wife Monica have meant to you and your career?

“They’ve been huge supporters of my career. We’ve won 16 races together and two championships and they were there for both championships and most of the race victories. They’re huge fans of mine but, more importantly, they’re great friends to Samantha and me. You can’t really ask much more than that from a sponsor. We’ve done commercials for them, which has been great. This is our fourth year together and I hope there are many more to come.”

What benefit do you get from running NASCAR Nationwide and Truck Series races?

“I think running the trucks and running the Nationwide Series gives you that extra experience on the racetrack. You still have special traits with different tire compounds that Goodyear comes out with, and with all the vehicles now having splitters and all having limited front-end travel – all the concepts and ideas are sort of the same. The level of information that’s being put in the cookie jar is a lot more than just running with one team. Your thought processes are a bit different and your experience level just gains a lot faster.”

Jason Ratcliff, Crew Chief of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

With the addition of a third JGR Nationwide Series team and having to build new-style Nationwide Series cars, has this off-season been busier than others?

“It’s been slammed. With the addition of the (No.) 11 team, it’s building that many more cars. And that’s not a negative. It just makes for more work. You have to rebuild your whole fleet. Last year, we built three (new-style) cars per team and, after four races, we learned enough that I don’t want to say those cars are obsolete, but they are no longer what you think you need, so you go back and rebuild. So, we basically started from scratch when we got back from Homestead. It’s been crazy.

When it’s all said and done, we’re shooting to have 10 cars per team and, right now, the guys are working their tails off on the fifth car (per team), so we’ve been working like crazy all year and we’re only halfway on our inventory. It’s been a madhouse. We’re hoping we can get through Daytona and the West Coast portion of the schedule without wrinkling any fenders.”

Any time you damage racecars, it’s a bad thing. But how important is it to get through the first few races unscathed, given that the team is still building up the fleet?

“It’ll be big. The good thing about having three teams is that you’d like to think if you’re going to have some problems, it’d only be with one team and not the other teams. So, if something happens, you’ve got a little wiggle room to pull from another team. That’s the good thing about a multi-car team is that you’ve got some wiggle room to pull from. But, our record for Joe Gibbs Racing at Las Vegas isn’t great.

We’ve killed probably four race cars at Vegas in the last three years. You take them home and you just have to chop them up and throw them away, they’re so bad. You always know that is out there and that can happen. We do get a week off after Vegas before Bristol, but it’s not like we’re caught up, either. So, if any of the teams – the 11, the 18 or the 20 – have any struggles at Phoenix or Vegas, it could put us in a pinch. Right now, our guys are working 10-hour days during the week and then another eight to nine hours on Saturdays, so it’s not like you’ve got much more time in the week to produce new racecars.”

How has your team adjusted to the new fueling rules, which eliminated the catch can man?

“It’s different. It’s slower. It’s a lot slower. So, then you think about what you can do to pick up time on pit road. And you run into some other obstacles, which everyone is going to because it’s a new system. You never really know what might bite you until you get into race conditions. But I feel like the guys have done their homework enough in practice that they’re going to be as prepared as the next guy.

But I’m concerned about it, at the same time, because you don’t have any history with this system. So you don’t really know what can happen. I remember when they started this in the Truck Series and they had to figure it out and they had some bugs. I think the system has improved just because the Truck Series used it for a season. So, that allowed everyone to look at the system and revise it a little bit. I think we’ll be in decent shape. We’ll be as good as anybody and, if something happens, it won’t be one of those things you’ll have been able to duplicate at the shop.”

There is a new-style car, a new fueling system and new pavement at Daytona. Have you ever been in a situation where there are so many unknowns going into a season?

“Not really. It’s almost like you’re starting over with everything. We had a few races last year with the new car and that’s a huge help. But, going to Daytona, none of your old notes are going to work because it’s a new car, the track has been paved, and then you throw the fuel system on top of that, you just have so many new things you have to look at. I’m more concerned about Phoenix and Vegas than I am Daytona.

Just because those are the types of tracks we haven’t been at, yet (with the new car). Vegas is somewhat similar to Charlotte and I think we’ll be OK, there, because we ran the new car at Charlotte last year. Phoenix is a different animal. You’re going to go out there and the schedule is pretty tight, so it’s not like you have a lot of extra time to work on your car. The first three races, I think it’s going to come down to the team that can react the quickest and is prepared for the unknown. You have to be overly prepared because you don’t know what to expect. At least the (Sprint) Cup guys got to go to Daytona and I haven’t heard any horror stories, so I think we’ll be in decent shape for that one.”

Chassis No. 18-102: This is a brand new racecar that has only been tested in the wind tunnel. The DRIVE4COPD 300 will mark its first race of any kind.

FOR THE FORD 300 NASCAR NATIONWIDE SERIES RACE

AT HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2010

Kyle Busch clinched the WIX Filters Lap Leader Award in tonight’s Ford 300. Busch earned a $20,000 cash prize from WIX Filters for his efforts.

· Busch led seven times for 153 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in tonight’s Ford 300. He led 34 times in 28 different races for a total of 2,229 laps. In 144 superspeedway races Busch has led 7,127 laps and a grand total of 9,466 laps in 202 career starts.

· Busch won tonight’s race, crossing the finish line .850 seconds ahead of second-place Kevin Harvick. He won for a series record 13th time this season racked up his 22nd top-five finish. Busch finished in the top-10 in 25 of 29 starts this season. He scored his second career victory at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

· UNOFFICIALLY Busch finished third in the series championship standings, despite not competing in six races.

· Busch captured WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors for the 18th time this season.

· BUSCH QUOTES: “It started off this weekend with a great team. Jason [Ratcliff, crew chief] and the guys prepared a great race car back at the shop along with all the chassis guys and body hangers and the engine group too that gave us a race car to come out here to put it up front. Qualified second to Joey [Logano] there and we came out here and we were able to prevail and get the job done. You know it was a heck of race there with Harvick there towards the end and battling back and forth with him a little bit I thought I messed up and gave the win away there for a minute but we were able to rally back on the next restart and get back by him and getting there to the checkered flag first. Really good day for us all around.

Can’t thank Jim and Monica Sexton enough from Z Line Designs and everybody that’s been fortunate enough to be a part of this program and help us win 30, 40 something races here in the last three years since 2008 of me coming aboard the Joe Gibbs Racing team. It wouldn’t be possible without these guys support to my right and Brad [Coleman] doing the job that he did as well this year in the races that I wasn’t able to attend and keeping us up there in the points so I could go out there and be where we are tonight, at least get Joe where he is tonight [smile].”

Post-Race Notes & Quotes

Homestead-Miami Speedway – November 20, 2010

- Kyle Busch earned his 13th win of the season in Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Homestead-
Miami Speedway.

- Busch’s win enabled Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) to earn its third straight NNS owner’s championship — the second
consecutive title for the No. 18 Camry. The No. 20 Camry earned the title in 2008.

- Busch led seven times for a race-high 153 laps (of 200) at the 1.5-mile oval.

- Camry drivers earned 17 series victories in 2010 and have won 54 races since the manufacturer joined the series in 2007.
Joey Logano (seventh), Brendan Gaughan (eighth) and Jason Leffler (10th) also earned top-10 results for Toyota.

- Other Camry drivers in the field included Martin Truex Jr. (12th), Reed Sorenson (14th), Steve Wallace (15th), David
Reutimann (16th), Cole Whitt (17th), Brian Scott (18th), Michael Annett (24th), Kasey Kahne (38th) and Kevin Lepage
(41st).

- Eight Toyota drivers ended the season in the top-15 in the unofficial NNS driver points, including Busch (third), Logano
(eighth), Leffler (ninth), Wallace (10th), Gaughan (11th), Sorenson (12th), Annett (13th) and Scott (14th).

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 1st

Can you describe what it means to you to earn your second win and owner’s championship this weekend at Homestead?

“You don’t right now. You just come out here and enjoy it. All of these guys from Joe Gibbs Racing, everybody from Z-Line Designs — Jim and Monica (Sexton, Z-Line Design owners) are here to help us celebrate. This Toyota was fast, man. I just can’t thank these guys enough. They do a great job at Joe Gibbs Racing — the chassis shop, the body shop, everybody. They put it all together for us in these last three seasons. It’s a shame to see this car go, but we’ve got a new priority here next year. It will be fun. It will be a new challenge for us. I can’t thank NOS Energy Drink enough, Combos, M&M’s, Interstate Batteries, Nationwide Insurance for a great series. This has been so much fun. It’s been cool to come out here and enjoy and celebrate with all of these guys. They deserve to celebrate as much as anybody. I can’t thank the fans enough of course.”

What happened on the last pass for the lead?

“It was a battle. Kevin (Harvick) was a great race tonight and he had a great race car. I just can’t thank these guys at Joe Gibbs Racing enough — the engine shop, the chassis, bodies, everybody that builds these race cars. All of the guys that are standing here behind me that come out here and pit these things. They do a wonderful job and they deserve to celebrate and they deserve to celebrate long and hard for this one. Being the owner’s champion is really special to us. That’s what we set out to do at the beginning of the year. A great race out there. (Kevin) Harvick was strong and I just got a good restart there on that last one. I had to work for it, it wasn’t easy. I started getting tight there at the end of the race, but I had just enough there to beat him out.”

Would you have thought you would win 13 races in 2010 at the beginning of this year?

“I would’ve said I wish. I thought eight or nine (wins) is doable, but 13 that’s really hard to do. I couldn’t do it without all of these guys. I’m going to be selfish and say that I wish we had 15, you know, because I feel that we could’ve won that many this year. We’ve had a few taken away from us, but it wasn’t due to lack of effort. These guys gave it their all. Now we can go to the banquet on Monday night and have a really good party with all of us on stage too.”

Do you think you win tomorrow’s Cup race and sweep all three races this weekend?

“The Cup car is pretty good. I like it. Dave (Rogers, crew chief) has done a really nice job. It’s just going to be all about
patience and coming through the heat of the day. We’re going to have a lot of sun out there tomorrow and it’s going to be hot and it’s going to be slick so you’ve got to have a car that definitely handles well at the beginning of the run, but one that definitely handles well at the end of the run as well.”

J.D. GIBBS, president, Joe Gibbs Racing

How much does it mean to your organization to win another owner’s championship?

“It’s a huge deal for us. You kind of look back, and we started it in the first year with Bobby Labonte. All we learned over the years was what not to do and what to do. Watching Kyle (Busch) and Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) and those guys coming together, and Brad (Coleman) in there as well, it’s just a blessing for us.”

JOE GIBBS, team owner, Joe Gibbs Racing

How exciting is this for your organization to win its third straight owner’s championship?

“We’re thrilled. I think that’s been well documented. Our struggles the first years in Nationwide Series and how hard it was for us. I really appreciate Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief), the team here, Brad (Coleman) — Safeway Driving Schools. I also want to say thanks to Combos, Interstate Batteries and NOS. It’s really hard to put together a team like that to allow us to race in the Nationwide Series. But with Kyle (Busch), we really appreciate it. We’re thrilled to be a part of it. J.D. (Gibbs, Joe Gibbs Racing president) works mostly on the Nationwide side, and I take the credit for it. In any case, it’s a thrill for us and I appreciate it. One thing I left out front, too, is Toyota. I really want to make sure that the championship there and what they’ve done for us, we couldn’t be up here if it wasn’t for Toyota. I really appreciate them.”

JASON RATCLIFF, crew chief, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

How exciting is it for your team to win another owner’s championship and end the season with a win?

“It was obviously a tremendous blessing for us to have the opportunity to be close to winning another owner’s championship with Kyle (Busch) and Brad (Coleman) this year in the car, both of them did an outstanding job. Last week, we felt like we had a pretty good — as far as the point’s lead goes last week — we had some trouble at Phoenix, kind of like we did last year. So it’s very gratifying to come into Homestead and have the kind of run that we had tonight. We were able to close the deal. The guys again did a great job on pit road. The guys, the mechanics that turned the wrench on this car, they did a great job preparing it at the shop. Lot of effort went into this car this week, lot of studying, lot of notes, and it paid off for us in the end.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 20 GameStop / MASTIFF Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

Finishing Position: 7th

How was your race today?

“We ran eighth or ninth all day. The car went from too loose and can’t drive the thing to being so tight that you can’t go
anywhere. We were at both ends of the spectrum today and didn’t go anywhere. It’s disappointing to end the season that way.”

BRENDAN GAUGHAN, No. 62 Aspen Dental Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing

Finishing Position: 8th

JASON LEFFLER, No. 10 ABF U-Pack Moving Toyota Camry, Braun Racing

Finishing Position: 10th

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Diamond Waltrip Racing

Finishing Position: 12th

REED SORENSON, No. 32 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Braun Racing

Finishing Position: 14th

STEVE WALLACE, No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing

Finishing Position: 15th

DAVID REUTIMANN, No. 11 Rexall / Dollar General Toyota Camry, Braun Racing

Finishing Position: 16th

COLE WHITT, No. 84 Red Bull Toyota Camry, Red Bull Racing Team

Finishing Position: 17th

BRIAN SCOTT, No. 09 Shore Lodge Toyota Camry, RAB Racing

Finishing Position: 18th

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 15 Germain.com Toyota Camry, Germain Racing

Finishing Position: 24th

KASEY KAHNE, No. 38 Great Clips Toyota Camry, Braun Racing

Finishing Position: 38th

What happened to take you out of the race?

“It looks like (Justin) Allgaier just lost it to me. I’ve been in a couple of his wrecks this year as far as the Nationwide side goes. I passed the 99 (Martin Truex Jr.) on entry and I was passing the 22 (Brad Keselowski) and I was on the inside so I went left. I wish I would’ve went right — I probably could’ve missed it. It was just a bad decision or the track was kind of blocked out. Our Great Clips car was fast and I think we were going forward. It’s just kind of discouraging that our race is over.”

(Photo Credit: John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR)

SAN RAMON, Calif., (Sept. 9, 2010) – Kyle Busch scored a hit phrase earlier this year when he uttered the famous line, “Who doesn’t like kittens, bunnies and little baby seals?” during the well-known Toyota TV commercials that features the NASCAR superstar sitting in a pink firesuit next to a pink racecar.

The 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion is again teaming up with animals, but this time in two recently-released national commercials for Z-Line Designs, one of the leading designers and import manufacturer of home office, home entertainment furniture and office seating.

The spots ask viewers if they can resist buying Z-Line Designs furniture, even with Busch and his fiancée, Samantha Sarcinella, encouraging them to do so. At the end of one commercial, the viewer is asked if they can resist buying furniture even with adorable puppies crawling all over it, while the other commercial asks them if they can resist buying furniture with ponies walking around the items.

The commercials are part of a major advertising campaign for Z-Line Designs, which has sponsored Busch and Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) in the Nationwide Series since 2007. Together, Z-Line Designs, JGR and Busch have won 15 Nationwide Series races.

“Z-Line’s national television advertising campaign, featuring more than 4,000 spots nationwide, has been well received by both our retail partners and the consumer,” said Jim Sexton, founder and CEO of Z-Line Designs. “By featuring our commercials on multiple networks we have been able to reach a greater audience. Kyle and Samantha provided an extra personal touch tying our racing promotions into the commercials.”

The spots have aired in the some of the biggest markets in the country during NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series events, as well as IndyCar Series races. The commercials have also been shown on HGTV, Discovery, USA, TNT, FX, CNN, A&E and BRAVO in select markets.

“Z-Line Designs and Jim and Monica Sexton have been huge supporters of my career,” Busch said. “Beyond that, Jim and Monica have become great friends to Samantha and I, and it was awesome for them to ask us to be a part of their ad campaign. It was really cool for me to have Samantha be a part of the commercials and we had a lot of fun shooting them.”

This week at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway, Busch’s Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry will have a bit of a different look, as the pink racecar featured in the Toyota commercial will move from the small screen to the .75-mile oval. There, Busch will don a pink firesuit and drive the overwhelmingly pink No. 18 Toyota Kimmy / Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry in the Richmond 250 Nationwide Series race.

Z-Line Designs happily agreed to trade its normal red-and-black logos for pink-and-purple on Busch’s car, while the standard red-and-black Z-Line Designs scheme will be featured on Denny Hamlin’s No. 20 Toyota Camry for JGR.

Busch will drive the regular Z-Line Designs car three more times in 2010 – Oct. 16 at Charlotte (N.C) Motor Speedway, Nov. 7 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, and in the Nov. 20 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Date: Aug. 20, 2010

Event: Food City 250 (Round 24 of 35)

Series: NASCAR Nationwide Series

Location: Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway (.533-mile oval)

Start / Finish: 3rd / 1st (Running, completed 250 of 250 laps)

Winner: Kyle Busch of Joe Gibbs Racing (Toyota)

Kyle Busch poses for the crowd at Bristol Motor Speedway after winning the Food City 250, his 10th victory of the season. - Photo Credit: Todd Warshaw / Getty Images

The beating and banging that has epitomized racing at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway is back, and the man who brought it back was none other than Kyle Busch. The driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) scored his 10th NASCAR Nationwide Series win of the season when he took the checkered flag in Friday night’s Food City 250 after bumping Brad Keselowski out of the way on lap 219 of the 250-lap race.

The two combatants were the class of the field, with Keselowski leading three times for 62 laps and Busch leading three times for a race-high 116 laps. Keselowski held the point from lap 162 to 218, but after doggedly pursuing the championship leader, Busch finally made his way past Keselowski in between turns one and two. But as soon as Busch’s No. 18 Z-Line Designs machine got in front of Keselowski on the backstretch, the nose of Keselowski’s Dodge nudged the rear bumper of Busch’s Toyota, sending Busch scraping along the wall. Busch never let off the throttle and quickly snuck in behind Keselowski as they entered turn three, and just before turn four, Busch reached Keselowski and nosed his Toyota into the back of Keselowski, sending him spinning, with the rear of Keselowski’s Dodge contacting the outside wall.

Busch motored on, and with the exception of two late-race restarts where he was briefly challenged by Elliott Sadler, Busch checked out to collect his second Nationwide Series win at Bristol.

“I raced and raced and raced him (Keselowski), I don’t know for 12, 15 laps, and my Z-Line Designs Camry was pretty awesome tonight,” said Busch, who is two for two this week at Bristol, as he won Wednesday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the .533-mile oval and has a chance to go three for three if he scores a win in Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. “I thought I had him cleared on the back and I moved up in front of him, and instead of him doing an Earnhardt crossover move he decided that he would just run into the back of me and put me in the fence. So, that’s Brad Keselowski. So, you know, I went down into the next corner and dumped him. He does it to everybody else. Why can’t I do it to him?”

<img src="http://www.catchfence.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/2010-Bristol-Aug-NNS-Kyle-Busch-Victory-Lane.jpg" alt="Kyle Busch celebrates his NASCAR Nationwide Series Food City 250 victory at Bristol Motor Speedway two days after winning the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at the track. Photo Credit: John Harrelson / Getty Images for NASCAR

The victory was Busch’s 10th Nationwide Series win this season, tying him with the mark set by Sam Ard during his championship run in 1983 and tied by Busch in 2008. It was also Busch’s 40th career Nationwide Series victory, inching him ever closer to the all-time Nationwide Series win total of 48 set by Mark Martin.

“It was a pretty good race for us,” Busch said. “We had trouble in practice trying to get the car exactly the way I wanted it. We were close, but Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) worked really hard with the guys to try and make sure that we had a winning car here tonight. We were swinging things at it all day. We came up with a good combination there for the race. It was a little too loose all night, but I kept trying to move my line around and try to find something that would work for me, and I was able to do that a little bit. Had good pit stops and just being able to keep our track position all night really helped us so we didn’t have to pass too much. Just getting up there at the end and being able to set sail when it mattered most and get to victory lane.

“I can’t thank Z-Line Designs enough and Jim and Monica Sexton – they’re awesome. It’s fun to come over here and race. I enjoy it, and of course it’s cool to put this 18 car in victory lane.”

Busch’s 116 laps led marked the 19th race where he’s led at least one lap this season. His 2010 laps-led tally stands at an impressive 1,492. The only race where he’s failed to lead a lap came last Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, where he still finished third. Busch broke the series record for laps led in June at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, where he led six times for a race-high 125 laps en route to the win. The previous record-holder was Martin with 8,082 laps led. With his win at Bristol, Busch pushed his laps-led total to 8,729.

Chassis No. 1861 – the car Busch used in Friday night’s win – is responsible for 1,049 of those laps. It is a workhorse that debuted in 2007 and in 16 career starts has notched eight victories – three at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., two at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and one each at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Dover (Del.) International Speedway and Bristol.

“This car has won everywhere. This baby, it’s an awesome race car,” said Busch about the racecar that has won at every style of track except a road course and a restrictor-plate track.

Despite not running the full Nationwide Series schedule, Busch remained third in the championship standings, 434 points behind Keselowski. Busch sat out a string of standalone events in June at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, Kentucky Speedway in Sparta and Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., as well as the series’ July stop at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill.

While Busch is not running the full Nationwide Series schedule, JGR’s No. 18 Toyota is competing for the owner’s title. It maintained its spot atop the standings, increasing its advantage to 73 points over the No. 22 car of Penske Racing. JGR has won the past two Nationwide Series owner’s championships.

Jason Leffler finished .798 of a second behind Busch in the runner-up spot, while Sadler, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Carl Edwards rounded-out the top-five. Trevor Bayne finished sixth, with Clint Bowyer, Reed Sorenson, Parker Kligerman and Busch’s JGR teammate Joey Logano comprising the remainder of the top-10.

There were eight caution periods for 48 laps, with 11 drivers failing to finish.

The next event on the Nationwide Series schedule is the Aug. 29 NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course in Montreal. Brad Coleman will pilot the No. 18 Toyota while Busch takes the weekend off. The race starts at 2:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by ESPN beginning with its pre-race show at 2 p.m.

“New Car Test”

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 12, 2010) – It’s no secret that Kyle Busch has been quite successful in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, as the Las Vegas native has 39 wins and 121 top-10 finishes in 191 career starts.

While he’ll make start 192 in this week’s CARFAX 250 Nationwide Series event at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, it’s safe to say that the 125-lap race will be a little different than his other 191 starts.

Busch will pilot the No. 18 Z-Line Designs / OfficeMax Toyota Camry at Michigan, but the car will be the new version of the Nationwide Series car. The updated car has, among other things, a wider and taller cockpit, a longer wheelbase and a new front section consisting of a splitter, rather than a valance.

All this adds up to a new challenge for Busch, who has certainly mastered the old-style car, given that he has won at least nine races each year since 2008. He has driven the new car in competition only once, during the July Nationwide Series event at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, where he finished seventh. However, Daytona is a restrictor-plate racetrack where cars rely on the draft in order to gain top speed.

Many observers feel Michigan will be the first true test of the updated car given that the 2-mile oval has similar characteristics to many 1.5-mile and 2-mile intermediate tracks at which the series competes.

While learning about the new car, Busch will also be aiming for the record books. With nine victories already in 2010, Busch is just one win away from tying the Nationwide Series record of 10 wins in a season that he shares with the legendary Sam Ard. Busch accomplished the feat in 2008, while Ard was the first to reach the 10-win mark during his championship season in 1983.

A victory at Michigan would also put Busch just eight victories behind all-time Nationwide Series race-win leader Mark Martin, whose record currently stands at 48 victories.

Amazingly, despite not running the full Nationwide Series schedule, Busch is third in the championship standings, 473 points behind series leader Brad Keselowski.

It maintained its spot atop the standings, and it now holds a 34-point advantage over the No. 22 car of Penske Racing. JGR has won the past two Nationwide Series owner’s championships.

Kyle Busch, No. 18 Z-Line Designs / OfficeMax NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

What are your overall thoughts on the Nationwide Series and the new cars?

“I think the Nationwide Series is a great series. It always has been, even when it was the Busch Series and, before that, when it was Grand National. It’s been a good learning series for young guys like myself who came in and came up through the ranks and got their feet wet, and then on to the Cup level. A lot of (Sprint) Cup guys still run it, like myself, to get the time on the racetrack, get the time in the cars, see what the tires do – just different experiences. Right now, it’s still a really good series.

I think, with the cars and the identity it’s getting with the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang, I think it’s really going to be cool to see those cars. Our Camry looks awesome, and the Chevrolet looks good. The race at Daytona was different because it was a restrictor-plate race. It will be interesting to see how it handles this week at Michigan.”

Overall thoughts on Michigan?

“It’s just a fun place to race. It’s wide-open racing and you can run from top to bottom. The biggest thing is just trying to get grip there. Some guys are able to get it, other guys can’t. You can get it for maybe five laps, and then you’re just out to lunch. The biggest thing is just trying to make your car comfortable and make it last throughout a whole tire run and, of course, make it fast, too. And the wide racetrack is good.

That’s what makes Michigan so exciting and so fun. That’s the biggest deal about it. For me, coming to Michigan, I tend to run well there, for whatever reason, and the biggest deal is trying to finish and finish up front.”

Jason Ratcliff, crew chief, No. 18 Z-Line Designs / OfficeMax NASCAR Nationwide Series Toyota Camry:

What has been the biggest challenge for you and the Z-Line Designs team in getting ready to use the new car at Michigan?

“I think the biggest challenge, for us, is that the rules package is just so much different. The concepts are the same. You’re still coil-binding, but the dimensions of the car – the splitter versus the valence – the difference in that is probably the biggest challenge for us.

Even though there are a lot of things that are the same and similar to the current car, just the way you apply it is going to be so much different. So, it’s going to take us a little while to get used to that. Other than that, it hasn’t been too bad. There’s just a lot of time involved in it.”

How beneficial is the Thursday test day at Michigan with the new car?

“I’m not saying you couldn’t do without it, but I’m not sure how the race would be without that test day. No one has ever been to Michigan with one of these cars with this rules package. So, even though we went to Daytona a month ago, you can apply some of that, but at Michigan, it’s a different ballgame.”

What are some of the differences between the old car and the new car that the average fan may not know about?

“Aerodynamically, it’s quite a bit different. Especially at the big tracks, that is probably what the driver feels the most. The feedback he gets from the car, aerodynamically, and how it reacts in traffic is quite a bit different. I think the second thing is the splitter. With the valence, you’ve got a lot more room to work. You don’t have a definitive target you have hit. You don’t have that hard splitter that you have to hit at five inches.

Right now, if you want to go six, you can. If you want to go six-and-a-half, you can. When you’re trying to hit that target, sometimes, it can make the front end of these cars less compliant, which is tough to drive, I would think. A big, smooth racetrack, it’s probably fine. But at these rough racetracks, or at some rough racetracks, it can be a bear to try to fight your way through that. And then, on top of that, you get a different aerodynamic feel.”

The Car

Chassis No. 18104: This is a new car that has not been used before.

Post-Race Notes & Quotes

Iowa Speedway – July 31, 2010

- Kyle Busch brought home his ninth victory of the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) season in his 17th series start when he drove his Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Camry to victory lane in Saturday night’s event at Iowa Speedway.

- Busch led four times for 209 (of 250) laps at the 0.875-mile Iowa oval to take his 39th career NNS triumph.
Camry drivers Jason Leffler (third), Trevor Bayne (fifth), Steve Wallace (sixth), Des Moines native Michael Annett (seventh) and Matt DiBenedetto (ninth) also earned top-10 finishes for Toyota at Iowa.

- Bayne, who led twice for 21 laps, captured his third straight pole in the series to become the first driver in 18 years to score three consecutive poles since Jeff Gordon accomplished the feat in 1992. The 19-year-old also became the youngest driver to earn three straight poles — he previously was the top qualifier at Gateway (7-17-10) and O’Reilly Raceway Park (7-25-09).

- Camry drivers Tayler Malsam (27th), Brian Scott (30th), Brendan Gaughan (31st), Reed Sorenson (36th) and Kevin Lepage (37th) were also in the field.

- Toyota drivers Busch (third), Wallace (seventh), Bayne (eighth), Gaughan (ninth), Leffler (10th), Annett (11th), Scott (12th), Sorenson (13th) and Joey Logano (15th) are in the top-15 in the unofficial NNS point standings after 21 of 35 races.

Finishing Position: 1st

How excited are you to win this race after not being able to practice in your car today?

“It’s pretty phenomenal the race cars these guys put out. This is my 54th win in a Toyota — can you believe that? There’s been an awful lot of them. I’m real proud of those guys and I can’t thank them enough. Z-Line Designs — Jim and Monica (Sexton, owners), of course NOS Energy Drink, Combos, Marquis Jets, Gillette, the fans, man — what an awesome turnout this week. It was phenomenal. It was really, really cool.”

How impressed were you with the adjustments Jason Ratcliff made tonight to give you a race-winning car?

“On that restart there when Trevor (Bayne) and I were side by side it was probably like the third or fourth one and I was able to get by the 99 (Trevor Bayne) and kind of check out a little bit. I was like, ‘Ah, well the adjustments we just made worked, that was pretty good.’ I’m real proud of Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) thinking about how to make this car better. I didn’t think we had it. It was the same feel as we had last year and I was like, ‘Man, it’s just not coming off the corner the way I need it to be.’

And we were able to dial it in and get it to where we needed it. So, I can’t thank these guys enough. Jason, Brad Coleman (practice driver) did a great job for me — the pit crew gave me awesome stops all night. I was worried there with (Kevin) Harvick taking two tires. I was like, ‘Man, same thing as last year. I’m going to get beat by two.’ But, I got into my rhythm and I got going and just started clicking laps and got up to Harvick there and beat him. So, hopefully he waits for me so I can get my ride home.”

How special is it for you that this is your 75th NASCAR victory tonight?

“It’s pretty big. Man, it’s a lot of them, but it’s not quite where I want to be. The big number is 200 so hopefully I can get there. We’re 25 away from cracking halfway there and I might be able to get it here in the next two years so that would be pretty cool.”

How was your run?

“Starting out it was just a little edgy with the sun still on the track and the track real hot it was a little slick. Trevor (Bayne) was really good there in the beginning. Our car was just a little bit too tight. Late center and exit of the turns I couldn’t get it to where I could get the power down the way I wanted. The sun started going down, the track started cooling off and we started freeing up the car and the car was really good. I can’t say enough about Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) and these guys just giving me an awesome race car.

Coming out here with Z-Line Designs and NOS Energy Drink, Combos, all the people that make this program special. Jason and Brad Coleman did a good job working on the thing for me, getting it to where it was a race-winning car tonight. We were fast last year but came up a little bit short, but this year was really good being able to lead that many laps and run upfront like that. (Kevin) Harvick scared us a little bit there at the end putting on two and having a good jump there on us on the restart there, but we ran him down and were able to pass him so I was pretty happy about that.”

What is it about your driving style and the cars in this series that makes you successful?

“I really like these cars. I didn’t like it so much when NASCAR went to the COT on the Cup side. I was just getting used to these cars over there. They had more horsepower and they had a couple different rules, but ultimately about the same thing. When I got to Joe Gibbs Racing I thought I was just hitting it, I was just getting ready to get going. And then we had the new car over there in the Cup stuff.

This car, I really like. It’s fun, man. I’ve really grown accustomed to these things and learned how to drive them. You can really drive the Nationwide cars hard because they don’t have a whole lot of horsepower so you can really try to make up a lot by being able to get more out of the car driverwise versus a Cup car you’d have to slow it down and finesse it a little bit more.”

JASON RATCLIFF, crew chief, No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

What does this win mean to you?

“When we left here last year we knew we missed it a little bit. It was disappointing. This is one of the race tracks last year that was being the inaugural event and new race track we definitely wanted to win one here and came up short, like Kyle (Busch) mentioned. We put a lot of effort into this track and made a lot of changes. The car is way different than it was last year. I feel like we made some gains on it and still needs a little bit of work.

Started the race not quite where we needed it, but thankfully when the sun went down it kind of played into our hands. And, then some adjustments that we made on the last two stops really helped us as well. The 99 (Trevor Bayne) car was good and (Kevin) Harvick made his stuff better and was good there at the end. I felt like on the last stop last year we took two (tires) with about 35 to go and I felt like the tires were definitely a plus.

We definitely needed tires. We were making adjustments on our car that were really, really making the thing fast, but we needed the adjustments that we had on the left-side tires. So, to put two on we weren’t going to get the adjustments we needed so that’s why we went with four and it worked out.”

Jason Leffler

JASON LEFFLER, No. 38 Great Clips Toyota Camry, Braun Racing

Finishing Position: 3rd

How was your run tonight?

“The guys did a great job. Eddie Pardue (crew chief) and the boys did a great job all day. We’ve had good cars the last couple of weeks and we’ve had nothing to show for it so I’m happy for them. They can be proud of that. The Great Clips Camry was really good. I’m with Kevin (Harvick) — the crowd was awesome and the hospitality here is incredible. It was that way last year. It’s awesome to see this so I’m pretty happy. The track is a racy track and I’m looking forward to coming back last year.”

Did you think you had a race-winning car tonight?

“We ran really good. It’s hard to run with the 18 (Kyle Busch). At times we could run with Kevin (Harvick), but the 18 and the 20 (Matt DiBenedetto) they’re in their own time zone for the last couple of years. So, you’ve got to be close to them if something happens and that’s what we try to do every week in and week out. My guys do a really good job for what they have to work with and I’m proud of that. We just try our hardest all of the time.”

Were you worried about the problems your teammates had with tires tonight?

“I don’t know. My brakes got hot one time on a long run. I just backed off and took care of them. Yeah, I wasn’t really worried. I didn’t know until after the race — the only person that I knew that crashed was Reed (Sorenson). I didn’t know Brian (Scott) had an issue until after the race so I wasn’t too worried.”

Trevor Bayne - Photo Credit: Todd Warshaw / Getty Images for NASCAR

TREVOR BAYNE, No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine Toyota Camry, Diamond-Waltrip Racing

Finishing Position: 5th

What did you learn from racing with Kyle Busch tonight?

“I learned so much from following Kyle (Busch). He deserves every bit of the credit he gets. He’s in great equipment, great crew chief (Jason Ratcliff) and he’s an unbelievable driver. That first 50 laps he was sideways the whole time and I followed him up and learned that top groove. How to get the car straight to run off of the corner and get good drive.

Our car was really free at the beginning, but as the night came on we got tighter and we kept getting tighter and tighter and that’s what really got us at the end. If that thing would’ve ended in daylight we probably could’ve got our first win here. But, we’re so happy about these top-fives every weekend. Three poles in a row, I mean, I hear that’s not very heard of so that’s awesome for this Aaron’s Dream Machine team. We’re just as excited as we can be.”

What happened to your car as it went from day to night?

“That was the biggest thing. We didn’t get any practice at night because it rained all day yesterday. We didn’t really know what the track was going to do and it just kept taking on its own rubber and kept getting more and more grip and that played into the other guys favor more so than us. It just kept getting tighter. Everybody was so free at the beginning. Their cars came to them. Us, we were pretty good at the beginning and we got tight at the end.”

What is your outlook for the future of this team?

“Keep doing what we’re doing. If we stay in the top-five I think it’s eventually going to come so we’ve just got to make sure we stay there every weekend and be in position.”

Steve Wallace - Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood / Getty Images for NASCAR

STEVE WALLACE, No. 66 5-hour Energy Toyota Camry, Rusty Wallace Racing

Finishing Position: 6th

How was your run tonight?

“Most disappointed I’ve ever been in my life, man. I had an awesome car those last two runs. We kept pulling air out of the left sides, dropping the track bar, and the thing kept getting better and better and better and better. There ain’t no reason to even talk about it, because we finished sixth. But if we would’ve got out front, I think I would’ve had a shot to win it, I really do. The guys had awesome pit stops, I mean incredible pit stops all day — and on the money stop, we screwed it up. It’s another top-10, man, but sixth to 10th is all we can do. We’ve got to get in the top five. We’ve got these cars handling now, but if it ain’t one thing, it’s another. Every time I’ve ever had a shot to win a race, something always gets screwed up.”

Michael Annett - Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood / Getty Images for NASCAR

MICHAEL ANNETT, No. 15 Northland Oil Toyota Camry, Germain Racing

Finishing Position: 7th

How happy are you to get a top-10 finish tonight in front of your hometown fans?

“I couldn’t be happier with this finish here in front of all the fans at my home track. My team really deserved this. They work their hearts out week in and week out and our finish tonight definitely proves it. There were hundreds of fans in the stands tonight from my primary sponsor this week, Northland Oil, and from our associate sponsors Power Lift, not to mention my family and fan base. It was great to have such a strong performance for those that make it possible for us to do this. I hope we can carry this momentum into the rest of the season.”

“A tire went down. It really didn’t give any warning. It’s a shame. Our No. 11 AccuDoc Solutions Toyota was really fast. Had a couple bad pit stops that put us back, but I feel like we were a top-three car all night. That’s a bummer. That’s just a bad break. It seems like that type of stuff always happens when you’re running good. All of the guys did a great job in bringing a really good car.

Everybody back at the fab shop with Braun and just everybody on this whole team. It’s the first time we’ve been that strong on a short track so that’s real encouraging. I don’t know if I ran over something or if it just went. It really didn’t give any sign and now our night is over.”

What happened to take you out of the race?

“Somebody wrecked and I should’ve been able to avoid it and I just didn’t know about it in time. By the time I was there I saw an opening on the top, I knew it was going to close when I saw the guy in front of me (Brian Keselowski) lock his brakes up and I knew I was in trouble. I think the 16 (Colin Braun) was sideways on the track. It looked like they lost it on their own. I just didn’t have enough notice.

We were running in the top-10 and we were just going forward all night long. Early on it was a little loose and as fuel burned out of it started to get quicker and quicker. I heard them saying we were a top-five lap time. Our Camry was fast. We were going to be a top-five Toyota night and make a run for it. But, that’s the story of our season, man. Every time we have good things happening another Toyota has to go back to the body shop.”

What happened to take you out of the race?

“I’m fine. We just had a little fire there. We blew a right-front (tire) there and hit the wall pretty hard. You’re just along for the ride there. I never raced here before so I was looking forward to it. I don’t even know what position we were in, but we had a pretty good car and passed a lot of cars. The Dollar General Camry wasn’t too bad for not even getting to practice it. The thing only had four laps of practice on it. I think the reason that we blew a right-front was that we had some type of brake cooling issue.

Something was going on with our brakes pretty big there so I don’t know if the brake fans weren’t working or what kind of issue we had. I don’t think we ran over anything. I think it just melted the bead. The last five laps there I was trying not to use the brakes at all and it was too late I think. This is the first DNF for us and hopefully we don’t have any more. I wish we got to take that Dollar General Camry a little bit
further along, but we are finished.”

(Photo by John Harrelson/Getty Images for NASCAR)

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch thoroughly dominated Friday night’s Royal Purple 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway by leading all but 19 of the race’s 147 laps en route to a stout 1-2 finish.

The two drivers, both representing Z-Line Designs, the designer and import manufacturer of ready-to-assemble furniture, showed their strength even before the race began. Hamlin in his No. 20 Z-Line Designs Toyota Camry took the pole in qualifying, while Busch put his No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota alongside Hamlin in the second spot. It provided a picture-perfect front row, with both Z-Line Designs entries serving as the backdrop for separate $25,000 check presentations to the two charities emblazoned on the car’s hoods.

Z-Line Designs founder and CEO Jim Sexton and his wife, Monica, presented the donations to Racing for Kids and Operation Helmet. Racing for Kids is a charity founded in Detroit in 1989 that uses the popularity of motorsports to focus public attention and funding on the health care needs of children, while Operation Helmet is a 100 percent volunteer, non-partisan charitable organization headquartered in Montgomery, Texas, that provides helmet upgrade kits free of charge to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Operation Helmet logo was on the No. 20 Toyota driven by Hamlin, while Busch’s No. 18 machine featured Racing For Kids. The race within the race was whichever driver finished higher, the charity on his racecar would get an additional $10,000 from Z-Line Designs. Call it mission accomplished for Hamlin and Operation Helmet.

“This was a great racecar. When you have a car that drives as good as it did today, it makes your job a whole lot easier,” said Hamlin, who has now scored three of his 10 career Nationwide Series victories at Darlington. “I gotta thank Monica Sexton. We won the competition with Kyle. Operation Helmet gives away after-market padding for soldier’s helmets. The stock stuff is pretty hard and pretty tough on the guys out there. We wanted to make their jobs as easy as possible.”

Busch led 17 laps to Hamlin’s race-high 111 laps led. The two drivers had fast racecars, obviously, but Busch often found himself in the dirty air of Hamlin’s wake. Unable to race in clean air, Busch couldn’t mount the charge necessary to pass his teammate, and he finished .625 of a second behind in the runner-up slot.

“We had a really, really fast racecar. Jason (Ratcliff, crew chief) and the guys did a great job,” said Busch, who posted his seventh top-10 in the 10 Nationwide Series races run this year. “I think we were a little bit better than what the ‘20’ (Hamlin) was, but it just shows how pivotal clean air is. He was out front all night.”

“It was a great competition between two terrific drivers,” said Jim Sexton, who sat atop the No. 18 pit box. “Both guys have won here before, but it was a great thing for the charities since they got some tremendous exposure. That’s what it’s all about. It really wasn’t about winning and losing, but highlighting the charities and getting their message out there and it worked out well tonight.”

“Everyone won tonight. We had great exposure for two wonderful causes,” added Monica Sexton, who cheered on the No. 20 team. “Everyone had a great time trying to win. Two causes that needed attention certainly got that.”

While the 1-2 finish – JGR’s ninth in the last 80 Nationwide Series races – brought attention to two worthy causes, it also brought attention to Kevin Kidd, who as Hamlin’s crew chief, scored his first career Nationwide Series victory.

“It’s just an overwhelming feeling right now to be able to go to victory lane, and particularly to do it at a place like this,” said Kidd, alluding to Darlington’s 61-year history. “It has as much history in it with great crew chiefs and great drivers who have been to victory lane here. I’m just proud to be a part of that now.”

Finishing third was Jamie McMurray, while Kasey Kahne and Jason Leffler rounded out the top-five. Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Brian Vickers and Paul Menard comprised the remainder of the top-10.

The race featured nine caution periods for 42 laps, with 11 drivers failing to finish the race.

While Hamlin and Busch are not running the full Nationwide Series schedule, JGR’s Nos. 18 and 20 Toyotas are competing or the owner’s title. Both gained one spot with their 1-2 finish. The No. 20 car improved to second in the standings with 1,598 points, 17 markers behind the first-place No. 22 car of Penske Racing. The No. 18 car moved up to third with 1,560 points, 55 behind the leader.

The next event on the Nationwide Series schedule is the May 15 Heluva Good! 200 at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. The race starts at 2:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 2 p.m.
