(Sept. 23, 2014) – The number “500” has great significance in auto racing. The Indianapolis 500 – long called the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” – is the original 500-mile race. It was first run in 1911, and is still widely known as “The 500” in racing circles. The Southern 500 NASCAR race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway followed suit in 1950, while the Daytona 500 was first contested in 1959. Since then, 500-lap races have become the norm at short tracks and there are other 500-mile races at racetracks across the country.
