(December 8, 2011) – Veteran NASCAR driver Brendan Gaughan will compete in 10 races on the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule, driving Richard Childress Racing’s No. 33 Chevrolet Impala, and in eight races on the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule, driving RCR’s No. 2 Chevrolet Silverado.

Gaughan, 36, is the 2002 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year and competed fulltime in the Nationwide Series in 2009 and 2010, earning one pole and 17 top-10 finishes in 71 career starts. He finished ninth in the 2009 driver championship point standings and 11th in 2010. The two-time NASCAR Camping World Series West champion (2000-2001) has also earned eight victories and 63 top-10 finishes in 187 Truck Series starts, finishing 12th in the 2011 driver championship point standings. Gaughan was also part of the five-driver lineup that won the GT3 division of the 2011 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race at Daytona International Speedway.

“The last few years, I have been racing for teams that try to buy their engineering or equipment from organizations as great as RCR, but doing that is never the same as racing for RCR,” said Gaughan. “I have always steered away from switching to a part-time schedule in the past but I had to look at where I would have the best opportunity to win races again and the opportunity to race for Richard Childress is one I couldn’t pass up. By sharing the Nationwide Series seat with RCR’s Cup Series drivers, I know I’m going to be in the best equipment in the garage and have the best opportunity to win races to get myself back to where I want to be and that is to compete fulltime again.”

Brendan Gaughan

Gaughan’s Nationwide and Truck Series races will be sponsored by South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, with the exception of two Nationwide Series events which will be sponsored by Menards.

The Las Vegas native’s 18-race schedule will kick-off with the Truck Series event at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and includes visits in both series to his home track of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gaughan’s Nationwide Series events include races at Iowa Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Dover (Del.) International Speedway and Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway among others. His Truck Series line-up includes events at Texas Motor Speedway, where he is a four-time winner, Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and others, as well as the 2012 season finale at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.

“Brendan is a proven race winner and champion so we’re excited to have him driving for RCR,” said Richard Childress, president and chief executive officer of Richard Childress Racing. “He will be a great addition to RCR’s overall driver lineup as we re-launch our NASCAR Nationwide Series program and continue the strength of our Camping World Truck Series program in 2012.”

The complete crew chief and remaining driver lineup for the No. 33 Nationwide Series team and the No. 2 Truck Series team will be announced at a later date.

For additional information on today’s announcement, and all that’s happening at RCR, please visit www.rcrracing.com.

NASCAR Nationwide Series Race 28 of 34 – Chicagoland Speedway

CHICAGO BOUND WITH MENARD: The NASCAR Nationwide Series returns to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend with Paul Menard returning to the driver’s seat of the No. 33 Rheem/Menards Chevrolet Impala. Menard will make his fifth start this season with the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) team. In four previous starts, the Eau Claire, Wis., native finished inside the top six with a best finish of second at Richmond International Raceway in April. Menard also qualified the KHI Chevrolet inside the top 10 for each race, including starting on the pole at Michigan International Speedway in June.

TEN FOR KHI: KHI has made 10 starts at Chicagoland, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this season. KHI, in its 10th year of competition this season, has yet to earn a victory at Chicagoland. The organization has one top-five and four top-10 finishes with KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick earning the best finish of seventh after starting from the pole in last season’s race at the track.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Kevin Harvick and the No. 33 Rheem team headed to the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Nationwide Series second visit of the season at Richmond International Raceway last Friday night. Harvick started from the 13th position and fought through early-race handling issues only to get involved in a late-race accident that left the team with a 20th-place finish.

CHASSIS HISTORY: For the Nationwide Series’ second race this season at Chicagoland, the No. 33 Rheem/Menards team prepared chassis No. 071. This will be the eighth time the KHI team will utilize this particular chassis, most recently with Harvick at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he drove to a fourth-place finish. Chassis No. 071 has a trio of third-place finishes as top results.

“This is a big weekend for me. Chicago is close to home and is the closest track to home that I’ll get to run, and I have spent a lot of time in the area through the years. There will be a lot of friends and family there as well as Team Members from our Chicagoland stores. We’ll look to continue our success from the previous races and get the No. 33 Rheem/Menards Chevy its first win.”

About Menards:

With 263 stores in 13 Midwestern states, Menards has the tools, materials and supplies for all your home improvement needs whether just needing a light bulb or can of paint to building a deck or new home. Menards is known throughout the home improvement industry as the low price leader; it’s no wonder their famous slogan – “SAVE BIG MONEY” – is so widely known and easy to remember. Menards does things right – the company’s strength and success can be seen in the well-stocked and maintained stores, the lowest prices in town and the way guests are always treated like family in a hometown hardware store atmosphere.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards has not competed at this speedway since 1973. This will be the first time that Frank Kimmel has competed at Madison International Speedway, but the prospect of winning for Frank remains identical to all races.

Frank is coming off a tolerable 7th place finish at the Illinois State Fairgrounds last weekend, which moved him back up to 2nd in the Championship Points Standings. Yet, last Sunday the nine-time ARCA Series Champ feels like another win was right outside their grasp and he’s hoping the new track scenery this Friday night will prove to be the difference maker.

Frank Kimmel

“We had an Ansell-Menards Ford capable of winning at Springfield but we lost the handling late. The races that you know you can win are always the hardest to the get over but I’m looking forward to this Friday and racing at Madison. Going to new race tracks is always exciting. Plus, it’s cool that my sponsor Menards is based in the same state, so I’m sure there will be plenty of Menards employees there to cheer us on,” said Frank Kimmel.

Activities for Frank Kimmel begin with two Menards store location visits on Thursday afternoon, August 25th, which will last for an hour-and-a-half. Frank is set to sign autographs, pose for pictures, and even offer a special promotion to store customers. Frank will first appear at the Madison East Menards store starting at 4:00 pm CST (2102 East Springs Drive). Later that day Frank arrives at the Madison West location at 6:30 pm CST (430 Commerce Drive). Store visitors can take advantage of a special promotion at either location, simply by purchasing a pair of Ansell gloves inside the store. Those purchasing Ansell gloves inside Menards will receive a voucher for a free second pair of gloves, personally handed over by Frank Kimmel outside the store.

“This is a really cool promotion that Ansell and Menards are offering. Menards has a style of Ansell glove for any type of job and I’m glad to be a part of offering customers an opportunity to have another pair for free,” concluded Frank.

Finally on Friday night, Frank Kimmel will try to go to victory lane for the first time at Madison International Speedway in the Herr’s Live Life with Flavor! 200. Also, be sure to visit a Menards location to purchase your next pair of Ansell Gloves.

International Raceway. In 10 previous starts, the Wisconsin native has collected two top-five and four top-10 finishes and has led 160 laps around the 0.75-mile D-shaped oval.

KHI SUCCESS: Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) co-owner Kevin Harvick is no stranger to victory lane in Richmond. The driver has five Nationwide Series wins at the Virginia track, including his most recent win in his own equipment last September.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Austin Dillon made his KHI debut and his first start for 2011 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series last weekend at Nashville Superspeedway. After starting from the third position, Dillon powered the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet to a seventh-place finish. The top 10 was the team’s sixth in eight races so far this season.

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Menards team has prepared chassis No. 066 for this weekend’s event at Richmond International Raceway. This chassis has seen competition in two events this season. Harvick and the No. 33 KHI team collected a third-place finish at Phoenix International Raceway in February and brought home a sixth-place finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in March.

MENARD’S THOUGHTS ON RICHMOND:

“I’m looking forward to getting back in the No. 33 Chevy this weekend and looking forward to racing at Richmond. I really like racing there and have had some good runs in the past. We had a great race at Texas a few weeks ago, so I’m looking forward to picking back up where we left off and getting another good run in with this KHI team.”

The race will be the 22nd for ARCA in Winchester, Ind., located near the Indiana-Ohio border and approximately 75 miles northeast of Indianapolis. The first ARCA race at Winchester was held in 1957, just the fifth season of ARCA Racing Series competition.

“It’s important for the ARCA Racing Series to be at Winchester Speedway. It’s exactly the type of Midwestern facility where the ARCA brand is well-known and has the chance to be successful,” said ARCA president Ron Drager. “Winchester is big enough and fast enough to play to the very nature of our cars.”

Drager noted the important influence of Menards, the series’ presenting sponsor, in scheduling the Winchester event.

“One of the significant advantages of racing at Winchester is hosting an event inside the Menards footprint. As Menards emerges as our highest-profile marketing partner, being inside that retail area has a lot of value,” Drager said.

Featuring a 37-degree banking, Winchester is known for true speed and has hosted numerous USAC Silver Crown, Midget, and Sprint events in addition to its history with ARCA. The storied facility also hosts highly successful CRA events, including Labor Day weekend and the Winchester 400.

“I think ARCA has a good name, and is known really well country-wide. ARCA is an asset to Winchester Speedway, and I think Winchester Speedway can be an asset to ARCA too,” said Charlie Shaw, owner of Winchester Speedway.

“ARCA has been around a long time and it’s a well-respected association. The series races around most of the country at big tracks, small tracks, and so forth, and it’s a stepping stone for stock car drivers. I think that’s an important part of Winchester Speedway, too, as it’s a stepping stone. If people can run well at Winchester, they can usually run at the bigger tracks.”

Indiana native Frank Kimmel is the leading ARCA Racing Series winner at Winchester, with five victories (1996, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006), followed by three-time series champ Tim Steele, who won four times (1993, 1995, 1997, 2001). Billy Leslie won from the pole in the series’ most recent visit to the track, in May 2007. Leslie’s father, 1988 series champion Tracy Leslie, was also a winner at Winchester, triumphing in 1988 and 1999.

ARCA’s tenure at Winchester reaches back to 1957, when on June 30th Don O’Dell won the inaugural event in a Chevrolet. Other ARCA winners at Winchester over the years include Jack Bowsher (1964), Ralph Latham (1972), Bobby Watson (1972), and two-time series champion Marvin Smith, who won back-to-back races in 1982 and 1983. Other winners include Bob Keselowski (1990), Gary Bradberry (1994), and Bob Strait (1998).

One of the oldest speedways in America, Winchester debuted in 1914 as a flat half-mile dirt oval and remained that way through 1921. The high-banks were added in time for the 1922 season; however, the track would not be paved until 1952. A 1995 re-paving provided the surface found today.

Races at Daytona International Speedway on February 12, Michigan International Speedway on June 17, and Salem Speedway on May 1 and September 17 have already been announced, and the remainder of the diverse 2011 ARCA Racing Series schedule will be released shortly. Meanwhile, the thrilling 2010 campaign will close Saturday, December 4, with the series’ Championship Awards Banquet at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky., near Cincinnati.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 28 states since its inception. The series tests the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, annually visiting tracks ranging from 0.4 mile to 2.66 miles in length, on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as left- and right-turn street and road courses.

Founded by John Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Closing in on completing its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in two professional touring series and local weekly events.

Sandusky, Oh. (November 20, 2010) – End of season notes and stats for ThorSport Racing and drivers Johnny Sauter and Matt Crafton following the 25th and final race of the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season at Homestead-Miami Speedway:

- Johnny Sauter finished third in the series standings, his best career result in the NCWTS in two full-time seasons; he finished sixth last season en route to the series’ Raybestos Rookie of the Year award.

- Matt Crafton finished fourth in the series standings, his third consecutive top-five result and his fourth overall.
Sauter scored one win in 2010, at Kansas Speedway, his second career series victory; his first came last season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

- Sauter’s win at Kansas Speedway was the fourth series victory for ThorSport Racing; Terry Cook scored the team’s first win at Flemington Speedway in 1998, Crafton earned the team’s second victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2008, and Sauter picked up the team’s third win last season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

- Sauter scored 14 top-five finishes in 2010 and Crafton earned 10, giving the organization 24 top-fives; that equates to a top-five finish in 47 percent of its 51 starts throughout the season (25 starts for both Sauter and Crafton, one start at Daytona for Landon Cassill).

- Sauter finished among the top three ten times with one win, five second-place finishes and four third-place finishes.
Crafton scored top-ten finishes in 20 of the series’ 25 races in 2010, tying him with Todd Bodine for the series’ best; 16 of Crafton’s top-tens were consecutive starting at Iowa Speedway in July through the final event of the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the longest streak by any series driver this season.

- Sauter led 220 laps in six races; he led 101 on his way to victory at Kansas Speedway, four laps en route to second-place at Iowa Speedway, 21 laps in a second-place performance at Kentucky Speedway, 49 laps at Martinsville Speedway, 31 laps en route to another second-place run at Texas Motor Speedway, and 12 laps on his way to a third-place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

- Sauter’s 220 laps led is the most in a single season by a ThorSport Racing driver.

- Crafton came within one top-ten run of matching his career best of 21, set last season.

- Both Sauter and Crafton finished among the top-five six times in 2010: Gateway International Raceway, O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Texas Motor Speedway (November), and Phoenix International Raceway.

- ThorSport Racing is the first team to place two drivers among the top five in the series’ final championship standings since 2008 when Bill Davis Racing placed both Johnny Benson and Mike Skinner in the top five; ThorSport Racing is the first non-Sprint Cup affiliated team to do so since 2002 when Ultra Motorsports placed both Ted Musgrave and Jason Leffler in the top five.

- Crafton earned ThorSport Racing’s only pole of the season in the November race at Texas Motor Speedway; it was his second consecutive pole in the fall race at TMS and his fourth career pole (New Hampshire Motor Speedway, 2005; Chicagoland Speedway, 2009; Texas Motor Speedway, 2009; Texas Motor Speedway, 2010).

- Crafton led 15 laps in three races in 2010; he led 10 laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway, one lap at Michigan International Speedway, and four laps en route to a fourth-place finish at Talladega Superspeedway.

- Sauter started among the top ten in 23 of the series’ 25 races; his only starts outside the top ten were 12th at Pocono Raceway and 21st at Martinsville Speedway in October.

- Despite not completing a single lap of the 100 possible in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway due to an accident caused by another driver, Sauter completed 3,783 of a possible 3,874 competition laps in 2010. The only time Sauter did not complete every possible lap on the racetrack following the Daytona race was when he was put a lap down by winner Kyle Busch in the late stages of the April event at Nashville Superspeedway.

- Sauter’s average start in 2010 was 6.5; his average finish was 8.1.

- Crafton’s average start in 2010 was 8.0; his average finish was 8.9.

- ThorSport Racing earned points in the manufacturers’ championship by fielding the highest finishing Chevrolet seven times: Crafton at Daytona International Speedway and Sauter at Kansas Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway (June), Gateway International Raceway, Kentucky Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, and Texas Motor Speedway (November).

- In 2010, ThorSport Racing completed its ninth consecutive full season with sponsorship from Menards, tying Ultra Motorsports and Team ASE for the longest team-sponsor relationship in series history. ThorSport Racing and Menards will break that record when the 2011 season kicks off at Daytona.

- ThorSport Racing is owned by Duke and Rhonda Thorson; the team’s shop is located in Sandusky, Ohio, just ten minutes from the front gates of the world renowned amusement park Cedar Point.

Paul Menard on racing at Texas Motor Speedway: “We have some unfinished business at Texas. We ran well there in the spring, but I know we have what it takes to bring home a win. If we get on and off of pit road cleanly and take care of our race car, I have no doubt we will be there at the end of the race.”

Crew chief Matt Puccia on racing at Texas Motor Speedway: “The key to running well at Texas is having good balance on your race car. Our Ford had good speed in the spring race, so I am very comfortable with our setup going into this weekend. Paul has had some success at Texas in the past which can only help us run well and contend for a win.”

REWIND, Madison, ILL. – Paul Menard and the No. 98 Mastercraft / Menards team pulled out a hard-fought top 10 finish in the 5-Hour Energy 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Gateway International Raceway on Saturday afternoon.

Menard started in the back of the field after arriving after qualifying from the NASCAR Sprint Cup event in Martinsville, Va; but was able to maneuver his way to the front and crack the top 10 by lap 75. Menard struggled with an ill-handling race car in long stretches of the race, but never gave up and ultimately secured a workman like ninth-place finish. Menard remains fifth in the Nationwide Series point standings.

MENARDS ON THE TRACK… In addition to their partnership with Roush Fenway Racing and the No. 98 Ford NASCAR Nationwide Series team, Menards is also affiliated with the racing ventures of Matt Crafton and Frank Kimmel, as well as the No. 98 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford entry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Goess and the No. 81 Eddie Sharp Racing Toyota qualified first at Michigan International Speedway in June, the season’s eighth race, and won the Menards Pole Award twice in four weeks in the season’s final third to finish with a total of three Menards Pole Awards, more than any other driver.

Goess’s two Menards Pole Awards near the end of the season played a key role in his pursuit of the championship. Although Goess finished second in the final series standings, earning 15 bonus qualifying points at Chicagoland Speedway in August and at Salem Speedway in September helped him stay close to eventual series champion Patrick Sheltra.

Goess edged Roulo Brothers Racing’s Chris Buescher and Venturini Motorsports’ Mikey Kile, who each finished with two Menards Pole Awards. Buescher qualified first at Toledo Speedway in May and at Mansfield Motorsports Park in July, while Kile won the pole at Pocono Raceway in June – for a race won by Goess – and at Kansas Speedway in September.

“I am honored to receive the year-end Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell. The competition this year in the ARCA Racing Series was fierce, and with so many different pole winners, I’m thrilled to win the award at the end of the season,” Goess said.

The 29-year-old driver praised those who helped him win the award.

“I have to thank the No. 81 Greenville Toyota of N.C. Eddie Sharp Racing team for all of their hard work all season long. I am proud to receive this award, and I have to thank Menards and Ansell for sponsoring the award and being such a large part in our series.”

Menards, headquartered in Eau Claire, Wis., is the Official Home Improvement Store and a presenting sponsor of the ARCA Racing Series. Ansell, headquarted in Red Bank, N.J., is the Official Glove of the ARCA Racing Series. In addition to sponsorship of the series’ pole award, a comprehensive business-to-business venture between the two companies includes race sponsorships, in-market promotions, at-track hospitality opportunities, and support of ARCA’s television broadcast package.

Menards and Ansell serve together as co-primary sponsors of the No. 44 Kimmel Racing Ford and nine-time ARCA Racing Series champion Frank Kimmel. Kimmel won the Menards Pole Award at Pocono in July.

Additional winners of the race-by-race $1000 Menards Pole Award include: James Buescher (Daytona), Casey Roderick (Palm Beach), Max Gresham (Salem), Dakoda Armstrong (Talladega), Ty Dillon (Iowa), Brian Campbell (Berlin), Justin Marks (New Jersey), Steve Arpin (Springfield), A.J. Fike (DuQuoin), and Kevin Swindell (Rockingham). In all, 14 different drivers won the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell in 2010.

The 2010 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards Championship Awards Banquet will take place Saturday, December 4 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington, Ky., near Cincinnati.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 racetracks in 28 states since its inception.

Crew chief Matt Puccia on racing at Dover International Speedway: “Dover is mean race track that requires a solid game plan to be successful.
REWIND, RICHMOND, Va. – Paul Menard rolled off the grid in the 10th position on Friday night at Richmond International Raceway. Menard made a green flag pit stop on lap 111 and returned to the track in the 18th position.
RICHARD CHILDRESS: “We’re really excited about it. A lot of people have asked, ‘Why four teams? Why are you going back to four teams?’ That’s a question that I know we’ll get, so I figure I’ll go ahead and get that one out of the way. We felt that right now is a really good time to do it. We had it in 2009, and that wasn’t any effect on our performance. We’re going to do this team completely different than we did that one. I think the key thing is Paul, his driving abilities fits right in with our guys. Jeff, and all our guys are excited about having him over; he’s done such a great job on the race track, just improving. He took off early this year and was in the points a pretty good ways up there. We feel that we can take and keep him right up there running for the Chase next year. We’re excited about it. The end of 2009, we came on real strong and all four teams were running good. That’s kind of where we’re at.

“As far as Menards [as a sponsor] the history with me goes back quite a few years with Menards. We had Robby Gordon and myself put a deal together to run Menards; John owned the car with me at Indianapolis. I’ve got some past history. It’s just a great company, a great company to be involved with, and that’s one thing that we’re fortunate at RCR is to surround ourselves with great companies. We’re excited about being with Menards and Paul’s driving ability—it just gets better every week just watching him in these Nationwide races and watching him in the Cup races. It’s pretty impressive and I think everybody in here has seen that as well.”

PAUL MENARD: “Like Richard eluded to, the time was right for us to make this move. We’ve known each other for 10 years or so, since the IndyCar program in 2000 or 2001. We’ve always kicked this around, we’ve kicked this around for years and the time was right to pull the trigger on it and go for it. As far as a fourth team, that’s a question I had for Richard is how is it going to work this time. The answer I got was that really the fourth team had no bearing on the performance last year. They really upped their engineering game, and got their cars improved over the winter, and there is no reason why a fourth team right now won’t work. It’s an honor to be associated with RCR. He’s had a very successful past and from everything I see, it’s going to be a very successful future.”

RICHARD, YOU TALKED ABOUT STRUCTURING THIS FOURTH TEAM DIFFERENTLY THAN YOU DID THE LAST TIME. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON WHAT YOU MEAN?

CHILDRESS: “Yes, I think one of the big things that we did is from the top down, how we restructured RCR with Scott Miller, boosting up our engineering department with Kent Day. I think our engine program is as solid as it has ever been for four teams. I just thing the engineering-side of where we’re at, and where we were then, and the structure from the top down—Mike Dillon is still over our competition, but he has the right people in the right places now to make it work. I think that is the biggest thing, it’s about people. I think we put together the people to make this thing really work and to have a fourth team be competitive as well.”

WHAT DO YOU DO ABOUT POINTS? DO YOU THINK YOU’LL FIND A WAY TO GET PAUL LOCKED IN FOR DAYTONA, OR DO YOU ANTICIPATE HAVING TO RACE YOUR WAY IN? CHILDRESS: “Well, we’re going to see. That’s coming down the road. If there is an opportunity for us to get the points, we will definitely go after the points.”

ARE YOU GOING TO DO THE TWO-AND-TWO STRUCTURE FOR YOUR TEAMS LIKE RICK HENDRICK DOES? OR ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE ALL FOUR TEAMS WORKING TOGETHER? AND WHO IS GOING TO BE THE CREW CHIEF? WHAT ABOUT SLUGGER [LABBE], IS HE IN THE PICTURE AT ALL? CHILDRESS: “We’re working, Mike Dillon is working right now, we’ve been looking at some opportunities for crew chiefs and we’ve been talking [to a few options]. Paul can maybe answer the part about Slugger. Right now, we’re just talking to a lot of different people. As far as two and two, we feel that we’re one team with four drivers and that’s the way we look at it, and we don’t want to separate two and two, or nothing like that. Everybody works in the same area. All of our shops and crew chiefs are together and it works out really well. All of our drivers are excited about having Paul aboard as well.”

MENARD: “As far as Slugger, we’ve had a great relationship this year. I would love to work with him in the future. RPM did pick up his contract option for next year, but if it works out where I can work with Slugger in the future I’d definitely welcome it.”

RICHARD, WITH ADDING THIS TEAM, WILL YOU NEED TO HIRE MORE PEOPLE OR WILL YOU JUST MOVE PEOPLE FROM THE NATIONWIDE PROGRAM THAT YOU HAD OVER THERE? HOW WILL YOU INCORPORATE THE PEOPLE, AND HOW DOES THAT IMPACT EVERYONE ELSE THAT YOU EMPLOY? CHILDRESS: “We will be adding more people, but we will be using a few from the Nationwide shop. Most of them, Mike Dillon that’s his role, he’s been already looking around, seeing who’s available, seeing who’s not under contract, or who’s contracts may be coming up that may be available.”

RICHARD, DO YOU HAVE A CAR NUMBER YET? CHILDRESS: “We’ve got one, but I think I’m going to talk to the marketing folks at Menards and to Paul, and let it be a joint—We’ve got the number 15, and Paul has driven it before—but we don’t know that that’s the number that we’re going to use yet. I want Paul to be happy with what he’s driving as well, and what the Menards want to help market around.”

PAUL, THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME YOU’VE SWITCHED TEAMS AND EACH TIME YOUR FAMILY SPONSORSHIP HAS FOLLOWED YOU. THERE ARE SOME FANS THAT BELIEVE YOU’RE ONLY ABLE TO DO THIS BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT FAMILY BACKING. DO YOU SEE THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY WITH A REALLY GOOD TEAM TO SORT OF REPROVE THAT IT’S MORE THAN JUST THE NAME IF YOU CAN COME IN HERE AND DO WELL? MENARD: “Yeah, I’ve had some good relationships in the past. I spent a long time at DEI. Left there and went to Yates, which merged with RPM, so I think that is staying in the same place. We had all options to leave Yates at the end of ’09; we had a two-year agreement with them. We decided to stick it through 2010, and it’s been a good year. I’ve got a lot of great relationships at RPM, and it’s just time to make a move. Of course, I’ve got my family backing me and if they’re going to back somebody—they’re going to be involved in this sport one way or another. My dad has been going to Indianapolis since the mid-70s before I was born. I grew up around racing. I’ve got the racing background, my family are huge race fans, they’ve been competitors in the past. If they’re going to back somebody, I’m probably the easiest one to yell at and I can dish it back out, so it’s a good lateral relationship that if I have to answer to somebody as a sponsor it’s my brothers, my sisters and my uncle and my dad. We can work it out.”

DOES IT COME WITH ANY EXTRA PRESSURE THAT YOU HAVE TO DELIVER BECAUSE IT’S YOUR FAMILY NAME ON THE SIDE OF THE CAR? MENARD: “Earlier on, you heard a lot of that. It’s all talk though. It’s all what you make of it and I’ve looked past that and grew past that. People will always be talking about it and there is nothing that you can do about that. Bottom line is we’re a racing family, we have a racing heritage, and I’m a racecar driver and that’s what we enjoy doing. It’s kind of our hobby, it’s part of our business, and it’s worked in the past and will work in the future.”

CHILDRESS: “I’d like to comment on that real quick. I get the same thing with Austin Dillon [my grandson] driving our truck—he’s got the break, but the difference is Paul and Austin both are making a difference. They’ve got the opportunity, but if you watch them on the race tracks, Paul does the job on the race track. It’s something that he loves to do and a passion; it’s not just because he’s got the sponsor that comes along. He’s got the drive to go out and want to win just like Austin. I get that question and Austin gets the same thing. The difference is both of these guys really want to go out and win.”

PAUL, WHEN YOU GO MAKE A MOVE LIKE THIS DO YOU HAVE TO GO TO YOUR FAMILY AND JUSTIFY IT FROM A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE, OR DOES YOUR FAMILY LOOK AT IT FROM A RACING PERSPECTIVE AND VIEW IT AS A GOOD MOVE? MENARD: “I get a lot of questions about why we’re doing something or how it’s going to work out in Menard Incorporated’s best interest. It’s questions that any sponsor would ask of their driver and their team representatives—that’s no different. Luckily, I’ve got direct phone numbers to every board of directors at Menards, and we can sit down once a quarter and talk about it.”

RICHARD, WHERE ARE YOU AT ON SPONSORSHIP FOR THE 29? CHILDRESS: “Hopefully we’ll be making an announcement next week. We’re pretty excited about this year and the future especially. John, Paul’s dad, is a neat guy and like he said I’ve known the family for years. He expects results because he has a board to answer to so we got to go out and win races and put the thing up front.”

PAUL, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR PROGRESS THIS SEASON AND THE KIND OF SEASON THAT YOU’RE HAVING? AND RICHARD, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE POTENTIAL YOU SEE IN PAUL AND THE KIND OF SEASON THAT HE IS HAVING? MENARD: “This year, I’ve been pretty happy with this year. We’re not where we want to be in points; we want to improve on that. We’ve had some really good runs, especially early on in the year. As of late we’ve kind of gotten behind in I guess May or June; we just kind of got behind and we’re trying to make up for that right now. Richard Petty Motorsports is a great organization there is a lot of smart people there. When the merger with Yates happened in late December, we were way behind; having to move shops twice during the off season, not having cars built and trying to build cars throughout the moving process. We had every opportunity to really fall on our face when the season started but everybody really worked hard and Slugger and all of the crew chiefs at RPM with Kenny Shiplett and Wally Rogers, at the time, they got the job done. Like I said, it’s a great organization and we’ve got a very good relationship.”

CHILDRESS: “I think there’s more pressure on RCR than there is on Paul to go out and perform. He’s proved what he can do this year, and now we have to go out and prove that we can give him the equipment as good as he’s got and hopefully we can get him better in the points and get him up there contending for a win. If you look back at some of the races, I’ve watched him over the last few years, he’s got what it takes to win if put in the right place and the right equipment and that’s our job to do.”

SCOTT MILLER WAS REALLY HIGH ON YOU PAUL AND TALKED ABOUT YOUR TALENT. I WANT TO ASK, WHEN YOU ARE SWITCHING SO MANY TEAMS AND YOU’VE GOT TO MEET A LOT OF NEW PEOPLE AND ADAPT TO THE SITUATIONS. NOW YOU HAVE A WHOLE NEW SET OF PEOPLE AND THE WAY THEY OPERATE, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGES OF THAT WHEN YOU MOVE FROM TEAM TO TEAM? MENARD: “I mean, that’s one of the toughest parts about it honestly. We have a three year deal here, so it’s a place where I can really grow in to and get to know everybody. Spending two years at Yates, last year, and RPM, this year, I feel like it took a good six months to get to know how the Yates/RPM/Roush whole fixture works. That’s a pretty complex system that they have. It just takes time. Luckily I’ve been in this sport long enough to really know different crew members on different teams. Richard has some people that I’ve worked with at DEI before while working up there, so there are some familiar faces. It’s a people sport for sure and I feel like I’ve got a good relationship with a lot of people in the garage.”

RICHARD, I’M ASSUMING THAT YOU DIDN’T’ GET THE MEMO THAT THE ECONOMY IS DOWN, AND YET YOU’RE IN A SITUATION WHERE YOU HAVE A PENDING SPONSORSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT AND YOU’RE ADDING A TEAM WITH A SPONSOR. WHAT DO YOU ATTEST YOUR GROWTH TO DURING SUCH A TOUGH TIME? CHILDRESS: “I think a lot of it and it’s nothing to do with any other teams, but I think it boils down to performance. If we were performing like we did at the start of 2009, we wouldn’t be in this situation today. We knew that we have to keep our teams performing at whatever cost to get back up front because that’s where the sponsors are, as long as we produce on the racetrack it makes it easier to get sponsors. We’ve made a huge investment and we’re still making investments even in these times in new equipment and new stuff. We’ve got so much going on at RCR now with new programs that we’re really proud of it. You’ve got to keep growing; you can’t live on what you did last year. We can live next year on whatever we do this year either.”

REWIND, Newton, IA… Paul Menard rolled off the grid in the U.S. Cellular 250 Nationwide Race in the 30th position on Saturday night at Iowa Speedway. Menard had a good car early, saying that it was “a bit tight in the center of the corner.” The veteran driver entered the pits under caution on lap 43 in the 13th position.

On lap 93, he was caught up in a wreck that damaged the right side of the car.

The crew worked diligently to repair the damage in four subsequent pit stops. Menard said his car never felt the same but the wheelman stayed focused and was able to salvage a 16th place finish.

- MENARD at Gateway International Speedway… In three starts at Gateway International Speedway, Menard has one top-5 finish.

QUOTES

Paul Menard on racing at Gateway International Speedway:

“It’s been a while since I have run at Gateway and I am looking forward to this weekend. Sprint Cup is off so it will be nice to focus on the Nationwide Race exclusively. We have had some success there in the past so I am confident that we will have an opportunity to secure another top-five finish at Gateway.”

(June 11, 2010) — Mikey Kile needed a late caution in the Racing for Wildlife 200 ARCA Racing Series event at Michigan International Speedway on Friday, got it, unlike last week at Pocono, and posted his first victory in 16 attempts on the circuit.

It appeared pole-sitter Craig Goess had the field covered, leading from the start, until he pitted under green with 25 laps remaining in the 100-lap event. But a caution appeared when Chase Mattioli spun out. That allowed Kile, who was running second, to pit under yellow, assume the lead and he was never threatened after that.

Kile saw just the opposite situation the previous week at Pocono when he led for 67 laps of the 80-lap event and appeared ready to win when a late caution flag pushed him back in the field with Goess taking advantage of the situation for his first win this season.

“I think all the racing Gods were with us this week,” said Kile, the 27-year-old from Westlake, La. “We led most of the laps last week at Pocono and came up short when we got a caution we didn’t need, but the roles were reversed today and a caution came out when we needed it.”

Kile was the sixth different first-time winner this year and seventh different winner in eight races.

“I didn’t know who I was racing and who was on the lead lap after the caution,” Kile said. “I didn’t know if I was racing the 81 (Goess) or what. I felt like us and the 81 were the class of the field. I figured if we didn’t get another caution after that we would be in good shape.”

Goess finished sixth and was the last car on the lead lap after going a lap down during the late caution period.

“We ran away from everybody all day,” Goess said. “You can’t come back from being a lap down. What will help me sleep tonight is that were the dominant car all day. It was a solid weekend for us.”

Joey Coulter finished second followed by current ARCA points leader Patrick Sheltra, Justin Marks and Frank Kimmel.

There is plenty of track action at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday. NASCAR Camping World Truck Series takes the track for VFW 200 practice and qualifying; and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers take final practices for Sunday’s Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400.

Saturday tickets are $30 and can be purchased at track ticket offices.

Sunday tickets are also available, and start at $30 for general admission. Kids 12 and under are free in those sections.

Nestled in the lush Irish Hills of Southeastern Michigan, Michigan International Speedway is the Great Escape, a venerable NASCAR national park where fans can get away and enjoy the very best in racing and camaraderie. It’s the love of racing and the thrill of a great time for race fans and drivers alike.
