(November 12, 2011) – Robert Richardson, Jr. and the No. 23 North Texas Pipe Chevrolet team of R3 Motorsports endured a long weekend of racing at the newly-paved track of Phoenix International Raceway.

Because of the new pavement and reconfiguration of the one-mile oval, NASCAR gave Nationwide Series teams one extra practice session to adjust to their new surroundings. Richardson and the Greg Conner-led team utilized those three practice sessions to qualify 30th for Saturday’s 200-lap event.

In the early going, he vaulted up to 23rd and avoided a wreck on the first lap. From there, he would begin to fluctuate in the 20s on the scoring pylon. A lap 37 caution allowed him to hit pit road for tires, fuel and adjustments to the No. 23 Chevrolet.

By the halfway point, he was running 28th and looking to avoid right front tire problems like others were experiencing as the race continued. Another caution stop after the green flag flew on lap 130 allowed another trip to pit road for tires fuel and adjustments.

This would allow him, and the others, to go the distance until the checkered flag – if needed. However, the fate of the race changed for Richardson and team while they were running 23rd on lap 160 when the No. 89 of Morgan Shepherd was inside of him going through the Turns 3 and 4.

The two made contact with Richardson’s No. 23 Chevrolet getting pushed up into the outside causing damage to the right front and rear of the car. He immediately dove to pit road for repairs and tires once the caution waved.

A bit worse for wear – but still good to go – Richardson was able to return to action for the lap 165 restart, giving up only four positions from where he was running before getting spun. From there, the battle up front by the leaders waged on for the final 30 laps.

A red flag with 25 to go slowed the pace of the race after a multi-car crash on the frontstretch as some of the leaders got into each other. Luckily, Richardson was able to avoid the mayhem and not attain any more damage to his car.

Give credit to crew chief Greg Conner and team as they were able to make enough repairs – and to Richardson for his committed driving – to finish the race in 22nd place. The NNS heads to the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway next weekend.

Robert Richardson Jr.

Robert Richardson, Jr. Quotes:

“I have to give credit to the folks of Phoenix because they did a real good job in all they did to this track. We really worked hard in each of the practices to get better and better and figure out what was best for our Chevrolet.

“We did okay in qualifying, I wish we could have done better. But, it worked out okay because we were able to pick up a bunch of spots in the first few laps. It was kind of crazy out there in some parts of the race today.

“Me and Morgan (Shepherd) got together there towards the end and it messed our car up a bit. Give credit to Greg (Conner, crew chief) and the crew for making the repairs so fast and making it so we could finish the race.

“Finishing 22nd after all that took place today – we’ll take it.”

The native of McKinney, Texas and team head to the Midwestern track loaded with optimism and readiness for the weekend’s events.

For this race, the team has Best Western Plus Marquis Des Moines Airport Hotel on board as an associate sponsor. Fans are invited to the Bennigan’s located on the lower level of the hotel for an autograph session on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. Richardson will be joined by fellow drivers. Jennifer Jo Cobb and Morgan Shepherd to meet and greet fans.

Fast Facts: Richardson, 29, will be making his 85th career NNS start and 16th of the 2011 season. To date in 2011, his best finish of 20th took place at Richmond International Speedway. The No. 23 is locked in via the Owner’s Points, so there’s no pressure to qualify in on time leaving driver and team plenty of time to dial in their Chevrolet through the practice sessions.

Track Facts: This will be his third start at the short track of Iowa where he’s had finishes of 23rd and 22nd, respectively, while completing an impressive 98.2 percent of the laps contested.

Tune in for the Win: There will be two practice sessions on Friday, with the first taking place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., than 6 to 7:30 p.m. – neither of those are aired. Saturday action begins with qualifying at 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, then followed by race coverage beginning at 7 p.m. Listen in on MRN Radio or Sirius XM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90, as well, for all 250 laps of action.

I’m looking forward to getting back behind the wheel of the No. 23 for R3 Motorsports. We have a good stretch of races coming up here where we hope to be very competitive. It all starts with this race here in Iowa.

“I like this track because you can drive the low and high sides to get your car just right. Racing under the lights here is pretty cool because these fans get all pumped up for when we race there at Iowa – day or night. The energy from this crowd is pretty intense.

“Hope you all come out to the Bennigan’s located on the ground floor of the Best Western at the Des Moines Airport on Friday night. Stop by, say hi, get an autograph and have your picture taken with us. That’s one of the best parts about this sport is meeting the fans in a casual atmosphere.”

Shepherd has partnered with The Salvation Army and donated the hood of his #89 Nationwide Series race car at Daytona to assist the organization on a national level during difficult economic times.

“This is a real honor to represent The Salvation Army,” says Shepherd. “The economy is tough right now. We’re a small race team without a major sponsor and it’s extremely difficult, but at least we have food, clothing, and a roof over our head. There are millions in our country right now who have lost their jobs, their homes, and their spirit. The demand is very high and we thought we could take our ministry on wheels to a higher level and assist The Salvation Army when they need it the most. I’ve been blessed in so many ways over my career and this is a way of giving back in honor of our fans and supporters. We’ll do the best we can to promote The Salvation Army and educate people on what The Salvation Army really does to assist the poor and the hungry.”

“We don’t have much,” says Shepherd, “but what we have, we can donate to The Salvation Army.”

The Salvation Army is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. The Salvation Army food service programs report more people are seeking food assistance, while donations have decreased in the past year. Shepherd will carry the highly recognizable ‘Red Shield’ and The Salvation Army brand promise ‘Doing The Most Good’ on the hood of his #89 Nationwide Series race car. The Salvation Army will also be a primary part of the race team’s website throughout the year and an associate partner with the car at no charge to them.
About The Salvation Army:

Ingram, who served as crew chief for K-Automotive Racing’s #26 program in 2010 has been around the garage for quite a few years. Ingram also worked as a crew chief for McDonald Motorsports’ #81 program in 2009.

“David is a young guy but he has a lot of racing experience and most of his experience has come from his working with smaller teams, which is good,” Shepherd said. “He has been brought up racing with a small budget and limited crew members so he is one of those crew chiefs who can work on the car and understands that our people have to be able to do more than one thing for us to be successful.”

Shepherd said his 2010 crew chief Gary Ravan is still with the Faith Motorsports program and has assumed other duties in the two-car shop which will feature Shepherd’s #89 and Brett Rowe’s #55 Nationwide entries.

An announcement about who will fill the crew chief role for Rowe’s program and other crew assignments will be forthcoming, the team said.

Fans wishing to learn more about Ingram can access an interview done while he was crew chief of the #81 team here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ8JOilvgNY.

Ford Racing enters the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season needing only one victory to reach 600. Over the next two weeks, leading up to the Daytona 500, Ford Racing will present a recap of the milestone wins and other tidbits that have helped shape the manufacturer’s history in the sport. This week, Ford Racing looks at the bizarre and ironic nature of Morgan Shepherd’s win that gave Ford 400 series victories.

Morgan Shepherd - Wood Bros Racing

The 1993 NASCAR season was off to a flying start as three different drivers had made their way to victory lane in the first three weeks. Dale Jarrett won the season-opening Daytona 500 while Rusty Wallace and Davey Allison came away with checkered flags at Rockingham and Richmond, respectively.

Little did anyone know that by the time the series got to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the fourth race of the season, the real winner would be Mother Nature.

The Motorcraft Quality Parts 500 was scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 14, 1993, but a blizzard that would eventually be called the ‘Storm of the Century’ pounded the Atlanta area with 6-8 inches of snow making racing impossible.

“That’s the race that was snowed out and all of us got stuck down there,” recalled Len Wood, co-owner of the No. 21 Motorcraft Ford. “We all stayed in our hotels for another two days before we could get home, and then we came back later that week and ran the race on a Saturday.”

As an estimated 82,000 fans came to the track, they were greeted by souvenir rigs that sported freshly produced t-shirts proclaiming, “I Survived the Atlanta Blizzard 500.” They got in their seats and watched Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt lead the field to the green flag.

But it was Mark Martin who laid claim to being the dominant car as he drove his No. 6 Valvoline Ford to the front. He led 140 of the first 225 laps, but that’s when his engine blew up and ended his day. That left a handful of challengers, including Morgan Shepherd, who survived the blizzard by driving home in his Ford rental car and returning a couple of days later.

“All they talked about was how fast Mark was, but our pit stops were slow. We really had the fastest car after about the halfway point, but it was like nobody knew we were that fast because I was coming from so far back,” recalled Shepherd. “When Mark blew up I was running second at the time, but I was closing in.”

Just when it looked like Shepherd was in position to take command, he had a tire go down coming off turn four and that forced him back to pit road ahead of schedule.

“We had to pit eight laps too soon,” said Shepherd. “After I took off, Eddie got on the radio and said, ‘Morgan, if there’s any way you can save gas, we need to stretch it eight laps.’ Our car was so fast that I drafted off other cars and really didn’t use much throttle. A lot of people don’t know this, but we went 110 miles, drove it into the winner’s circle, and then drove it down to the gas pumps and still didn’t run out of gas. I don’t know that anybody had ever gone 110 miles at Atlanta before, but we did.”

Another thing many people didn’t know at the time was that the Wood Brothers were getting some helpful advice from none other than the reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion.

“As fate would have it, Alan Kulwicki had wrecked out of the race and he was watching the race from out pits. He was standing up on a little welding box and he started talking to us about when we were planning on stopping,” said Len Wood. “We told we were planning on not stopping and he said, ‘Well, you can’t make it.’ So a little bit later he came running over in almost a panic and said, ‘Hey, if you can make it, you need to start backing him off right now.’ So we started backing Morgan off a little bit earlier than we anticipated and we ended up making it on fuel.”

Shepherd, who was 51 years old at the time, took the lead with 12 laps to go and cruised across the finish line to win the fourth and final race of his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career and it was by a whopping margin of 23.50 seconds. Ironically, three of Shepherd’s wins came at AMS.

“There are some things in life that you just can’t explain and this falls into that category,” said Shepherd. “Atlanta wasn’t my favorite race track. Darlington was my favorite race track and while I always ran good there, I never won. Most people would think I’d say Atlanta because I had three wins, but it just always seemed to work out that our car was very fast. I won there three times with three totally different setups.

“It was just an honor driving for the Wood Brothers. I’ve driven for several top teams and they were like real family. They treated everybody that way,” continued Shepherd. “When people came to their shop, the atmosphere and the way they treated you was different from any other race team. When they took you in, if they liked you, you were family. That’s the way it was and that’s the way it still is because they still treat me like family to this day.”

Sadly, Kulwicki’s gas-mileage assist was quickly forgotten because just a couple of weeks later he was killed in an accident when the plane he was traveling in crashed en route to Tri-Cities Regional Airport near Bristol Motor Speedway.

“He was there helping us one week in Atlanta, and then he had his plane accident on April 1,” said Len Wood, who said the team has a picture of Kulwicki standing on that welding box in his Hooters jacket currently hanging in the team’s racing museum in Stuart, Va.

FORD FUN FACT

The Wood Brothers have 97 all-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins with 16 different drivers. David Pearson ranks first on the team list with 43 wins followed by Cale Yarborough, 13; Neil Bonnett, 9; Marvin Panch, 8; A.J. Foyt, 5; Glen Wood and Dan Gurney, 4; Speedy Thompson and Kyle Petty, 2; Donnie Allison, Curtis Turner, Tiny Lund, Buddy Baker, Dale Jarrett, Morgan Shepherd and Elliott Sadler, 1.
