The two-time series winner and the Phoenix Racing crew will be trying to regain the momentum they had earlier in the season. Newman finished second in May at Dover and fifth at Charlotte, and eight in July at Daytona. In his last two starts for the team, however, Newman has finished 25th at Watkins Glen and in the 36th spot at Chicago.
“These last few weeks have been disappointing to say the least,” Newman said. “We had a good car last weekend at Watkins Glen and thought we were on our way to having a decent day, but that all ended with a few laps to go – it seems like we can’t win here lately with this No. 1 car. It’s frustrating and I know it’s heart-breaking for the guys that work on these cars.”
One thing Newman has going for him is the fact that he enjoys racing at Michigan. Since racing at the 2-mile track, he’s posted multiple wins in both Nationwide and Sprint Cup.
