No. 33 Longhorn Moist Snuff Chevrolet Silverado

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race 8 of 25

WinStar World Casino 400K

IN THE LOOP: According to NASCAR’s Loop Data Statistics, Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 truck have led more laps than any other Truck Series driver at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) over the last four Truck Series events held at the 1.5-mile track. Hornaday has led 443 laps versus his closest rival Mike Skinner who has led 400 laps.

1.5-MILE MASTER: Hornaday has made 66 starts on 1.5-mile tracks across the country. Out of those 66 starts he currently has nine wins, second to Todd Bodine who has collected 10 wins on 1.5-mile tracks.

“I’m not sure why we are so good on the 1.5-mile tracks,” said Hornaday. “I used to be known for getting around the short tracks, but recently all the guys at Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) have done a lot of research and we have done quite a bit of testing to make ourselves better. I think the Truck Series schedule is very equal with short tracks, 1.5-mile tracks and superspeedways so you have to be good at all of them. Over the last few years our 1.5-mile program has just come a long way and I’ve been the lucky guy who gets to climb behind the wheel of the KHI trucks and make it to victory lane.”

ONE OF THE FEW: Hornaday finds himself amongst an elite group of Truck Series drivers at Texas Motor Speedway. He joins Brendan Gaughan, Todd Bodine, Jack Sprague and Dennis Setzer as multi-time winners at TMS. He and Gaughan are the only two drivers who have ever won back-to-back races at the 1.5-mile venue Gaughan won four races in a row in 2002 and 2003, and Hornaday swept the spring and fall events in 2008.

GOLF ANYONE? During the short, one-week break in the Truck Series schedule, Hornaday joined KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick and other NASCAR stars for the John Paul Linville (DeLana Harvick’s late father) Memorial Golf Tournament at the Oak Hollow Golf Course in High Point, N.C., to raise money for the newly formed Kevin Harvick Foundation.

“I’m not really a good golfer,” laughed Hornaday. “They had a last minute cancellation and asked if I would come join them at the tournament. It is for a really good cause and I’m proud of Kevin and everyone involved for putting on such a great event. We hit a few balls, but we mainly joked and had a great time amongst our team and the other golfers. ”

AFTER A STRONG RUN AT CHARLOTTE, WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FOR TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY?

“I’m really excited to head back to Texas. We have run really well there in the past. I think we have a good set-up and will run well. For me, Texas has always been hit or miss. We had back-to-back wins in 2008, but really I’ve been very hit or miss at Texas. I’m looking forward to a good weekend and hopefully our first win of 2010.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will take chassis No. 040 to Texas Motor Speedway. Chassis No. 040 competed three weeks ago at Dover (Del.) International Speedway where after spending the majority of the rae in the top five, the No. 33 team experienced a vapor lock issue late in the race and were relegated to a 12th-place finish.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Two weeks ago at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, the No. 33 team scored their fourth top-three finish in the last five events, coming home third. Hornaday led 28 laps during the 134-lap event, but his truck became too tight late in the race to make a move on eventual winner Kyle Busch.

“We had a decent truck in the beginning, but we just dialed ourselves out of it on the one run,” said Hornaday after the race. “We got it pretty close at one time. I’m not sure if the track changed on us, I think it did, but we just went the wrong way with our adjustments. I was just hanging on at the end. I had heard the truck in front of me was out of gas, so I just rode around under caution, but the fuel pick up on these trucks is on the right side and we just didn’t have enough fuel near the pick up to take off. Once I got down the back straight-a-way, she took off. Maybe we need to run a road course pick up here. It was just a tough day all around.”

Ron Hornaday Jr – Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images for NASCAR

Hornaday began the Dover 200 from the sixth position. By lap three the No. 33 truck had moved into the third position directly behind Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) teammate Elliott Sadler. The first caution of the afternoon waved on lap 19. Hornaday reported to crew chief Doug George he was a little tight, but pretty good. The No. 33 team decided to stay out and retain track position.

Hornaday continued to run second to pole-sitter Kyle Busch who had pulled out to over a one-second lead. The second caution of the afternoon waved on lap 52. The No. 33 truck was still tight. Hornaday came to pit road for the first scheduled pit stop of the day on lap 54 for four tires, fuel and an air-pressure adjustment. Quick work by the No. 33 team allowed Hornaday to retain the second position for the restart on lap 58. On lap 60, Hornaday snuck past Busch to assume the lead and gain five valuable bonus points. A lap later, Busch reassumed the lead as Hornaday reported that the No. 33 truck was now too free.

Trying to change his lines looking to adapt to his truck’s loose condition, Hornaday rode in the second position until the third caution waved on lap 85. The No. 33 truck had moved from a tight condition to an extremely loose condition. The No. 33 team brought Hornaday down pit road for his second scheduled pit stop of the afternoon. The team again took four tires, fuel and made another air-pressure adjustment. During the stop, the team discovered that Hornaday had picked up a large napkin, blocking his grill opening. Removing the debris, Hornaday restarted in the fifth position on lap 90, due to varying tire strategies by the lead trucks.

Not happy with the changes to the truck, Hornaday hung in the fifth position until he was able to get by Tayler Malsam who had taken two tires under the previous yellow flag for fourth. The No. 33 team gave up the third position to bring Hornaday down pit road for the third and final time on lap 124 under the sixth caution of the evening. The team changed four tires and made a wedge adjustment. Hornaday restarted on lap 127 from the 10th position after several trucks remained on the race track, while others took two tires only. By lap 142, Hornaday had moved back into the top five, but was still fighting a very loose-handling truck.

A rash of late cautions brought up debate in the No. 33 pit stall on whether to come down pit road for the two additional right-side tires the team had left, but track position was too vital to give up. On lap 173, Hornaday’s KHI teammate Sadler experienced a blown right-front tire while running second, crashing hard into turn one. Nervous about tire wear, Hornaday radioed his spotter, Rick Carelli, and said that he was “just hanging on.”

Primed for another top-five finish, Hornaday was making his way to the checkered flag when fourth-place Johnny Sauter blew a right-front tire and careened into the wall. On the lap 197 restart, Johnny Benson’s second-place truck failed to take off on the restart stacking up the field and sending the Dover 200 into a green-white-checkered scenario. Hornaday made his final restart of the evening from the sixth position. However, as the green flag waved the No. 33 truck would not accelerate due to a fuel pick up problem, stacking up the top lane. Once on the straight-a-way the No. 33 truck’s intake was finally able to get fuel which allowed Hornaday to finish the race in the 12th position.

Aric Almirola went on to win his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race followed by James Buscher, Justin Lofton, Ricky Carmichael and Todd Bodine.

Hornaday remains fourth in the Truck Series point standings 125 markers out of first. The Truck Series returns next weekend at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway for the seventh race of the 2010 season.

(May 3, 2010) — Ron Hornaday must have had a little luck on his side at Kansas Speedway, as the pole sitter endured rain, a fender rub and a nearly race-ending wreck to eventually cross the finish line in second position. The No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Longhorn team worked endlessly to try and become the first back-to-back Truck Series winners at Kansas Speedway, but they fell one position short.

“Wow,” said Hornaday following the race. “What a day! We had an awesome No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet. There at the end I was chasing Johnny [Sauter] down and we caught him a few times. I was trying to use the lapped trucks to help me get past him, but when the two trucks ahead of us got to racing side-by-side my truck planted the nose and jumped sideways on me. I was thinking ‘Oh no Johnny look out’ as I slid up into him. Fortunately, he hit the wall and straightened us both out. That is definitely a clip for the highlight reels. We had a few issues today with a left-rear fender rub, but our truck was so good we just kept moving up through the field. After Johnny and I got together, I had used up my right-rear tire and we didn’t have anything left for them. We will take second; it’s a good points day for us.”

Hornaday scored his 25th career pole on Saturday, joining Jack Sprague and Mike Skinner as the only three drivers to have recorded that Truck Series milestone. Hornaday made the decision to start from the outside lane, which proved to be the right call as he jumped out in front of the field leading the first seven laps before the first caution flag waved. Hornaday continued to lead through the second caution flag at lap 16. However, when the third caution flag waved on lap 26, the team chose to bring him down pit road for four tires and fuel. The No. 81 truck of David Starr chose to take on two tires, grabbing the lead as the race returned to green flag competition on lap 31. Hornaday restarted the race from the second position.

Ron Hornaday Jr – Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images for NASCAR

Hornaday quickly moved back to the top spot. Almost immediately after taking the lead, Hornaday came on the radio and told crew chief Doug George that something was going on with the left-rear tire. After further inspection it was determined that the left-rear fender was rubbing on the tire, causing a slight plume of smoke. Under the next caution period Hornaday brought the No. 33 truck down pit road for maintenance on the left-rear fender to pull it away from the tire. Hornaday was forced to restart from the 27th position on lap 39. Immediately, the No. 33 made quick work of the field and by lap 50, Hornaday had already made his way back into the top 10. By the halfway point on lap 84, Hornaday had moved back into the third position. On lap 92, Hornaday came down pit road for a round of scheduled green-flag pit stops. Following the stop, Hornaday radioed the crew that the left-rear fender was rubbing again. Unsure of the cause of the rub, the team became concerned but the tire smoke eventually went away.

With rain looming in the distance every truck showed a sense of urgency and was on a mission to gain as many positions as possible before the storm hit. Hornaday retook the lead on lap 106 and the rain came on lap 111 with Hornaday at the front of the field. A torrential downpour ensued as teams ran for cover. The storm lasted only a few minutes and gave way to clear and sunny skies. The race was delayed for a little over an hour. During the red flag, the No. 33 team gave way to concern about the left-rear fender which continued to rub the tire, making the decision to pit once the race resumed. When the red flag was lifted on lap 115, the No. 33 team came back down pit road. The field followed as everyone made their final pit stop of the day. The No. 33 took on four tires and fuel. The stop was lengthy as work to the left-rear fender continued. Hornaday restarted the race on lap 119 from the 14th position.

By lap 121, Hornaday was scored in the fifth position. By lap 130, he was on the bumper of Johnny Sauter for the lead. Hornaday made several runs at Sauter, but could not clear the pass. Hornaday made his final attempt on lap 145 when he and Sauter got side-by-side. Two lapped trucks in front of the leaders were involved in their own heated side-by-side battle, causing Hornaday’s truck to dance sideways into Sauter.

Both trucks ended up in a four-wheel slide with the back end of Sauter’s truck hitting the outside wall and bouncing back into Hornaday, straightening both trucks out on the race track. Both trucks kept pace not losing a single position. After the slide, Hornaday had used up everything his right-rear tire had and was not able to make another run at Sauter for the win. Hornaday finished in the second position followed by Todd Bodine, Brian Ickler and Johnny Benson. Hornaday moved up two positions in the drivers point standings to fourth only 97 markers away from leader Timothy Peters.

The Truck Series returns to action on May 14th at Dover (Del.) International Speedway.

(March 7, 2010) — After a disappointing start to the 2010 season four-time Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Longhorn Moist Snuff Chevrolet Silverado team came to Atlanta Motor Speedway looking to rally back.

A pole-winning run in qualifying gave confidence to the team heading into Saturday’s E-Z-GO 200. Hornaday led the field to the green flag, however on lap one, Kyle Busch and Matt Crafton pushed their trucks to the edge leaving Hornaday three wide in the middle groove. Hornaday tried to hold his line, but cold tires loosened up his truck. He and Busch touched slightly bending in his left-rear fender resulting in a tire rub. The team debated on making an unscheduled pit stop but after a few laps the tire smoke dissipated.

Ron Hornaday Jr – Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images for NASCAR

On lap 11 Hornaday assumed the lead from Busch but for only one lap as his truck began to get increasingly loose. Running in the third position, Hornaday continued to make laps as he patiently waited for a pit stop while Kevin Harvick and Busch battled for the lead. On lap 23, Hornaday’s left-rear tire exploded sending him hard into the wall between turns three and four. The No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet sustained major rear-end damage. The team worked feverishly but the damage was too great to repair and allow the No. 33 to return to the track. Hornaday was credited with a 34th place finish.

Harvick, Hornaday’s KHI teammate, went on to win the E-Z-GO 200 for his seventh career Truck Series victory. Busch finished second followed by Aric Almirola, Steve Wallace and Todd Bodine.

The Truck Series returns to action March 27th at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway for the Kroger 250.

(November 25, 2009)— Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Longhorn team went to Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway as the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champions. The race prior to that at Phoenix International Raceway, Hornaday became only the second driver in Truck Series history to clinch the championship before the final race, Greg Biffle clinched at Phoenix in 2000. Ironically, both Biffle and Hornaday clinched on Friday the 13th in their respective seasons. Even though the driver’s championship had been decided the No. 33 team still had some unfinished business to complete as they raced Kyle Busch and the No. 51 truck team for the owner’s championship. With a solid eighth-place finish Hornaday was able to hold off Busch who had tire trouble late in the race to win the driver and owner’s championship and become the first four-time Truck Series champion.

“I just can’t believe it,” said Hornaday following the race. “This has been a dream season. To win five races in a row, then win the championship not only for myself but for KHI as a whole is pretty awesome. There are so many people to thank, Longhorn, Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), Turtle Wax, Copart for coming on board, Georgia Boot, Rheem, Hungry Man, Miller Welders, Merit Pro, Wiley X, all of our great partners who made this year happen. I can’t think Kevin and DeLana (Harvick) enough for all that they have done. They give me the best equipment to drive hands down. I’m really lucky to be able to be apart of it all. It’s so cool for me to be standing here as the champion and Kevin to be in victory lane. It says a lot about the team work and effort everyone puts into this truck program at KHI. Wow, I just can’t believe it this is awesome.”

Hornaday started the Ford 200 from the fourth position, immediately behind boss Kevin Harvick in the No. 4 Georgia Boot Chevrolet. As the race started Hornaday battled a loose-handling truck and tried to find a line his truck would work well in as he battled Matt Crafton for the fifth position. While Hornaday fought with his truck, his KHI teammate Harvick moved into the lead and began to pull away from the field. The first caution of the race waved on lap 31. The No. 33 team brought the truck to pit road on lap 33 for four tires and an air-pressure adjustment. The team had a problem with the jack on the right side resulting in a slow stop. The following lap the team came back down pit road for fuel and was able to gain back a few positions lost on pit road during the previous stop. On the restart on lap 36 Hornaday was scored in the eighth position.

The air-pressure adjustment helped the No. 33 truck as another caution waved on lap 38; Hornaday had gained two positions on the restart moving him to sixth. Hornaday tried multiple lines on the race track, but as the tires wore, the No. 33 truck continued to turn to the loose side. The third caution waved on lap 59. The No. 33 team brought the truck down pit road for four tires, another air-pressure adjustment and came back the following lap for fuel. Several of the leaders chose different pit strategies taking two tires, fuel only and some stayed on the race track, miring Hornaday back in the 11th position for the restart on lap 63. By lap 72, Hornaday had moved back into the seventh position and Harvick had made his way back to the lead.

On lap 86, Busch cut down a tire and was forced to pit road. Three laps later he was back on pit road for a tire violation. Hornaday continued to struggle with the handling of his truck as it would go from loose to tight and back to loose all around the track. On lap 115, the No. 33 truck came to pit road during a round of scheduled green-flag pit stops for fuel only. The last caution of the race waved on lap 129 forcing the season finale for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to end with a green-white-checkered finish. The No. 33 was scored in the 10th position at the time of the caution and made the decision to come down pit road for four tires. The tires paid off as Hornaday moved up two positions to take the checkered flag in the eighth position to solidify the 2009 NASCAR Camping World championship for himself and KHI, while Harvick went on to win his second consecutive Truck Series race in as many weeks.

The championship marks Hornaday’s fourth title recording championship wins in 1996, 1998, 2007 and 2009. This is the second championship for Kevin and DeLana Harvick and KHI. Over the course of the 2009 season the No. 33 team recorded six wins, 15 top-five and 20 top-10 finishes. Hornaday also recorded four poles and set a record for consecutive wins with five in a row joining Richard Petty and Bobby Allison as only the third driver to achieve this benchmark.

Miami – (November 20, 2009) – It is official, Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 Longhorn Silverado, has won the 2009 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCWTS) driver championship to become the first four-time Series champion.

With his eighth (8th) place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Hornaday and the No. 33 Silverado team led by Rick Ren delivered the 2009 NCWTS owners championship for the second time to Kevin and DeLana Harvick, co-owners of Kevin Harvick, Inc.(KHI).

To cap off the season, Harvick claimed his third NCWTS win of the season taking his No. 4 Georgia Boots Silverado to victory lane. He led four times for 108 of 136 laps.

Hornaday’s first title came in 1996. He claimed his second in 1998 and third, also behind the wheel of a KHI Silverado, in 2007. He holds the top spot in number of race wins in the Series with 45 to date. Rick Ren is also the winningest NCWTS crew chief with a total of 27 trips to victory lane.

In claiming both the 2009 NCWTS driver and owner crowns, KHI claimed nine (9) victories this season. Hornaday captured his title with six (6) wins this season. Harvick contributed to KHI’s owners title with three trips to victory lane.

Hornaday’s championship is the 10th time a Silverado driver has won the NCWTS top-prize in the 15-year history of the Series, more than any other manufacturer.

“On behalf of everyone at Chevrolet, congratulations to Ron, Kevin and DeLana on their outstanding season that netted them both the driver and owner championships in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series,” said Brent Dewar, Vice President, Chevrolet Global. “For Ron to become the only four-time NCWTS champion with his Rick Ren-led team is a remarkable achievement. There is a great sense of pride at Chevrolet that all of his 45 wins have come behind the wheel of a Chevy Silverado.”

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards Silverado, finished second in tonight’s race and in the standings after a season-long battle with Hornaday. It is the best final point standings finish for Crafton in his 10-year NCWTS career.

Johnny Sauter, No. 13 Fun Sand/Rodney Atkins/Curb Records Silverado, captured the Raybestos Rookie of the Year award as well as finishing sixth in the overall standings.

“It is a proud moment for us to congratulate Ron Hornaday on his fourth NCWTS championship and Kevin and DeLana Harvick on their second owners crown,” said Mark Kent, GM Racing Manager. “With the outstanding performances of the ThorSport drivers Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter, Team Chevy captured three of the top-six positions in the final standings.

“As a result of the 10 victories captured by Ron, Kevin and Johnny, Chevy Silverado continues to be the winningest truck in the Series.”

Ron, Rick, Kevin and DeLana and the entire No. 33 KHI Chevy Silverado team will be honored at the championship celebration on Monday, November 23 at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.

November 20, 2009

An interview with:

KEVIN HARVICK

ERNIE COPE

RON HORNADAY JR.

RICK REN

THE MODERATOR: We’ve got quite a group up here in front of us. We’re going to roll into the race winner for the Ford 200. That is Kevin Harvick, he drives the No. 4, Georgia Boot Chevrolet with crew chief Ernie Cope, and also joining him up on the podium is our 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion for the fourth time. He sets an unprecedented record in that series. No one has ever won four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championships, and he’s the first driver to do that. And that’s Ron Hornaday Jr., driver of the No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet, with crew chief, Rick Ren. Certainly owners Kevin Harvick and DeLana Harvick are here with them to celebrate in that.

First off, the race winner, let’s hear from Kevin Harvick. Great victory for you tonight. The third win in your sixth top 10 in 2009. Back to back victories, congratulations, Kevin.

KEVIN HARVICK: Thank you. Just you know it was a great weekend for us. The truck was flawless. Really two weeks in a row it’s been flawless now. We built two new trucks to try to get a head start on next year.

Our main goal was to go out and after Ron had clinched the driver’s championship the last two weeks to lead the most laps and win the race, and it’s not very often you can go out and accomplish that. So we had a good weekend and the guys have worked hard.
And Georgia Boot came on at the last minute to sponsor the truck, so it’s been a great weekend. Lock up the championship last week, and lock up the owner’s championship this week makes it a lot of fun.

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations. You have your crew chief over there, Ernie Cope. Your thoughts about tonight’s victory?

ERNIE COPE: It was pretty dominating. Only thing I was worried about was a caution at the end, and it did happen, but the truck was fast enough it didn’t matter.

THE MODERATOR: Speaking of domination tonight, Kevin Harvick certainly defined that. He had a perfect driver rating of 150 tonight in the race. That’s the first time, I think, in your career in the Truck Series, Kevin, that you’ve accomplished that. It doesn’t get any better than that. So congratulations on a perfect driver rating of 150.

KEVIN HARVICK: Yeah, I don’t really know how that works. But it sounds good.

THE MODERATOR: Various components go into it. But it’s certainly a measure of just how dominant you were tonight. Congratulations.

KEVIN HARVICK: Thank you.

THE MODERATOR: Let’s hear from our 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. He may have wrapped it up this week, but he was hard charging out there tonight. But, Ron, how does it feel to win four championships in this series as competitive as it is, and here you are with your fourth championship? Talk about that?

RON HORNADAY JR.: It would have been really bad if we did not win that owner’s championship. This team really deserves it. Kevin and DeLana have given us the equipment to do the stuff that we do. Five wins in a row is remarkable, and that’s because of Rick Ren and all the guys and Kevin and DeLana letting us build new trucks week in and week out.

I went up there probably two months ago and I had like 11 trucks done. I went back up there two weeks ago and only had four trucks. So Kevin keeps selling my trucks and building new ones. I’m not going to complain because they’re faster than anything you drive.

At my age you get too get in these rocket ships. I’m still having fun. Other than this weekend and last weekend, I’ve been sicker than a dog. But to come down here and win four. It will hit me as soon as we get a cold beverage over there at the motorhome. Gatorade.

THE MODERATOR: Rick Ren, certainly not your first time around the block with Mr. Hornaday. You guys won the championship in 2007. And here again in 2009. I think this is a great statistic here. You’re the all time series leader in crew chief wins with 27. That’s terrific. Had five different drivers in nine seasons that have won those races for you, but congratulations, Rick, and how does it feel to be a champion again in 2009?

RICK REN: It’s kind of undescribable. It’s a valiant effort of all the members of our race team. The guys, Ron and myself, we worked really hard this year to not have any shortcomings, because we came up just a little bit short last year, so we worked really hard other all areas that we could control.

I’ve just got to thank the whole thing. Kevin and DeLana with the opportunity, Ron with his drivability, and my guys with their work ethic. And that’s what it takes to build a championship team.

Q. Ron, would you detail what kind of ailments you’ve been through this week and just how difficult it’s been for you tonight particularly?

RON HORNADAY JR.: It’s just been flu symptoms. Just it all started when I got off the airplane. You know, my mother in law’s been sick, and we went to the hospital and seen her. Then we jumped on an airplane. Must have gotten the flu or something. The tickle in the throat, the head ready to blow off. You want the whole deal? The drippy nose, the runny (laughing).

The only good thing about it I didn’t get the fever or anything. They say if you get the fever, you have the swine flu. So I didn’t get that. Sit down here in good old Miami for three days, sitting in the motorhome sweating to death.

Q. You talked a little bit out on pit road about the final restart. What was the decision like there at the end? Was there any talk about whether or not you were going to come in or was it just a no brainer?

KEVIN HARVICK: I thought it was a no brainer. I thought that the tires, you know, were probably to the end of their life. And with the track position that we had, I felt like there was enough lap cars in between us that were going to pit, you know, to make sure that we could put four tires on it.

And I saw the 17 stay out, but everybody behind me came. So it really worked out good. We had four tires, they had no tires, and we were able to get a good restart. He had old tires and just spun the tires there at the end and moved down the block. As soon as he moved back up, I just drove by him.

So it was a good night on pit road. We didn’t have any mistakes on pit road, and, you know, it all worked out in the end.

Q. You were emotional a couple of years ago with winning your first title. How can you put this one in perspective? How much better is it maybe because you won the race, Ron won the title last week and then clinched the owner’s title for you. I don’t want to say does it make it sweeter, but can you compare the two?

KEVIN HARVICK: I think we look at them as equal from a team standpoint, you don’t want to lose anything from an owner’s championship to a driver’s championship. And I think everybody knew how important it was to go out and win that.
I’ve been a part of the celebrations where you have to share the stage with somebody from the owner’s championship side of it, and it’s not you don’t feel fulfilled. And I think with the year that they’ve had, you know, it feels like it’s a fulfilled year.

I mean, you know, we knew that I knew that my job was to go out and try to lead the most laps and beat kyle. I thought that barring some crazy circumstances, that they knew what they needed to do and could make that happen and it all worked out.
We’ve seen it all night workout. We’ve been on the other side of the fence last year. You just never know. That’s what makes the series so exciting.

I don’t need to tell you guys, and you all know, but it’s more of a there’s a lot of personal relationship between Ron and myself and, you know, it it’s very gratifying to see him be able to win. That means as much to me as winning the races or winning the championships is to see Ron happy and winning races and winning the championship. You know, the personal relationship is more important than, you know, anything else.

Q. People have talked about this often throughout your stint in the Truck Series. But what is it when you run well in a truck race, why does it always seem like the momentum tends to carry over throughout the weekend?

KEVIN HARVICK: Yeah, I don’t know. I race at all the racetracks that I like. You know, I think every time we show up we have good trucks. That makes it a lot of fun. You kind of cherry pick the places that you like to go.

So nine times out of ten, the Cup car’s going to go well. The momentum definitely didn’t carry over last week, and we had two good days to lead up to the Sunday race. But it definitely doesn’t hurt. It makes you feel good from a confidence side that you can go out and win races. You know, it makes it a lot of fun, so it makes you pretty relaxed for the rest of the weekend.

Q. How do you have so much success when you’ve got a grizzled old grandfather for a driver?

RON HORNADAY JR.: He’s as old as I am.

RICK REN: Yeah, I’m actually a little bit older.

KEVIN HARVICK: Between the two of them they’re over 100.

RICK REN: Yeah (laughing). You know, it’s just we’re both first of all, we respect each other. And respect is a big word in this business. Second of all, you know, him and I just have an agreement. He tells me what it’s doing and he wants me to fix it, and we work it out.

We don’t argue with each other or fight with each other. We just go out and do our thing, you know. Everybody growls at each other once in a while, but that’s part of this business. I don’t know. It’s just fun. I think we get along great.

RON HORNADAY JR.: Now. Ten years ago we wouldn’t have.

RICK REN: Yeah, ten years ago we probably wouldn’t have.

Q. Did you know that Kyle had blown the tire and was a couple of laps down or did they not tell you?

RON HORNADAY JR.: Yeah, I seen Kyle. Trust me I had been watching him all night. Yeah, it still didn’t change my strategy. Rick and I, I told him what the truck was doing, and he fixed exactly what I told him. We went a little too far.

We were on the same deal, and we know the tires were, you know, Kyle made the right choice of staying out and just putting fuel only because he’s won the race three or four times having tires in the pits when the other guys didn’t.

So strategy didn’t work this time. We blew the right front. That’s what with Rick and I did last year, we got tires and made up for it, and we lost. So, yeah. They kept me informed. I kept yelling at how many laps to go because I wanted to get out pretty quick.

Q. I know the past two weeks you’ve been thinking big picture, but how does it feel to get beat two weeks in a row by your car owner? Is?

RON HORNADAY JR.: Yeah, it’s my truck. Yeah. It’s I’ll finish second every week. I’ll keep getting championships. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to win.

Kyle, when he shows up here, he brings the bar up that much higher, makes us work that much harder. Same deal with Kevin when he shows up. That’s what makes this series so great.

Anybody can win any given day, and NASCAR with the venue tracks we’re going to, different drivers, young and old did I say that again? It just makes it so much fun.

So Kevin beat me. I’ve got to go do my homework. I’ll give him the truck this week. He had a better truck than I did. You own them both, does it matter (laughing)? I got to slow down once in a while, don’t I?

THE MODERATOR: Okay. Congratulations on tonight’s race win. Or this season’s championship as both a driver and owner. Congratulations.

An interview with:

MATT CRAFTON

THE MODERATOR: We have our second place finisher in tonight’s race. He also finished second in this year’s Championship points race. That’s Matt Crafton. He drives the No. 88 Australian Gold Chevrolet. Matt, you had a good season, had a good race tonight. Your thoughts about how things unfolded?

MATT CRAFTON: They unfolded all right. That 4 truck, he’s been tough here the last few races. They brought two really good trucks the last two races and we’ve came up short tonight.

But we had a really, really good truck. I knew at the end last night we had a really good truck. The balance on the truck and the race trim was really good.

And I honestly didn’t know how it was going to qualify, because we tried to do a qualifying run last night and we were horrible loose. So after we qualified where we did, I knew we had a shot to be able to have track position.

Q. The grand picture with KHI, with Ron, and now with Kevin winning back to back races, what was that like in terms of trying to just keep up with them? Is there any kind of consolation in being as close to them tonight and finishing second?

MATT CRAFTON: It’s really good. But there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to beat them. We outran them 33. It just shows. KHI they built two brand new trucks, a brand new truck for Phoenix, and a brand new truck for here. It just shows how good their stuff was these last two races with Kevin, that’s exactly what we’ve planned on doing.

We’ve sold a few trucks here already at the end of the year, and we’re building new stuff for next year. We’ve kind of got some ideas, and here are some of the ideas of what they’re doing.

We’ve got a direction we need to go to make our stuff better, and that’s what we plan on doing in making a really good run for the championship next year. I mean, this team I can’t thank Duke and Rhonda, Thorson and Menards and Australian Gold.

Each and every year if you look at our points since ’05, every year we’ve gotten better and better. I mean, Top 5s, it’s been really good to see the team come from as far as they’ve come.

No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 25 of 25 — Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway

2009 CHAMPION FACTS: Last week at Phoenix International Raceway, Hornaday clinched the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship. Hornaday became the second driver in Truck Series history to clinch the championship prior to the last race of the year (Greg Biffle clinched at Phoenix in 2000). The 51year old also became the oldest champion in any of NASCAR’s touring series. He now joins Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon as only the fourth driver in NASCAR history to win four championships in one of NASCAR’s elite divisions.

250th START: Ron Hornaday is arguably the most recognizable driver in the Truck Series. When he climbs behind the wheel of the No. 33 Longhorn Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Chevrolet this weekend at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway, he will make his 250th career Truck Series start.

Hornaday’s Truck Series career began during the series inaugural year in 1995 and his historic journey has led to 45 career wins, 23 career poles, and over 8,500 laps led.

MAGIC NUMBER: DeLana Harvick left Phoenix 60 points ahead of Billy Ballew and the No. 51 truck for the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Owner’s championship. Hornaday’s magic number this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway is ninth. No matter what Kyle Busch does if the No. 33 team can finish in the ninth position they will win the Owner’s championship for Kevin and DeLana Harvick.

RECORD SEASON: KHI has had a monumental season. Year-to-date in 2009 the Truck Series program has recorded eight wins, five poles, 22 top-five and 28 top-10 finishes.

Ron Hornaday

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY CONSISTENT TRACK FOR YOU, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO CLOSE OUT THE YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE?

“Every time I go to the race track, I go with the frame of mind to win the race. It is very important to finish well during the last race of the year. It helps carry momentum throughout the entire off season and helps with the confidence and team morale as you prepare for a new year.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A FOUR-TIME TRUCK SERIES CHAMPION?

“It’s really amazing. I can’t believe all that we have accomplished this year, but we aren’t done yet, we still have to go out this weekend and run well so we can bring home the Owner’s championship for Kevin and DeLana (Harvick). I’m very proud of this team and the entire KHI organization for standing behind me and giving me such awesome equipment to drive.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will take chassis No.029 to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the 2009 season finale. Chassis No. 029 was last on track for the inaugural event at Iowa Speedway where Hornaday drove from the 15th starting position to record a fourth-place finish. Chassis No. 029 is the same truck that Hornaday drove to victory lane earlier in 2009 at Kentucky Speedway and Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last week at Phoenix International Raceway, Hornaday and the No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) team drove to a fourth-place finish. With the finish, Hornaday was crowned the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. His KHI teammate and boss Kevin Harvick drove the No. 4 Longhorn Chevrolet to his second Truck Series victory of 2009.

No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 18 of 25 — Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway

BACK-TO-BACK: Ron Hornaday looks to become the first back-to-back Truck Series winner at Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway if he should win the Copart 200. Ted Musgrave became the first repeat winner at the track going to victory lane in 2001 and 2005.

SMALL WORLD: How times have changed. Eleven years ago at Gateway International Raceway Hornaday was battling rival Rick Carelli for the inaugural win. Hornaday fell 0.351 seconds short as Carelli cruised to his second career Truck Series victory. These days Hornaday hears Carelli’s calming voice over the radio each and every race weekend, as Carelli now serves as spotter for the No. 33 Longhorn team as well as General Manager for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI).

“Gateway is a tough little place,” Carelli said. “You really gain your speed in turns three and four. I remember the race in ’98 well; I moved (Greg) Biffle out of the way and had a great race with Hornaday. It was cool to go back there last year and finally see Hornaday get a win.”

IN THE LOOP: Hornaday leads several of NASCAR’s Loop Data statistical categories at Gateway International Raceway. Over the last four races at Gateway Hornaday leads the driver rating category which takes into account wins, finishes,top-15 finishes, average running position while on lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. For any given race the maximum points that can be earned is 150. Hornaday has a driver rating of 116.1 at Gateway, despite having an average finish of 12th and has finishes of 30th, 15th, second and first respectively. Hornaday has also led the most laps (207) at Gateway over the last four races.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT RACING AT GATEWAY?

“Gateway is very different from other tracks we race on because of the corners. Turns one and two are tight and banked and three and four are wide and flat. We had a good day at Gateway last year; we started second and led the most laps in route to my first win at the track. We need to do the same thing this year. I am really looking forward to heading back there to defend the title.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will take chassis No. 027 to Gateway International Raceway. Chassis No. 027 has taken to the track three times thus far in 2009. Hornaday raced this truck at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway where he finished second to KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick. The No. 33 team also went to victory lane with this truck at The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile and Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park this year.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Hornaday and the No. 33 team finished fourth in the inaugural race at Iowa Speedway. The team struggled all weekend with an ill-handling truck. Starting from the 15th position, Hornaday was able to utilize restarts and work his way up through the field to battle the leaders and score his 11th top-five finish of 2009. With only eight races remaining Hornaday holds a 225 point lead over Matt Crafton.

With NASCAR’s no-testing policy, teams were given five opportunities to practice on the 0.875-mile speedway before the 200-lap event Saturday night. After two long days of struggling with the set up of the truck, the 2007 Truck Series championship team proved once again that they are on a mission for the 2009 Truck Series title.

“The guys on this Longhorn Silverado did a great job,” Hornaday said. “We didn’t have the truck to beat, (Mike) Skinner did. We just fought loose-in, tight-off all night. Actually, we really struggled the last two days, but this is why this KHI team is championship caliber. It was a lot of fun here, we didn’t give up and with eight races to go, we still have our lead. (Matt) Crafton was good and I am not sure how we gained five points on him, but we’ll take it. I just want to thank Longhorn, Copart, VFW, Rheem and everybody who helps us on this program.”

Hornaday began the inaugural Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway from the 15th starting position. The team had the truck too loose during qualifying and made changes to tighten the truck up for the race. At the start of the race, Hornaday quickly began to move up through the field. Two quick cautions at laps one and five bunched the field up on the Iowa short track. Hornaday was able to take advantage of the close racing conditions, and by lap 15 had moved into the 10th position. While Hornaday continued to gain spots, pole sitter Mike Skinner dominated, pulling out to a two-second lead over second place Matt Crafton. By lap 45, Hornaday managed to move into the top five.

The third caution of the race waved at lap 57. Hornaday radioed crew chief Rick Ren that the truck had gone to the tight side as he tried to roll through the center of the corner. At lap 59, Ren brought the No. 33 truck to pit road for four tires and an air-pressure adjustment. The following lap Hornaday came back to pit road for fuel and a wedge adjustment. Hornaday restarted from the fourth position. Trying to gain track position, Hornaday began to beat and bang with the No. 13 of Johnny Sauter and the No. 88 of Matt Crafton. After a few laps, Hornaday was able to persevere and pull away. He then began to work on the No. 6 of Colin Braun for third.

Ron Hornaday

At lap 104, Hornaday moved into the second position. He radioed spotter Rick Carelli to ask what line Skinner was running to try and discern a plan to catch the dominate No. 5 truck for the lead. A caution at lap 109 put the No. 33 team in a tough position. Ren debated for several laps whether or not to put tires on the Longhorn truck. However, he finally made the decision to bring the No. 33 down pit road at lap 112 for four tires and another air-pressure adjustment to help Hornaday with a tight-handling truck. The following lap, Hornaday came back down pit road for fuel. The team was forced to spend a few extra seconds on pit road to pack the fuel cell in order to make it to the end of the race. Hornaday restarted from the fifth position.

As the laps wore down, Hornaday battled back to try and catch Skinner for the lead. However, over the course of three laps the No. 33 truck made a 180-degree swing going from tight to loose then back to tight. Hornaday did the best he could with an ill-handling truck and was able to take the checkers in the fourth position. Skinner was the class of the field all evening leading 180 of the 200 laps on his way to victory lane. Aric Almirola, Braun, Hornaday, and Sauter rounded out the top five. Hornaday was able to gain five points on Crafton, increasing his point lead to 225 markers.

Newton, Iowa - Ron Hornaday continued his march toward a record fourth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship with his 11th top-five finish of the season behind the wheel of the No. 33 Kevin Harvick, Inc. (KHI) Longhorn Silverado in the Lucas Oil 200.

Hornaday started 15th in the inaugural NCWTS race at Iowa Speedway but battled through handling issues to finish fourth and extended his lead in the standings to 225 points over fellow Chevrolet driver Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards/Ideal Door Silverado.

Johnny Sauter piloting the No. 13 Fun Sand/Rodney Atkins/Curb/Karl Chevrolet Silverado finished fifth in the 200-lap race with Crafton taking the checkered flag in sixth.

With eight races remaining in the 2009 season, the NCWTS travels to Gateway International Raceway, Madison, IL for the September 12 running of the Copart 200.

“The truck was really, really good. It started off really free, then we tightened it up a little bit and on that last run the track got a little more rubber and we just got too tight. And then, you know, we just couldn’t pass. It was plain and simple it was just a bottom feeder and if you just stayed on the bottom, it was the only way around. Then if you would catch a lapped guy, you had to catch him at the right spot. That’s how Johnny got by me, he had a really fast truck but he caught me at the right place for him and wrong place for me. All in all, not a bad night but we lost some more points.”

Johnny Sauter

JOHNNY SAUTER, NO. 13 FUN SAND/RODNEY ATKINS/CURB RECORDS/ KARL CHEVROLET SILVERADO, FINISHED 5TH: YOU DIDN’T WIN TONIGHT BUT FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW A TOP FIVE FINISH. FIRST AT CHICAGO AND NOW HERE:

“Yeah, you know I mean it is good obviously and I am super-proud of all my guys on the Thorsport Fun Sand Curb Records Chevrolet. I really thought we had the truck to beat tonight but you know, I just got so tight in traffic but none-the-less it was a good race and this track is awesome. Its so funny though because this track races so different at night than it did yesterday during practice. I ran a completely different line and now I get the Richmond comparison so I drove it a lot like Richmond here tonight. It was a good night for us, not what we want but I suspect we will be getting a lot better here over the next couple of weeks.”

“Tonight’s race was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the entire weekend in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and hope to be back soon. It was cool to bring back the black No. 3 Chevrolet Silverado at Iowa. The number carries so much history with it and to roll it out in my debut on the truck side was special. We had a truck capable of finishing in the top 10, but that spin cost us track position. I’m proud of how we bounced back and picked off those spots at the end. A special thanks to Bad Boy Mowers for tonight and a big thanks to everyone back at RCR and ECR for preparing a great Chevy Silverado this weekend.”
