Colin Braun, driver of the No. 16 Con-Way Freight Ford Fusion, has had a rough start to his rookie season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. This weekend, Braun heads to Nashville Superspeedway hoping to turn his season around at a track he’s performed well at in the past.

COLIN BRAUN – No. 16 Con-Way Freight Ford Fusion – IT SEEMS LIKE ROUSH-FENWAY DRIVERS PERFER CONCRETE TRACKS. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON RACING ON A CONCRETE TRACK?

“I enjoy racing on a concrete race track. I don’t know if I prefer them, but I really enjoy racing on the concrete race tracks. I feel like the Roush-Fenway cars and the trucks, we’ve always run really well on the concrete tracks. I think that just goes to show the amount of work these guys put in at the shop.”

CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHY THAT IS? “A lot of it has to do with the way we have our cars set up. I think the concrete race tracks are more consistent throughout the time we’re there; from the time we start practice until we qualify and then when we race. They always seem to stay fairly consistent how they change during the time we’re there. It kind of allows you to work on your cars a lot, get them really dialed in specifically instead of having to guess what the race track is going to do, how it’s going to change, you can just kind of work on it from the very start and know that’s how it’s going to be during the race. I think that lets all of the engineers really focus in and get these cars set up and driving well.”

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ASPHALT AND CONCRETE? CAN YOU TELL IT AS A DRIVER?

“You get those little tiny vibrations more on the concrete race tracks. I think it’s the expansion joints and the way that they have the surface prepared is a little bit different. As far as when you’re actually out there during practice and racing on it, to me it seems like the concrete tracks particularly Nashville, don’t seem to open up as much when you get into the race because you get those fine little bits of rubber that wear off the tires and it pretty soon turns into a one groove race track. It’s a little bit different feel than when you’re on asphalt.”

Colin Braun - Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood/Getty Images for NASCAR

USUALLY THIS TRACK IS A SINGLE EVENT AND NOW IT’S A DOUBLE WITH THE TRUCK RACE. WILL THAT CHANGE THE TRACK CONDITIONS?

“It will change a little bit. I think it’s going to rubber up a bit quicker having trucks practice and obviously before our race they’ll have done their race. I don’t think it will be a huge difference.”

YOU HAVE BEEN TO NASHVILLE A COUPLE OF TIMES. ARE YOU MORE FAMILIAR WITH THIS TRACK COMPARED TO A FEW OTHER PLACES?

“I think so. I think we’ve really run well there in the past in the No.6 Con-Way Freight Ford F-150 Truck. We’ve been fast, qualified up in the front, finished up in the top-five every time we’ve been there. It’s just been a good race track for me and it’s just a place I enjoy racing at. It gives you a little bit of confidence especially coming off the rough start to the season that we’ve had in the No. 16 Con-Way Freight Ford Fusion.”

YOU’VE QUALIFIED REALLY WELL THIS YEAR BUT YOU’VE RUN INTO SOME BAD LUCK DURING THE RACE. IS THIS A TRACK WHERE YOU COULD TURN YOUR SEASON AROUND?

“I think we can. We’ve shown really good progress over the first four races and I feel like we’ve really learned a lot, certainly I have learned a lot, and I feel like my crew chief and I, Eddie Pardue, we’ve been working together a lot better here the last couple of races. Every time we hit the race track we’re learning more and getting better and learning more about each other and figuring this out. Nashville is going to be a great place to kind of put all of the pieces together and really start getting down to business.”

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THIS SEASON?

“My goals for this season are to win the Raybestos Rookie-of-the-Year campaign. That’s been the goal back in 2008 in the Truck Series, and we accomplished that, and certainly that’s the goal for us in the Nationwide Series as well.”

(November 20, 2009) – Colin Braun and the Con-way Freight team had one major goal heading into the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway Friday night. After falling to seventh in the points at Phoenix, they were determined to regain those two spots to finish fifth in the points. It came down to the last lap, but in the end Braun’s third-place finish and five bonus points for leading a lap helped the team attain their goal.

Heading into the last race of the season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Braun and the Con-way Freight team were 25 points out of fifth place. They cleared their first hurdle toward fifth-place on Friday afternoon when Braun won his fifth pole of the season. The pole broke the tie between him and Ron Hornaday for most poles of the year. Braun led the first five laps of the race which gave him five bonus points that would come into play by the end of the night.

His truck got loose the longer he ran and he fell back to ninth place before he was able to pit for tires and adjustments during the first caution on lap 33. Quick work in the pits helped him gain three positions and restart the race in sixth place on lap 37.

The truck was still quite loose and he fell back to eighth before the next round of adjustments in the pits on laps 59 and 60. He was 11th for the restart on lap 63 and moved up to eighth within 20 laps. The truck was better, but still too free getting into the corners.

With 20 laps to go Braun was in sixth place and outside the top five in points. The crew was planning a green-flag pit stop for fuel and held off as long as they could, hoping to do it under caution. Crew chief Mike Beam finally called Braun to pit road for fuel and a track bar adjustment on lap 119 and within a few laps Braun was back in sixth place.

With 10 laps to go he was still sixth and tied for fifth in points. He moved into fifth place with seven laps to go, but that was still not enough to move him up in the point standings. A little luck came Braun’s way when the caution came on lap 131. Beam made the call to pit for right-side tires while many of the trucks ahead of Braun took four tires. The call put Braun in third place for the green-white-checker restart.

In the final two laps Kevin Harvick took the lead from Timothy Peters, who did not take any tires under caution. Matt Crafton made a run and got by Braun at the same time as Peters fell back behind Braun. As the checkered flag flew Harvick won the race, followed by Crafton and Braun.

Colin Braun

“Getting in the top five in points was definitely the goal for us tonight and qualifying on the pole helped a lot,” Braun said. “Leading the lap came into big play there. I don’t think if we would have led a lap we probably would have finished fifth in points. So, certainly that was important for us. We just struggled in the race. I thought we had a really good truck. The way we ran in practice last night I was surprised it wasn’t a little better in the race. But my guys did a really good job trying to get it fixed up during the race. My crew chief Mike Beam made a great pit call there at the end to get us back some track position and we were able to hold on at the end.”

The No. 6 Con-way Freight True LTL team gained two positions to finish the 2009 season fifth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings by only seven points. Braun will accept his fifth-place award Monday night at the year-end banquet in Miami Beach.

– PIT ROAD COMMENTS

“I’m disappointed because I thought we had a little better truck than that. These guys did a really good job on pit road. My crew chief Mike Beam made a great call taking two tires there at the end. The big thing for us was to get back up in the top five in points and I’m pretty sure we did that tonight. It was a good night.”

Colin Braun

COLIN BRAUN – PRESS CONFERENCE

– YOU CERTAINLY HAVE TO BE PROUD OF THE SEASON THAT YOU GUYS TURNED IN. GETTING IN THAT TOP FIVE WAS VERY SPECIAL TO YOU.

“Yeah, that was definitely the goal for us tonight, qualify on the pole. Leading the lap came into a big play there. I don’t think if we would have led a lap we probably would have finished fifth in points. So, certainly that was important for us. We just struggled in the race. I thought we had a really good truck. Ran in practice last night and was surprised it wasn’t a little better in the race. But my guys did a really good job trying to get it fixed up during the race. My crew chief Mike Beam made a great pit call there at the race to get us back up some track position and we were able to hold on at the end.”

HOW LONG WOULD THIS OFF-SEASON HAVE SEEMED TO YOU IF YOU HADN’T GOTTEN THAT JUMP LATE AND GOTTEN UP TO FIFTH? HOW LONG WOULD IT HAVE TAKEN TO GET OVER SOMETHING LIKE THAT?

“I think with how good of a truck we had last night, it would have been pretty disappointing. I think on one side of me I’m really happy to have gotten in the top five in points and the other side is frustrated we didn’t run better than we did. I feel like since we did get in the top five in points we can kind of put this race behind us, and work on building the Nationwide car and get ready to go Nationwide racing next year. I’m sure it will be pretty different.”

No. 14 International Truck and Engines Ford F-150

RICK CRAWFORD – No. 14 Circle Bar / International Truck Engine Ford F-150 – (finished 17th, qualified 12th) –

“I’m proud of my Circle Bar Ford F-150 race team with International Truck and Engine on board for the past three years. It’s been quite a ride. We haven’t had the stellar year that we wanted this year, but we were top 10 in the points for the sixth consecutive year in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. That means a lot of consistency and we’re there each and every race. I wish all of the fans out there would drive one of the best Ford pick-ups of any car company out there. I’ll keep turning to the left and Ford F-150 keeps taking me to the finish line. We’re top-10 in points, I’m very proud of my team. Hopefully we’re back next year.”

Rick Crawford

IT WAS AN UP AND DOWN NIGHT FOR YOU ON THE SCORING SHEET.

“I was struggling all day, I really did. I don’t understand. Our truck wasn’t what we brought here yesterday and even in qualifying, we were 12th fastest and really optimistic about how the race was going. The green flag dropped and she acted like she had four flat tires. We even pitted there at the end and put four sticker tires on it thinking it would be different to make up some positions there at the end and it just wouldn’t do it. The truck got contrary on me. The truck just wants to go back to Texas and work out on the farm, so that’s what we might do with it. It’s a great truck; it was the 2009 MotorTrend Truck of the Year and the number one selling pick-up in the state of Texas.”

“Phoenix was a tough race for us, so we have put that behind us and we are focused on the last race of the season at Homestead. We are taking one of our favorite trucks which has been good at the intermediate tracks all year. We won Michigan with it so it would be awesome to win Homestead with it too. We really need a strong finish to have a shot at ending the season in the top five in points. That is our goal and we’re not giving up on it just because we lost some points in Phoenix.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Homestead:

“It was pretty disappointing to fall out of the top five in points in Phoenix last weekend so we’ve got our work cut out for us in Homestead to regain those points. We are only 25 points out so it’s definitely possible to get back up there. We’re taking chassis 43 to Homestead which is a strong truck for us and finished top five at Texas two weeks ago. I know Colin and the whole Con-way Freight team are determined to do everything we can to finish the season in the top five in points.”

FAST FACTS:

-Braun will be racing chassis RK-43 at Homestead. This is the same truck that he got a top-five finish with at Texas two weeks ago.

-Braun is currently seventh in the points with one win, eight top fives and 13 top 10-finishes, but only trails fifth place by 25 points. He also has four poles which ties Ron Hornaday for the most this season.

-Although seventh in points, Braun ranks in the top four in almost every key statistical category. He has a driver rating of 96.0 (fourth-best), an average running position of 9.12 (fourth-best) and fourth of drivers in laps in the top 15 with a percentage of 86.7 (3359 laps).

“Phoenix has a pretty unique shape, and being such a flat track that always poses more of a challenge to get the set-up just right than on a more banked track. Mike Beam and the guys have great notes to go off from the past years so that is always a big help. We were up in the top 10 early in the race last year, but wrecked about halfway through the race. I got pinched down on the apron and just chased the truck up the race track and eventually lost it coming off the corner and that was that. Hopefully this will be a better weekend for the Con-way Freight team to keep us in the top five in points.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Phoenix International Raceway:

“Phoenix was a challenging track for Colin last year, but he has improved everywhere we have gone this season so I expect him to run better at Phoenix. We’re taking the same truck we raced at Memphis this summer which was a top-10 truck. We’ve made some gains on our flat-track program this year so hopefully that will pay off at Phoenix this weekend. We are still fighting to stay in the top 10 in points so we need to run every lap and get a solid finish.”

“I love racing at Texas. It’s such a fun track and we’ve had some pretty good results there. We got a third-place finish in our first trip there this year, so this time I really want to get the win. I consider this my home track since I’m from near Abilene, Texas. Our truck this weekend has been strong for us all year and won at Michigan in June. With only three races left this season I really want to get another win and Texas would be the best place I can think of to do it.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Texas Motor Speedway:

“We didn’t get the finish we wanted at Talladega, but we did what we needed to do in the points. Colin led the most laps and made it out in one piece which moved us up to fifth. We had a strong run in Texas in June and we’re taking our favorite intermediate truck this weekend. I know it would mean a lot to Colin to win in his home state, and this team would certainly like to get another win before the season is over.”

FAST FACTS:

- Braun will be racing chassis RK-43 at Texas. This is the same truck that won at Michigan in June and most recently raced at Las Vegas in September.

- Braun is currently fifth in the points with one win, seven top fives and 12 top 10-finishes. He also has four poles which ties Ron Hornaday for the most this season.

- Although fifth in points, Braun ranks in the top four in almost every key statistical category. He has a driver rating of 96.6 (fourth-best), an average running position of 8.9 (fourth-best) and third of drivers in laps in the top 15 with a percentage of 87.2 (3117 laps).

- Braun has two top-five finishes at Texas in only three starts there. Braun considers Texas his home track since he grew up in Ovalo (located near Abilene).

“I’ve been looking forward to going back to Bristol, not only
because it is a fun track, but also to redeem myself from last year. We
had a really rough night last year and I feel more confident going back
this time. I’ve learned a lot about the balance between patience and
aggressiveness in the last year which will really help at Bristol.

It is
such a demanding track and there isn’t much room for error. You really
have to be on your toes and looking ahead of you all the time to see
what you may be about to hit, or who might hit you. Qualifying is so
important there. It’s a lot easier to start up front than to try to
work your way up there. Pit strategy plays a big role at Bristol too to
keep, or gain track position.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Bristol:

“We are taking chassis 39 to Bristol which is the same truck that ran
well for us at ORP last month. Hopefully it will come out of Bristol in
better shape than it did last year. Colin has really matured a lot as a
driver since his first trip there in 2008. I expect him to have a much
better run this time around. We’ve climbed up to ninth in the points
so our goal at Bristol is to maintain that and get out with our truck in
one piece, for the most part.”

FAST FACTS:

- Braun will be racing chassis RK-39 at Bristol. This is the same truck
that Braun finished fifth with at ORP in July.

- Although ninth in points, Braun ranks in the top five in almost every
key statistical category. He has a driver rating of 95.6 (fifth-best),
an average running position of 9.49 (fifth-best), fourth of drivers in
laps in the top 15 with a percentage of 83 (1843 laps) and sixth in laps
led with 93 laps.

- The Con-way Freight True LTL Ford F-150 will carry a special decal on
the bed cover at Bristol. It lists all the names of the 88 Con-way
employees participating in the National Truck Driving Championship in
Pittsburg this weekend.

(June 27, 2009) – The only thing hotter than the racing in Memphis Saturday was the temperature. A heat index of 110 degrees at race time proved to be tough on the drivers, crew members and fans. Colin Braun was ready for the challenge with plenty of fluid and a truck that brought him another top-10 finish.

Braun qualified fifth but fell back to 13th early in the race as he told the team his Con-way Freight True LTL Ford F-150 was very tight through the center of the turns. He was not able to pit for adjustments until a quarter of the way through the race on lap 53. He took four tires, fuel, track bar and wedge adjustments during his two stops, but lost three positions in the pits when he pitted short during the tire stop.

After the adjustments the truck was better but still tight in the center. By the halfway point at lap 100, Braun was up to 11th and holding his own. A caution on lap 111 brought him to the pits for the final time of the race for four tires and more adjustments. This team the Con-way Freight team gained one position in the pits.

The green flag flew on lap 117 with Braun in 11th place but he moved up to ninth on the restart. The leaders stayed single file for much of the rest of the race until Dennis Setzer brought out the caution with three laps to go. All the leaders elected to stay on track and not pit, including Braun. He was still in ninth place for the two-lap shootout with Johnny Sauter in front of him and Todd Bodine behind him. Braun held his own to finish the race in ninth place, his fourth consecutive top-10 finish and sixth of the season. Ron Hornaday won the race after leading 175 of 201 laps.

Colin Braun

“I’ve really struggled at Memphis in the past so I’m pretty happy to leave here with a top-10 finish,” Braun said. “Our truck was really tight in the center early in the run, but the guys kept working on it to make it better on both stops. It was incredibly hot in the truck, especially during that last caution. I really didn’t want to see that caution, but everybody raced clean in those last couple of laps and we were able to maintain ninth. I’m happy to have this one over with and move on to our next race at Kentucky in a few weeks. That is more our kind of track where I think we can contend for another win.”

The No. 6 Con-way Freight team gained one position and is now 10th in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings. The next race will be on Saturday, July 18 at Kentucky Speedway. It will be live on SPEED at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

(June 20, 2009) – After losing the race against Mother Nature Friday night the Copart 200 rolled off Saturday afternoon under warm, sunny skies. Coming off a big win at Michigan last weekend, Colin Braun and the No. 6 Con-way Freight True LTL team were hoping to keep the momentum going. Although they were not able to capture another win, Braun did get his fifth top-10 finish of the season.

Braun started 13th based on owners’ points since qualifying was cancelled due to the rain on Friday. The truck was tight early in the race and he fell back to 17th, but then worked his way up to 10th place by lap 30. When the first caution of the race flew on lap 39 crew chief Mike Beam brought Braun down pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. The team had two fast stops, but a traffic jam leaving pit road only allowed Braun to gain one position in the pits.

He was ninth when the race resumed on lap 44. The truck was better with the adjustment and he was up to fifth by the halfway point at lap 100. Without a caution, many of the teams began to cycle through the pits for green-flag fuel stops around lap 120. Braun pitted for fuel on lap 122, but a caution six laps later put him a lap down. Once everyone pitted under caution, Braun restarted the race 10th, but at the tail end of the lead lap in front of the leaders. He was able to stay in front of the leaders until the next caution came on lap 144 which put him behind the leaders on the lead lap.

Colin Braun

Braun lined up eighth when the race resumed on lap 146. With 25 laps to go he was up to fifth place and closing in on fourth. A final caution on lap 189 bunched up the field and Braun made his charge on the restart with eight laps to go. In the final laps Braun was battling Todd Bodine for fourth place. With two to go, Braun got loose inside of Bodine which forced him to fall back to 10th place. Never one to give up, Braun fought for as much track position as he could in the last two laps and finished the race in eighth place. Ron Hornaday took the win and the point lead.

“We had a pretty fast truck there at the end,” Braun said. “I just got loose under Bodine and lost some spots trying to save it. We didn’t have enough at the end of the race to challenge for the win since I think I used up a lot of our tires trying to stay ahead of the leaders when we got a lap down after the green-flag pit stop. All in all it was a good day since we came out of here with a top-10 finish. We gained a few more points and are getting closer to cracking the top 10 really soon.”

The No. 6 Con-way Freight team gained one position and is now 11th in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series point standings, only 18 points out of 10th place. The next race will be on Saturday, June 27 at Memphis Motorsports Park. It will be live on SPEED at 6:00 p.m. (ET).

“I am still pinching myself a bit that we finally broke through and
won last weekend. Everyone says the first win is the toughest to get so
I hope they are right. We had a lot of ups and downs before it, so now
I’d just like to keep the momentum going and keep gaining points.

“Milwaukee is a fun track, but it’s also challenging. I ran the
truck and Nationwide races there last year. We had a great run going in
the truck race but got caught up in someone else’s accident which tore
up our truck pretty badly. We ran in the top three for the first half of
the race, so hopefully this time we can do it again, but avoid the bad
luck.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at The Milwaukee Mile:

“Now that Colin has his first win I’m hoping they come a lot more
easily. After a top five in Texas and a win at Michigan I feel really
good about the direction this team is heading. We gained a bunch of
points this week which was exactly what we needed.

There is a lot of
racing left to do this season and I know we are capable of more wins.
We’re taking the same truck we raced in Milwaukee last year, but
hopefully with a better outcome this time.”

FAST FACTS:

- Braun will be racing chassis RK-55 at Milwaukee. This truck has not
been raced since last year at Phoenix, but the team tested it earlier
this spring.

- With the win at MIS, Braun moved up six positions to 12th in the
points and is only 30 points out of 10th. He gained 72 points on 10th
place at Michigan.

- Although 12th in points, Braun ranks in the top six in almost every
key statistical category. He has a driver rating of 95.5 (sixth-best),
an average running position of 10.23 (fifth-best), fifth of drivers in
laps in the top 15 with a percentage of 74.4 (978 laps) and sixth in
laps led with 93 laps.

“I was hoping to get my first win in my home state of Texas last
weekend, but the next best thing would be to win at Michigan. That is
home for Jack Roush, Con-way Freight and Ford Motor Company so it would
mean a lot to win there. Roush trucks have won this race the last two
years in a row so it’s up to me to continue the streak.

This team has
been running really well since Kansas in April, but we had a string of
terrible luck in May at Lowe’s and Dover. With a top-five finish in
Texas I’m hoping we got the monkey off our back and can continue to
get solid finishes and gain back a lot of points. We gained 39 points on
10th place at Texas so we just need to keep the momentum going.”

Crew chief Mike Beam on racing at Michigan International Speedway:

“I know Colin will have a good truck at Michigan this weekend. This
is the same truck Travis Kvapil won with at MIS in 2007, and Mark Martin
finished second in it in 2006. We had to put a new front & rear clip on
it, and we replaced the entire body except the roof after Lowe’s, but
it’s been in the wind tunnel and on the k-rig this week. Colin got a
top 10 at MIS last year, so after a top five in Texas last week we are
expecting a good outcome.”

FAST FACTS:

- Braun will be racing chassis RK-43 at Michigan. This truck last raced
at Lowe’s in May but was rebuilt after an accident that occurred while
Braun was leading the race.

- Although 18th in points, Braun ranks in the top 10 in almost every key
statistical category. He has a driver rating of 90.1 (sixth-best), an
average running position of 11.1 (seventh-best), sixth of drivers in
laps in the top 15 with a percentage of 72.3 (878 laps) and seventh in
laps led with 67 laps.

- MIS is a big race for the Roush Fenway team with Con-way Freight (Ann
Arbor), Ford (Dearborn) and Roush Industries (Livonia) all headquartered
in Michigan.

- Roush Fenway trucks have won at MIS the past two years with Erik
Darnell (’08) and Travis Kvapil (’07).
