Flat Tire Can’t Flatten Confidence For Steve Wallace In St. Louis

“Kenny Wallace Barely Misses Top-Ten; Brendan Gaughan Competitive Until Accident”

MADISON, IL (October 23, 2010)— Although a flat tire with just a handful of laps remaining in Saturday’s 5-Hour Energy 250 at Gateway International Raceway deprived Steve Wallace (No. 66 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry) of what looked to be a sure top-five finish, the young driver isn’t going to let the day’s events get him down.

“It’s easy to focus on the fact that we finished 12th, after running in the top-five all day long, but what we choose to focus on is the fact that we did run in the top-five all day long. That’s where we want to run on a weekly basis. If we can do that, we’ll be putting ourselves in positions to win races and that’s why we’re here,” said Wallace, “This weekend was definitely a good confidence builder for our team as we head into the last three races.”

Despite his setback, Wallace set 15 of the race’s fastest laps en route to salvaging a 12th-place finish at Gateway. That finish enabled Wallace to capitalize on the misfortunes of his teammate, Brendan Gaughan (No. 62 South Point Hotel and Casino Toyota Camry). Gaughan ran among the top-ten for part of the day in Gateway, until being involved in two separate incidents and finishing 26th. Wallace now leads Gaughan by 123 points in the race for the all-important top-ten in the final driver standings.

RWR’s third car on the day was Kenny Wallace (No. 28 Illinois Corn Growers Toyota Camry), an entry which ran in association with Wallace’s usual No. 28 team. Wallace surprised many, charging from a 19th-place start into the top-ten by the race’s halfway point. Only a slow green-flag pit stop around the race’s three-quarters mark prevented him from scoring his first top-ten of 2010.

Despite the poor stop, Wallace was still able to guide his Camry to a 13th-place effort, only the third top-15 finish of 2010 for the underfunded No. 28 car. Noted Wallace, “I just want to thank everyone at the Illinois Corn Farmers for all of their support. We had an eighth to tenth-place car and just had a bad pit stop under green. We came into the pits 12th and went out 16th; that really hurt us. It was fun for me to be able to race for a top-10 cold turkey. It was fun to pass people and race. Obviously, I’m a competitor and I don’t feel like I’ve lost anything as a driver.”
