(November 8, 2010) – If there is one racetrack on the schedule that Matt Crafton looks forward to going to a little more than the others, it’s Phoenix International Raceway. Crafton would tag along with his father, Danny, to watch him race in the biggest Southwest Tour events of the season, the Copper World Classic in early February and, in later years, the season finale in conjunction with the Sprint Cup Series in November. It’s a racetrack that holds a lot of sentimental value to the Tulare, Calif. native and a victory there in this weekend’s Lucas Oil 150 would almost be like a win at Daytona.

What do you remember about your first race at Phoenix?

“It was in 1997. I don’t remember how we finished so it must not have been that good, but I do remember how anxious I was getting to go there. That whole week leading up to that race I could feel the butterflies. At that point the biggest track I’d ever raced a stock car on was a quarter mile. We took the car to Bakersfield to get some test laps in before we went to Phoenix just so I would have a little better feel for the speed involved. This was before they had a committee to review your resume, so really all you had to do was file an entry and go. I remember getting there and I couldn’t believe how big the place was compared to everywhere else we’d raced. It really was like racing at Daytona to me then.”

Why is Phoenix such a big deal to you?

“Well it all goes back to when I was a kid, watching my dad race there. And once I started having the chance to run there, we were always so fast but we just had the worst luck. We started on the pole there a few times and had the fastest car out there. One race we were leading by half a lap and the rear gear went out, and the next race we were there leading by a straightaway and we lost another rear gear. It’s always a place I’ve wanted to win at, so I built my own car to run the last Copper World there. I had three guys in a 15 passenger van and a little box trailer and we went out and won the race. It was great to finally get that win but I really want to get a Truck win there.”

Matt Crafton – Photo Credit: Sam Greenwood / Getty Images for NASCAR

What do you and your team have to do to get into Victory Lane this weekend?

“We just need to have everything go right. I know we had the truck to win last weekend but something outside of our control took away our chance to win. We qualified on the pole but had to start from the back. We could run with Kyle (Busch) and Johnny (Sauter) but it was like a brick wall of air whenever we got within a couple of lengths of them. I know we’ll have a truck just as capable of running up front this weekend, we just need to get track position. That’s what cost us last weekend.”

Matt at Phoenix: Matt has nine career NCWTS starts at PIR; he has two top-five finishes (third, 2004; fifth, 2006) and six top-ten finishes. His best start was second in 2007. His average start is 10.4 and his average finish is 9.3. He has completed all 1,362 possible competition laps at PIR.

Matt’s Phoenix Truck: Matt will be driving ThorSport Racing Chassis No. 43 this weekend at PIR. This chassis was brand new for the Iowa race in July and has also been used at Gateway, ORP, and New Hampshire. It has four top-five finishes in the four races in which it has been used.

“We just came up short tonight,” Crafton said. “I pumped those tires up on that last run. The run before that one, we got behind, caught some lapped traffic, and the No. 4 and No. 17 got too far away from us. We could slowly run them down, but they just had too much distance on us. The crew chief made a great call to take four tires right there at the end, and we were able to make it back to second-place. I said I wanted to go down swinging, and we did. But overall, our No. 88 Australian Gold Chevy was really strong. The guys worked on it a bunch from the time we rolled it off the trailer. We qualified seventh for the race, and we knew we’d have a great shot to win. We wanted to win so badly, but it wasn’t to be for us. Our guys did a heck of a job, like they have all season, and I really appreciate everything they’ve done for me.”

It was Crafton’s fifth second-place finish this season, and his second in the last three races. He finished in second-place in the NCWTS standings. For the season, Crafton racked-up a career-high eleven top-five and twenty-one top-ten finishes. He won Pole Awards at Chicagoland and Texas.

“We did some good things this season, and there’s no doubt we expect to be right there battling for the championship again next season,” he said. “There’s no reason we shouldn’t be better next season. We’ve sold a few trucks already here at the end of the season, and we’re building new trucks for next season. We know what we need to do to make our trucks just that much better, and our sights are set on a championship run. This team has come a long way in a few years, and we just keep getting better. I’m thankful to (owners) Duke and Rhonda Thorson for providing us all of the resources we need to try to win races and a championship, thankful to Menards and Chevy for all of the great help they continue to provide to us. Hopefully, we can bring a championship home next season.”

Kevin Harvick Caps off Season with Victory at Homestead; Ron Hornaday, Jr. is 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion and Delivers Kevin and DeLana Harvick, Co-owners of Kevin Harvick, Inc Second Truck Series Owners Title; Silverado Increases Driver’s Championships to 10 in NCWTS Competition; Johnny Sauter Claims 2009 Raybestos Rookie of the Year Award

Miami – (November 20, 2009) – It is official, Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 Longhorn Silverado, has won the 2009 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCWTS) driver championship to become the first four-time Series champion.

With his eighth (8th) place finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Hornaday and the No. 33 Silverado team led by Rick Ren delivered the 2009 NCWTS owners championship for the second time to Kevin and DeLana Harvick, co-owners of Kevin Harvick, Inc.(KHI).

To cap off the season, Harvick claimed his third NCWTS win of the season taking his No. 4 Georgia Boots Silverado to victory lane. He led four times for 108 of 136 laps.

Hornaday’s first title came in 1996. He claimed his second in 1998 and third, also behind the wheel of a KHI Silverado, in 2007. He holds the top spot in number of race wins in the Series with 45 to date. Rick Ren is also the winningest NCWTS crew chief with a total of 27 trips to victory lane.

In claiming both the 2009 NCWTS driver and owner crowns, KHI claimed nine (9) victories this season. Hornaday captured his title with six (6) wins this season. Harvick contributed to KHI’s owners title with three trips to victory lane.

Hornaday’s championship is the 10th time a Silverado driver has won the NCWTS top-prize in the 15-year history of the Series, more than any other manufacturer.

“On behalf of everyone at Chevrolet, congratulations to Ron, Kevin and DeLana on their outstanding season that netted them both the driver and owner championships in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series,” said Brent Dewar, Vice President, Chevrolet Global. “For Ron to become the only four-time NCWTS champion with his Rick Ren-led team is a remarkable achievement. There is a great sense of pride at Chevrolet that all of his 45 wins have come behind the wheel of a Chevy Silverado.”

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards Silverado, finished second in tonight’s race and in the standings after a season-long battle with Hornaday. It is the best final point standings finish for Crafton in his 10-year NCWTS career.

Johnny Sauter, No. 13 Fun Sand/Rodney Atkins/Curb Records Silverado, captured the Raybestos Rookie of the Year award as well as finishing sixth in the overall standings.

“It is a proud moment for us to congratulate Ron Hornaday on his fourth NCWTS championship and Kevin and DeLana Harvick on their second owners crown,” said Mark Kent, GM Racing Manager. “With the outstanding performances of the ThorSport drivers Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter, Team Chevy captured three of the top-six positions in the final standings.

“As a result of the 10 victories captured by Ron, Kevin and Johnny, Chevy Silverado continues to be the winningest truck in the Series.”

Ron, Rick, Kevin and DeLana and the entire No. 33 KHI Chevy Silverado team will be honored at the championship celebration on Monday, November 23 at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.

November 20, 2009

An interview with:

KEVIN HARVICK

ERNIE COPE

RON HORNADAY JR.

RICK REN

THE MODERATOR: We’ve got quite a group up here in front of us. We’re going to roll into the race winner for the Ford 200. That is Kevin Harvick, he drives the No. 4, Georgia Boot Chevrolet with crew chief Ernie Cope, and also joining him up on the podium is our 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion for the fourth time. He sets an unprecedented record in that series. No one has ever won four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championships, and he’s the first driver to do that. And that’s Ron Hornaday Jr., driver of the No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet, with crew chief, Rick Ren. Certainly owners Kevin Harvick and DeLana Harvick are here with them to celebrate in that.

First off, the race winner, let’s hear from Kevin Harvick. Great victory for you tonight. The third win in your sixth top 10 in 2009. Back to back victories, congratulations, Kevin.

KEVIN HARVICK: Thank you. Just you know it was a great weekend for us. The truck was flawless. Really two weeks in a row it’s been flawless now. We built two new trucks to try to get a head start on next year.

Our main goal was to go out and after Ron had clinched the driver’s championship the last two weeks to lead the most laps and win the race, and it’s not very often you can go out and accomplish that. So we had a good weekend and the guys have worked hard.
And Georgia Boot came on at the last minute to sponsor the truck, so it’s been a great weekend. Lock up the championship last week, and lock up the owner’s championship this week makes it a lot of fun.

THE MODERATOR: Congratulations. You have your crew chief over there, Ernie Cope. Your thoughts about tonight’s victory?

ERNIE COPE: It was pretty dominating. Only thing I was worried about was a caution at the end, and it did happen, but the truck was fast enough it didn’t matter.

THE MODERATOR: Speaking of domination tonight, Kevin Harvick certainly defined that. He had a perfect driver rating of 150 tonight in the race. That’s the first time, I think, in your career in the Truck Series, Kevin, that you’ve accomplished that. It doesn’t get any better than that. So congratulations on a perfect driver rating of 150.

KEVIN HARVICK: Yeah, I don’t really know how that works. But it sounds good.

THE MODERATOR: Various components go into it. But it’s certainly a measure of just how dominant you were tonight. Congratulations.

KEVIN HARVICK: Thank you.

THE MODERATOR: Let’s hear from our 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. He may have wrapped it up this week, but he was hard charging out there tonight. But, Ron, how does it feel to win four championships in this series as competitive as it is, and here you are with your fourth championship? Talk about that?

RON HORNADAY JR.: It would have been really bad if we did not win that owner’s championship. This team really deserves it. Kevin and DeLana have given us the equipment to do the stuff that we do. Five wins in a row is remarkable, and that’s because of Rick Ren and all the guys and Kevin and DeLana letting us build new trucks week in and week out.

I went up there probably two months ago and I had like 11 trucks done. I went back up there two weeks ago and only had four trucks. So Kevin keeps selling my trucks and building new ones. I’m not going to complain because they’re faster than anything you drive.

At my age you get too get in these rocket ships. I’m still having fun. Other than this weekend and last weekend, I’ve been sicker than a dog. But to come down here and win four. It will hit me as soon as we get a cold beverage over there at the motorhome. Gatorade.

THE MODERATOR: Rick Ren, certainly not your first time around the block with Mr. Hornaday. You guys won the championship in 2007. And here again in 2009. I think this is a great statistic here. You’re the all time series leader in crew chief wins with 27. That’s terrific. Had five different drivers in nine seasons that have won those races for you, but congratulations, Rick, and how does it feel to be a champion again in 2009?

RICK REN: It’s kind of undescribable. It’s a valiant effort of all the members of our race team. The guys, Ron and myself, we worked really hard this year to not have any shortcomings, because we came up just a little bit short last year, so we worked really hard other all areas that we could control.

I’ve just got to thank the whole thing. Kevin and DeLana with the opportunity, Ron with his drivability, and my guys with their work ethic. And that’s what it takes to build a championship team.

Q. Ron, would you detail what kind of ailments you’ve been through this week and just how difficult it’s been for you tonight particularly?

RON HORNADAY JR.: It’s just been flu symptoms. Just it all started when I got off the airplane. You know, my mother in law’s been sick, and we went to the hospital and seen her. Then we jumped on an airplane. Must have gotten the flu or something. The tickle in the throat, the head ready to blow off. You want the whole deal? The drippy nose, the runny (laughing).

The only good thing about it I didn’t get the fever or anything. They say if you get the fever, you have the swine flu. So I didn’t get that. Sit down here in good old Miami for three days, sitting in the motorhome sweating to death.

Q. You talked a little bit out on pit road about the final restart. What was the decision like there at the end? Was there any talk about whether or not you were going to come in or was it just a no brainer?

KEVIN HARVICK: I thought it was a no brainer. I thought that the tires, you know, were probably to the end of their life. And with the track position that we had, I felt like there was enough lap cars in between us that were going to pit, you know, to make sure that we could put four tires on it.

And I saw the 17 stay out, but everybody behind me came. So it really worked out good. We had four tires, they had no tires, and we were able to get a good restart. He had old tires and just spun the tires there at the end and moved down the block. As soon as he moved back up, I just drove by him.

So it was a good night on pit road. We didn’t have any mistakes on pit road, and, you know, it all worked out in the end.

Q. You were emotional a couple of years ago with winning your first title. How can you put this one in perspective? How much better is it maybe because you won the race, Ron won the title last week and then clinched the owner’s title for you. I don’t want to say does it make it sweeter, but can you compare the two?

KEVIN HARVICK: I think we look at them as equal from a team standpoint, you don’t want to lose anything from an owner’s championship to a driver’s championship. And I think everybody knew how important it was to go out and win that.
I’ve been a part of the celebrations where you have to share the stage with somebody from the owner’s championship side of it, and it’s not you don’t feel fulfilled. And I think with the year that they’ve had, you know, it feels like it’s a fulfilled year.

I mean, you know, we knew that I knew that my job was to go out and try to lead the most laps and beat kyle. I thought that barring some crazy circumstances, that they knew what they needed to do and could make that happen and it all worked out.
We’ve seen it all night workout. We’ve been on the other side of the fence last year. You just never know. That’s what makes the series so exciting.

I don’t need to tell you guys, and you all know, but it’s more of a there’s a lot of personal relationship between Ron and myself and, you know, it it’s very gratifying to see him be able to win. That means as much to me as winning the races or winning the championships is to see Ron happy and winning races and winning the championship. You know, the personal relationship is more important than, you know, anything else.

Q. People have talked about this often throughout your stint in the Truck Series. But what is it when you run well in a truck race, why does it always seem like the momentum tends to carry over throughout the weekend?

KEVIN HARVICK: Yeah, I don’t know. I race at all the racetracks that I like. You know, I think every time we show up we have good trucks. That makes it a lot of fun. You kind of cherry pick the places that you like to go.

So nine times out of ten, the Cup car’s going to go well. The momentum definitely didn’t carry over last week, and we had two good days to lead up to the Sunday race. But it definitely doesn’t hurt. It makes you feel good from a confidence side that you can go out and win races. You know, it makes it a lot of fun, so it makes you pretty relaxed for the rest of the weekend.

Q. How do you have so much success when you’ve got a grizzled old grandfather for a driver?

RON HORNADAY JR.: He’s as old as I am.

RICK REN: Yeah, I’m actually a little bit older.

KEVIN HARVICK: Between the two of them they’re over 100.

RICK REN: Yeah (laughing). You know, it’s just we’re both first of all, we respect each other. And respect is a big word in this business. Second of all, you know, him and I just have an agreement. He tells me what it’s doing and he wants me to fix it, and we work it out.

We don’t argue with each other or fight with each other. We just go out and do our thing, you know. Everybody growls at each other once in a while, but that’s part of this business. I don’t know. It’s just fun. I think we get along great.

RON HORNADAY JR.: Now. Ten years ago we wouldn’t have.

RICK REN: Yeah, ten years ago we probably wouldn’t have.

Q. Did you know that Kyle had blown the tire and was a couple of laps down or did they not tell you?

RON HORNADAY JR.: Yeah, I seen Kyle. Trust me I had been watching him all night. Yeah, it still didn’t change my strategy. Rick and I, I told him what the truck was doing, and he fixed exactly what I told him. We went a little too far.

We were on the same deal, and we know the tires were, you know, Kyle made the right choice of staying out and just putting fuel only because he’s won the race three or four times having tires in the pits when the other guys didn’t.

So strategy didn’t work this time. We blew the right front. That’s what with Rick and I did last year, we got tires and made up for it, and we lost. So, yeah. They kept me informed. I kept yelling at how many laps to go because I wanted to get out pretty quick.

Q. I know the past two weeks you’ve been thinking big picture, but how does it feel to get beat two weeks in a row by your car owner? Is?

RON HORNADAY JR.: Yeah, it’s my truck. Yeah. It’s I’ll finish second every week. I’ll keep getting championships. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to win.

Kyle, when he shows up here, he brings the bar up that much higher, makes us work that much harder. Same deal with Kevin when he shows up. That’s what makes this series so great.

Anybody can win any given day, and NASCAR with the venue tracks we’re going to, different drivers, young and old did I say that again? It just makes it so much fun.

So Kevin beat me. I’ve got to go do my homework. I’ll give him the truck this week. He had a better truck than I did. You own them both, does it matter (laughing)? I got to slow down once in a while, don’t I?

THE MODERATOR: Okay. Congratulations on tonight’s race win. Or this season’s championship as both a driver and owner. Congratulations.

An interview with:

MATT CRAFTON

THE MODERATOR: We have our second place finisher in tonight’s race. He also finished second in this year’s Championship points race. That’s Matt Crafton. He drives the No. 88 Australian Gold Chevrolet. Matt, you had a good season, had a good race tonight. Your thoughts about how things unfolded?

MATT CRAFTON: They unfolded all right. That 4 truck, he’s been tough here the last few races. They brought two really good trucks the last two races and we’ve came up short tonight.

But we had a really, really good truck. I knew at the end last night we had a really good truck. The balance on the truck and the race trim was really good.

And I honestly didn’t know how it was going to qualify, because we tried to do a qualifying run last night and we were horrible loose. So after we qualified where we did, I knew we had a shot to be able to have track position.

Q. The grand picture with KHI, with Ron, and now with Kevin winning back to back races, what was that like in terms of trying to just keep up with them? Is there any kind of consolation in being as close to them tonight and finishing second?

MATT CRAFTON: It’s really good. But there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to beat them. We outran them 33. It just shows. KHI they built two brand new trucks, a brand new truck for Phoenix, and a brand new truck for here. It just shows how good their stuff was these last two races with Kevin, that’s exactly what we’ve planned on doing.

We’ve sold a few trucks here already at the end of the year, and we’re building new stuff for next year. We’ve kind of got some ideas, and here are some of the ideas of what they’re doing.

We’ve got a direction we need to go to make our stuff better, and that’s what we plan on doing in making a really good run for the championship next year. I mean, this team I can’t thank Duke and Rhonda, Thorson and Menards and Australian Gold.

Each and every year if you look at our points since ’05, every year we’ve gotten better and better. I mean, Top 5s, it’s been really good to see the team come from as far as they’ve come.

NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES
FORD 200
HOMESTEAD-MIAMI POST RACE NOTES AND QUOTES
NOVEMBER 20, 2009

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 GEORGIA BOOT SILVERADO, RACE WINNER: LAST WEEKEND A DOUBLE CELEBRATION, DRIVER CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE WIN, THIS WEEKEND THE OWNER CHAMPIONSHIP AND A WIN: </strong

>“I just have to thank everybody at KHI. We knew we needed to go out and beat Kyle (Busch). We knew (Ron) Hornaday needed to race safe and do what he needed to do to win the owners championship. Obviously, he won the drivers championship last week. Our goal was to go out and lead the most laps and win the races. They built me trucks and everything I needed to do what I needed to do on the race track. They were flawless in the pits. Just a lot of hard work from all the guys at the shop. Like I said, everybody in this program from Georgia Boot, to Chevrolet, to Rheem, Copart, VFW, Longhorn, all the people who make this program go around.”

WHEN THAT LAST CAUTION CAME WERE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE CALL TO COME DOWN PIT ROAD FOR FOUR TIRES?

“Well, I think you know, when we had to pit under green there and nobody put tires on, everybody was a little concerned about their tires. There was only, not very many trucks left on the lead lap so they came down and put four tires on. We knew we would have a cushion with all the lapped trucks in between. I knew the No. 17 (Timothy Peters) was going to be a sitting duck. It all worked out.”

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GET THAT CHAMPIONSHIP AT A TRUCK OWNER?

“First thing I want to say is congratulations to Billy Ballew and Kyle (Busch) and all the guys that have driven the No. 51 truck. That is a lot of fun to race with those guys. Ron means a lot to me as a person. To see him in that truck and winning races and winning championships is something special personally. As a company, it is something that is a lot of fun to have raced for the last three championships. But to see what they have done is something that I am really proud of.”

YOU COULDN’T HAVE WRITTEN A BETTER SCRIPT TO END THIS SEASON.

“Yeah, I’ve just got to thank everybody at KHI. They built me two brand new trucks. A lot of different things that we wanted to do. Ernie Cope and all these guys for putting a lot of extra effort into this Georgia Boot Chevrolet. Gotta thank Rheem, Copart, Longhorn, VFW, all the people who have helped us with this program and year Hornaday has had. To close out the season like this is really what we wanted to do. We had to guard against Kyle (Busch) leading the most laps and winning the race. We accomplished that with these two trucks. Going to be a lot changed on these two teams over the next month. Danny Stockman is moving on to be Austin Dillon’s crew chief on the No. 3 truck so that makes me proud that a lot of these guys are able to move up in their careers. Really looking forward to making these things better than they were this year and I promise you we will.”

YOU WERE DRIVING AWAY TONIGHT AND THEN A LATE CAUTION MADE THINGS REALLY CONFUSING, TALK ABOUT THE CALL TO COME TO PIT ROAD.

“I just wanted to know how many guys were on the lead lap. I knew we had a big cushion with all the lap trucks in between us so we just put four tires on. I knew the No. 17 was a sitting duck there with four tires on our truck. It was a lot of fun. Just gotta thank everybody from Georgia Boot again, Chevrolet and everybody at KHI for all their hard work. There’s not a whole lot you can say about Hornaday. He’s a lot of fun to be around. He’s meant a lot to me and to race for championships three years in a row says a lot about the team. We’re going to work hard over the off season to make it better. Thank the fans for everything you guys do for us and we’ll keep racing hard.”

YOU GUYS WERE EXPECTED TO WIN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, TALK ABOUT HOW YOU WERE ABLE TO TAKE THE BULL BY THE HORNS AND WIN IT SO CONVINCINGLY.

“I think obviously the middle of the year was really good. I didn’t think we started that good. I think that the end of the year we didn’t run as good as we did in the middle of the year with the No. 33. I think there was a little bit of lost focus on that particular team with some of the things going on. The guy behind the wheel makes up for a lot of it. These guys do a great job in the shop but without Ron Hornaday none of us are racing for three championships and he’ll race for another one next year.”

YOU BUILT SOMETHING SPECIAL, CONGRATULATIONS ON ANOTHER ONE.

“Thank you guys. Thanks everybody from SPEED too and all you do for our sport.”

MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 AUSTRALIAN GOLD SILVERADO, FINISHED 2ND: KNOW YOU WANTED THE CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT YOU HAD A GREAT SEASON:

“I wanted that championship bad, but gosh darnit, I wanted to win. I can’t thank these guys enough. This truck was good all night and we worked on this thing so much from when it rolled off the trailer. We knew we had a really good race truck going in to tonight. It qualified seventh, I was pretty happy with that, but I knew I had a pretty good race truck. I just wish we would have been able to run four or five laps there at the end instead of just one.”

A GREAT YEAR FOR THORSPORT RACING ALL AROUND:

“Yes, definitely. That says a lot for ThorSport and what they have done. We just keep making stuff better and better. Duke and Rhonda Thorson, they just keep giving us what we need to win races and win a championship. We are proving to them we can.”

TALK ABOUT THAT MOVE YOU MADE ON THE LAST RESTART FOR THE GREEN-WHITE-CHECKERED:

“This thing was really good. I pumped those tires up on that last run. The run before that we got behind, just caught some lapped traffic, just wrong position and the No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) and the No. 17 (Timothy Peters) got out on us so far. We could slowly run them down but they had so much distance on us. Right there, the crew chief made a great call to take four tires right there at the end. I said I would rather go down swinging and we did. I hate it what happened when the No. 5 ran in to me and killed my left front fender on that last deal too. But we got to second. I don’t know how many second places that is this year, but we have had a lot of them. I have got to thank these guys. We had an awesome race truck right here.”

SECOND TONIGHT AND SECOND IN THE STANDINGS, THAT REALLY EXPLAINS THE KIND OF YEAR YOU GUYS HAVE HAD GOOD BUT NEVER QUITE GREAT ENOUGH.

“I would say we were the bridesmaids a lot this year. There’s been plenty of times when we had the best truck and didn’t win races. We got beat on fuel mileage. All I can say is I can’t wait until we have normal pit stops again where we take four tires and fuel at the same time because I know we’ve lost two races because of that pit strategy. All in all a pretty good year. Not ecstatic about it but definitely happy about it because we keep making progress. Duke and Ronda Thorson, Menards, Australian Gold and Chevy and we keep getting better and better and that’s what we’re out here to do. Building new trucks this winter and we’re going to be tough for next year.”

YOU’VE GOT TO CRAWL BEFORE YOU CAN WALK, DID THIS YEAR LAY THE FOUNDATION SO YOU CAN GO OUT AND WIN THAT CHAMPIONSHIP NEXT YEAR?

“Yeah. I mean we know we can. We’ve got a great group of guys. I know I can do it and they know they can do it now. Like you said crawl before you can walk and run, really. We’ve proved that we can do that. We’ve got the consistency and like I said its so tough to win these races these days. We had two taken away from us and could have been a lot different if those weren’t taken away from us but all in all a pretty good year.”

CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON.

“Thank you. Thank all the fans for coming out and supporting us and everything you guys do for us.”

AS FAR AS TONIGHT’S RACE, WAS IT AS MUCH FUN AS IT WAS TO WATCH?

“I love this race track. The last two or three years, it hasn’t been the best to me. But, we brought this truck that has been real good to us all year. They keep working on it and making it better and better. We are building some new stuff for next year and I can promise you we are going to make one heck of a run for that championship.”

RON HORNADAY, NO. 33 LONGHORN SILVERADO, FINISHED 8TH AND CLAIMED FOURTH NCWTS CHAMPIONSHIP: “IT WAS OFFICIAL A WEEK AGO BUT TONIGHT YOU GUYS CAN REALLY START THE CELEBRATION.

“No its not. Kevin and DeLana have been giving us truck all year. To win the owner’s you’ve got to do that. It’s everything. You can’t just win the driver’s it takes a whole team. These guys do it all and like I said when Kyle (Busch) comes over here and runs he just steps up the program and makes us run that much harder. A lot of sponsors to thank. Definitely have to thank Longhorn tonight and Chevrolet. All the fans who stick it out with these guys. We’ve got Georgia Boots, VFW, I’m so sick I’m out of breath. I didn’t even want to run the last 10 laps. Turtle Wax, Wylie-X and just a lot of people have been helping me out especially Indian Motorcycles.”

HAVE YOU GOTTEN THE GRAVITY OF WHAT IT MEANS TO HAVE A FOURTH CHAMPIONSHIP IN NASCAR, IT’S QUITE A FEAT?

“Well I appreciate that. If it wasn’t for getting this owners too it wouldn’t have been that good but to come here and win them both. You don’t think about that, to come down here and win four championships you don’t think about the owners. Busch ran us hard and we had to go out there and try to beat him. Good night for KHI all the way around.”

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 4TH NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP:

“Thank you. Well first of all I have to thank Camping World for sponsoring this great series that NASCAR’s got. But Kevin and Delana have just given me a chance to drive their rocketships. Got to thank Longhorn, VFW, Georgia Boots, Turtle Wax……everybody. It just takes everybody including Rheem and it just takes everybody. Its just so fun to come out here and do this.
“Being as sick as I was I didn’t even want to drive the truck and was hoping Kevin would switch the numbers but it worked out for the best and we are going to take this one and go on.”

15 – 20 YEARS AGO YOU WERE SLUGGING IT OUT BUILDING RACE CARS FOR A LIVING, UNTIL A CALL FROM DALE EARNHARDT. DID YOU EVER THINK YOU WOULD BE HERE MULTIPLE TIMES AS YOU HAVE?

“Its your dream. And I lost my father a year ago and he gave me a token deal before he passed away he said he has left a lot of room for three or four more championships. And he said don’t quit until you fill that up and as long as Kevin and Delana will have me I will keep putting engravements on that and grandma I hope you are doing better we will see you here in a couple of days. Bill and all the family and grandkids back at home we will be home soon.”

TALK ABOUT THE RACE TRUCKS YOU HAVE HAD, AND RICK REN AS THE CREW CHIEF, AND THE JOB THAT HE AND EVERYONE HAS DONE. “It just shows you what Kevin and Delana have done, letting these guys build new trucks and its not because of……………….Kevin just keeps selling them and they just keep building new trucks week in and week out. Kevin drove a brand new truck tonight and one last week and those are my trucks for next year so that is pretty cool.

“It was so fun and I don’t even know how to explain it. Mark Smith thank you for your motors and what you do for us. Congratulations on that championship for him to. PME motors – they have been with us all year and I really got to thank them because they go through thick and thin and give us some great horsepower. So Mark’s happy and thank you very much.”

At the same time, he celebrated with dual burnouts down the front straightaway alongside his Kevin Harvick, Inc. driver Ron Hornaday, Jr. who made history by becoming the first four-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) champion.

Hornaday secured the unprecedented feat with a fourth place finish in tonight’s race. Heading in to the season’s final race next week at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the battle for the 2009 NCWTS owners’ title is still undecided. DeLana Harvick holds a 60-point lead over second place.

“ I couldn’t think of a better track and I love Phoenix,” said the newly-crowned champion. “This is a compliment to the team. It takes a lot of people to do this, all the guys back at the shop. Just had another great truck Mark Smith with the motor program and what he has done and with Chevrolet and everything they do including the wind tunnel and all their support and Pratt and Miller. It just takes a bunch of people and I am just fortunate enough that my wife and I are old enough that we are just at the race track and having fun.”

Johnny Sauter, No. 13 Fun Sand/Rodney Atkins/Curb Records Silverado finished fifth in the race scheduled for 150-laps but a caution on lap 149 forced the race in to overtime for a green-white-checkered finish.

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Australian Gold/Menards Silverado, finished eighth to give Team Chevy four of the top-10 finishers in tonight’s race. Crafton is second in the standings, 150 points ahead of third place as the season winds down to one race to go.

Kyle Busch (Toyota) and Aric Almirola (Toyota) finished second and third respectively.

The final event of the 2009 season will November 20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

I don’t know what happened there but the end result was I spun. I just want to thank everybody from Longhorn and KHI (Kevin Harvick, Inc.), Chevrolet, VFW, Rheem and all of these fans for coming out and supporting everything that we do. This Truck Series is a lot of fun to race in. Got to have a little bit of fun with Kyle (Busch) there at the end head to head. That is always fun so. So, great truck. Hopefully we can do the same thing next week.”

HOW MUCH FUN IS IT TO HAVE A GREAT TRUCK?

“It is pretty awesome to have a vehicle like this. I mean, from the time we unloaded it, it was just flat awesome.

“To have (Ron) Hornaday clinch the drivers’ championship and me win the race is pretty cool. I mean we got to do twin burnouts out there. I couldn’t hardly do a burnout; he definitely had me topped on that one. I couldn’t get my tires spinning. That was not good. But it was pretty cool anyway.”

Kevin Harvick wins the Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway Photo Credit: Todd Warshaw, Getty Images

TALK ABOUT RON’S FOURTH CHAMPIONSHIP:

“Well Ron has been the catalyst of everything that has turned this team in to championship caliber. You know you don’t have worry about what is happening from the driver’s seat, you know that everything is coming out of the driver’s seat that is absolutely possible. From there, we have built a team around him that was capable of giving him the trucks that he needed. Like I said, he gets everything out of them that he can. It is fun to watch and Ron is a great friend of mine. Meant a lot to me coming up through my career. To win a second championship with him is pretty cool.”

<img src="http://www.catchfence.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/RH09NCWTSCP.jpg" alt="Ron Hornaday Jr., driver of the No. 33 VFW.org Chevrolet Silverado, celebrates with the series championship trophy after clinching the title with a fourth place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway on November 13, 2009 in Avondale, Arizona.
“We aren’t done yet. We have to get the owner’s title too. Kyle (Busch) is pretty close to us. KHI, I can’t say enough for them. These trucks are awesome. I don’t know what happened during the pit stop, but for them to rally back…and Rick Ren (crew chief) with that short gas just to keep us out in front of that No. 88. It is so much fun to drive for Kevin and DeLana (Harvick), I can’t believe. VFW, Copart, Longhorn, I can just sit here and name everybody, it has been great. Turtle Wax, Georgia Boots, Miller Welders, thank you for all the help. Wiley X, Indian Motorcycles. It is unbelievable. This is a lot of fun.

“I am glad Kevin won this race, that is cool. This is a compliment to the team. It takes a lot of people to do this, all the guys back at the shop. Just had another great truck.

“Our favorite truck got wrecked, it really ran good here. These guys brought this truck back, I knew I didn’t have a winning truck, but I had to play it smart in points.”

A GREAT START TO THE SEASON, CONSISTENT, FIVE WINS IN A ROW MID-SEASON, HOW DID YOU STAY FOCUSED DURING THE LAST HALF OF THE SEASON?

“We had the post lead and then we ended up wrecking at Dover. These guys never say quit. Kevin kept building me new truck each week. Kevin had a brand new truck here which will be for 2010. He is going to run one next week. I can’t say enough for everyone.

“Jack Sprague, buddy, I wish you were out here racing me. I got four so now you have to come back and get another one.

“This is unbelievable. Four. We still have hard work to do. Kyle is pretty tough. We have to stick with him at Homestead to get that owner’s”

Matt Crafton

MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 AUSTRALIAN GOLD/MENARDS SILVERADO, FINISHED 8TH: NOT EXACTLY WHAT YOU GUYS WERE LOOKING FOR BUT HOW WAS THE RACE TRUCK?

“No I felt like we had a top-five truck. We didn’t have a winning truck tonight for sure, but I felt we had a top five truck. We just lost a lot of spots there on that last deal. The crew guys said they dropped a lug nut and we got behind on that and some of the guys beat us out on the fuel stop and I don’t think they took but a splash and there were some of the Toyotas saving fuel there in the end. They must have put just enough in it to make it.

“For some reason we were really good at the beginning……..I shouldn’t say really good but pretty good. And then on the last two runs we got really off for some reason. I don’t know if it was air pressure or what we did but it was definitely off at the end. I don’t know. Not a horrible day but not a good day.”

HOW ABOUT THE CHAMPIONSHIP? YOU LOST TO ONE OF THE BEST.

“I’m over it. I want to win races. I mean congratulations to Ron and the whole deal. They were good the whole year and they were winning races and we got out fuel-mileaged and beat on that. I look forward to the new……I should say the old pit rules the way it should be done and I definitely think we are going to be a lot better next year.”

<img src="http://www.catchfence.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/KHITeam.jpg" alt="(L-R) DeLana Harvick, team owner Kevin Harvick, Ron Hornaday Jr. (C), driver of the No. 33 VFW.org Chevrolet, Linda Hornaday, and crew chief Rick Ren, celebrate after Hornaday clinched the series title with a fourth place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway on November 13, 2009 in Avondale, Arizona Photo Credit: Getty Images" title="(L-R) DeLana Harvick, team owner Kevin Harvick, Ron Hornaday Jr. (C), driver of the No. 33 VFW.org Chevrolet, Linda Hornaday, and crew chief Rick Ren, celebrate after Hornaday clinched the series title with a fourth place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway on November 13, 2009 in Avondale, Arizona Photo width="200" height="133" class="alignright size-full wp-image-29865" />

(L-R) DeLana Harvick, team owner Kevin Harvick, Ron Hornaday Jr. (C), driver of the No. 33 VFW.org Chevrolet, Linda Hornaday, and crew chief Rick Ren, celebrate after Hornaday clinched the series title with a fourth place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix International Raceway on November 13, 2009 in Avondale, Arizona Photo Credit: Getty Images

RON HORNADAY AND KEVIN HARVICK POST RACE AND POST CHAMPIONSHIP PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT – MORE TO FOLLOW:

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP

“Thank you. I couldn’t think of a better track and I love Phoenix. It looked pretty grim for a while. But its not over by far because we are racing Kyle Busch for the owner points and that is the true goal. That shows how good our team is and Kyle has been really racing strong and has six or seven wins this year. So we are going to do what we can to hold them off down there but we are going to go down there and have a little fun and race a little different.”

WAS YOUR GOAL TONIGHT TO RACE SMART AND TO NOT MAKE ANY MISTAKES?

“You didn’t watch the race because we tried to race smart but we left the gas can out the back and that put us in the back and I was sweating it out because we got behind the 11 and I started pushing real bad and I thought my right front tire started going. I put about five turns of brake in and I started sliding and I learned something.

“On the third to the last restart it wouldn’t turn and started shoving the tires and I had to put more rear brake in it just then. Luckily that kind of happened in that run because it kept us in the top-five and Johnny Sauter was really coming strong so…….we came home in the top-five and that’s what we needed to do to keep Matt behind us. He’s a heck of a racer and I am glad they turned the program around and gave us a run for our money all year long and there are just so many people to think and you guys have been following it all year and see what it takes to go racing with Copart, Longhorn, VFW, Georgia Boots, and Turtle Wax. It really takes a lot and having all those sponsors to work together and do what they have done is just great.

“Mark Smith with the motor program and what he has done and with Chevrolet and everything they do including the wind tunnel and all their support and Pratt and Miller. It just takes a bunch of people and I am just fortunate enough that my wife and I are old enough that we are just at the race track and having fun.”

HOW SIGNIFICANT AND HOW BIG OF A DEAL IS THIS CHAMPIONSHIP TO YOU TO SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM SPRAGUE AND BE THE FIRST 4 TIME CHAMPION?

“You said it right there. I got one up on Sprague and that’s all that counts. I said it out there, that Sprague needs to come back and try and get a fourth one and just keep me racing. Jack and I have been fighting for wins and championships back and forth and Jack had to quit and give me a little head start so we went back and forth and he had 23 then I had 24 then he had 25 so its just been a fun battle with Jack and I wish he was still out there because he is a heck of a little racer. I don’t know. Maybe I will have to build another trophy case. I only have five so maybe I will have to move one over and put two together so.

“Its been a long week because Lindy’s mom went through surgery and she came out of that real well and they had given her a thirty five percent chance of surviving it and she is doing real well and at home today. So it will be good to get home and see her tomorrow.”

YOU HAVE TALKED BEFORE ABOUT GUYS COMING AND SLEEPING ON YOUR COUCH. BUT HOW COOL IS IT TO THINK THAT YOU HAD JIMMIE JOHNSON, WHO MIGHT BE A FOUR TIME CHAMPION, YOU ARE NOW A FOUR TIME CHAMPION AND YOU GOT HARVICK IN THE MIX. YOU LOOK BACK ON THAT AND COULD YOU IMAGINE THAT GUYS WHO WERE SLEEPING ON YOUR COUCH WOULD HAVE AS MANY CHAMPIONSHIPS AND YOU WOULD HAVE AS MANY CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ALL THAT STUFF BACK THEN?

“My wife made me sleep on the couch just last week. (laughs). Its kind of cool and I think this is kind of the payback with what Kevin and Delana have done for me and like I said its not over. We have to win that owners point championship. They definitely deserve it because they have given me great trucks all year. And the truck that Kevin built tonight was a 2010 that we are going to run next year and we have had a lot of help from Chevrolet and because Kevin never quits. I went into the shop a couple of weeks ago and there were like fourteen trucks and then I came back and there were like five trucks. I said, ‘where did all the trucks go?’. He said, ‘Kevin sold them all and you are getting all brand new trucks again next year. And when we won five races in a row they were all brand new trucks and so my hats off to the boss man right there. He has what it takes to win them and oh, here is the boss lady…..I forgot. But its been fun and we are not done. As long as Kevin and Delana has me, we are going to win some more of them.”

RON – IT IS UNUSUAL TO WRAP UP A TITLE WITH ONE RACE TO GO, THAT HAS TO BE A NEW EXPERIENCE FOR YOU:

“It took me 30 years to do it. If you look at the year, we had a pretty good points lead and then we ended up blowing a tire at Dover and Matt caught us. Then we had another bad race and ran out of fuel. Like I said, we’re not done racing. We have to go down and race Kyle Busch. Those owner’s points mean more to me than a trophy because it says the whole team worked hard and we beat everybody. So we are going to go out and do what we have got to do. Kyle is on a roll. He almost won three of them last weekend. We are going to go out there and get the owner’s championship…so we are going to keep racing.”

RON – TALK ABOUT HOW SPECIAL THIS TRACK IS TO YOU FROM YOUR SOUTHWEST TOUR AND WINSTON WEST DAYS:

“Kevin was telling Carmichael (Ricky) that I was racing here when it was dirt, before they even started it. Oh, fresh asphalt. It is cool. I am not totally talking about the championship. It is cool for me to win it, but it isn’t over yet, it is not even close. Kevin and DeLana deserve a lot more because of the equipment, the people they put in places. It takes a lot. Without our sponsors that work together and the program they put together to make it happen, this is what it is all about.”

RON – IS THERE AN ADDED SENSE OF BEING SPECIAL IN THE VFW TRUCK WITH BEING SO CLOSE TO VETERAN’S DAY AND COMING ON THE HEELS OF THE TRAGEDY AT FT. HOOD? “

I appreciate that. The last few have been VFW races it is hard to go out there and see all those soldiers and see the tragedy at Ft. Hood. A lot of support from VFW. I can’t say enough about them. I had the opportunity to go to Iraq and see what the men and women do first hand. TV, newspaper, they really don’t do it justice. I brought pictures home and tried to explain it to my wife. About the smells and everything else. My hat is off to all the men and women. It is pretty cool and it is special and thanks for bringing it up.”

RON – TALK ABOUT HOW UNIQUE IS THE RELATIONSHIP IS BETWEEN YOU AND KEVIN:

“I’m mad that I didn’t get to go up there and race him for the win. We had to play it smart and do what we had to do to overcome a pit stop failure. Rick Ren made a great call to only put one can of fuel in to beat the No. 88 out of the pits. It worked out great. It is always fun to race Kevin because you know he is going to run 120 mile an hour faster than you. I remember the first time I ran his Nationwide car, he was in the second car and he turned me sideways to pass me. I was like “Doesn’t he know he owns this car? I couldn’t go run into the back of him just cause he did that. That was the first experience I had with Kevin, he doesn’t really car whose car it is he is going to move you out of the way to race it.”

KEVIN – SAME QUESTION:

“For me, I came up through my career. I was thinking back to races at Mesa Marin, the nights the he and Rick Carelli and Mike Chase and all the guys that used to race in, it was open comp back then, then Southwest Tour. I was sitting in the grandstands. And now I have Ron and Rick and Ernie Cope and a couple of kids from the West Coast, and Andy Houston that came up through the Truck Series, so it is just a lot of us that raced together. It is about the race vehicle. These guys go out and race it and enjoy it”
