Event: Ford 200 (Race 25 of 25)

Series: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

Location: Homestead-Miami Speedway (1.5-mile oval)

Start / Finish: 27th/26th (Running, completed 118 of 119 laps)

Winner: Johnny Sauter of Thorsport Racing (Chevrolet)

Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM)

Three-time reigning NASCAR Mexico Series champion Germán Quiroga, making his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start, experienced some early misfortunes that lead to a 26th-place finish in the rain-shortened Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Quiroga, who started the race from the 27th position, had advanced to the 20th spot on lap 30 when Max Gresham got loose off of Turn 4 and slid up the track into the No. 51 Telcel Tundra. The contact sent Quiroga sliding sideways towards the inside wall along the frontstretch. The veteran driver held the brakes as the truck harpooned along the slippery apron until the front end responded. Once the front end responded, he was able to right the path of the truck and pulled away having avoided contact with the wall.

With two flat tires on the No. 51 Telcel Tundra, the 31-year-old driver proceeded slowly around the track to avoid further damage before bringing the truck down pit road. The over-the-wall crew put four fresh tires on the truck, examined it for further damage, filled it with fuel and returned their driver to the track still on the lead lap.

Unfortunately, Quiroga’s bad luck continued as the crew had sent their driver back on the track before securing all of the lug nuts and were issued a penalty from the NASCAR officials. Quiroga was forced to return to pit road to serve the penalty and by the time the No. 51 Telcel Tundra returned to the track, it was scored one lap down in the 31st position.

German Quiroga

“It was a very tough race,” said Quiroga of his first start at the 1.5-mile oval. “We had a very nice No. 51 Telcel Toyota at the beginning of the race and I was just trying to come from the back part of the grid — where all of the accidents happen — but they hit us and the problems started. I felt like if we could have avoided the trouble at the beginning, we had a truck that was capable of my first top 10. I am thankful for the effort the team made and hope to be here next year for the full season.”

When the race restarted on lap 35, the Mexico City native was in the “Lucky Dog” position, where he ran for several laps, but as the race proceeded caution free for over 60 laps, the leaders began lapping other drivers. Eventually, the leaders once again worked their way around the No. 51 Tundra, putting Quiroga two laps down.

A single car spin brought out the fourth caution of the race on lap 98. With all of the lead-lap cars in front of Quiroga electing to pit, veteran crew chief Rick Ren kept his driver on the track in order to receive the wave around.

When the race restarted on lap 102, Quiroga was scored one lap down in the 27th position. The No. 51 Telcel Tundra was in the 26th position when the caution came out for precipitation on lap 119. Shortly after the field parked on pit road, the rain strengthened and the race was ruled official with 119 of the scheduled 134 laps complete.

“After seeing the poise German showed tonight, you can tell why he is a three-time champion in the NASCAR Mexico series” said Ren, the all-time winningest crew chief in the history of the Truck Series. “Unfortunately, because it rained late in practice, we weren’t able to complete both laps of our mock-qualifying run and we had to start the race near the back of the field. German ended up getting spun early in the race, but showed impressive truck control in avoiding the wall. Then, our guys made a costly mistake on pit road and we went a lap down. I think if that error didn’t occur, he would’ve had a top-15 finish. Instead of getting frustrated after the mistake, he maintained his composure and just took advantage of gaining valuable seat time. I’ve been very impressed with German during the two races that he drove for us this season. Hopefully, we can get things worked out for him to run full-time next season.”

Johnny Sauter picked up his second win of the season. Quiroga’s teammate, Denny Hamlin, finished second and Kevin Harvick third. Rookies Nelson Piquet Jr. and Joey Coulter finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Ty Dillon, Elliott Sadler, Timothy Peters, Jason White and Austin Dillon, who became the youngest driver to win a Truck Series championship, rounded out the top-10 finishers.

There were five caution periods for 16 laps, with seven drivers failing to finish the race.

Winner: Johnny Sauter of Thorsport Racing (Chevrolet)

No. 18 Dollar General Toyota Tundra

Only two things stood between Denny Hamlin and Victory Lane at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Friday night — Johnny Sauter and rain.

Celebrating his 31st birthday, Hamlin was like a kid patiently waiting until the end of the party to eat his cake and open his presents. His No. 18 Dollar General Tundra was riding in the catbird seat, tucked behind Sauter’s No. 13 truck, as he patiently waited for the right opportunity to make his move in the final stages of the Ford 200.

With 20 laps remaining Hamlin’s spotter, Curtis Markham, made his driver aware that rain was fast approaching the area and if he felt like he could challenge for the win, he needed to get by Sauter in a hurry. One lap later, Hamlin made a strong run on the outside line through the middle of Turn 3 but just as he began to pull around Sauter coming off of Turn 4, Sauter got loose, slid up the track and brushed Hamlin into the wall. To avoid possibly wrecking both trucks, Hamlin checked up, and Sauter maintained the lead. As the field approached the start-finish line, the rain began falling and the caution waved.

Shortly after the field was parked on pit road, the rain strengthened and the race was ruled official with 119 of the scheduled 134 laps complete.

“I knew I had a Dollar General Tundra that could get around Johnny (Sauter), but I just wanted to be patient and wait until later stages of the race, and also to ensure that we kept the third-place guy behind us and tried to use the draft,” said Hamlin who posted a win and a runner-up finish in two starts for KBM this season. “Strategy didn’t work out. It probably cost us a win today, but they told me one lap before the rain came that it looks like rain is coming, so if I got anything, I’d better go. That was my last-ditch effort on the corner to try to get around him. He slid up and got into us and we got in the wall, and it was one of those things. We were not in a position to really race him that hard anyway.”

With Friday afternoon’s qualifying washed out by rain, the field was set by practice speeds from the morning practice session. Hamlin started the race from the 17th position, but began marching towards the front of the field once the green flag dropped. By lap 11 he had cracked the top 10 and had advanced into the seventh position when the competition caution occurred on lap 20.

The 31-year-old driver communicated to crew chief Eric Phillips that the Dollar General Tundra was tight off the exit of the corners in the early stages of the race. When pit road opened, Hamlin brought his truck down pit road where the KBM over-the-wall crew put on right side tires, filled it with fuel and returned their driver back to the track in the runner-up position.

Hamlin made his way to the lead on lap 25, but after one lap on point, relinquished the lead to James Buescher and settled into the runner-up spot. He remained in the second position when the second caution of the race occurred for a spin involving his teammate, Germán Quiroga, on lap 31.

After the race restarted on lap 35, a long green flag run ensued allowing competitors who took four tires during the competition caution to take advantage of having fresher tires. Hamlin had slipped back to the eighth position when he made a green flag stop for four fresh tires and fuel on lap 70.

When pit stops had cycled through on lap 90, the Virginia native had worked his way back up to the third position. He remained third when the third caution of the race occurred on lap 97. He communicated to Phillips that the biggest issue with the Dollar General Tundra was being loose into the corners.

Hamlin brought the Dollar General Tundra down pit road for four fresh tires and full tank of fuel. Phillips used an air pressure adjustment to try and secure Hamlin’s entry for the final stages of the race and communicated to Hamlin that his truck had enough fuel to make it to the end of the race.

The race restarted on lap 102 with the No. 18 Tundra scored in the third position. On lap 105, Hamlin made his way into the runner-up spot and tucked in behind race-leader Sauter. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular, making just his 13th career Truck Series start, kept within two truck lengths of the lead, applying just enough pressure to try and force Sauter into making a mistake or abusing his equipment.

In the end, Sauter finally slipped up, but Hamlin ran out of both space and time and was forced to settle for a runner-up finish in the rain-shortened race.

Sauter’s win was his second of the season. Hamlin was second and Kevin Harvick third, while rookies Nelson Piquet Jr. and Joey Coulter finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Ty Dillon, Elliott Sadler, Timothy Peters, Jason White and Austin Dillon, who became the youngest driver to win a Truck Series championship, rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Quiroga, the three-time reigning NASCAR Mexico Series champion, finished 26th in KBM’s No. 51 Tundra.

There were five caution periods for 16 laps, with seven drivers failing to finish the race.

The No. 18 Tundra led the Truck Series with eight wins in 2011, but the defending Truck Series owners’ champions finished second in the 2011 standings, 104 points behind KHI’s No. 2 team.

(November 15, 2011) – By winning three of the last four NASCAR Mexico Series races, Germán Quiroga has already put the finishing touches on his third consecutive championship with one race remaining on the 14-race schedule. Quiroga will be looking to parlay his recent success south of the border into a strong run in Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The Mexico City native will be making his second career Truck Series start behind the wheel of the No. 51 Telcel Tundra. Quiroga brought home a respectable 16th-place finish in his Truck Series debut at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in September.

In addition to three wins this season in the NASCAR Mexico Series, the 31-year-old driver propelled himself to a championship behind the strength of 10 top-five finishes. Prior to winning three consecutive titles, Quiroga finished second in points in both 2007 and 2008.

Quiroga’s 17 career wins rank second on the all-time NASCAR Mexico Series list behind Rogelio Lopez’s 20. Over 94 career starts, he has captured eight poles, 61 top fives and 74 top 10s.

German Quiroga

Germán Quiroga, Driver of the No. 51 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Telcel Tundra:

How big of an honor is winning three consecutive NASCAR Mexico Series championships?

I think more important, is to show the team work and communication we have created. It’s all about working hard and always having a bigger goal to reach.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in making the transition from the cars that you run in the NASCAR Mexico Series to the trucks?

Getting used to the radial tires, the weight of the truck, and how important the down force is to the truck. It was very difficult to pass trucks during the race, but I think that I will get used to after a couple of races.

Since making your debut in September, have you continued to follow the Truck Series?

Even before I made my debut, I always watch every Truck Series race on television. If I can’t be in the truck, at least I will try to learn from watching the broadcast. I also went to the Truck Series race in Las Vegas and watched and listened to the team communicate on the radio to try and learn even more.

Do you have any experience on any tracks bigger than a one-mile oval?

I raced at Nashville Superspeedway in the East Series in 2007 and practiced at Kentucky Speedway in order to make the Futaba 100 Infiniti Pro Series race at Indianapolis Speedway in 2005.

Have you set any goals for the race at Homestead-Miami?

Knowing that I already have a little more experience in the truck, I will try to qualify in the top ten. I’m sure that can help me in the race and even try to finish in the top 5. This series is very competitive and I have a lot of respect for it.

Rick Ren, Crew Chief of the No. 51 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Telcel Tundra:

What impressed you the most about Germán at New Hampshire?

His thought process was pretty impressive. The way he thinks about things and describes things — he puts a lot of thought into what he is going to say before he gives you feedback. I believe that comes from being an experienced race car driver. If you look at his track record the last five years, he has two runner-ups and three championships in Mexico, so he looks at things a little bit different than your average driver. The racing in the Truck Series may be a little bit different than what he is used to, but the thought process it takes to be a champion is the same.

What will be Germán’s biggest challenge at Homestead-Miami?

He has probably never raced on a progressive banked race track like Homestead. It will be a little different at first, but he is a guy that drives race cars for a living and wins championships in Mexico, so he will still go through the same thought process on how to attack the race track. When we were at New Hampshire, he never once talked about being loose in. When you go to the next size race track, the biggest concern as a crew chief is if the driver is loose getting into the corner. If we don’t hear him saying that he is loose in this weekend, I think we’ll be fine.

What is the key to getting around Homestead-Miami Speedway?

I think that the biggest thing a driver needs to do at Homestead is not to apex the turn too early because it’s a race track that tends to drive tight off the corners. You need to be able to have the self-restraint to wait that extra second in the middle of the corner before you get back to the gas. Just like we did at New Hampshire, we’ll talk him through everything throughout the day. He did a great job of getting on and off pit road the first race, but we’ll be sure to remind him that it’s a little trickier getting on pit road with the increased speeds on a faster track. We’ll make sure that he practices his pit road entry a few times during practice.

Germán Quiroga’s No. 51 Telcel Toyota Tundra:

Chassis KBM-3: KBM-3 will be making its fifth start of 2011 this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Brian Ickler finished seventh in the Tundra’s debut last September at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Most recently, Josh Richards started 11th in the truck at Kentucky Speedway in October before being involved in an early incident that relegated him to a 34th-place finish.

Notes of Interest:

Germán Quiroga NASCAR Career:

- Finished 12th in the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway.

- In his lone NASCAR Nationwide Series start, led nine laps and finished 20th in the 2007 Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico.

- Made six NASCAR K&N Pro Series East starts during the 2007 season.

Kyle Busch Motorsports and the No. 51 Toyota Tundra:

- KBM’s second entry will be making its ninth start of the 2011 season.

- Josh Richards recorded a season-best 13th-place finish at Talladega Superspeedway for the No. 151 team (10/22/11).

- Quiroga, who finished 16th in his Truck Series debut at New Hampshire in July, is one of three drivers to have made their NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in KBM’s second entry this season. Kimi Räikkönen finished 15th in the N.C. Education Lottery 250 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Josh Richards was involved in accident that relegated him to a 29th-place finish in the UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway.

Quiroga and Hamlin Know How to Deliver for Their Sponsor:

Besides being teammates for Kyle Busch Motorsports this weekend, German Quiroga and Denny Hamlin have another thing in common – both drivers are sponsored by Fed Ex in their primary series. Quiroga drives the No. 2 Telcel / FedEx entry in the NASCAR Mexico Series and Hamlin drives the No. 11 FedEx Racing Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Ride of Champions:

All three drivers to make their NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in KBM’s second entry this season had captured at least one championship in another series before joining the team’s roster of drivers. Quiroga recently clinched his third consecutive NASCAR Mexico Series championship, while Kimi Räikkönen captured the 2007 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship and Josh Richards is a two-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion. Calling the shots atop the pit box for each driver has been KBM General Manager Rick Ren, who guided Ron Hornaday Jr. to Truck Series championships in 2007 and 2009.

(October 26, 2011) - This year’s Toyota Racing Sponsafy Your Ride Contest awarded one lucky fan a visit from his or her favorite Toyota NASCAR driver. The contest was promoted through a series of commercials that featured fans dreaming of how they would spend a day with their favorite driver, including one where a housewife kicks her feet back in a recliner as Denny Hamlin performs a variety of her household chores. The commercial opens with a shirtless Hamlin in her driveway blowing the woman a kiss and proclaiming, “It’s Denny Time,” as he washes the No. 11 Camry that she designed for the contest.

Kyle Busch wasn’t the winner of Sponsafier 3, but the 26-year-old team owner has elected to kick his feet up on the pit box and relax during Saturday’s Kroger 200 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway as Hamlin takes to the chore of trying to put Busch’s No. 18 Toyota/Traxxas Tundra in Victory Lane.

When asked how the deal came about to have Hamlin race the truck, Busch – who has registered runner-up finishes in each of his two starts behind the wheel of the No. 18 Tundra at Martinsville – replied, “I asked Denny if he would race the truck for me at Martinsville and he asked me why I didn’t want to run it. I just said, ‘Well, you’re better at Martinsville than I am and it would sure be nice to win there.’”

Busch couldn’t have dreamed up a better replacement than Hamlin. The Virginia native has won four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at his home-state track, including three of the last four, and has finished in the top-five in eight of his 12 Cup Series starts at “The Paperclip.”

Hamlin has posted five top-10 finishes in 11 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts, including two top 10s in four starts at Martinsville. His career-best result behind the wheel of a truck was a third-place finish in the 2008 E-Z Go 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga.

“It’s Denny Time” for Kyle Busch Motorsports this weekend and the team is hoping that Hamlin can deliver that elusive grandfather clock to the trophy room inside its headquarters in Mooresville, N.C.

Denny Hamlin, Driver of the No. 18 Toyota / Traxxas Tundra:

Are you excited about driving the Truck Series race at Martinsville?

“I’ve wanted to drive one of Kyle’s trucks for a long time. He has one of the most successful programs out there and I couldn’t pass this opportunity up. The Martinsville truck race is always an exciting one and I look forward to being a part of it.”

Eric Phillips, Crew Chief of the No. 18 Toyota / Traxxas Tundra:

You’ve been pretty dominant on the short tracks this season, what do you contribute that to?

“We got beat up a little bit last year on the short tracks, so we really worked hard this off season on building a new and improved truck for the short-track races. KBM-7 has been fast everywhere we’ve taken it and we’ve been able to win a few races with it. We’re bringing that truck this weekend and I think we’ll be one of the teams to beat again. We’ll unload with a similar setup to what we ran with Kyle in the spring and go from there. Goodyear is bringing a little different tire this time, so we’ll probably have to change our setup just a fuzz. We’ve been fast with both Kyle and Brian (Ickler) at Martinsville, but haven’t been able to get to Victory Lane. Denny is one of the best at getting around that place, so hopefully Saturday we can change that.”

Denny Hamlin’s No. 18 Toyota / Traxxas Tundra:

Chassis KBM-7: Since debuting at Phoenix earlier this season, KBM-7 has two wins and a runner-up finish in four starts. In “007′s” debut at Phoenix in February, Busch led the final 107 laps en route to his first victory of the season. The last time it saw the track, Busch lead 165 of 175 laps en route to his sixth victory of the season. Busch also drove the Tundra at Martinsville in March, where he led 67 laps before settling for a second-place finish.

Notes of Interest:

Denny Hamlin @ Martinsville:

- Collected two top-10 finishes in four NCWTS starts

- Led 60 or more laps in each of his last two NCWTS starts

- Started in the top five in each of his last three NCWTS starts

- Has won four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at his home-state track, including three of the last four, and has registered eight top-five finishes in 12 career Cup Series starts

- Finished third in the NASCAR Nationwide Series 2006 Goody’s 250

- Denny Hamlin’s Martinsville NCWTS Performance Profile:

Denny Hamlin Camping World Truck Series Career:

- Has posted five top-10 finishes in 11 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts

- Third-place finish in the 2008 E-Z Go 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga. was a career-best

Kyle Busch Motorsports and the No. 18 Toyota / Traxxas Tundra:

- Ranks second in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) owners’ point standings, 81 points behind KHI’s No. 2 team

- Ranks first in the NCWTS in wins (7) and second in laps led (809), fastest laps run (391) and top-five finishes (14)

- Since joining the NCWTS in 2010, the team has compiled 15 wins in 47 races

- Crew chief Eric Phillips ranks first among active crew chiefs with 25 career NCWTS wins and General Manager Rick Ren’s 27 wins as a crew chief are the most in the history of the NCWTS

- In 2010 became the first team since the NCWTS originated in 1995 to win the owners’ championship in its inaugural season

KBM and Traxxas Look to Continue Successful Partnership:

KBM’s No. 18 Tundra has been to victory lane five times in six races with Traxxas, the leading manufacturer of hobby-class radio-controlled (R/C) vehicles, onboard as a primary or co-primary sponsor the last two seasons. The partnership got off to a perfect start as Kyle Busch won all three races – Chicagoland, Talladega and Homestead -that the Plano, Texas-based company was onboard as a primary sponsor in 2010.

Traxxas has returned as a primary sponsor for three races this season. In their 2011 debut, Busch made it four-for-four with a dominating win at Dover. In their second primary this season, Busch was in contention for the win at Michigan before he ran over a piece of debris, which punctured a hole in the radiator, and was unable to finish the race.

In addition to their final primary sponsorship this season, which will be next week at Texas, Traxxas recently added two co-primary sponsorships. The first was last month at New Hampshire, where Busch led 165 of the 175 laps en route to his sixth victory of the season, and the second will be this weekend with Denny Hamlin behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota/Traxxas Tundra.

(October 18, 2011) - Kyle Busch will make his 100th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start in Saturday’s Coca-Cola 250 at Talladega Superspeedway. The driver of the No. 18 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra will be looking to add to an already impressive Truck Series resume, which among his many accomplishments includes victories in the last two races at the unforgiving 2.66-mile oval.

Over his first 99 career starts, the 26-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most prolific drivers in the history of the Truck Series. Busch’s 30 wins rank second on the all-time series wins list. Additionally, he ranks fourth all-time with 4,120 laps led, is tied for sixth with 12 poles and ranks ninth with 59 top-five finishes.

On Aug. 3, 2001, at the age of 16, the Las Vegas native made his Truck Series debut at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. After starting from the 23rd spot, Busch raced his way to a ninth-place finish in his first, of 574 – and counting – career starts among NASCAR’s top three divisions. He made five more Truck Series starts in 2001, highlighted by a near victory in his second series start, two top-five qualifying efforts and in what turned out to be his sixth and final start of the season, a second top-10 finish.

Busch was scheduled to make a seventh start that season, the maximum allowed – at the time – by NASCAR for a driver under the age of 18 in their first season, at the series finale at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The young driver was the fastest in practice for the Auto Club 200, but due to circumstances beyond his control, was unable to qualify or race his No. 99 truck. The then 16-year-old was ejected from the track by CART officials because the American Racing Wheels 200 was part of a CART weekend featuring the Marlboro 500 CART FedEx Championship Series event. Marlboro threw Busch out of the garage because of an interpretation of the Master Settlement Agreement of 1998, prohibiting persons under the age of 18 in participating in events sponsored by tobacco companies.

Shortly after the Auto Club Speedway incident, NASCAR – whose title sponsor at the time was also a tobacco company – enacted a minimum age requirement for the 2002 season, which forced Busch to put his NASCAR career on hold until his 18th birthday.

After spending two seasons honing his skills in the American Speed Association, Busch returned to NASCAR upon turning 18 in May of 2003. He registered three top-10 finishes in seven Nationwide Series races that season, but did not make a Truck Series start.

Busch returned to the Truck Series for one start in 2004 and in 2005 began running several Truck Series races each season alongside his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. In his first Truck Series start of 2005, at the age of 20 years and 18 days, he became the youngest driver in series history to earn a victory when he won the Quaker Steak & Lube 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In the next race at Dover International Speedway, he made it back-to-back victories and added his third career victory later that season at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Since scoring his first victory in 2005, Busch has won at least once each season and has scored multiple victories in each of the last five seasons.

In December of 2009, Busch entered the ownership ranks of the Truck Series when he announced that Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) would field a pair of entries for the 2010 season. With its owner behind the wheel for a series-leading eight wins in 2010, KBM’s No. 18 Tundra became the first team to win a Truck Series owners’ championship in their inaugural season since the series originated in 1995.

Entering this weekend’s race, Busch, the driver, has registered a series-leading six wins in 14 Truck Series starts this season while Busch, the owner, has tallied seven victories.

With no signs of slowing down, on or off the track, Kyle Busch – the owner and the driver – plans to keep on truckin’.

Other notable Truck Series highlights for Busch include:

- Has won 30.3% of the NCWTS races he has entered and finished first or second in 48.5%.

- Reached 25th win in NCWTS faster than any driver in the history of NASCAR’s top three series, attaining the milestone in just his 87th career start.

- 119.6 career driver rating entering the 2011 season is the highest accumulated by a NCWTS driver since the stat was introduced in 2005.

- Average career finish of 7.2 ranks first among active drivers with 50 or more career starts in the NCWTS.

Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch, Driver of the No. 18 NCWTS Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra:

What does the Truck Series mean to Kyle Busch?

“I love the Truck Series. I think it’s one of the best forms of racing we have in NASCAR. It’s definitely brought some excitement to the series over time with ESPN2 back in the 90s and of course with Speed Channel being the broadcast partner that we’ve had for the last few seasons. They’ve done a wonderful job for us. It’s definitely been a great series to run in, to be involved in, to win some races in and to now be owning a race team in the series is definitely great for myself and for all the people at Kyle Busch Motorsports that are employed there and that we can give jobs to and put food on the table for their families.

Without the sponsorships and without the strong partnerships that we have there, we wouldn’t be here and be doing what we do. We have to thank all those people with Dollar General, Flexco, Joy Mining Machinery, NOS Energy Drink, Traxxas, Toyota and I’m sure there are some that I am forgetting — forgive me.. It takes all of those people to stand behind you that can make your program successful and that you can build it.”

Eric Phillips, Crew Chief of the No. 18 NCWTS Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra:

What is the reason that tandem drafting hasn’t trickled down to the Truck Series?

“It’s a combination of a few different things. Probably the most obvious reason is that the bumpers on the trucks don’t line up as well as they do on the cars. Another reason is that most of the drivers in the Truck Series don’t have the same experience that the Nationwide and Cup guys do on the superspeedways and haven’t had the opportunity to tandem draft. The tandem drafting snuck up on people and we weren’t really prepared for it last year at Talladega — or this year at Daytona. Not only do the driver’s not have the experience, the teams in the Truck Series aren’t as experienced because we only run on the big tracks twice a year. Our staffs are smaller and we don’t have the time or resources to put into the research that is needed to prepare the trucks for the physical demand that the tandem drafting puts on the chassis and the motors. I think this weekend you’ll see a little bit more of two trucks working together to try and gain an advantage, but nothing like in the Cup Series where they are able to do it lap after lap.”

- Richards’ Returns to Truck Racing in ‘Dega: Saturday’s 250-mile NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race at Talladega Superspeedway will be 23-year-old Josh Richards’ seventh career start in the Truck Series. Richards made his NCWTS debut at Kentucky Speedway on July 7 with Kyle Busch Motorsports and sponsor Joy Mining Machinery.

- KBM at Talladega: The Mooresville, N.C-based Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) team has one career NCWTS start on Talladega Superspeedway’s 2.66-mile tri-oval. Owner Kyle Busch piloted the No. 18 entry to one of eight total wins in 2010 at the October NCWTS event at Talladega en route to claiming the 2010 Truck Series Owners’ Championship. In 56 total NCWTS starts since their inception in 2010, Kyle Busch Motorsports has earned 15 victories, 30 top-five finishes, 36 top-10 finishes and eight pole awards while leading 1,919 laps of competition.

- Joy Mining Machinery at Talladega: Richards’ sponsor, Joy Mining Machinery, will have a group of over 100 employees and customers present at the Talladega Paddock Club on Saturday to support Richards and the No. 51 Joy Mining Machinery Toyota Tundra it their seventh series start this season.

Josh Richards

- Josh Richards on this weekend’s race: “I’m excited to get on track at Talladega. Having a good leader like Rick Ren and an experienced team behind me, makes me feel more confident heading into Talladega. I look forward to racing on such a historic track.”

Crew Chief Rick Ren on working with a rookie driver at Talladega Superspeedway:

“I’ll have to give Josh some of the dos and don’ts about how you blend in, because the biggest thing is actually how you blend into the race track. You have to learn that when a group goes by you in excess of 190 mph it can pick you up and turn you right around on the race track with that big spoiler. I’ve had that happen with more than one rookie. The second thing we’re going to work on is trying to get him comfortable riding around there. I’ll start him on the bottom to get around there to not lift and get him comfortable. And then we’re going to have to get him into some drafting practice somewhere. I don’t want to put him in a three-wide situation during drafting practice. I think we need to keep him two-wide for practice. It’s important, so I need to teach him to learn to shift at the same point every time. It’s shifting, it’s pit road and if you get a little wiggle during draft, you can’t let off the draft, so there will be quite a bit to talk about.”

SPECIAL PAINT SCHEME AT MARTINSVILLE:

Richards will run a special paint scheme at Martinsville Speedway on October 29 highlighting artwork done by Alexandra and Hunter Vogel of Mooresville, N.C. The children’s artwork was created to honor the U.S. Navy SEALs and warriors who lost their lives fighting terrorism in Afghanistan on August 6, 2011.

Having been a part of a Navy family all of their lives, Hunter (9) and Alexandra (6) created artwork to show support for the Naval Special Warfare (NSW) families who lost loved ones on August 6. Hunter and Alexandra have since had their artwork made into stickers and have given them away to remind people of the sacrifices these and other warriors make everyday. As a result many who met Alexandra and Hunter and heard their story have made donations to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

The NSW Community lost 22 members on August 6. The fallen included Navy SEALs, Explosive Ordinance Disposal warriors, information systems professionals and cryptologic specialists. Along with these personnel, we also lost the Army aircrew, Air Force personnel and our Afghan partners that fight with our soldiers every day.

Richards met Hunter and Alexandra in August and has had their special sticker on his Joy Mining Machinery Toyota Tundra in Bristol, Atlanta and Kentucky. Richards’ partner Joy Mining Machinery was impressed by the story and the company decided they would help Josh help Alexandra and Hunter get the word out. The company created a special paint scheme and generously donated the hood branding on Richards’ entry into the NCWTS race at Martinsville Speedway on October 29 to showcase Alexandra and Hunter’s effort and artwork on the truck.

Alexandra and Hunter Vogel, their family, guests from the Navy SEAL Foundation and the NSW community will attend the NCWTS race at Martinsville as special guests of Richards and Joy Mining Machinery.

A website was created to help get the word out about the stickers and the fundraising effort. For more information go to www.NSWKids.com. To make a donation to the Navy SEAL Foundation, go to www.NavySEALFoundation.org.

CHASSIS SELECTION:

In Saturday’s Coca-Cola 250 powered by fred’s, Richards will drive chassis F59. Driver Tayler Malsam qualified sixth and finished 17th with this chassis in the 2010 NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona International Speedway in February 2010 in its lone start for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM)

As Brian Ickler continues to search for a full-time ride in one of NASCAR’s top three divisions, the 26-year-old driver has made a name for himself registering respectable finishes when called upon as Kyle Busch’s replacement in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series stand-alone events.

Saturday night’s Kentucky 225 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta was a vintage Ickler performance. In just his third truck start of the 2011 season, the San Diego native kept the No. 18 Toyota Tundra in the top 10 all night, led 11 laps and brought home a solid fifth-place finish for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

“The Toyota Tundra was just a little bit free all night, but we were able to end the night with a solid finish,” said Ickler, who registered his second top-five finish this season and sixth in 21 career Truck Series starts. “This team is in a battle for the owners’ championship and I wanted to give them a solid run to keep them in the hunt. Unfortunately, the 2 truck ended in Victory Lane and we lost a few points. The guys did a good job of making improvements throughout practice and providing me with a fast Tundra for the race and Eric Phillips made good calls atop the pit box. I want to thank Toyota, Dollar General, M&M’s, Flexco for their support of KBM. I’m looking forward to getting back in this No. 18 Tundra at Vegas in a few weeks.”

Ickler, who rolled off the grid from the fourth position, made it three wide for the lead as the field reached the start-finish line for the first time. Off Turn 2, the No. 18 Toyota Tundra cleared Austin Dillon and Ron Hornaday Jr. to assume the race lead down the backstretch. The No. 18 remained on point when Ickler’s teammate, Josh Richards, brought of the first caution of the race on lap four.

Hornaday Jr. and Dillon got back around Ickler shortly after the restart on lap 12 and the No. 18 Tundra settled into the third position. The KBM Tundra remained running third until the next caution occurred on lap 21. Ickler communicated to Phillips that his truck had been a little free during the early stages of the race. When pit road opened, Ickler brought his Tundra down pit road where KBM over-the-wall crew made trackbar and wedge adjustments, filled his No. 18 with fuel and returned him to the track in the fifth position.

Brian Ickler - Photo Credit: Jonathan Ferrey / Getty Images for NASCAR

The San Diego native continued to report that his Tundra was loose, especially in traffic, as he ran in the back half of the top 10 during the first 100 laps. Ickler had worked his way back up to the fourth position on lap 122 when Phillips called him down pit road under green-flag conditions for the final pit stop of the night. The KBM over-the-wall crew put right side tires on the No. 18 Toyota Tundra, filled it with fuel and returned their driver back to the track scored in the 12th position.

With teams on various pit strategies, Ickler slowly began regaining spots as the race progressed caution free towards the finish. On lap 143, the 26-year old had maneuvered his way back into the top five but was unable to advance further before the field took the checkered flag.

Hornaday Jr., the winningest driver in Truck Series history, picked up his 50th-career win. Dillon, who kept his spot atop the Truck Series driver point standings, finished second, .438-seconds behind Hornaday Jr. James Buescher finished third and Nelson Piquet Jr. came home fourth. Ricky Carmichael, Todd Bodine, Cole Whitt, Dakoda Armstrong and David Starr rounded out the top-10 finishers.

There were seven caution periods for 36 laps, with 13 drivers failing to finish the 150-lap race.

The No. 18 Tundra team now trails KHI’s No. 2 team by 41 owner points with five races remaining on the 2011 schedule.

The next event on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule is the Oct. 15 Smith’s 350 at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway. The race starts at 3:30 p.m. ET with live coverage beginning with the NCWTS Setup show at 3:00 p.m. ET on SPEED. Ickler will be back behind the wheel of the No. 18 Tundra.

NOTES AND QUOTES:

- Josh Richards made his debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) at Kentucky Speedway in July. On Saturday, Richards will pilot the No. 51 Joy Mining Machinery Tundra in his sixth NCWTS start this season. In his first race at the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval, Richards started 24th and finished 29th when his night came to an abrupt end after the Joy Mining Machinery Toyota Tundra was collected in a spin involving series veteran Ron Hornaday just past the midway point of the race. Although the night didn’t end the way Richards would have wanted, the 23-year-old driver felt like he learned a lot in his first series start.

- Partner Joy Mining Machinery will have more than 200 guests in attendance at Saturday’s race.

- In addition to his debut race in the NCWTS at Kentucky, Richards also has two career starts on the speedway’s 1.5-mile oval in the ARCA Racing Series.

Josh Richards

Driver Josh Richards on his second start at Kentucky Speedway:

“I’m glad we get to return Kentucky (Speedway) this season. The first race was definitely a learning experience but also disappointing since we didn’t get to finish the race. To have the opportunity to come back this quickly I think will be helpful. KBM is bringing the same truck back to the track that I raced at the first race at Kentucky and my last race in Atlanta, and with the added experience I’m really looking forward to this race. Joy Mining Machinery has invited over 200 employees and family members to the race, so it will be cool once again to have that support in the stands from such a great partner.”

Crew Chief Rick Ren:

It’s the first time Josh is returning to a track he’s raced in the truck series this year, will that help him a lot at Kentucky?

“Yeah, I think anytime a driver goes back to a track he has experience on, it gives a him a shot at having a much better performance. More importantly I think that in our last few races he’s improved a lot. We had a really good run at Atlanta, Josh and his race ability was far greater at Atlanta than the previous races, so I’m really looking forward to returning to Kentucky and getting him back to where he’s already raced. I think with what he’s learned since then and the Joy Mining Machinery Toyota Tundra we’ve prepared to bring to the track this weekend, I expect better results for our second go round.”

Having raced at Atlanta Motor Speedway, on what’s considered one of the faster, more difficult 1.5 mile tracks where he did well in practice and qualifying, and raced well; do you think the confidence he gained there will help him at Kentucky, a 1.5 mile track that’s considered not as difficult?

“Yeah, I put some pressure on him going into Atlanta about how difficult that place was going to be. I’ve been trying to get him to be more aggressive and attack the racetrack as soon as he gets in the truck for practice. He really showed that in Atlanta. If he can go to Kentucky and unload and immediately attack the track, we ultimately get a lot better feedback and a lot better results; and he’ll go there with a lot better state of mind and confidence. If a driver is able to immediately attack the track then he’ll start having confidence in the equipment and his ability, and it just makes things progress a lot faster. If he can do that, I think it will speed up everything and I really think we’ll be pretty fast when we unload there.”

CHASSIS SELECTION

Primary Chassis: KBM-3: Chassis 3 was the Toyota Tundra Richards raced at the July Kentucky Speedway race in his NCWTS debut. Richards also drove KBM-3 in his last NCWTS race at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he started ninth and finished 21st.

Winner: Kyle Busch of Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) (Toyota)

Kyle Busch Motorsports General Manager Rick Ren knows a thing or two about what it takes to be successful in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. After guiding two-time defending NASCAR Mexico Series Champion German Quiroga to a 16th-place finish in his Truck Series debut Saturday, the series’ all-time winningest crew chief believes that the 31-year-old driver showed that he has what it takes to compete full-time in NASCAR’s third division.

“German did a really good job for his first time driving a heavy vehicle with a lot of horsepower,” said Ren, who has been a part of three Truck Series championships. “Driving in this series is not that easy and I think that he showed the skills and maturity that will allow him to be competitive should he chose to come here full-time. From the time practiced started Friday morning until the race was over, we saw steady improvements from German. We didn’t make any adjustments during the race and his lap times just keep getting faster. You could tell that he was figuring out how to drive into the corners, changing his breaking points and picking up the gas earlier as the race progressed. At the end of the race, he got a little racier and started passing people. If we could come back and run this race again tomorrow, I’m confident that the result would be a top 10-finish. We’re really happy with the job he did for us this weekend and hopeful that we can find a way to get him back in one of our Tundras for another race before the end of the season.”

Quiroga, who started the race from the 17th position, lost a few spots in the early stages of the race as he worked on getting comfortable driving his Telcel Tundra in traffic. While Quiroga was just trying to get comfortable, Kyle Busch was more than comfortable with his No. 18 Tundra and set a blistering pace as the race proceeded under green-flag conditions. The boss worked his way around his newest employee on lap 40, putting Quiroga one lap down.

When the first caution of the race occurred on lap 61, the 31-year-old driver had settled back into the 17th position. He communicated to Ren that the handling of his Telcel Tundra was “very good” and did not want the crew to make any changes during the first pit stop. Quiroga brought his truck down pit road for four fresh tires and fuel and returned to the track scored one lap down in the 17th position.

The Mexico City native continued to run in the top 20 as the race proceeded caution free towards the finish. Ren brought Quiroga down pit road for four fresh tires and fuel on lap 134 and returned his driver to the track scored two laps down in the 20th position.

German Quiroga

Over the last forty laps, the 31-year-old appeared to find the feel for his No. 51 Telcel Tundra as he posted improved lap times and maneuvered his way around competitors for position. By the time he crossed the finish line, Quiroga had worked his way into a respectable 16th-place finish.

“Overall, I am very happy with the end result and I believe that Telcel will be happy with my performance as well,” said Quiroga. “The guys at Kyle Busch Motorsports were a pleasure to work with and provided me with a Telcel Tundra that was definitely a top-10 truck. I got caught up in traffic and went a lap down in the early stages of the race. When the race stayed green for a long period, I was never able to get back on the lead lap. I enjoyed my first experience racing in the Truck Series and hope to be back soon.”

Busch led 165 of 175 laps en route to his third-consecutive Truck Series victory at “The Magic Mile.” Dillon, who took over the lead in Truck Series driver points, finished second, 3.816-seconds behind Busch. Kevin Harvick finished third, Ron Hornaday Jr. was fourth and Johnny Sauter fifth. Matt Crafton, James Buescher, Todd Bodine, Timothy Peters and Miguel Paludo rounded out the top 10.

There were two caution periods for seven laps, with nine drivers failing to finish the 175-lap race.

The next event on the NCWTS schedule is the Oct. 1 Kentucky 225 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. The race starts at 8 p.m. ET with live coverage beginning with the NCWTS Setup show at 7:30 p.m. ET on SPEED. Josh Richards will be back behind the wheel of KBM’s No. 51 Tundra.

(September 20, 2011)- When the Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) travel crew lands in Manchester, N.H. Thursday, they might want to consider making a trip to Foxwoods Resort Casino. As the team prepares for this weekend’s F.W. Webb 175 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, everything seems to be coming up sevens.

- KBM’s primary chassis for Saturday’s race will be KBM-7

- Kyle Busch has seven career victories across NASCAR’s top three series at New Hampshire

- Busch is making his seventh career start in the Truck Series at New Hampshire

- Including this weekend’s race, there are seven races remaining on the 2011 NCWTS schedule

- KBM’s No. 18 Tundra is seeking its series-leading seventh win of the 2011 season

- The team’s last win came in the UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta on July, 7 (7/7)

- Speaking of casinos, if winning streaks were playing cards, Busch’s hand at New Hampshire would feature a full house. The 26-year-old driver has left the last two Truck Series races with a pair of wins and on top of that, he has three consecutive wins in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at “The Magic Mile.”

Busch’s victory in July’s New England 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the 1.058-mile oval earned him a pair of milestones. The win was his 100th National Series win and also his 49th career win in the Nationwide Series, which tied him with Mark Martin atop the series all-time wins list. Since the July race, the Las Vegas native has captured two more Nationwide Series victories and now stands alone atop the series record book with 51 career wins.

Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch, Driver of the No. 18 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra:

What does it take to be successful at New Hampshire?

“Loudon is a pretty particular racetrack. It’s tough. It’s not like Phoenix. It’s not like Dover at all. It’s a flat racetrack and it’s really typical of a tough racetrack to pass on. You can’t just have a really good racecar and finish up front. You have to keep track position. You have to keep up all day and make everything work.”

Eric Phillips, Crew Chief of the No. 18 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra:

Are you looking forward to racing at a short track this weekend?

“We’ve struggled a little bit on the mile-and-a-half tracks recently, so we’re excited to be going to New Hampshire this weekend for some short track racing. We are taking the same Tundra, KBM-7, which we won with earlier this season at Phoenix and finished second with at Martinsville. The truck will have a similar setup to what we ran at those two tracks.”

Is New Hampshire similar to either Phoenix or Martinsville?

“New Hampshire and Phoenix are both one-mile flat-tracks, but each has its own unique characteristics. At New Hampshire, the straightaways are very straight and the turns are tight, where at Phoenix the backstretch has a dog-leg and the turns are wider. People would be surprised to know that New Hampshire is even flatter than Martinsville. New Hampshire is similar to Martinsville in the fact that you have to rotate the center very well to be fast, but forward bite isn’t nearly as hard to get a hold of as it is at Martinsville.”

Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Toyota Tundra:

Chassis KBM-7: Kyle Busch led the final 107 laps en route to victory in “007′s” debut at Phoenix International Raceway in February. In the Tundra’s second mission, Busch led 67 laps at Martinsville Speedway in March before settling for a second-place finish. The last time that KBM-7 saw the track, Brian Ickler finished 14th at Iowa Speedway in June.

Notes of Interest:

Kyle Busch @ New Hampshire:

- Has captured back-to-back victories in the NCWTS race — started from the pole and led 156 of the 175 laps en route to victory in last year’s RaceDayRaffleSeries.com 175 (9/18/10) and led 75 laps en route to victory in the 2009 Heluva Good 200 (9/19/09).

- Ranks first among NCWTS drivers over the last six races in Green Flag Passes (204) and Quality Passes (162), and ranks second in Driver Rating (113.2), Laps Led (282) and Fastest Laps Run (130).

- Has recorded three straight victories in the Nationwide Series race, including his historic 100th All-Time Combined National Series win in July (7/16/11)

- Won the 2006 Lenox Industrial Tools 300 Sprint Cup Series race (7/16/06).

Kyle Busch 2011 Camping World Truck Series:

- In 13 starts this season, has won a series-leading five races (Phoenix, Nashville, Dover, Charlotte, Kentucky) and registered a series-leading 10 top-five finishes

KBM’s No. 18 Tundra team has collected an impressive 14 wins over its 42-race existence. As the NCWTS heads into the final seven races on the 2011 schedule, the team will need to add to that total if it plans on overtaking the KHI No. 2 team in this year’s owners’ point standings. The No. 18 team has visited Victory Lane at five of the seven tracks remaining on this year’s schedule. During the 2010 season, Kyle Busch won Truck Series races at New Hampshire, Talladega, Texas and Homestead, and this season he brought home the trophy at Kentucky. KBM’s owner/driver is scheduled to be behind the wheel of the No. 18 Tundra at the four tracks where he won last year, but the Kentucky race is a stand-alone event and Busch will be in Dover for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race that weekend.

(September 20, 2011)- Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) announced today that two-time defending NASCAR Mexico Series Champion German Quiroga will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in the F.W. Webb 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Saturday, Sept. 24. Quiroga has signed a one-race deal to pilot KBM’s No. 51 Toyota Tundra with sponsorship from Telcel, the leading provider of wireless communications services in Mexico.

With four races remaining on the 2011 NASCAR Mexico Series schedule, Quiroga currently holds a 110-point lead in his quest for a third-consecutive championship. In 10 races this season, the 31 year old has collected one win, captured two poles and recorded five second-place finishes. In addition to his two Mexico Series championships, the Mexico City native has finished second in the points twice and his 15 career victories rank second in series history.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to represent Telcel, my fellow Mexicans and all of Latin America driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway,” Quiroga said. “I want to thank God for this opportunity, my family for their loving support and Carlos Slim and Jimmy Morales for believing in me the last five years. I have worked hard to win two championships and achieve a successful career racing in the NASCAR Mexico Series and promise to work harder than ever to assure that my success continues as I strive to achieve new goals. I believe that to continue my growth as a professional driver, the logical next step is to explore opportunities to drive NASCAR in the United States and I hope that this weekend’s race is just the beginning of a long and prosperous relationship with Kyle Busch Motorsports.”

“Over the last few years German has established himself as the premier driver in the NASCAR Mexico Series by winning races and capturing back-to-back championships,” said KBM General Manager Rick Ren. “This one-race deal is an opportunity for him to test the waters in the Truck Series and evaluate if driving in this series full-time is something he would like to pursue. The strong international presence we currently have in the Truck Series with Max Papis, Miguel Paludo and Nelson Piquet Jr is a major reason that our fan base continues to grow and our television ratings continue to increase. Adding German to the mix would be great for this series and we look forward to providing him with a positive experience on and off the track this weekend.”

Quiroga posted a respectable 12th-place finish in the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway in January. In his lone NASCAR Nationwide Series start, he led nine laps and finished 20th in the 2007 Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico. Quiroga’s NASCAR resume also includes six NASCAR K&N Pro Series East starts during the 2007 season, including the New England 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Chassis KBM-5: Chassis KBM-5 will be making its third career start on Saturday. The last time the Tundra was on the track, Josh Richards was running in the top 15 in the AAA Insurance 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway before being relegated to a 22nd-place finish after having to stop for fuel inside of 10 laps remaining. In the truck’s debut last season, Brian Ickler qualified fourth and ran second for 60 laps before going two laps down after being involved in an accident on lap 80. Ickler fought back to earn a lead-lap 13th-place finish.

Notes of Interest:

German Quiroga @ New Hampshire:

- Started 32nd and finished 33rd after being involved in an accident on lap 104 of the New England 125 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race (6/29/07)

Kyle Busch Motorsports and the No. 51 Toyota Tundra:

- KBM’s second entry will be making its fifth start of the 2011 season

- Josh Richards qualified ninth and finished 21st in the team’s most recent outing at Atlanta Motor Speedway (9/2/11)

- German Quiroga will be the third different driver to make their NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in KBM’s second entry this season — Kimi Räikkönen finished 15th in the N.C. Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Josh Richards was involved in accident that relegated him to a 29th-place finish in the UNOH 225 at Kentucky Speedway

Ride of Champions:

All three drivers to make their NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut in KBM’s second entry this season had captured at least one championship in another series before joining the team’s roster of drivers. Kimi Räikkönen captured the 2007 Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship, Josh Richards is the two-time defending World Of Outlaws Late Model Series champion and German Quiroga is the two-time defending NASCAR Mexico Series champion. Calling the shots atop the pit box for each driver’s debut has been KBM General Manager Rick Ren, who guided Ron Hornaday Jr. to Truck Series championships in 2007 and 2009.

(September 13, 2011) – Being a Chicago Bulls fan, Kyle Busch is very familiar with the term three-peat. Busch’s beloved Bulls made the term prevalent in the 90′s after they won three consecutive NBA Championships from 1990 to 1993 and then repeated the feat from 1995 to 1997.

Busch will be looking to make like “Da Bulls” and three-peat as the winner of Friday’s Fast Five 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill. The 26-year-old has breezed through the competition in each of the first two Truck Series races held in the Windy City. He led 121 of the 154 laps in last year’s race and 79 of the 150 laps in the inaugural Truck Series race at the 1.5-mile D-Shaped oval.

The Bulls three-peat was led by Michael Jordan, viewed by many as one of the most talented players in the history of the NBA, but equally as important to Chicago’s success was the supporting cast of players and coaches the team built around their superstar. Busch, viewed by many as one of the most talented drivers in NASCAR, has assembled a strong supporting cast on the No. 18 Dollar General Tundra team, including two of the most successful crew chiefs in the history of the Truck Series.

General Manager Rick Ren, from Tilton, Ill, is the winningest crew chief in the history of the Truck Series. As a crew chief, Ren led his drivers to 27 wins before moving into a managerial role at Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) in 2010. Since moving into his role at KBM, Ren has help guide the team to 14 wins in just 52 races. Crew chief Eric Phillips, from Canton, Ill., is the Truck Series’ active leader in wins with 24 trips to Victory Lane in his career.

Not only does Busch have a strong team behind him, the Las Vegas native will have a strong Toyota Tundra underneath him. The No. 18 Dollar General Racing team will be unloading chassis KBM-4, which has been to Victory Lane seven times in 11 starts since making its debut at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May of 2010. KBM-4 is the same Tundra that Busch drove to victory lane in last year’s Truck Series race at Chicagoland.

Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch, Driver of the No. 18 Dollar General NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra:

Are you looking forward to racing at Chicago?

“Chicago is a great city, one that I always enjoy when I visit. Chicago fans are very passionate about their sports and with this weekend being the first race of the Chase, I think it will be a great atmosphere. I’m definitely looking forward to not only the racing at Chicago, but all the festivities going on Wednesday and Thursday to promote the start of the Chase. Once all the off-track festivities are over, it will be like any other race weekend and my focus will switch to the action on the track. We had a strong Toyota last year and we’re confident that we can get the Dollar General Tundra back in Victory Lane Friday night.”

Do the track conditions change a lot from day to night at Chicagoland?

“The track conditions at Chicagoland don’t seem to change much from day to night. You gain some grip when the temperatures get cooler, but the balance of your truck remains pretty consistent. At Atlanta, it was really hot during practice, the track was very slick and as practiced progressed we weren’t able to get a feel for the changes we were making. Once you reached a certain point in practice, you were just out there making laps. This weekend, we’ll be able to use the practice time in the morning to make quality laps and really dial in our Dollar General Tundra for the race.”

Eric Phillips, Crew Chief of the No. 18 Dollar General NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra:

Being from Illinois, is the Chicagoland race one that you look forward to?

“I grew up about two and a half hours from the track and spent a lot of time in the Chicago area, so this is a race I look forward to each year. With Samantha (Busch) being from the area as well, I know this is a race that Kyle and Samantha would like to win. We’ve changed a few things around on our setup since Atlanta and feel like we’re bringing an improved Dollar General Tundra this weekend. We’re putting our best foot forward and ready to get on the track Friday to see the results.”

Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Dollar General Toyota Tundra:

Chassis KBM-4: Since making its debut at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May of 2010, the Tundra has been to Victory Lane seven times in 11 starts, including three times this season (Darlington, Nashville, Kentucky).
“Riding Shotgun with Kyle Busch Motorsports” Essay Contest Winner Honors Friend Who Beat Leukemia:

10-year-old Claire Winiarski from Naperville, Ill., was selected the winner of the “Riding Shotgun with Kyle Busch Motorsports” essay contest for Chicagoland Speedway. Winiarski, per a request in her essay, will use the unique opportunity of having her name on Kyle Busch’s Tundra to honor her friend, Varsha Jayasundar, who recently beat leukemia. Jayasundar’s name and a picture of the two friends together will adorn the area above the passenger side window of the No. 18 Dollar General Tundra for the Fast Five 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Friday, Sept. 16. Both girls will have the opportunity to attend the race compliments of Chicagoland Speedway.

KBM has Already Proven “Eight is Enough”:

With 17 of 25 races completed this season, Kyle Busch Motorsports’ No. 18 team trails Kevin Harvick Inc.’s No. 2 team by 36 points in the NCWTS owners’ point standings. With eight races remaining last season, the No. 18 team found themselves trailing Steve Germain’s No. 30 team by 48 points. Over the final eight races, the No. 18 Tundra went to victory lane four times, finished second twice and registered an average finish of 2.8 en route to becoming the first team since the Truck Series originated in 1995 to capture the NCWTS owners’ championship in its inaugural season.

- Josh Richards will make his debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) on Friday piloting the No. 15 Joy Mining Machinery Toyota Tundra fielded by Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) This will be his fifth race in the series and first time to race at the 1.54 mile quad oval.

KBM at Atlanta Motor Speedway

- In 2010 owner-driver Kyle Busch started second and finished second in the NCWTS race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Driver Josh Richards on racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway:

- “I’m excited about going to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Friday. I’ve heard a lot about it from (crew chief) Rick Ren and I know it’s going to be a challenge. I’ve heard it’s a fast track and I look forward to getting out there, but I know I’ll have a lot to learn once we start practice on Friday.”

Crew Chief Rick Ren

“Atlanta’s going to be a little bit of a challenge. It will be a bit bigger test than Indy or Bristol, it can be forgiving but you have to be aggressive at Atlanta, it has very high-speed corners. It will probably be the most challenging place we’ve gone to with Josh, Kentucky was a handful for his first race, but Atlanta is tough, fighting your way around there will be a little bit difficult. We’ve had a lot of experiences there and won some races, we’ll be able to discuss that with him and get everything lined up there. This will be the test to see how much he’s improved over the last couple of races.”

CHASSIS SELECTION

Primary Chassis: KBM-3: Chassis 3 was the Toyota Tundra Josh raced at Kentucky Speedway in July. Prior to that, Kimi Raikkonen drove it in his NCWTS debut at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. Raikkonen qualified 31st, but made his way as high as fifth before coming home with a 15th place finish in his first ever start in the series.

BROADCAST: Wednesday, August 24, 8:00 p.m. ET SPEED, MRN 7:45 p.m., Sirius NASCAR 90

NOTES AND QUOTES

- Two-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Josh Richards will make his debut at Bristol Motor Speedway and his fourth career start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) this week. In Wednesday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 200, Richards will pilot the No. 51 Joy Mining Machinery Toyota Tundra fielded by Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM).

- This will be Richards’ first time to race at the World’s Fastest Half Mile, but the twenty three year-old did visit the track in 2000 and 2001 when his family’s race team entered the dirt late model races when the 0.533 mile track was temporarily a dirt oval. The historic track’s 0.533-mile oval was converted to dirt for a short time in both years requiring 14,000 truckloads (8,000 cubic feet) of red clay to cover the paved surface. The lap record of 13.86 seconds stood from 2000 until 2011 when Sammy Swindell made the fastest lap recorded at Bristol in a World of Outlaws Sprint car.

- Joy Mining Machinery will have over 350 employees and customers as guests to the speedway for hospitality and the NCWTS race on Wednesday. The guests are employees and customers coming from five Joy facilities within 160 miles of the speedway including engineering, manufacturing, warehouse and service centers.

- On Thursday, Richards will visit with one of Joy Mining Machinery’s biggest customers for a company picnic in Abingdon, Virginia with over 300 employees.

KBM at Bristol Motor Speedway:

- Team owner Kyle Busch won the NCWTS race at Bristol in 2010 from the pole and led 116 laps.

Driver Josh Richards on racing at Bristol Motor Speedway:

“Believe it or not, I’ve been to Bristol (Motor Speedway) for two dirt races, but never for a pavement race. I went in 2000 and 2001 when they converted the track to dirt for some races. That was really cool to have the opportunity to see that and to be at those races. This place was fast when it was dirt, and I know it’s going to be fast on Wednesday.”

“I spent some time this week talking with Rick and Kyle about Bristol. They talked with me about how the truck is set up, what line I need to run, when to brake and when not to brake. They gave me a lot of information that I can take on track with me.”

“I really can’t wait to get out there to see what it’s like. I know that KBM has brought a great truck for us, and I’m ready to get on track. I’m looking forward to having Kyle at the track again this week. He’s won here 11 times, with wins in all three series. To have that kind of mentor is an incredible benefit.”

Crew Chief Rick Ren:

“Josh showed a lot of improvement in his last race at Indianapolis. Now we’re going back to a short track, so it should give him some more confidence. Bristol is a little intimidating though if you’ve never been there. This week we worked with him to understand the line, and just about how to maneuver around Bristol. It’s tough to tell a driver when you go to a place like Bristol to stay away from the brake pedal, but that’s what you have to do at Bristol in a truck. You have to attack the track, get in the gas and stay away from the brake pedal. When we started practice at Indy, he really started to attack the racetrack differently than he had before. I expect to see more progression this week and he’ll have to attack the racetrack a lot harder, because Bristol’s not forgiving and you have to be very aggressive, attack the wheel and mash the gas.”

“Another important thing for Josh this week is to really pay attention to the spotter, more so than ever. Things happen even more quickly at Bristol than they do at other places. Josh is used to dirt racing without a radio, so he picks his own holes and sees where he’s going and makes his own maneuvers, at Bristol when the spotter says clear, you might only have two inches to go, so you have to take the opportunity. We’ll work on him on that during practice, he’s new at this having a spotter so the trust factor might not be there, but you really get in trouble quick if you don’t listen to your spotter.”

CHASSIS SELECTION:

(August 23, 2011) – If Victory Lane at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway was registered as a Foursquare location, Kyle Busch undoubtedly would be “The Mayor.” Busch has checked into Victory Lane after each of the last five races held in NASCAR’s top three series at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile” and will be looking to make it six straight Wednesday night driving the No. 18 Dollar General Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) O’Reilly Auto Parts 200.

Last August, the Las Vegas native made NASCAR history when he became the first driver to sweep an entire race weekend, winning the NCWTS, NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races at Bristol. This March, the 26-year introduced fans to the abbreviated version of the Bristol Sweep, winning the NNS race on Saturday and the Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday. Not only has Busch won the last five races at Bristol, he has led over half of the total laps (936 of 1,756) during those races.

<img src="http://www.catchfence.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/2011-Phoenix-Feb-NCWTS-Kyle-Busch-prerace-280x186.jpg" alt="Kyle Busch - Photo Credit: Jared C. Tilton / Getty Images for NASCAR

Kyle Busch, Driver of the No. 18 Dollar General NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra:

What was it like to sweep all three races in the same weekend last year at Bristol?

“It was pretty cool because, when you come so close and then don’t get it, it’s pretty frustrating. In 2009, we won the Truck race and we were leading the Nationwide race and we got crashed out, and then we ended up winning the Cup race. So, it was probably a year delayed. There have been some other times we’ve come close to getting it done at other places, too. It was pretty special. It was cool to be able to put it all together in a complete weekend, with the truck, with the Nationwide car and with the Cup car.”

What makes racing at Bristol so exciting?

“Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the best racetracks on the circuit. All the fans love it because of the excitement, the run-ins, and the close-quarter action with all the cars being packed on top of one another at a half-mile racetrack with us 43 lunatics running around in a tight circle – or in this case, with the trucks thirty-something lunatics. With the fans, the atmosphere there always makes for a good time. It’s a fun place that you go to that you like going to. You enjoy the race around there. We grew up at the (Las Vegas Motor Speedway) Bullring and stuff like that. Maybe not as banked as Bristol is, but I love going and racing at Winchester (Ind.), Slinger (Wisc.), and Salem (Ind.), where I’ve raced before. Those are all really high-banked racetracks that are a half-mile in distance, or a quarter. They’re really fun to race around and you kind of get a great feel for racing in a bowl. You go down the straightaway and you slam it into the corners and you mash the gas and you kind of sling right back out of the corners. It’s a lot of fun to do that. It’s kind of an art. Some guys are really good at it, and some find a knack that makes them really good at it and make it seem easy.”

Eric Phillips, Crew Chief of the No. 18 Dollar General NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra:

Has the new surface at Bristol changed how you setup your truck for the race?

“As far as the setup on the truck, you still battle some of the same issues as you did with the old surface. You fight being free into the corners, tight in the center and loose off. To have a fast truck, you need to try and put together a package that is stable into the corners but still allows your driver to turn in the center and put down the power off of the corners.”

Does the new points system add a level of excitement to the battle for the owners’ championship over the last 10 races?

“The new points system definitely adds a level of excitement to the battle for the championship. This system is a lot simpler, so you understand exactly how far ahead – or behind – you are in the standings. It seems to be really hard to gain any points. You can have some really good weeks and you might only gain three or four points, but when you have a bad week – like we did in Michigan- you lose 20 or 25 points. It’s hard to make up points with the new system, so we’re going to have to be really good over these last 10 races.”
