(January 18, 2012) – RAB Racing with Brack Maggard has named Chris Rice as crew chief for John Wes Townley’s No. 09 Toyota Tundra for the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.

Rice, a South Boston, Va., native, has been with RAB Racing since July 2011, working as Director of Special Projects.

“I’m looking forward to working with John Wes Townley in 2012,” said Rice. “With the aid of our Nationwide Series program and Toyota support, it is going to be a great season. I want to thank RAB Racing for providing us with the opportunity to compete for the Rookie of the Year title in the Camping World Truck Series. It has been exciting to see this team expand and I hope to bolster these efforts moving forward.”

Rice, a former race-winning crew chief in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, has experience atop the pit box in all three of NASCAR’s top divisions since 2003. In his most recent stint serving as crew chief for a Camping World Truck Series team, Rice garnered one top-five and two top-10s in 15 starts with driver Shelby Howard in 2008.

“Chris played an integral role with our Nationwide Series team last year and assisted Scott Zipadelli on numerous projects,” said Robby Benton, owner of RAB Racing. “When the Camping World Truck Series opportunity came about, he was the natural fit for both our team and for driver John Wes Townley. Chris and John Wes worked together for a few events in 2009 when he was driving our Nationwide Series entry and then reconnected with him several weeks ago as crew chief for a NASCAR regional series event at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Chris brings along a wealth of experience and knowledge and I look forward to growing our Truck program around him.”

(January 13, 2012) – RAB Racing with Brack Maggard announced today that John Wes Townley will compete for 2012 Rookie of the Year honors in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, driving its Toyota Tundra.

Townley, 22, has made seven starts in the Camping World Truck Series, most recently at Phoenix International Raceway in November, 2008.

Townley will join teammate Kenny Wallace, driver of the No. 09 Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

“I’m looking forward to this year,” Townley said. “It’s good to be racing in the Camping World Truck Series again, and doing it with RAB Racing makes it that much better.”

While the season-opening event will mark Townley’s first laps at Daytona International Speedway in Camping World Truck Series competition, he is no stranger to the World Center of Racing. In three ARCA Racing Series starts, the Watkinsville, Ga., native has two top-five finishes, including a career-best finish of third in February, 2010.

“I’m looking forward to expanding our operation and racing in the Camping World Truck Series,” said Robby Benton, owner of RAB Racing. “We’ll have a presence in two NASCAR garage areas this year, and I’m happy to be adding another strong Toyota entry. We started our current Nationwide Series program with John Wes, and we’re happy to be starting our Truck Series presence with him, as well.”

Townley will be backed by new sponsors for the 2012 season, as well as current sponsors of RAB Racing’s NASCAR Nationwide Series program.

The 22-race NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule kicks off on February 24 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla., and concludes November 16 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

A crew chief for the team will be named at a later date.

(October 3, 2011) – RAB Racing with Brack Maggard traveled to Dover International Speedway this Saturday to compete in the OneMain Financial 200. Though the No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Toyota Camry was fast in final practice, a relatively caution-free race made it difficult for the team to advance positions after being caught on pit road during a caution.

Back after an off-weekend, driver Kenny Wallace piloted the No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Toyota Camry to a solid 8th place position on the speed charts in final NASCAR Nationwide Series practice. Wallace’s speed was reaffirmed in qualifying when he posted the 10th fastest qualifying effort.

After the green flag flew over the “Monster Mile”, Wallace brought the car to pit road for a few adjustments. Re-emerging in 18th position, Wallace powered the No. 09 Toyota Camry through the field to 14th by midrace, running laps comparable to the top five at that time.

Unfortunately, the caution flag flew during a routine green-flag pit stop on Lap 156 putting the No. 09 a lap down with 40 laps to go. Wallace returned to the racetrack in the 16th position with three cars in front of him also down a lap. The race concluded caution-free, providing no opportunity for Wallace to gain his lap back. The No. 09 finished in the 16th position.

With only five events remaining on the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule, Wallace heads to Kansas solidly inside the top-10 in the NNS driver point standings in seventh position. The No. 09 holds steady at 13th in the NNS owner point standings.

Wallace and RAB Racing will join the NASCAR Nationwide Series next at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, October 8th, to tough it out over 300 miles in the Kansas Lottery 200. Live coverage begins at 3:30PM EST on ESPN 2 and 3:00PM ET on MRN.

5-Hour Energy Team News and Notes

This Week’s 5 Hour Energy Toyota … Steve Wallace will pilot Rusty Wallace Racing chassis RWR-068 in Saturday afternoon’s Dollar General 300. This is a brand new 5-Hour Energy Toyota Camry that will be put through its first paces this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.

Through 27 Races … With 27 races of the 2011 season in the record books, Wallace has accumulated two top-five, five top 10 and 14 top-15 finishes, an average starting position of 13.2 and an average finish of 15.7. Wallace has completed 98 percent of the laps contested (4,897 of 4,997) thus far.

Get to the Points … Wallace continues to maintain the eighth position in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver point standings. With seven races remaining in the 2011 season, Wallace trails seventh-place driver Kenny Wallace by 21 markers, and holds a 21-point cushion over eighth-place contender and Rusty Wallace Racing teammate, Michael Annett.

Wallace at Chicagoland … In five NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Chicagoland Speedway, Wallace has recorded three top-20 finishes. His best finish at the 1.5-mile, D-shaped tri-oval is 12th, where he has finished twice. Additionally, the 24-year-old driver has has completed 98.9 percent of the laps contested (992 of 1,003) and has been atop the leaderboard for two laps.

Former Winner … While Wallace has not yet won at Chicagoland Speedway in Nationwide Series competition, he has visited Victory Lane there once before. Driving the No. 61 machine for Rusty Wallace Racing, Wallace won the sixth running of the ARCA Series race from the pole in 2006.

Intermediate Averages … In 102 NASCAR Nationwide Series intermediate track starts, Wallace has accrued one pole, three top-five and 16 top-10 finishes, and has led 12 laps.

Welcome Aboard … 5-Hour Energy Racing welcomes Dominick’s and Casey’s as partners for this weekend’s race at Chicagoland Speedway. Dominick’s branding will adorn the TV panel of Wallace’s No. 66 Toyota in Saturday afternoon’s race, while Casey’s logos will be displayed on the lower rear quarter panels.

Last Time Out … Wallace appeared to have a top-five finish in his sights last Friday night at Richmond International Raceway, but a flat right rear tire two-thirds of the way through the event relegated the 24-year-old driver to a 16th-place finish.

Rusty Wallace Racing at Chicagoland … Chicagoland Speedway hasn’t been kind to Rusty Wallace Racing over the years. In 12 combined NASCAR Nationwide Series starts, Rusty Wallace Racing has earned just one top-10 finish, coming in June 2011 when Michael Annett drove the No. 62Toyota to a ninth-place finish in the STP 300. Rusty Wallace Racing entries have led three laps of competition and have completed 2,129 of the 2,406 (88.5 percent) laps contested in those events.

Rusty Wallace Racing in 2011 … With 27 of 34 races completed thus far in the 2011 season, Rusty Wallace Racing’s three NASCAR Nationwide Series entries have recorded a combined three top-five, 12 top 10 and 29 top-15 finishes. Rusty Wallace Racing Toyotas have completed 10,581 of 11,219 laps attempted, and have been atop the leaderboard for 19 laps with drivers Michael Annett, Jason Bowles, David Reutimann and Steve Wallace.

Wallace’s No. 66 entry trails Robby Benton, currently ranked 13th, by 21 points.

Cast Your Vote … Voting has begun for the Most Popular Driver of the Year award in the Nationwide Series. Fans are encouraged to log onto NASCAR.com to vote for their favorite driver from the series once per day until voting ends on Thursday, November 17.

“I’m looking forward to getting to Chicago this weekend. (September 12, 2011) – Kenny Wallace earned his first top-five and his best finish of the season in Friday night’s Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway. A three-time NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) winner at the famed Virginia short-track, Wallace and RAB Racing with Brack Maggard expected no less than a top-five finishing position after contending with the leaders and Sprint Cup Series regulars for the majority of the 250-lap event.

Sporting the Federated Auto Parts paint scheme for the fifth time this season, Wallace and the RAB Racing team proved they had the speed to contend for a win posting the third fastest practice speed. This momentum carried over into qualifying and the team earned a solid fifth place starting position. By Lap 10, Wallace was running faster laps than the leader and by Lap 40 he was turning the fastest laps in the field. Radio communication between the team confirmed how well the car was handling and how motivated Wallace was.

Though the No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Toyota Camry got caught behind a slow car after a pit stop on Lap 70 and emerged in eighth, it didn’t take Wallace long to power the car back through the field and to a fifth place finishing position.

Because Wallace was one of the top four highest-finishing Nationwide Series drivers, he qualified for the Dash 4 Cash at Charlotte Motor Speedway. If he is the highest finisher amongst the four eligible drivers in the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage, he will be awarded a $100,000 bonus! This will only add to the excitement of the weekend as Wallace will be piloting the fan-sponsored No. 09 Toyota Camry.

NASCAR’s Nationwide Series heads north this weekend to the Windy City for the Dollar General 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. Live coverage begins Saturday, September 17th at 3:30PM ET on ESPN2 and 3:00PM ET on MRN.

(August 15, 2011) – RAB Racing with Brack Maggard and driver Kenny Wallace tackled the road course of Watkins Glen this weekend. The rain remained at bay for the NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers to complete all 82 laps on the challenging track. Unfortunately for the No. 09 team, with only 18 laps to go in the Zippo 200 at The Glen, an overheating issue proved to be terminal, relegating them to a 32nd finishing position.

RAB Racing and Wallace have been riding high on a string of solid finishes this summer and the team looked towards The Glen as another opportunity to prove what the young team is made of. Wallace powered the No. 09 Upstate New York Toyota Dealers Toyota Camry to an 18th place starting position in qualifying after a successful practice session on Saturday.

Wallace held his position around 20th throughout much of the day, praising his car’s speed and handling. But the good luck wouldn’t last and the car began to overheat around Lap 60. The call was made to remain on the track in an attempt to nurse it until the end of the race. The team eventually had to bring the car behind the wall and discovered that the damage was irreversible.

RAB Racing and Wallace are optimistic about their upcoming races. Wallace remains at 7th in the driver points standings and sits first on the list of most laps completed this season (99.11 %). The No. 09, owned by Robby Benton, is currently 13th in the NNS owner point standings.

We will head further north this weekend as the NASCAR Nationwide Series travels to Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Saturday, August 21st. The No. 09 team will tough it out for over 200 miles in the NAPA Auto Parts 200. Live coverage begins at 2:30PM EST on ESPN and 2:00PM EST on MRN.

Pulling Out All the Stops… The second half of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season offers a second stop at many of the tracks from earlier in the year. This week, Kenny Wallace will return to Iowa Speedway where he recorded his 500th NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) career-start earlier in May and a career-best finish of sixth at the track owned by his older brother and NASCAR Champion, Rusty Wallace. On Saturday night, Wallace and RAB Racing with Brack Maggard will get their second opportunity to pull out all the stops to help Wallace find victory lane at the .875-mile family-owned, tri-oval track.

Keeping Tabs… When a 12th-place finish feels like a loss, you know it must have been a good month. Last weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, RAB Racing scored a fifth top-12 finish in as many weeks. Hoping to close out the month of July with a string of top-10 finishes, the team left disappointed with the finish. Returning to the site of a sixth-place finish in the spring, Wallace and RAB Racing expect a rebound from last week and another hearty finish in the No. 09 American Ethanol/Iowa Corn Toyota Camry. In 21 NNS events this season, RAB Racing has notched nine top-10 finishes. Wallace, a veteran in the sport, is currently seventh in the 2011 Nationwide Series driver point standings.

Iowa Speedway Details…

· Saturday night Wallace will make his fourth NNS start at Iowa Speedway.

· Wallace, who made his 500th Nationwide Series career-start in May at Iowa, will take the green flag this time for the 510th time.

· In three previous events, Wallace has an average finish of 11.3 along with two top-10’s.

· RAB Racing has competed in three events at Iowa Speedway with two different drivers. John Wes Townley piloted the No. 09 twice before Wallace joined RAB Racing as full-time driver in 2011.

Welcome Back… American Ethanol returns as primary sponsor of the No. 09 RAB Racing Toyota Camry. American Ethanol made its debut on the RAB Racing machine in April 2011 at Texas Motor Speedway. American Ethanol’s profile will be front and center and seen by millions of fans as American Ethanol helps take NASCAR’s environmental commitment to the next level. The efforts of NASCAR and American Ethanol are projected to expose 80 million people to the benefits of ethanol and link millions of American farmers with the sport of NASCAR. In addition to American Ethanol, Iowa Corn will be on the No. 09 Camry as an additional partner.

Living for the “Chase”… RAB Racing will stay at the Chase Suite Hotel West Des Moines in Clive, Iowa, this weekend while competing at Iowa Speedway. Conveniently located in the heart of West Des Moines, the Chase Suite Hotel is the ideal destination for West Des Moines business or leisure travelers. The hotel is situated in Clive just miles from the Des Moines International Airport, Jordan Creek Town Center, Valley West Mall, Clive Water Park, Adventure Land, Science Center, and plenty of golf courses. The Chase Suite Hotel Des Moines is quickly becoming the preferred hotel choice. With oversize suites, well-maintained interiors, and pristine grounds, the Chase Suite Hotel provides a unique experience reflecting the local character and a great value.
The “fans” have spoken… Wallace will drive the No. 09 Toyota Camry supported by fans from around the world in October’s Nationwide Series event at Charlotte Motor Speedway. For $20, fans can get their name on Wallace’s No. 09 RAB Racing Toyota Camry and receive a postcard. In addition to fan support, the University of Northwestern Ohio will be featured on the hood for the memorable event. (August 1, 2011) – A 12th-place finish in last Saturday night’s 30th Annual Kroger 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway (LOR) capped off a month-long stretch of solid performances as veteran driver Kenny Wallace captured his fifth NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) finish inside the top-12 to close out the month of July. As a result, Wallace, who is driving the No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Toyota Camry for RAB Racing with Brack Maggard, successfully narrowed the point’s gap between himself and fifth-place in the 2011 Nationwide Series driver point standings.

In a summer full of high temperatures and radiating heat, Wallace and the RAB Racing team made their first and only trip of the season to the newly-minted Lucas Oil Raceway, formerly known as Indianapolis Raceway Park. During a “one-day” show in Indianapolis, Ind., Wallace participated in two practice sessions Saturday morning before entering qualifying later in the day. Posting speeds fast-enough to earn the 13th and 17th positions, respectively, during practice, Wallace was able to dig a little deeper during qualifying to pick up the 11th spot on the starting grid for the night’s event.

Taking the green flag in front of over 35,000 fans, Wallace started just outside of the top-10 but dropped two positions to 13th by lap 30. When the first caution waved on lap 49 for debris on the front stretch, Wallace was scored 16th. By lap 60, Wallace had improved to 14th but had dropped to 19th by the time the second caution flew at lap 115. Restarting 19th on lap 120, Wallace worked to stay ahead of the race leader until the third caution of the night brought relief from the heat and gave Wallace and crew chief Scott Zipadelli a chance to discuss changes on the No. 09 Federated Auto Parts Camry while the field was forced to wait out red flag conditions to clear the track.

Racing resumed on lap 183, but after only seven laps of green flag conditions, the fourth caution flag waved. Wallace, who was scored 16th one lap down to the race leader, picked up the Aaron’s Lucky Dog award, improving the No. 09 team to the tail end of the lead lap. With less than 10 laps remaining on the restart, the field would succumb to the fifth and final caution of the night on lap 200 before entering a green-white-checker finish. At the end of 204 laps of racing, Wallace was scored in the 12th-position, rounding out the month of July with four top-10 finishes and a continued hold on the seventh position in the driver point standings.

On Saturday, August 6th, Wallace returns to Iowa Speedway where he celebrated his 500th career-start in the Nationwide Series with a sixth-place finish last May. Live coverage of the U.S. Cellular 250 presented by the Enlist Weed Control System at Iowa Speedway begins at 7:30PM EST on ESPN and on MRN at 7:00PM EST.

(June 27, 2011) – Kenny Wallace and RAB Racing with Brack Maggard saw a promising day quickly change directions when mechanical issues relegated Wallace to the garage after racing his way in to the top-10 during the opening laps of the Bucyrus 200 at Road America. Wallace, who made his second start in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) event at the 4.048-mile Wisconsin track, went on to finish the extended green-white-checker race 28th eight laps down.

Returning to Road America for the second year after the inaugural Bucyrus 200 in 2010, Wallace put down practice speeds fast enough for 17th and 18th, respectively, in the two scheduled practices on Friday. On Saturday afternoon prior to the start of the race, Wallace picked up the 16th starting position to begin the 200-mile event.

Within 10 laps of the green flag waving, Wallace had picked up four spots to 12th. Continuing to improve positions, Wallace moved up to seventh and was running solidly inside the top-10 by lap 20. The torrid pace would not last, however, as the No. 09 suffered mechanical issues that forced Wallace to make multiple trips down pit road and eventually to spend time in the garage. Wallace was able to get back on track later and finish the race eight laps down in the 28th position.

Nearing the half-way point in the Nationwide Series season, Wallace remains in the seventh position in the driver point standings for the seventh week in a row. The No. 09, owned by Robby Benton, is currently 15th in the NNS owner point standings. On Friday night, the Nationwide Series returns to Daytona International Speedway for the Subway Jalapeno 250 under the lights with coverage beginning at 7:30PM EST on ESPN and MRN.

(May 2, 2011) – Kenny Wallace narrowly missed earning his first top-five finish of the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series season in Friday night’s Bubba Burger 250 at Richmond International Raceway after a late race miscommunication resulted in a penalty for pitting too early in the No. 09 American Ethanol Toyota. A three-time NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) winner at the famed Virginia short-track, Wallace and the RAB Racing with Brack Maggard team took the 13th position after running in the top-five for the majority of the 250-lap event.

Returning to one of his favorite tracks on the NASCAR circuit, Wallace had a good feeling about the weekend and about the solid performances he has been having with his RAB Racing team. Wallace, posted speeds quick enough for ninth during the only scheduled NNS practice session Friday morning. When qualifying concluded Friday afternoon, Wallace climbed two spots to seventh on the speed charts to earn his best starting position of the 2011 season.

Sporting the black and green American Ethanol paint scheme for the second time this season, Wallace and the RAB Racing team improved five positions over the opening 60 laps to the second position. By lap 150, Wallace had dropped back to the sixth position after the race saw a stretch of green flag racing. With 50 laps remaining in the race and only one caution, pit strategy and fuel mileage became focal points for the RAB Racing team.

When the second caution of the night came out in the final five laps, Wallace was scored one lap down in the sixth position. Choosing to pit to for tires, the team brought the No. 09 Toyota down pit road with the lap leaders instead of with the lap-down cars. The pit road miscommunication ultimately resulted in a penalty for the No. 09, which forced Wallace to drop to the tail-end of the cars also one lap down. Wallace restarted with two laps to go, taking the 13th position and earning the team its fifth top-15 finish in nine events.

From one southern track to the next, Wallace and the RAB Racing team will attempt to tame another tough track as the Nationwide Series travels south for the Royal Purple 200 at Darlington Raceway. Live Nationwide Series coverage begins Friday, May 6th, at 7:30 PM EST on ESPN2.

(April 25, 2011) – RAB Racing with Brack Maggard and Kenny Wallace found their rhythm in “Music City” last weekend as the team started and finished inside the top-12 as Wallace piloted the No. 09 TRX Alliance Toyota Camry to a 12th place finish in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Nashville 300 held at Nashville Superspeedway last weekend.

Heading into the eighth event on the Nationwide Series schedule, Wallace and the RAB Racing team were focused on having a solid run. Wallace posted speeds fast enough for two top-20 positions in both of the scheduled NNS practices on Friday at the 1.333 D-shaped oval track. After the qualifying session was complete on Saturday morning prior to the afternoon event, Wallace picked up several spots from practice, laying down laps quick enough to earn the 11th spot on the starting grid.

Taking the green flag from just outside of the top-10 for the 300-mile event, Wallace held his position inside the top-15 for the first half of the race. Wallace lost a lap midway through the race, but quickly regained a position on the lead lap by earning the “Lucky Dog Award” on the lap 151 restart after the fourth of six race cautions throughout the race.

Running solidly inside the top-14 during the closing laps, Wallace made two late race passes before the checkered flag to secure the 12th finishing spot. The finish marks the sixth time Wallace and RAB Racing have brought home a finish inside the top-20 during the 2011 Nationwide Series season. Wallace currently resides ninth in the NNS driver point standings.

Beginning a string of east coast races, Wallace and RAB Racing will next join the NASCAR Nationwide Series for short-track racing at Richmond International Speedway on Friday, April 29, 2011, for the Bubba Burgers 250. Live event coverage will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST on SPEED and broadcasted on MRN beginning at 7:15 p.m. EST.

John Wes Townley

John Wes Townley is no longer with RAB Racing, but don’t ask his former team owner Robby Benton why.

Benton has no idea, saying he was “baffled” by a sudden turn of events that led to Townley’s departure from the team. The future of the Zaxby’s-sponsored driver in NASCAR is unknown.

“I don’t have any explanation or reason why John Wes is not still in our car,” Benton said Saturday at Dover. “We had an agreement to run the rest of the year, and they decided for whatever reason to not honor that agreement.”

Townley was with the team for a test day at Richmond two weeks ago and planned to run the Richmond Nationwide Series race the following night.

Because the son of Zaxby’s co-founder Tony Townley is also taking college courses near the family’s Georgia home, John Wes returned to Georgia that evening to participate in a night class.

The expectation was that Townley would return the following day and drive in the Richmond race. Instead, Benton received a call from Tony Townley at 5:30 a.m. the next morning saying John Wes was ill and would not be able to participate in the race.

Benton tapped Landon Cassill as a replacement, but it was expected Townley would return to the team and finish out the season.

That didn’t happen. Benton was instead notified by an e-mail from Tony Townley that Zaxby’s was discontinuing its relationship with the team, citing poor performance.

John Wes had started the year by leaving RAB for Richard Childress Racing but was kicked out of his ride after only five races. He returned to RAB for another try at driving and ran four races with finishes of 24th, 17th, 27th and 22nd – but didn’t wreck in any of them.

“The goals were get him back in the series, get his reputation and confidence built back up,” Benton said. “He was happy. Everything was good.”

Benton said he’s completely in the dark as to whether Townley plans to return to NASCAR (attempts to reach Townley for this story have not been successful). All of Townley’s seats, helmets and firesuits are still at the RAB Racing shop.

“All communications have been severed,” Benton said. “They won’t return e-mails, texts, phone calls. I have no idea. i haven’t heard any rumors.”
