“I think we had run second six times or something and it went on all of ’89. Every single time we got to the race track on Friday the media would come up to me and ask, ‘When are you gonna win?’ I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know. Hopefully, soon,’” recalled Martin. “For me, because it had been such a struggle in my career, everything else had come so quickly and so easily, and that had been such a long struggle that I really felt like my life was fulfilled, my career goal was fulfilled. It just felt like anything after that was just icing on the cake.”

Martin ended up beating Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip to the finish line that day by 2.98 seconds, leading the final 77 laps in his No. 6 Stroh’s Light Thunderbird.

“I remember standing on top of the spotter’s stand with Steve (Hmiel) and Robin (Pemberton) and we were so happy that we won that race. We had two years of sponsorship from Stroh’s and I was in the process of looking for a new sponsor,” said car owner Jack Roush. “We had Folger’s that we were talking to and the fact that we won that race allowed us to secure that sponsorship, which meant the money that I had to build the team and to buy the shop and all the parts that we needed was going to be supplemented going forward with sponsor money enough to keep it going.”

The rest, as they say, is history. Roush has gone on to win multiple NASCAR championships, but getting to that point required a great deal of research and homework. Instead of just diving in with both feet, Roush did his due diligence and spoke to a number of people before pulling the trigger.

“First of all, I had success with my drag racing but when I started road racing I turned my back on all my drag racers and I found two road racers that had experience. That allowed me to have a jumping off point that was not a beginner’s level, but at a level that was currently going on in the sport at that time,” reasoned Roush. “When I got ready to go NASCAR racing I wanted to do the same thing. I didn’t want to take my drag racers. I didn’t want to take my road racers. I wanted to immerse myself in the sport, accept the culture, find somebody that I could learn from, that I could mentor with, and that would mentor with me and help me be successful.

“So I started my conversation with Bobby Allison. I thought that Bobby Allison was a stand-up guy and he would be my first choice. He was with the Stavola Brothers and he was far enough along in his career that he was thinking about his last 10 years,” continued Roush. “He didn’t want to think about a new owner and put together a program that would take five years to reach prime time. He wanted to keep where he was going, so he recommended that I go talk to Mark Martin and recommended that I talk to Steve Hmiel and Robin Pemberton.”

That’s eventually what Roush did, although he also talked with drivers like Rusty Wallace, Benny Parsons, and Ken Schrader to gauge their interest on driving for him.

“It kept coming back that everyone was well enough situated that they were not inclined to take a chance on a rookie owner that had been a drag racer of all things and been a road racer of not much more standing with some success,” said Roush. “Why would they want to take a chance on somebody from the outside when they were having success that was more predictable with people that were already in the sport?”

So that led Roush to call the trio of Martin, Hmiel and Pemberton, who were all looking for something new to jumpstart their careers at NASCAR’s highest level.

They met at a Holiday Inn near the Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, NC, and even though Roush had scheduled individual interviews an hour apart, all three of them arrived together.

“They had all put their heads together and decided they were going to make an appeal to me, so I went in at nine o’clock and all of them were there at the same time. They made a compelling case to me that one of them would be a crew chief, one of them would be a general manager and one of them would be a driver. And I listened to all of that,” said Roush. “We talked for more than two hours and I walked away from that sure that I had found the people that I wanted to be involved with and it was going to work.

“As I was getting back on the airplane I was thinking about our conversation and it dawned on me that nobody ever asked me how much they could be paid for this or what their personal gain would be,” said Roush. “All of the conversation was, ‘How much testing are we gonna do? How many cars are we gonna build? What do you think about the engines you’re building? How many tires are you gonna buy me?’ Given the fact that they were more interested in doing this thing as a group, and being successful with me as a provider, I said it can’t be wrong. So I had conversation days later with all three of them about what they would get paid and what would be enough to satisfy their starting requirements and how we would manage what the remunerations were as time went on.”

Jack Roush celebrates after winning his first NASCAR race

The newly-formed Roush Racing team debuted at Daytona and struggled to a 41st-place finish as an overheating issue sent Martin to the garage after only 19 laps. Things got much better from that point on as Martin posted his first top-10 finish with a sixth-place run at Darlington in the fifth race of the season and ended up second the following week at Bristol. Overall, the team registered three top-five and 10 top-10 performances with its lone pole coming at Dover late in the season.

“I think we were a little disappointed in the performance. I think all of us expected a little bit more than that the first year, but that first year we ran rear-steer cars and we ran setups that probably weren’t giving us the best performance,” analyzed Martin. “It was toward the end of the year before we started getting away from that and started to get a lot better. We went into the next year like a ball of fire and were really, really strong. We were testing everywhere and developing our own setups with front-steer cars. We were on the map big-time, but that first year really took longer than we had hoped to get our feet under us.”

The second year started out in similar fashion as an accident midway through the Daytona 500 left the team with a 33rd-place finish. Most impressive, however, was the way the team qualified as Martin started fifth or better in each of the first 15 races. Winning, however, remained elusive.

“We were qualifying maniacs and sat on six poles the first half of the season, and that led to Darrell Waltrip saying, ‘They can make them fast, but they can’t make them last.’ That was his quote about the young Roush Racing team,” remembered Pemberton. “We took exception to that and after running the first half of that year with one type of chassis, we changed all of our chassis out with new suspensions and improved our finishes by an average of about five. That’s when we started winning races and contending, so we had different milestones in there from our own standpoint, things that only a few of us would ever remember or recall, but gains that we had made along the year.”

All of those gains eventually led to Rockingham, where Martin qualified seventh in the 40-car field and then set sail toward the first of his 35 wins behind the wheel of a Ford – third-most on the all-time list behind Ned Jarrett (43) and Bill Elliott (40). Roush Racing eventually became Roush Fenway Racing and has amassed 125 all-time victories and two driver championships in what is now known as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Rockingham, N.C. – Sept. 7, 2011 – Rockingham Speedway is pleased to announce that Richmond County and the city of Rockingham, N.C., will once again be home to NASCAR-sanctioned racing with the addition of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Good Sam Roadside Assistance 200 on April 15, 2012.

“In 2007, we set a goal to return Rockingham Speedway to its roots,” states Andy Hillenburg, president of Rockingham Speedway. “The introduction of the truck series to Rockingham Speedway is representative of years of hard work and the support of the county, city and state government officials, who understood the positive economic impact a NASCAR-sanctioned race could offer to the Piedmont region. We are very excited about this news and know our supporters are just as proud to have Rockingham’s national racing roots become a reality once again.”

Good Sam Club, the world’s largest RV owners’ organization will serve as the title sponsor of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Rockingham Speedway, while Cheerwine, legendary soft drink of the south will serve as presenting sponsor.

“We are thrilled about the return of NASCAR racing at Rockingham Speedway and we’re even more excited to have a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event on the schedule for 2012,” said Marcus Lemonis, chairman and CEO of Camping World & Good Sam. “The Rock has a rich tradition of hosting tough racing and thrilling finishes, and we expect the same to hold true next April. We look forward to being a part of next year’s race and exposing those avid fans to the Good Sam RV products and services.”

Rockingham Speedway, affectionately known as “The Rock,” will begin safety improvements to its race track this fall. One improvement will include the installation of a Steel and Foam Energy Reduction barrier, known as the SAFER barrier system, which is a required feature for all top three tier NASCAR-sanctioned race tracks to help improve driver safety. Additional upgrades will be made to the track’s scoring system and pit road, as well as other aesthetic improvements.

“NASCAR is looking forward to returning to Rockingham Speedway with a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event in 2012,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR senior vice-president for Racing Operations. “The fans and community have shown strong support and the track is making significant improvements to its facility. We appreciate all the hard work by Andy Hillenburg and his staff to get to this point. It should be a fun event.”

(May 10, 2011) – The big story coming out of last year’s Carolina 200 race weekend at Rockingham Speedway was 14-year-old Chase Elliott and his dominance of the Sunoco National Tour race.

While his USAR Pro Cup outing that weekend at the Rock was slightly less successful, it became apparent to anyone watching that the young Chase had learned a thing or two about wheeling a race car from his dad, 1988 NASCAR Cup Champion Bill Elliott.

Among the folks watching was NASCAR owner Rick Hendrick, the possessor of 10 Cup Championships, who signed Chase to a driver development deal earlier this year, which has led to a jam-packed race schedule for the 15-year-old in 2011. A schedule that includes a return to Rockingham Speedway for the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service in a USAR Pro Cup car.

“Chase is an amazing talent,” said Rockingham Speedway President Andy Hillenburg. “What he did in that Sunoco race last year was pretty remarkable. Not only was he incredibly fast, but his times in that race were incredibly consistent.

“It’ll be interesting to see how much better this kid has gotten in the last year.”

“We feel like we are a little bit better prepared for the Pro Cup deal than we were last year,” said Bill Elliott. “The Rockingham race was Chase’s first race in the series. Right now it’s about getting all the right parts and pieces in place under him. This should be a good race for Chase.”

“Rockingham is one of my favorite race tracks that I’ve raced on so far,” said Chase. “It was the first bigger track that I raced on and with it being an historic track – one that dad has so much success at –I am excited to be coming back.

“I really think i have learned a lot since last year. We ran a lot of Pro Cup races and have run the K&N Series this year. We now have a notebook full of information that we can fall back on.”

Racing action gets underway on May 12 with a practice for the cars of the UARA and USAR Pro Cup Series. General admission to the grandstands is free on Thursday. Friday, May 13 is pole day for USAR and UARA with fans admitted to the grandstands for $5. The Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service gets underway Saturday, May 14 with the UARA Late Models rolling off at 12 noon to be followed by the USAR 150-miler. Tickets, starting at $20 in advance, and suite packages are still available.

To order tickets for the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service, contact the Rockingham Speedway at (910) 205-8800 or visit our website at www.rockinghamspeedway.com.

Speedway.

The finish was good enough to secure the ARCA Racing Series championship title by 20 points over Craig Goess Jr., who finished right behind the No. 60 Tequesta Road and Bridge of Florida / Jones Group International Toyota Camry in fifth.

Sheltra, the 24-year old rising star, quickly made his march to the front and took control of the field on lap 61 to collect five bonus points. Sheltra would then re-inherit the lead on lap 87, and led until the final restart of the day when a tight handling machine developed and dropped the Indiantown, Florida native in the race rundown.

Sheltra though was determined to crown his Jon Wolfe-led team with the ARCA Racing Series championship, and held off the No. 81 of Goess over the final five circuits to claim his 12th top-five finish of the year and his 17th top-10 overall (both were 2010 ARCA Racing Series highs).

“There are so many people to thank,” said a jubilant Sheltra. “I cannot begin to thank my mom and dad and everyone affiliated with the Sheltra Motorsports team for the great blessing we received today. The guys did an outstanding job and gave me a great racecar. I cannot thank them enough for all of their flawless efforts this season. We’ve been going for this for four years now and this is what it’s all about. I want to thank all of our marketing partners for their support this year; we could not have done it without them. We did it; we are the 2010 ARCA Racing Series champions!”

“Time to celebrate,” said Sheltra walking out of the Chris Economaki Media Center at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway.

Unofficially, Goess finished second in the championship standings with Hessert third, nine-time ARCA champion Frank Kimmel fourth and Justin Marks rounding out the top-five.

A full American 200 presented by Black’s Tire & Auto Service post-race report is forthcoming.

Exiting Rockingham, Sheltra has 87 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards starts to his credit with three career victories at Salem (Ind.) Speedway (April 2009), the Illinois State Fairgrounds (August 2010) and Chicagoland Speedway (August 2010). During his ARCA tenure, Sheltra has accumulated 22 top-fives and posted 39 top-10 finishes. A second place qualifying effort at Chicagoland Speedway (August 2010) is Sheltra’s best time trials effort to date. He has controlled the ARCA field 11 times for 350 laps.

Steve Park’s last NASCAR Cup victory is one of the most memorable moments in NASCAR history.

Driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc., Park won at North Carolina Speedway one week following the death of his boss, Dale Earnhardt, on the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. Park edged Bobby Labonte for the emotional win in the Dura Lube 400.

The 1-mile track, now known as Rockingham Speedway, no longer plays host to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but the track owned by Andy Hillenburg still hosts other stock-car events.

Park makes his return to the track for the Oct. 9 running of the ARCA Racing Series American 200.

Also scheduled to race in the American 200 is NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Ricky Carmichael. The 30-year-old is best known for his successful motocross career. Rockingham will mark Carmichael’s fifth ARCA Series start of the year, with a best finish of seventh in the season-opener at Daytona.

When he was only eight years old, Joey Gase began racing go-karts in his home state of Iowa. Each season the youngster from Cedar Rapids progressed up the racing ladder, hoping one day to reach one of NASCAR’S top-three national touring series.

This Sunday, the seventeen-year will make another step in that journey when he gets behind the wheel of a NASCAR K&N Pro Series racecar at the Iowa Speedway in the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West Challenge. Joey will also get to have some fun and help raise money along the way.

2010 is the fourth annual combination race between the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West; The top step in NASCAR’s developmental ladder to its national touring series and has quickly become a signature event on the K&N Pro Series’ racing calendar with over forty cars expected to be in attendance.

Veteran Butch Miller and the SS Green Light team will field the No. 08 ASI Limited Chevy in the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West Challenge in collaboration with Spraker Racing Enterprises. Currently the No. 08 car sits 12th in the NKNPS points standings after the first two races of the season.

Gase and the team shook down the No. 08 at Caraway Speedway on May 12th in preparation for this weekend, “I really like how well Joey listens,” explained Miller. “He did a nice job adapting to the heavier car, I think we will be very competitive once we get out to Iowa, we have quite a few notes and a couple different set-ups to work with.”

Last weekend Gase took a hard hit when a suspension piece broke at the Rockingham Speedway in a Sunoco National Tour race. Gase is sore, but nothing would keep him from racing in front of the hometown fans. “I was pretty sore for a couple days. I hit my elbow and that swelled up a bit, but it’s doing better. I’m feeling fine and ready to go.”

The 2009 late model champion at Hawkeye Downs speedway is excited to be able to race in front of his hometown fans, “I’ve run at Newton four times in a late model and I’m looking forward to the race. I hope that experience helps me against some of the other guys who have not run there as much. We’ll have quite a few family and fans pulling for us in the stands. I think that will be cool.”

Joey Logano (2007), Brian Ickler (2008) and Kyle Busch (2009) have won the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West Challenge and Gase would love to add his name to the impressive list. “Winning would be nice, but I need to get laps and experience. If we take care of our car, we’ll be alright, most important is to get a solid finish.”

Joey will join five other NASCAR K&N Pros Series East drivers in the NASCAR Day Bowling Challenge on Friday, May 21. The event, which will pit fans, media and the top drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, will take place at the newly opened Bass Pro Shops in Altoona, Iowa.

The NASCAR Day Bowling Challenge will run from 7-9 p.m. There is no charge for admission and is a perfect opportunity for fans to meet the drivers up close prior to the running of the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200. NASCAR Day is celebrating its sixth year. Annually celebrated on the third Friday in May, NASCAR Day is a charitable celebration of the NASCAR spirit that enables fans and partners to join together to make a difference in the lives of children. NASCAR Day encourages fans to make a $5 donation for a collectible lapel pin, which in turn will support programs that help children live happier, healthier lives.

The green flag for the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 is set to fall Sunday at 3:00 central.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (May 7, 2010) – The USARacing Pro Cup Series has made two stops at the Rockingham Speedway.

Clay Rogers has found his way to victory lane in both those races. But it has been a year of changes for the Mooresville, N.C. racer as he finds himself with a new team for 2010. In the offseason, Rogers moved from the JCR3 team, with whom he won two Pro Cup championships, to the Lamb and Robinson Motorsports No. 16 USG Sheetrock Ford team.

Depsite the new team, the 2006 and 2009 champion likes his chances at Rockingham for the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service and for the 2010 season.

“We have melded together the way we do things,” Rogers said. “It didn’t take long for them to figure me out and for me to figure them out. The cars have been fast. We really haven’t skipped a beat.”

Three races into the season and the results back up that statement, with the only blemish being a 16th place finish at Hickory Speedway last week when a blown engine ended a dominating run with 13 laps to go. He started the season with a win at Gresham Motorsports Park and a fourth-place finish at New Smyrna. He comes into Rockingham with boatloads of optimism sitting second in points; trailing leader Caleb Holman by 20 points.

“I made my first (NASCAR) Nationwide Series start at Rockingham and learned a lot about what not to do,” Rogers said. “The key here is to keep the car from being so loose. Tires are always and issue here but the Pro Cup BFGoodrich tire is great here. It doesn’t fall off quite as much and leads to some great racing.”

Racing action for the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service weekend gets underway on Thursday, May 13 with practice and qualifying for the Friday, May 14 running of the Sonoco National Tour cars. Practice and qualifying for the UARA Late Model Series and the USARacing take to the track beginning at 9:30 on Friday, May 14. The Sonoco National Tour cars will take to the track for their 100-lap tilt at 4:30 on May 14. The UARA portion of the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service takes the green flag on Saturday, May 15 at 11 am with the USARacing Pro Cup to follow at approximately 1 pm.

For more information on the Carolina 200 presented by Black’s Tire and Auto Service or other events upcoming at the track, contact Rockingham Speedway at (910) 205-8800 or visit our website at www.rockinghamspeedway.com. Tickets are available for the May 14, 2010 running of the ASA Late Model race and the May 15, 2010 Carolina 200 USAR Pro Cup/ UARA double header – $20.00 in advance and $25.00 the day of the event.

Superspeedway.

Sheltra, an Indiantown, Florida native has been named as a pre-race favorite for the fifth race of the season and for good reason. In the season opener in February, Sheltra mastered a stout fifth place finish at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Despite not walking away with a win, Sheltra reels in the success he conquered at Daytona and feels that he can improve at Talladega with his second career victory in his 72nd career ARCA start.

“The name Talladega says it all,” says Sheltra, who currently sits third in the championship standings, just 70 points from the lead. “For the past couple years, we have shown that Sheltra Motorsports has a successful superspeedway program and we look to continue that presence on Friday.”

Armed with the same No. 60 Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge Charger that the 23-year old competed with at Daytona, Sheltra knows that a car good is one of the keys to superspeedway dominance.

Patrick Sheltra

“This has been a good car for us,” sounded Sheltra. “We raced it here at Talladega last year before we had motor issues. We picked up the pieces and went to Daytona this year and were extremely fast. We feel that we’re going to be in the same position if not a little better than we were in Daytona when the race rolls around. I’m just pumped.”

He added, “Jon (Wolfe, crew chief) and the boys have been working extremely hard since the Talladega test last month to make this car even better than it was in Daytona, so their enthusiasm has me looking forward to hopefully leading the pack on Friday.”

Stepping up their associate marketing partnership role from last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, Cincinnati, Ohio based Buffalo Wings & Rings (BWR) will return as the primary marketing partner for Sheltra’s fourth career ARCA start at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

Known for its “Great Food; No Bull!” campaign, Buffalo Wings & Rings (BWR) is the fastest-growing privately owned franchised chain of restaurants in the nation serving Buffalo-style chicken wings, onion rings, burgers, gyros, wraps and salads. And the only wing establishment in the country with a unique saucing system, customers of BWR get to choose from 45 different sauce combinations. Buffalo Wings & Rings was ranked the No. 1 fastest growing restaurant chain nationwide in the July 2008 issue of Restaurant Business, and ranked in the top 500 franchises in the January 2009 issue of Entrepreneur.

“Our goal is to take Buffalo Wings & Rings to victory lane on Friday at Talladega,” said Sheltra, whose best finish at Talladega is a fifth in 2008. “It’s one of their favorite tracks. BWR and their customers love the intensity, the close racing and the excitement the ARCA Racing Series brings to the track. I don’t plan to disappoint them.”

In addition to the ARCA Racing Series event on Friday, Sheltra will also make his fifth career NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) debut on Saturday (April 24) behind the wheel of the No. 09 Ford Fusion for RAB Racing and former ARCA car owner and driver Robby Benton. Sheltra has never competed in a NASCAR sanctioned event at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

“I’ve always had the utmost respect for Robby Benton and his organization in the NASCAR Nationwide Series,” sounded Sheltra. “I’m honored and humbled at the opportunity to drive for the team at Talladega. Our expectations are high, but there is no doubt that with a little luck we can accomplish our mission.”

Entering Talladega, Sheltra has 71 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards starts to his credit with one career victory at Salem Speedway (April 2009).

Patrick Sheltra

JUSTIN, Texas (April 18, 2010) – - ARCA Racing Series (ARS) veteran Patrick Sheltra endured a busy Rattlesnake 150 Friday evening which consisted of his No. 60 Recycling Services-Buffalo Wings & Rings Toyota Camry quite possibly passing more cars than anyone other competitor at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS). Still, the Indiantown, Florida native was able to rally back from an early race altercation and post his fourth consecutive top-10 finish this season with a seventh place outing in the fourth race of the 2010 season.

Sheltra and his Jon Wolfe led Sheltra Motorsports team returned to the 1.5-mile speedway on the heels of a productive test last month. The Mooresville, North Carolina team fine tuned their Toyota Camry in hopes of sending Sheltra to victory lane for the first time on a speedway. Early on, the chances seemed very likely.

In practice on Thursday afternoon, Sheltra quickly posted a lap among the top-10 fastest. The team continued to improve the handling of their Grace Sheltra owned automobile and by the conclusion of practice had rocketed their machine to fifth fastest overall. Electrified with the results from practice, Sheltra was itching to qualify with the hope of nailing his first ever ARCA pole.

Sheltra’s dreams would be hampered when Mother Nature rolled in and attacked Texas Motor Speedway with a downpour that would force ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards officials to cancel Menards pole qualifying presented by Ansell which meant Sheltra would make his TMS debut from the ninth position, as the field was set according to last year’s (2009) ARCA owner points.

“I am extremely disappointed that we weren’t able to qualify,” said Sheltra, a four-year ARCA pro. “Jon (Wolfe) and the boys gave me a hot rod. This Toyota moves and we were not showing everything we had in practice. I really thought we had a shot at the pole. Guess we’ll never know now. We just need to turn our focus now towards the race.”

At the start of the Rattlesnake 150, Sheltra wasted no time moving the field. By the completion of lap one, Sheltra was able to move past Tim George Jr., and Bryan Silas before being halted by an early caution.

On the restart, Sheltra continued to move forward and found himself approaching the top-five when on lap 13 the team’s day took a dramatic turn. Ahead of Sheltra, the No. 25 of Mikey Kile and the No. 16 of Joey Coulter were battling side-by-side. Kile’s Venturini Motorsports machine broke loose and slid into the rear of Coulter’s No. 16. The two cars spun directly in front of Sheltra with the 23-year old getting hard on the binders only to be plowed from behind by Steve Arpin.

After spinning, Sheltra’s Toyota was the first to leave the scene of the accident with minimal damage to his green and orange machine. The damage wasn’t massive but happened to be in the vicinity of the most critical areas of a racecar. Quick work by the Sheltra Motorsports team kept the No. 60 on the lead lap but with Sheltra marred deep in the field.

Back to racing, Sheltra quickly began making work of the slower vehicles and moved comfortably back into the top-15 before the yellow flag waived again approaching halfway. The team brought their driver back down pit road for further damage control and a chassis adjustment to help Sheltra negotiate a tight-handling racecar which was the repercussion of the damage to his fenders.

Sheltra roared from the back to the front once again and found himself hovering comfortably inside the top-10 when 15 laps from the finish – Sheltra keyed his microphone and notified his team that his car had gone extremely bad loose. “Something’s wrong boys,” he said. Sheltra felt like he had a tire going down and was ready to make an unscheduled stop on pit road when thankfully the yellow waived for the stalled machine of Ricky Carmichael on the racetrack.

The team opted not to take any chances and bring their pilot back down the pit lane change four tires and repair the back bumper which had broken loose from the incident earlier in the race. Wolfe informed his driver that he did not have a tire going down and the Hoosier tires they replaced on his automobile were 20-lap scuffs.

Sitting 16th on the restart – Sheltra lived up to his nickname “Mr. Showtime” and began slicing and dicing his way through the ARCA field and found himself back in the top-10 in the eighth position passing fellow Floridian Bryan Silas inside the race’s final 10 circuits. It appeared Sheltra was prepared to settle for eighth but the yellow waived once again which would throw the race into overtime and allow Sheltra another opportunity to pick up a few more positions.

On the green-white-checkered attempt, Sheltra quickly disposed of the No. 29 of Chad Finley and was preparing to make the move on nine-time ARCA champion Frank Kimmel and the No. 36 of Robb Brent when the No. 44 of Kimmel threw a block at Sheltra forcing him to back out of the gas and lose the momentum he had exiting turns one and two.

The momentum stall would force Sheltra to hunker down and bring his car home in the seventh position continuing a great start to the 2010 ARCA Racing Series season for the Sheltra Motorsports operation.

“It was a challenging day,” said Sheltra. “We had a car that I think was capable of winning the race. She was bad fast. We had the wreck avoided with Joey (Coulter) but then we were hit from behind and I made light contact with Mikey (Kile) and it really hurt the aerodynamics of our car. From there, we tried to adjust the car and deal with the cards we were handed. It’s disappointing but we’re relieved to leave Texas with a top-10 finish. We’ll see if we can’t seal the deal at Talladega.”

The Friday night effort for Sheltra marked the first time that he has finished inside the top-10 for four consecutive ARCA events which helped the avid dirt late model competitor comfortably maintain his third place position in the ARCA Racing Series championship standings trailing close friend Justin Marks by 60 points and 70 credits behind Texas winner and current points leader Steve Arpin.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards is a stop in Alabama at the Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway for the running of the Talladega ARCA 250. The 94-lap / 250 mile event is set for Friday, April 23 at 4:00 p.m. CST., with live coverage on SPEED. Sheltra will make his fourth career start at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

Leaving Texas, Sheltra has 71 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards starts to his credit with one career victory at Salem Speedway (April 2009). During his ARCA tenure, Sheltra has accumulated 12 top-fives and posted 26 top-10 finishes. A third place qualifying effort at Rockingham Speedway (April 2009) is Sheltra’s best time trials efforts to date. He has controlled the ARCA field six times for 148 laps.

Buescher will drive the No. 17 for Roulo Bros. Racing at eight races this year. Those eight races include both events at Salem, Toledo and the events at Mansfield, Iowa, New Jersey and Rockingham Speedway.

Buescher made his first ARCA start last season at Salem Speedway, where he qualified ninth and finished fourth. That jump started a successful 2009 season for the youngster from Prosper, Texas. At the fall race at Salem Buescher became the youngest pole winner in the 57 year history of the ARCA Series by capturing the pole position. In seven starts in 2009 with Roulo Bros. Racing Buescher earned three top-five and five top-10 finishes.

Roush Fenway and Roulo Bros. continue an affiliation that began in 2005. Since that time the Roulo Bros. have fielded entries for drivers such as David Ragan, Erik Darnell among others in the Roush Fenway driver development program.

“We are really appreciative of the support from everyone in the Roush Fenway organization,” said Gary Roulo, Crew Chief and co-owner with his brother Rusty. “It’s great to have an affiliation with one of NASCAR’s premier teams such as Roush Fenway and the Roush Yates engine department.”

The Roulo Bros. team ranks among the top in most all-time active ARCA Series team owner performance stats for wins, poles, laps led and top five-finishes. The team has currently won with seven different drivers in ARCA Series competition.

“I am really looking forward to getting the season started this weekend at Salem” commented Buescher. “My first ARCA start came here last April where we qualified ninth and finished fourth. It is a tough race track, but I learned to really love it.”

The No. 17 Roulo Bros. Ford Fusion entry for this weekend’s Salem event will once again carry the logos for The David Ragan Fan Club and Shriners Hospitals for Children, David Ragan’s official charity.

The winner and their guest will receive two pit passes and allow them to experience the ARCA Racing Series garage first hand before joining the Mooresville, North Carolina based team on the sidelines for the fifth race of the 2010 season.

“We’ve been waiting for this movie to come out for a long time now,” said Sheltra. “It’s exciting to know that we had a small role in it. Our Sheltra Motorsports dirt car is even shown in a scene. The opportunity to promote the movie further and allow the winners of the contest to hang out with us for the ARCA race at Talladega is pretty exciting if you ask me. The exposure from the movie helps us out a little bit too, so it’s a win-win situation.”

Sheltra, the Indiantown, Florida native returns to a superspeedway on the heels of a stunning fifth-place performance in the season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February where the 23-year old pro battled side-by-side with IZOD IndyCar Series star Danica Patrick before beating the No. 7 Godaddy.com Chevrolet Impala to the line in her first stock car race.

“Talladega is so much fun to race at compared to Daytona. Talladega is so smooth that you don’t have to worry about bouncing around every couple seconds. The smoothness of the track allows the competition to be hot and heavy and that’s why the ARCA Racing Series puts on a good show there. We are excited to have Buffalo Wings & Rings back on board for the race, so hopefully we can take them and our guests to victory lane.”

Sheltra has 69 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards starts to his credit with one career victory at Salem Speedway (April 2009). During his ARCA tenure, Sheltra has accumulated 11 top-fives and posted 24 top-10 finishes. A third place qualifying effort at Rockingham Speedway (April 2009) is Sheltra’s best time trials efforts to date. He has controlled the ARCA field five times for 109 laps.

“Puerto Rican driver impressive in first stock car event”

Nashville, TN (March 28, 2010) … Bryan Ortiz finished third in the Southern Salute 200 at the New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday night in his Sunoco National Tour debut. It was the first career stock car race for the 21-year old Puerto Rican driver racing for BD Racing with Sterling Marlin and High Performance Motorsports.

Driving the #40 Organization Consulting Group, Inc. & NovaDerm – Dermaesthetic Center entry, Ortiz qualified 11th at the high-banked half-mile Florida track. By lap ten, Ortiz had moved up to seventh and was working his way through the field. Six laps later, the Puerto Rican raced into the top five and was running third at the 100-lap break. The Sunoco National Tour races 100 laps, takes a ten-minute “intermission”, then races the final 100 laps.

During the ten-minute intermission, the BD Racing with Sterling Marlin and High Performance Motorsports crew changed tires and made minor adjustments to the car. On lap 104, Ortiz spun after contact from another competitor but regained control and began driving his way through the field once again. With 50 laps to go, Ortiz reported to the crew that he had “no grip and was loose on exit”. However, the rookie continued his march to the front and was running second with five laps remaining. The 25 car passed Ortiz for second in the final laps as only three cars finished on the lead lap.

“I want to thank Sterling Marlin and the team for the great car they gave me tonight,” Ortiz commented after 200 competitive laps. “My car was much better on long runs and I could drive my way through the field. The change of tires at the halftime break had a definite effect on my car and it wasn’t as good during the second half. However, I’m pleased with my first stock car race and my first race in the Sunoco National Tour.”

“Bryan (Ortiz) did a great job in his first race,” Marlin added. “He showed that he has a good understanding of what it takes to be successful in this Series. This young man has talent.”

With race winner Sean Bass not eligible for championship points, Ortiz stands second in the Sunoco National Tour points and leads the Rookie-of-the-Year standings after his debut event. Three cars in the Southern Salute 200 had the “old” body style and were not eligible for championship points in this event.

The next race for Ortiz and BD Racing with Sterling Marlin and High Performance Motorsports on the 2010 Sunoco National Tour is scheduled for May 14th at the Rockingham Speedway in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Pre-race Notes and Quotes

Southern Salute 200 – March 27, 2010

New Smyrna Speedway – New Smyrna Beach, FL

Margate, FL native Brian Blum is ready to kick off the 2010 Sunoco National Tour season in his home state at New Smyrna Speedway. The opening event of the 2010 season marks the beginning of a new era in the ASA Late Model Series.

Title sponsorship from Sunoco and brand new body styles for the premier late model series in America have fans and competitors alike buzzing. After gaining valuable experience at some of the most recognizable tracks in the sport, like Rockingham Speedway and Gateway Int’l Raceway, Blum and the #31 Blum Motorsports team are prepared to return to short tracks.

After putting himself in position to score his first ASALMS win on numerous occasions in 2009, Blum is optimistic about his chances to visit victory lane in one the six events held on tracks less than a mile in 2010. Blum is hoping that his past experience at New Smyrna, most recently in January 2009, will propel him to the first Sunoco National Tour win in series history.

QUOTING BRIAN BLUM

(On the changes in 2010 for the Sunoco National Tour): “It’s really exciting as a competitor to see what Sunoco is bringing to the table as well as the changes to the cars this season. Everyone at Blum Motorsports is excited, and I think the fans are going to really enjoy it too. Sunoco is going to be a great partner for ASA, and everyone at Blum Motorsports is excited to be a part of the new Sunoco National Tour.”

(On the new style Sunoco National Tour cars): “They’re definitely a change from the style late models we’re used to running. I think our new Camero body looks great. It’ll be interesting to see how they react at the bigger tracks. It’s something that will be interesting for the drivers to adapt to throughout the year. I think it’s great for the series to have an identity unique to the Sunoco National Series.”

Blum Motorsports is actively seeking sponsorship for the 2010 season, and for more information on Brian Blum visit BrianBlumRacing.com.

International Raceway optimistic but after everything that his Sheltra Motorsports team experienced throughout the weekend, the team was satisfied with their performance in Saturday’s Tire Kingdom 150 presented by ModSpace.

Attention was surrounding the 23-year old Floridian approaching the ARCA Racing Series second event of the season. With the 2.034-mile road course sitting just 15 minutes from his home in Indiantown, the media frenzy was high and even the garage and stands were packed with “Sheltra Nation.”

Armed with the same road course car that Sheltra utilized for the two past seasons at New Jersey Motorsports Park, the Mooresville, North Carolina based team was hoping to keep their early season surge alive.

In practice on Friday, the team led by crew chief Jon Wolfe made several changes to Sheltra’s No. 60 Recycling Services-Sheltra & Son Construction Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS looking for the ideal setup that would put their hometown hero in contention for his second career win on Saturday.

The team’s goals would be sidetracked briefly as Sheltra during practice accidentally missed a gear and over-revved the motor for a quick second. The team would be in lengthy discussions following practice whether or not to change the motor or keep the same one in place. After examining what they could – - the team decided to keep the same motor in but missed the in-line time for pre-qualifying technical inspection which penalized the team by making them start the event from the rear of the field, no matter where they qualified.

The purpose of qualifying was to obtain a respectable pit box on pit road and put the motor through another rigorous test with Sheltra making lefts and rights and shifting through the gears several times. He qualified 12th.

“We’ll make the race exciting,” said Sheltra after qualifying. “The car is fast and the motor doesn’t seem hurt, so we’ll be okay for the race.”

Under gloomy skies, Sheltra and the rest of the field took the green flag shortly after 1:00 p.m. with Mr. Showtime quickly on the move in his black and green Chevrolet.

By the time Sheltra crossed the line completing the first lap he has passed 12 competitors. While continuing to mount an impressive charge through the field – his charge would be stalled when Sheltra made an improper turn on the course which yielded a pass-through penalty.

Despite the setback, Sheltra continued to move back through the field before rain began to fall around the Jupiter, Florida-based track 20 laps into the event. Wolfe would call his driver to pit road when ARCA officials through the yellow flag two laps later to allow the team to switch from Hoosier slicks to Hoosier wets. The pit stop would also allow some time to make some adjustments to prepare to compete in the rain.

Back on track with rain falling, Sheltra would take the green flag in the 19th position, Sheltra was impressive in the rain as he maneuvered the field to as high as seventh before sliding back through the field after some tire wear on his Grace Sheltra owned automobile.

With an impressive green flag run in the rain, Wolfe would bring his driver to pit road under green in the final stages of the event for rear tires and some Sunoco racing fuel. Sheltra would lose a lap under the green flag pit stop as the leaders who were more experienced on a road course in wet conditions would take the ARCA pro from the lead circuit.

The team would not be fazed by the loss of the lead lap status as Sheltra continued to inch up the leader board. Inside the final 10 laps of the event, the rain began to pick up more fiercely forcing ARCA officials to the throw the yellow flag with seven laps to go for the final time. The very next lap the yellow and white flags would be waived together – shortening the race by a mere five circuits.

With no vision from the windshield of his machine, Sheltra relied on his spotters located throughout the track to guide him through the other cars stopped on the racetrack not to mention the constant downpour to cross the finish line 10th, his second consecutive top-10 finish this season.

“We had a good day overall,” said Sheltra. “We started from the back, went to the front and then came from the middle of the pack to the top-10 again. It was a busy day that’s for sure, but we made it through and we’re content with the finish.”

When it comes to racing in the rain, Sheltra was mixed. “The tires did real good in the rain. They wear just like every other tire we race on in the ARCA Racing Series. But, overall they did great and it was nice to know how they would handle if we have to race in the rain at New Jersey later in the year.”

With his second consecutive top-10 finish of the year, Sheltra is only joined by Steve Arpin who has also finished in the top-10 in both events from Daytona International Speedway and Palm Beach International Raceway this season.

With his 24th career top-10 finish in ARCA, Sheltra leaves PBIR unofficially fourth in points, five markers behind Arpin and Robb Brent. Just 35 credits keep Sheltra from the point’s lead retained by Palm Beach winner Justin Marks.

All About Flowers, American Concrete, Buffalo Wings & Rings, CAM 2 Blue Blood Racing Oil, Ferguson Pipe Enterprises, Indiantown Marina, Recycling Services and Sheltra & Son Construction, Inc. joined the team as marketing partners in Saturday’s contest.

Next up for the ARCA Racing Series is a stop at Salem (Ind.) Speedway for the running of the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA 200 on Sunday, April 11 for round three on the 2010 schedule. Sheltra is the defending champion of the event.

Exiting Palm Beach, Sheltra has 69 ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards starts to his credit with one career victory at Salem Speedway (April 2009).

International Raceway this week – but the veteran ARCA racer also has a clear goal for Saturday’s Tire Kingdom 150 presented by ModSpace. Finish the race.

With the ARCA Racing Series switching tactics and mounting a second race in February, Silas is looking forward to racing in his backyard especially after his super finish at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway two weeks ago.

“It’s going to be sweet to have a race near home,” said Silas. “As a team we’re looking forward to keeping our early season success going.”

While Silas admits he is not a road course wiz, he has over the past two years been able to come to terms with the concept thanks to plenty of experience at driving schools and two events at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

“I’m not a road course specialist by any means, but it will be nice to have some hometown support,” sounded Silas. “We always race out of town, so it feels good to finally get to do it in my own backyard not to mention getting to sleep in my own bed the night after the race.”

And because Silas understands that he’s not a road course guy by trade, he has invited some outside help.

“We’ve got a guy coming down from South Carolina to work with me – Matt Mullins. He’s going to help spot for me on the backside of the course with Andy (Hillenburg, car owner) spotting on the other side.”

In addition to the additional help from Mullins at Palm Beach, that’s not all that has changed in the Fast Track Racing camp. Bryant Frazier, who it was announced would be Silas’s crew chief for the 2010 season, left the team after Daytona in favor of an opportunity with Joe Gibbs Racing. “I appreciated the time I had with Bryant,” Silas added. “He is a great guy and I wish him nothing but the best in his new endeavor.”

As one door closes, another one opens as Fast Track Racing welcomes aboard Dennis Conner who brings an impressive resume to Fast Track including a tenure at Hendrick Motorsports and three championship rings in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with Jack Sprague. “I’ve been talking to Dennis a lot. He seems like a very knowledgeable guy. Andy (Hillenburg) is very comfortable with him, so I’m not worried at all,” said Silas.

Silas, after the ninth place finish at Daytona, is currently ninth in points headed to Palm Beach, However, only Patrick Sheltra (currently fifth in points), another Floridian, is the only ARCA regular ahead of Silas in points. With a good, solid top-10 run at Palm Beach, Silas has an opportunity to be leading the points when the checkered flag falls.

“The best case scenario at Palm Beach would obviously be a win,” added Silas. “But, I’m not an experienced road racer. I go into every race now thinking I can win, but realistically, if we could come out with the car in one piece and a top-10 finish, I’d be ecstatic.

“Unlike New Jersey, this track’s hard on brakes. You’re reaching speeds of 150 miles per hour plus and then down to 35, 40 miles per hour for some of these corners. The person who still has his equipment under him at the end is going to win.

“If there’s anything that I learned in the test, it’s that this is a very challenging course. There’s absolutely no runoff. If you spin off here, you’re going to hit something. Attrition is definitely going to play a role.”

Nason, Yeager, Gerson, White & Lioce P.A., American Custom Yachts, Inc., Palm Beach Grading (PBG) and Rockingham Speedway will all sponsor Silas’s Ford Fusion for his 73rd career ARCA start.
