“Chrissy Wallace also looking to place her talents with a team”

JD Motorsports

GAFFNEY, S.C. (January 10, 2012) – Mike Wallace and his No. 01 JD Motorsports Chevrolet team know a few things about this upcoming NASCAR Nationwide Series season.

The first is; – Daytona is coming up really fast, and they’re going to be there. The second is; they’re not sure who is going to be on their car as marketing partners all year.

So, the search for sponsorship is in full swing with Wallace and JD Motorsports to make them more competitive for the NNS schedule. G&K Services is going to be part of the team, just as they were last year.

“We know who some of our partners are going to be this year,” said Wallace. “We just don’t know what capacity they are going to be on the No. 01 Chevrolet. We appreciate everyone who becomes one of our partners.

“Like everyone else, we’re looking to add to our partnerships to help be the best we can at the track each week. We have a great team of people and know we can get the job done. We just need those solid partnerships to get us to that point.”

With 416 starts in the Nationwide Series, Wallace has shown he’s capable of getting the job done. With four trips to Victory Lane and 63 top-10s to his credit, he and the JD Motorsports team backed that up with a pretty good 2011 season.

With 18 top-20 finishes in 34 starts last year, they had a best finish of fifth at Road America. They were consistent qualifiers and come into the 2012 season after Wallace finished 13th in the Driver’s Standings.

Daughter Chrissy searching for place to put here talents

It’s rare when a father-daughter duo is race car drivers. What’s even odder is when they are both searching for help for a solid season.

Chrissy, 23, is coming off a historic year as the only female driver to win the ASA West Regional Championship and an ASA Track Champion, which she did through her efforts at Lebanon (MO) I-44 Speedway. With success like that, it only makes sense the third-generation driver seeks to move up the racing ladder into the NASCAR ranks.

She’s no stranger to NASCAR racing having made NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and Nationwide Series starts in the past. Now, she’s ready to show she can be just as competitive in those ranks as she was in ASA competition. Wallace started the ARCA Series finale at Toledo (OH) Speedway in October and has talked to some teams in that series, as well

“Everyone I talked to on NASCAR teams said to go show I could be a winner,” Chrissy said. “So, I went Late Model racing proved I could win and be a champion. I learned so much about car control, tire management and how to become a better driver last year.

“Now, I’m just looking to put all I learned to use with a NASCAR Truck, Nationwide or an ARCA team. Keeping this momentum going would benefit all of involved with my racing.”

This past Saturday night, January 7, the Wallace racing brothers of Rusty, Mike and Kenny were inducted into the Ozark Area Racers Hall of Fame in Springfield, MO. Kenny and Mike were on hand to receive the induction. Father Russ Wallace was previously inducted in 2004.

Petty: “This isn’t all about Kyle Busch … there is a massive ripple effect. There’s people that pay money to come to this race track to see Kyle Busch sit in that race car.”

Wallace: “I’ve been defending Kyle Busch since 2005 … I can’t defend him anymore.”

Not surprisingly, NASCAR’s parking of Kyle Busch Saturday and Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway dominated the talk in the garage and on NASCAR RaceDay Built by The Home Depot Sunday on SPEED.

SPEED analyst Kyle Petty was quite vocal in his scrutiny of the repercussions that Busch’s parking for his actions in Friday’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Texas have beyond immediate effect on his team and his spot in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings. Kenny Wallace, a fulltime NASCAR Nationwide Series driver and SPEED analyst who religiously has defended Busch over the years, also took the driver to task for his actions.

Following are excerpts from Petty and Wallace’s discussion on NASCAR RaceDay with host John Roberts.

Roberts: What did you think of Busch’s apology letter?

Petty: “This isn’t all about Kyle Busch. I think Kyle got lost in all this. ‘This is all about me.’ This is not all about Kyle Busch. It’s about his family; it’s about NASCAR; it’s about that team; it’s about his sponsors and as important as anything, it’s about these people you see behind me (the fans) and these people that sit in the grandstands and buy these products and buy his souvenirs. There is a massive ripple effect. There’s people that pay money to come to this race track to see Kyle Busch sit in that race car. There’s a company out there- multiple companies – that pay money to bring that race car here. Kyle Busch’s actions spoke louder than his words. I appreciate his apology, but I think Kyle really has to read that apology and think about what that apology means and take those words and turn them into actions. So far this weekend, his actions have spoken a lot louder than his words have.”

Wallace: “I’ve been defending Kyle Busch since 2005. I’m one of his biggest fans. If you’ve ever watched this show, I’m like, ‘Give him a break. He’s a great race car driver.’ Well, I can’t defend him anymore. He’s one of the greatest talents of all time and I get that. That’s why this is so disappointing to me. We’ve been talking this year about how this is a new Kyle Busch. He’s changed. Well, you know what? This is a big step backwards. I’m going to be rooting him on to overcome this. We’ve been waiting for this great race car driver to take control of this sport and be like a Jeff Burton. We’ve been waiting for Kyle Busch to run the garage area. Why? Because he’s an incredible talent. Wouldn’t it be great to have this incredible talent, a great race car driver, match skills inside the garage and say, ‘Hey guys, we can’t be doing that?’ So, this is a big step backwards. I’ll be rooting him on, but I think this one is going to take two, three, four, five years to see if we can get him back to help lead this sport into the next years.”

Roberts: Is the punishment enough?

Petty: “No, I don’t think the punishment is enough. But I thought Carl Edwards should have sat down for three weeks also (after the Atlanta incident with Brad Keselowski). That was Kyle’s (Petty) opinion. That was Kyle’s opinion, not the opinion of this network (SPEED) or any of its affiliates or anyone else. My opinion because I thought that was as blatant an incident as I’d ever seen – coming out of the garage area and wrecking Brad (Keselowski). This incident ranks right there with it. I don’t say it’s any worse than that incident, but I think those are two marks where when NASCAR says, ‘We’ll know it when we see it,’ I think they saw it once and didn’t act on it. I think they acted this time.”

Wallace: “I agree with Kyle (Petty) on this one. I agree the punishment fits the crime. I’m going to go as far as to say there may be more reaction from Joe Gibbs Racing. When does it come the time that the team takes responsibility for the driver? Right now, NASCAR is doing all the ruling. The biggest topic I’ve seen on Twitter is ‘Why is this different than what Carl Edwards did to Brad Keselowski?’ Kyle Busch has been warned. He’s been on probation. He’s been in a lot of trouble and I feel like NASCAR has said he’s out of control; we’ve got to get control of this. Carl Edwards has always been a good guy and has been good for this sport except for that one moment.”

Notes and Quotes:

LoanStar Partners with No. 62 in Fort Worth: Michael Annett’s No. 62 Toyota Camry will proudly sport the LoanStar Title Loans brand this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. A partner with Rusty Wallace Racing since 2008, the LoanStar logo has appeared on the No. 62 and No. 64 entries for select races throughout the last four Nationwide Series seasons. LoanStar’s last race aboard Rusty Wallace Racing’s No. 62 car was at Texas Motor Speedway in November 2010. Annett and his team owner, Rusty Wallace, will sign autographs at the LoanStar Title Loans location at 305 SW Wilshire Blvd. in Burleson, Texas on Thursday, November 3 from 6-7 p.m. CT.

RWR Toyotas Pay Tribute to Russ Wallace: With the passing of Russ Wallace earlier this week, both the No. 62 and No. 66 Rusty Wallace Racing entries will honor him by displaying his name above their driver and passenger side doors for Saturday’s Nationwide Series event at Texas Motor Speedway. Russ molded his children and grandchildren’s careers in the sport of racing, and to honor his legacy the organization will pay tribute through their race cars this weekend.

Racing to Save Lives: After declaring St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® as his charity of choice during the Kansas Speedway race weekend, Annett will again support the hospital on Saturday by donning their logo on his No. 62 Toyota. This week, the St. Jude decal will run in honor of seven-year-old Darcy Cassidy from Meridian, Texas. Darcy suffered with an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor beginning in November 2008. After 31 radiation treatments and four courses of chemotherapy at St. Jude, she is now thriving back at home in Texas where she recently started second grade. Darcy has proudly returned to her interest in rodeo riding where she finished in the top-15 for barrel racing in the 2010 Pro Youth Rodeo Association. To join Annett in donating to St. Jude, please visit www.stjude.org/racingtosavelives.

Rusty Wallace Racing at Texas: In 21 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway, Rusty Wallace Racing entries have earned three top-10 finishes. Rusty Wallace Racing cars have led 30 laps of competition at Texas Motor Speedway and have completed 4,048 of the 4,216 (96 percent) laps contested in those events.

Michael Annett at Texas: Annett has five career Nationwide Series starts on Texas’ 1.5 mile quad-oval. His best finish at Texas Motor Speedway was 11th in his first career start there in April 2009. In his five attempts at Texas Motor Speedway, Annett has led 10 laps and completed 981 of the 1,005 (97.6 percent) laps contested in those events.

Meet Michael: Coinciding with race week in Fort Worth, the No. 62 Pilot Flying J show car and No. 66 5-Hour Energy show car will be on display at the Pilot Travel Centers location off of I-35, Exit 65 (2400 Alliance Gateway, Fort Worth, Texas 76178) Thursday and Friday, November 3 and 4 from 6-10 p.m. CT and Saturday, November 5 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. CT. Annett and his teammate, Steve Wallace, will be on location signing autographs for fans and customers from 1-2 p.m. CT on Friday, November 4.

Michael Annett on this weekend’s event in Texas:

“We’ve got a lot of special things happening for our team this weekend, and most importantly we are running our race cars in honor of Russ Wallace with his name above our doors. Russ was responsible for bringing one of the most legendary families to NASCAR, and it’s a huge honor for me to be able to be a part of the Wallace racing family. Not only driving for Rusty and alongside Steve, but in the Nationwide Series with Kenny and Mike as well.”

“We are excited to add LoanStar Title Loans to our 2011 sponsor line-up for this weekend’s race in Texas. LoanStar has a strong presence in the state of Texas, so we’re looking forward to giving them a strong finish in front of their home state crowd.”

Mike Moore, Vice President LoanStar Title Loans, on partnering with RWR at Texas:

“We are very excited to team with Rusty Wallace Racing again for this weekend’s race in Texas. We’re looking forward to having Rusty and Michael out to our Burleson location on Thursday and seeing Michael on the track in the No. 62 LoanStar car in Saturday’s race.”

The Machines:

Team 62 Primary: RWR-059 - RWR’s No. 62 team most recently earned a 16th place finish at Kansas Speedway with this chassis in October. The team has also competed in this car at Iowa Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Michigan International Speedway in 2011.

5-Hour Energy Team News and Notes

This Week’s 5 Hour Energy Toyota … Steve Wallace will pilot Rusty Wallace Racing chassis RWR-064 in Friday evening’s Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage. Built new for the 2011 season, this Toyota Camry has raced seven times, with a best finish of eighth coming at Iowa Speedway in August. Most recently, Wallace raced this chassis to a 20th-place finish at Dover International Speedway two races ago.

Four to Go … With 30 races of the 2011 season in the record books, Wallace has accumulated two top-five, five top 10 and 14 top-15 finishes, an average starting position of 13.4 and an average finish of 16.1. Wallace has completed 98.1 percent of the laps contested (5,492 of 5,597) thus far.

Get to the Points … Wallace continues to maintain the eighth position in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver point standings. With just four races remaining in the 2011 season, Wallace trails seventh-place driver Kenny Wallace by 27 markers, and holds a one-point advantage over ninth-place contender Brian Scott.

Wallace at Charlotte … In eight NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Wallace has recorded one top-10 finish. His best result at the 1.5-mile oval is seventh, which he posted when the series last raced there in May.

Loop Data Says … According to NASCAR’s loop data statistics, Wallace’s 408 green-flag passes rank him 10th-best among 86 drivers over the course of the past six years who have competed in NASCAR Nationwide Series competition at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Welcome Aboard … 5-Hour Energy Racing welcomes Harris Teeter as a partner for this weekend’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Harris Teeter branding will adorn the TV panel of Wallace’s No. 66 Toyota in Friday evening’s race.

Rusty Wallace Racing at Charlotte … In 35 combined NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Rusty Wallace Racing’s best result came in May 2009 when Brendan Gaughan recorded a runner-up finish. Rusty Wallace Racing entries have earned three top-five and 19 top-10 finishes with five different drivers including Gaughan, Jamie McMurray, Kenny and Steve Wallace. Rusty Wallace, a former driver in NASCAR’s junior division, himself contributed two top-five and three top 10s from 1985-1988.

Rusty Wallace Racing in 2011 … With 30 of 34 races completed thus far in the 2011 season, Rusty Wallace Racing’s three NASCAR Nationwide Series entries have recorded a combined three top-five, 12 top 10 and 30 top-15 finishes. Rusty Wallace Racing Toyotas have completed 12,024 of 12,419 laps attempted, and have been atop the leaderboard for 19 laps with drivers Michael Annett, Jason Bowles, David Reutimann and Steve Wallace.
Supporting the Cause … In honor of Breast Cancer awareness month, Rusty Wallace Racing’s two NASCAR Nationwide Series teams will race with pink roof numbers for the Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday night.

“I enjoy racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It’s great to race at home. We can all sleep in our own beds. I don’t really let myself get too worked up over it, but there is a little more pressure to racing at Charlotte because you’ve got not only your friends and family, but the friends and family of all the crew members too. Charlotte is a track where anything can happen. It’s very temperature sensitive, and it can really change the handling characteristics of the car over the course of the night.” – Steve Wallace on racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway

The Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Auto Parts at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds has existed since 1950 and been run in consecutive years every year since 1954, meaning that Monday’s event will be the 59th over a history that includes winners like Fred Lorenzen, Jack Bowsher, A.J. Foyt, and Rusty Wallace, not to mention recent ARCA stars like Frank Kimmel, Parker Kligerman, and 2010 winner Steve Arpin.

Practice for the 16th race of the 19-event 2011 ARCA Racing Series season will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, with Menards Pole Qualifying presented by Ansell following at 11 a.m. and the 100-lap, 100-mile race going off at 1 p.m. The Southern Illinois 200 is the second of two dirt mile events on this season’s schedule. All times are Central Daylight, and ARCARacing.com will feature live timing and scoring coverage and live audio coverage of all on-track events.

ARCA began its affiliation with the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds and the Southern Illinois 100 in 1983, and the event has taken place on Labor Day for each of the past 10 years, dating back to 2001.

Kimmel, driver of the No. 44 Ansell / Menards Ford and a nine-time ARCA champion, is the all-time win leader at the dirt oval with five victories (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008). The Southern Illinois 100 will be his 60th start since his last win, which came at Salem Speedway in September 2008, only days after his most recent DuQuoin win.

In all, Kimmel has 13 dirt victories – including five at DuQuoin – and finished seventh on the similar Springfield, Ill. mile nine days ago. With a series-high 14 top-10 finishes in 15 races, Kimmel is undoubtedly a driver to watch at DuQuoin.

Only two drivers stand above Kimmel in driver points: Ty Dillon (No. 41 Hemelgarn / CIPT Chevrolet) leads Chris Buescher (No. 17 Reliance Tool / David Ragan Ford) by exactly 400 points, and both have reason to believe a trip to Victory Lane could be in store following a rare Monday afternoon event.

Dillon finished a career-worst 13th at Springfield, but will carry a series-high seven wins and a wealth of dirt racing experience into the event. Buescher, meanwhile, finished eighth at Springfield but has five runner-up finishes this season, including one Friday at Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin. A two-time winner last season, Buescher is still looking for a breakthrough victory in 2011.

Chad McCumbee (No. 1 ModSpace Ford) certainly figures to be a contender, having just won at Springfield. Tom Hessert (No. 52 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet) will enter DuQuoin with second-place finishes in each of his last two dirt starts.

Will Kimmel (No. 68 Messina Wildlife Management / Menards Ford) is the nephew of Frank Kimmel, and he will aim to improve on a sixth-place finish at DuQuoin in 2010 and a fourth-place run at Springfield earlier this month.

Another dirt specialist entered is Kelly Kovski (No. 39 Central Illinois Security / Schluckebier Farms Chevrolet), who finished ninth last season at DuQuoin and sixth at Springfield this year. Kovski is typically the crew chief at Allgaier Motorsports for top-five contender Grant Enfinger (No. 36 Hoosier Tire Midwest / RaceTires.com Dodge), making his entry as a driver even more appealing.

Other notable entries include two-time World of Outlaws Late Model Series champion Josh Richards (No. 25 Joy Mining Machinery Chevrolet), who is often regarded as one of the world’s finest dirt drivers, and Andrew Ranger (No. 53 Van Dyke Baler / Bollegraaf Ford), a road course ace who won at New Jersey Motorsports Park earlier this season.

Thirty-five cars are currently entered.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards features 19 events at 16 tracks on its 2011 schedule. The series has crowned an ARCA national champion each year since its inaugural season in 1953, and has toured over 200 race tracks in 28 states since its inception. The series tests the abilities of drivers and race teams over the most diverse schedule of stock car racing events in the world, annually visiting tracks ranging from 0.4 mile to 2.66 miles in length, on both paved and dirt surfaces as well as a left- and right-turn road course.

Founded by John Marcum in 1953 in Toledo, Ohio, the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) is recognized among the leading sanctioning bodies in the country. Closing in on completing its sixth decade after hundreds of thousands of miles of racing, ARCA administers over 100 race events each season in two professional touring series and local weekly events.

This Week’s 5-Hour Energy Toyota … Steve Wallace will pilot Rusty Wallace Racing chassis RWR-052 in Saturday afternoon’s Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. Built new for the 2011 season, this Toyota Camry debuted at Road America in June, where the Greensboro, N.C.-native started sixth and led four laps before being involved in an incident that eliminated him from contention after 52 of 57 laps.

Through 22 Races … With 22 races of the 2011 season in the record books, Wallace has accumulated one top-five, four top 10 and 11 top-15 finishes, an average starting position of 13.6 and an average finish of 16.5. Wallace has completed 97.6 percent of the laps contested (4,044 of 4,143) thus far.

Get to the Points … Wallace is currently ranked eighth in the NASCAR Nationwide Series driver point standings, 66 in arrears to seventh-place driver Kenny Wallace.

Wallace at The Glen … In four previous Nationwide Series starts at Watkins Glen, Wallace has recorded one top-10 finish and has been atop the leaderboard for two circuits. Wallace’s finishes at the Glen over the last four years have been trending in the right direction. Since finishing 34th in his first appearance in August of 2007, Wallace has recorded finishes of 28th, 12th and ninth, respectively.

Road Course Averages … In 12 previous Nationwide Series road course starts (Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Road America, and Watkins Glen International) Wallace has four top-10 finishes, an average starting position of 12.167, an average finish of 20.167, has completed 751 of 873 of the laps contested and has led six laps.

Welcome Aboard … 5-Hour Energy Racing welcomes Country Fair and Price Chopper as partners for this weekend’s race at Watkins Glen. Country Fair branding will adorn the TV panel of Wallace’s No. 66 Toyota in Saturday afternoon’s race, while Price Chopper logos will be displayed on the lower rear quarter panels.

Last Time at The Glen … Wallace scored a career-best ninth-place in the 2010 running of the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International. The finish placed him alongside road racing ace Ron Fellows and Brad Keselowski as the only drivers to score top-ten finishes at Road America and Watkins Glen last season.

Last Time Out … A yeoman’s effort by Wallace and the No. 66 5-Hour Energy team in last Saturday night’s U.S Cellular 200 at Iowa Speedway afforded the 23-year-old driver an eighth-place finish, his second top-10 showing in four tries at the Midwest oval.

Rusty Wallace Racing at Watkins Glen … In 11 previous Nationwide Series starts at Watkins Glen, Rusty Wallace Racing entries have recorded one pole (Kenny Wallace, 6/92), one top-five and three top-10 finishes, and have been atop the leaderboard for 10 laps.

Rusty Wallace Racing in 2011 … With 22 of 34 races completed thus far in the 2011 season, Rusty Wallace Racing’s three NASCAR Nationwide Series entries have recorded a combined two top-five, 10 top 10 and 23 top-15 finishes. Rusty Wallace Racing Toyotas have completed 8,756 of 9,102 laps attempted, and have been atop the leaderboard for 19 laps with drivers Michael Annett, Jason Bowles, David Reutimann and Wallace.

Welcome Home, Eddie … Eddie D’Hondt, Jr., mechanic and rear tire carrier, is the only native New Yorker on the No. 66 5-Hour Energy team. D’Hondt was born and raised in East Islip, located about 300 miles east of Watkins Glen.

Steve Wallace - Photo Credit: John Harrelson / Getty Images for NASCAR

Cast Your Vote … Voting has begun for the Most Popular Driver of the Year award in the Nationwide Series. Fans are encouraged to log onto NASCAR.com to vote for their favorite driver from the series once per day until voting ends on Thursday, November 17.

“I always seem to run well every time we race at Watkins Glen, but the finishes don’t always show that. In 2008, we were running fourth with just a few laps to go, and we ran out of gas. I really enjoy the track, the area and the history of the place. I’ve gotten accustomed to it over the years, and I always look forward to coming back.” – Steve Wallace on racing at Watkins Glen International

Event Info: Live race coverage begins at 7:30PM EST on ESPN2 and at 7:00 PM EST on MRN

Pulling Out All the Stops… The second half of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season offers a second stop at many of the tracks from earlier in the year. This week, Kenny Wallace will return to Iowa Speedway where he recorded his 500th NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) career-start earlier in May and a career-best finish of sixth at the track owned by his older brother and NASCAR Champion, Rusty Wallace. On Saturday night, Wallace and RAB Racing with Brack Maggard will get their second opportunity to pull out all the stops to help Wallace find victory lane at the .875-mile family-owned, tri-oval track.

Keeping Tabs… When a 12th-place finish feels like a loss, you know it must have been a good month. Last weekend at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis, RAB Racing scored a fifth top-12 finish in as many weeks. Hoping to close out the month of July with a string of top-10 finishes, the team left disappointed with the finish. Returning to the site of a sixth-place finish in the spring, Wallace and RAB Racing expect a rebound from last week and another hearty finish in the No. 09 American Ethanol/Iowa Corn Toyota Camry. In 21 NNS events this season, RAB Racing has notched nine top-10 finishes. Wallace, a veteran in the sport, is currently seventh in the 2011 Nationwide Series driver point standings.

Iowa Speedway Details…

· Saturday night Wallace will make his fourth NNS start at Iowa Speedway.

· Wallace, who made his 500th Nationwide Series career-start in May at Iowa, will take the green flag this time for the 510th time.

· In three previous events, Wallace has an average finish of 11.3 along with two top-10’s.

· RAB Racing has competed in three events at Iowa Speedway with two different drivers. John Wes Townley piloted the No. 09 twice before Wallace joined RAB Racing as full-time driver in 2011.

Welcome Back… American Ethanol returns as primary sponsor of the No. 09 RAB Racing Toyota Camry. American Ethanol made its debut on the RAB Racing machine in April 2011 at Texas Motor Speedway. American Ethanol’s profile will be front and center and seen by millions of fans as American Ethanol helps take NASCAR’s environmental commitment to the next level. The efforts of NASCAR and American Ethanol are projected to expose 80 million people to the benefits of ethanol and link millions of American farmers with the sport of NASCAR. In addition to American Ethanol, Iowa Corn will be on the No. 09 Camry as an additional partner.

Living for the “Chase”… RAB Racing will stay at the Chase Suite Hotel West Des Moines in Clive, Iowa, this weekend while competing at Iowa Speedway. Conveniently located in the heart of West Des Moines, the Chase Suite Hotel is the ideal destination for West Des Moines business or leisure travelers.
The Headlines:

Welcome Home:Des Moines, Iowa’s Michael Annett returns to his home track this weekend for Iowa Speedway’s second Nationwide Series event of 2011. Competing under the Rusty Wallace Racing banner this season, Annett’s ties to Iowa Speedway grow even deeper as his team owner Rusty Wallace designed the signature .875 mile oval. In his three previous Nationwide Series races at Iowa Speedway, the native Hawkeye claimed 11th, seventh and 13th place finishes respectively.

$100,000 Cash Up for Grabs: With a $100,000 bonus courtesy of Nationwide Insurance on the line, Annett is geared up for this weekend’s Dash 4 Cash event at Iowa Speedway. The 25-year-old’s sixth place finish in Nationwide Insurance’s first Dash 4 Cash race at Daytona International Speedway in July qualified him as one of only four contenders for the second Dash 4 Cash payout. Reed Sorenson, Justin Allgaier and Jason Leffler are also eligible for the $100,000 bonus. The highest finisher of those four competitors in Saturday’s race will take home the bonus and qualify for the next Dash 4 Cash event at Richmond International Speedway in September. With the Iowa Speedway grandstands filled with Annett’s hometown crowd, he’s hoping to win big in Saturday’s 250 lap Dash 4 Cash showdown.

Annett Contributes to Third Annual Helmet Raffle: This weekend marks Annett’s third year of supporting the Team WillyK fundraising team in their efforts to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) with an annual helmet raffle. Annett’s initial interest in organizing the race-related raffle started when close family friend, Will Krueger, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia three years ago. Since Annett and Will’s fundraising group teamed together to start the raffle at Iowa Speedway’s inaugural Nationwide Series race in 2009, they have raised $25,000 for LLS. The Team WillyK fundraising team will be on-site at Iowa Speedway this weekend in teal Team WillyK shirts selling raffle tickets. The cost of the tickets is $5 per ticket or five tickets for $20. The raffle winner will receive a commemorative helmet signed by all 43 drivers slated to compete in Saturday’s race. All proceeds benefit LLS.

Back to his Roots: Recognizing the state’s agricultural heritage, Iowa Speedway and Nationwide Insurance will host a “Farm-a-thon” at Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa on Friday at 9 a.m. CT. The four Dash 4 Cash drivers will be participating in three farm-related contests at Living History Farms including a horse-drawn carriage showdown, cow milking race and corn shelling battle. The winning driver will receive a $4,000 gift to their charity of choice. Annett hopes to claim the victory and donate to Team WillyK’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training and Pilot Flying J’s charity of choice, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Home Track History: Hometown favorite Annett’s combined 10.3 average finish in his three most recent races at Iowa Speedway proves his knack for the track. Growing up just miles from the Newton, Iowa oval, Annett gained experience there competing in the ARCA Racing Series as well as the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division events. Annett made his debut in the ARCA Racing Series at Iowa Speedway in June 2007, where the young driver won the SIM Factory Pole Award, led eight laps of the 250 lap race, and came home with a third place finish as he made his first start in the series.

Walk with RWR Stars in Support of Iowa Speedway Foundation: In addition to piloting his racecar at Iowa Speedway this weekend, Annett will also make treads around the .875 mile track in Saturday’s Inaugural Iowa Speedway Foundation Track Walk. Annett will join his team owner, Rusty Wallace, as well as his teammate, Steve Wallace, to walk with fans in support of the Iowa Speedway Foundation. Saturday’s track walk begins at 11 a.m. CT. and fans can participate with a $25 donation that benefits the Iowa Speedway Foundation and Marion County Humane Society. Register online at www.iowaspeedway.com or in person at Iowa Speedway this weekend.

Meet Michael: Annett and several of his fellow Nationwide Series drivers will be signing autographs on Saturday from 2-3 p.m. CT behind the Manatt Grandstands.

For the latest updates on Michael Annett, visit www.michaelannett.com.

From the Cockpit:

Michael Annett on Nationwide Insurance’s Dash 4 Cash Race at Iowa Speedway:

“I’m extremely excited about being one of the four drivers eligible for this weekend’s $100,000 Dash 4 Cash payout. There are a lot of elements that make this week special including Nationwide Insurance’s bonus incentive. We’re racing on my home track, a track that was designed by my team owner, Rusty Wallace, and we’ve really been on top of our game with four top-10s in the last six races. Winning the Dash 4 Cash bonus on my home track would just be the icing on the cake.”

“It’s really exciting that Nationwide provides us with this opportunity, because Saturday’s Dash 4 Cash is a race within a race. Iowa Speedway always puts on a great show, but there are four of us that are racing for that $100,000, and that will make the show even better. It’s another reward that Nationwide Insurance does for us Nationwide-only drivers. They’ve been doing unique things like this ever since they came on board as the sponsor of our series. It’s just really going to make Saturday even more exciting not only for the drivers, but for all the fans as well.”

Michael Annett on Returning to his Home Track:

“I’m really looking forward to racing at my home track this weekend. Being the premier racing series that comes to Iowa Speedway combined with the fact that it’s just down the road from home and I get to be a part of the race is just a dream come true for me. I’m spending the week in Iowa making appearances throughout the area and catching up with those who have been there for me since the start of my racing career. My family, friends, fan base and our primary sponsor this week, Northland Oil, are here in my hometown, so I’m really excited about returning to Iowa Speedway this weekend. I’m very appreciative to the track for all they’ve done for me. Iowa Speedway has played a big role in helping me and Team WillyK to get our third annual helmet raffle organized, and they’ve always been a valued partner.”

Michael Annett on Northland Oil’s Support for Saturday’s Race:

“Northland Oil, a longtime supporter of my racing career, will be featured as the primary sponsor on our Toyota Camry this weekend. We also ran the Northland Oil scheme at Texas in April, and I can’t think of a better place than Iowa Speedway to get a strong finish with their brand on the hood. We’ve really shown our team’s strength since Rick Viers came on board as crew chief in Charlotte, and we’re prepped and ready for running up front all night with our No. 62 Northland Oil Camry at Iowa.”

Talking Shop:

Crew Chief Rick Viers on the Iowa Speedway Race:

“We’ve got Iowa-based Northland Oil on the car this weekend, and their black, red and gold paint scheme looks sharp on the No. 62 Toyota. We’ve got a pretty blue spoiler worth $100,000 on our car this weekend too. I know this weekend is special to Michael with it being his home track, and especially with the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash bonus on the line. We’re going into Iowa this week with a really good plan for Saturday’s race. We’re taking a new car and I think we’ve got a good chance for a solid top-five. We feel good about what we’ve accomplished so far as a team and we’ll take that confidence with us to Iowa looking for another top-notch performance.”

The Machines:

Team 62 Back-Up: RWR-051 – The No. 62 Pilot Flying J team’s last race competing with this chassis was at Bristol Motor Speedway in March.

Short Tracks Back-to Back: With his homecoming at Iowa Speedway just one week away, Nationwide Series driver Michael Annett is gearing up for two consecutive weeks of short track racing. Driving for a team owner known as a short track ace, Annett has his eyes on two strong finishes in back-to-back short track races at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis and his home track Iowa Speedway. Saturday’s 30th Annual Kroger 200 will be the Des Moines, Iowa native’s third career Nationwide Series start at Lucas Oil Raceway.

RWR’s McKinney Visits Home State: Car chief and rear tire changer of the No. 62 Pilot Flying J Toyota, Ryan McKinney, hails from the Hoosier State. McKinney’s 14-year tenure in the sport led him to his current position with Rusty Wallace Racing at the beginning of the 2011 season. The Anderson, Indiana native’s initial interest in racing was sparked back at his hometown track watching his uncle race at Anderson Speedway. McKinney is no stranger to Victory Lane at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Raceway. The Rusty Wallace Racing car chief visited Lucas Oil Raceway’s winners circle with late model driver Brian Rievley in his early years in racing as a late model mechanic. In his spare time, McKinney enjoys working on hot rods and spending time with his daughter Kendall and wife Allison, who also works in the Nationwide Series.

Rusty Wallace Racing at Lucas Oil Raceway: Since 2008, the two-car Rusty Wallace Racing team has one top-five and four top-10s in six starts at Lucas Oil Raceway. The No. 62 entry recorded a sixth place finish in Lucas Oil Raceway’s 2010 Nationwide Series event. Annett’s teammate, Steve Wallace, has finished fifth and tenth respectively in his last two attempts at Lucas Oil Raceway’s .686 mile oval in a Rusty Wallace Racing powered Toyota Camry.

Most Popular Driver Voting Continues: Nationwide Series Most Popular Driver voting has returned for the fourth consecutive year in 2011 and is underway on NASCAR.com. Fans can cast their vote for Rusty Wallace Racing’s Michael Annett once per day by visiting www.NASCAR.com/nnsmpd. Voting runs from now until November 17. (July 14, 2011) – NASCAR veteran Brendan Gaughan will make his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Iowa Speedway this weekend. Gaughan has met the lively Iowa Speedway fans twice before, racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. However, this will be his first Truck Series event at the track built by longtime friend Rusty Wallace.

“Iowa Speedway is a beautiful facility. My buddy Rusty Wallace was a key component in building it. The track is beautiful and it’s already been proven that it is great for racing. I’m anxious to see what we can do with the South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra there,” said Gaughan. “I’ve had good race cars there. I think everyone knows I like the bigger tracks but they’ve done a great job with Iowa. We’re taking one of our favorite trucks there. Bryan Berry has always given me good setups at tracks like Iowa, so he has a little more confidence than I do there. I’ll be much more of a listener than a talker when we get to the track.”

Brendan Gaughan - Photo Credit: John Harrelson / Getty Images for NASCAR

Gaughan says he doesn’t dislike short tracks, on which he has collected one of his eight wins (Milwaukee), but he just feels more at home on the larger tracks. One part about Iowa that he knows he’s looking very forward to is the fan base.

“Iowa race fans are great. That’s one thing I’ve learned about the racing fans is that in the Midwest, the fans they love their racing. Kentucky just had a huge crowd for their first Sprint Cup Series race, and Mansfield, OH, used to draw a ton of people. The Midwest is just a big racing community and it’s always a thrill to race for them, especially at such a beautiful facility as what they have there at Iowa Speedway,” said Gaughan.

Watch Gaughan in the No. 62 South Point Hotel & Casino Tundra on Saturday, July 16th, at Iowa Speedway on SPEED. Racing action airs at 8:00 PM ET, preceded by the NCWTS Setup at 7:30 PM. Not in front of a TV? Tune your radio to your local MRN affiliate.

The American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) awarded “Miller’s Time” second place in its annual Motorsport Book competition, a contest judged by journalism professionals that attracts entries from around the world. Miller’s co-author is Jim Donnelly, an award-winning writer and senior editor of Hemmings Motor News in Bennington, Vermont.

The book recounts the story of Don Miller’s remarkable rise from Chicago hot rodder and automotive businessman to his role as Penske’s top lieutenant in motorsports, a position that made him one of racing’s most respected and influential people. “Miller’s Time” describes Don’s discovery and mentoring of both Rusty Wallace and Ryan Newman, his invention of the NASCAR roof flap, and in gripping detail, the nearly fatal accident on pit road at Talladega that left him disabled.

Coastal 181 presents - Don Miller: "Miller's Time - A Lifetime At Speed"

Miller was humbled when hearing of the award. “I am very pleased, and very grateful, for the recognition we received, especially because it was the first effort for both of us in a project like this,” Miller said. “To have been involved with a friend like Jim Donnelly in telling my story, and then have it win praise from our peers in racing is a true honor.”

“This is the story of Don’s amazing life of accomplishment, lived fully with compassion and humility,” Donnelly said. “Not many authors are fortunate to find a subject with such a worthwhile and interesting story, one that can also so clearly benefit anyone who reads it. I am thrilled to share this tribute with him.”

All net proceeds from the sale of “Miller’s Time” will be used in efforts to prevent child abuse and neglect, a special interest of Miller, who founded “Stocks for Tots” in Mooresville, NC, to mobilize the racing community around the issue. Miller was the recipient of NASCAR’s first Humanitarian of the Year award.
