Fuel Mileage Costs Menard a Top-10 Finish at Chicagoland

After inclement weather postponed the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup to Monday afternoon, Paul Menard and the Zecol/Menards team started the Geico 400 second and were a mainstay in the top 10 until a fuel mileage gamble left the No. 27 Chevrolet Impala one lap shy of the fuel needed to take the checkered flag under full power, forcing the team to coast to a 20th-place finish at Chicagoland Speedway. Under overcast skies, Menard took the green flag on the outside of the front row and settled into the third position after the first circuit around the 1.5-mile oval. He remained in the top five and was running fourth when a lap-30 competition caution was called. With Menard reporting that the racer was just a little tight in the center of the turns, the Slugger Labbe-led crew changed four tires with air pressure adjustments and packed the Chevrolet with fuel. Losing ground only to a team that opted for two tires, Menard restarted fifth on lap 35. A long green-flag run ensued and was halted on lap 69 when the yellow flag was displayed for debris with the No. 27 running fourth. Menard returned to pit road for additional air pressure adjustments to assist with a late-developing loose condition. Two additional pit stops while under caution and one under green-flag conditions allowed the Zecol/Menards team to work on the car’s persistent loose handling with air pressure and wedge adjustments. Menard fell out of the top 10 only briefly from lap 185 until a lap-204 caution afforded him another visit to pit road where the No. 27 crew executed another speedy pit stop that catapulted him from 11th to the ninth position. With fuel mileage coming into play, Menard’s final trip down pit road was for fuel-only on lap 214 and the No. 27 team held their breath for the closing 53 laps, knowing that it would be close. As he took the white flag in the seventh position, Menard reported that he was out of fuel. He joined many other competitors in coasting to the checkered flag, crossing the start finish-line in the 20th position.

PAUL MENARD QUOTES:

“We ran up front all day long but, unfortunately, just ended up on the losing side of the fuel mileage battle this weekend. We had a good car today and the No. 27 Zecol/Menards pit crew was damn good on pit road. Everyone worked really hard this weekend and we made a ton of ground up from where we started in practice on Friday. We have nine more races to go this season and we’re going to go into each weekend looking to get another win.”

Harvick Claims Runner-Up Finish and Points Lead at Chicagoland

Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet team left Monday’s Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway with a second-place finish and the lead in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings. After the start of the 400-mile event was delayed a day due to rain, Harvick rolled off from the 30th starting position when the field took the green flag on Monday morning. On the first run of the day, the red and white machine was able to gain five positions before NASCAR threw the yellow flag for a competition caution at lap 30. Before bringing the No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet down pit road for service, he radioed to the team that the car’s handling was “tight through the middle and loose off” and that he needed it to “turn better through the center” of the corner. He pitted at lap 32 for four tires and fuel and restarted from the 26th position. After the field took the green flag on lap 35, Harvick was able to gain eight positions in just five laps. After working his way up to 15th when the caution flag waved again at lap 70, he and radioed the team that the car was “rolling right there.” The Budweiser team pitted once again for four tires and fuel. They unfortunately lost some ground on the stop as Harvick had to maneuver around tires from the team pitted in front of the No. 29 team on pit road, a problem they encountered throughout the 267-lap race. The No. 29 Chevrolet Impala restarted in the 16th position on lap 75 and Harvick cracked the top 10 for the first time at lap 80, then stayed there throughout the remainder of the race. The No. 29 team pitted four more times for tires and fuel, running as high as fifth before the team’s final trip down pit road at lap 214. On that stop, the team took fuel only and told Harvick to save fuel as they appeared to be several laps shy of the checkered flag. The Bakersfield, Cali. native restarted in the seventh position and focused on saving fuel during the first part of the run. In the closing laps Harvick picked up the pace and with that he began to pick off positions as other teams started conserving fuel. He worked his way up to second with five laps to go and started closing in on the leader. The distance was too great for the short number of laps remaining, however, and Harvick crossed the start-finish line in second position, marking his seventh top 10 finish in his 11 starts at Chicagoland Speedway. Harvick now leads the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings by a seven-point margin over Tony Stewart.

KEVIN HARVICK QUOTE:

“We had to save a lot (of fuel) there at the beginning (of the run) and I just didn’t know how much we had in our tank there at the end but I was hoping we had enough. Everybody on the Budweiser Chevrolet did a good job and this is a good way to start the Chase. I wasn’t ever comfortable but I knew I had saved a little bit under caution and a little bit at the beginning of that run and they felt comfortable with the lap times. Everybody on our Budweiser Chevrolet did a great job and knowing exactly how far we could go, we ran out coming on to pit road there, so good first race for us.”

Burton and Caterpillar Racing Team Overcome Adversity to Post Top 15 at Chicagoland

Jeff Burton and the Caterpillar Racing team battled back from an early ill-timed caution to earn a top-15 finish in the GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway on Monday. After Sunday’s inclement weather in the Windy City forced NASCAR to postponed the start of the 267-lap event until Monday, Burton took the green flag from the 22nd position in the No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet and moved into the top 20 soon after. Crew chief Luke Lambert pulled out some strategy early in the race, calling for a two-tire stop during a NASCAR-mandated competition caution on lap 30 in order to gain track position. The decision paid off as Burton lined up the yellow and black machine ninth for the restart on lap 34. The South Boston, Va., native maintained his track position in and around the top 10 until hitting pit road for a green-flag pit stop on lap 69. As the No.31 Cat Chevrolet received service of four tires and fuel, the caution flag waved on the track for debris, requiring Burton to take the wave around to remain on the lead lap. When the field returned to green-flag conditions on lap 75, Burton was sitting in the 31st position. Though it was early in the 400-mile event, the Cat Racing Team spent the remaining laps scrapping their way back into contention. After starting near the back of the field for the lap-75 restart, a long green-flag run allowed the leader to reach the No. 31 Chevrolet, and Burton fell one lap down just as the caution flew on lap 144. Fortunately, he was in position to receive the ‘Lucky Dog’ pass and immediately made up the lost lap and following a four-tire pit stop, Burton lined up in the 21st position on lap 150. Burton moved up to 19th position before the next caution flew on lap 164 and Lambert once again called for a two-tire pit stop, gaining the team an additional three spots and lining up the No. 31 in the 16th position as the field returned to green with 100 laps remaining in the event. Up to 13th by lap 200, Burton’s progress was slowed as the caution flag flew again on lap 205. Difficulty during the team’s four-tire pit stop dropped the Cat Chevrolet to the 17th spot for the restart on lap 208. A quick caution just four laps later allowed Lambert to call Burton to pit road for one final stop of the day, this time choosing for a fuel-only visit, which returned the 21-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner to green-flag conditions in the 15th position. Burton immediately went into fuel saving mode with his Cat machine, losing a few spots in the process early in the run but he ultimately earned them back as the No. 31 Chevrolet was able to make it to the checkered flag on fuel, claiming the 15th-place finish in the process.

Start – 22 Finish – 15 Laps Led – 0 Points Position – 24

JEFF BURTON QUOTE:

“We had a few setbacks due to the timing of some caution flags today, but ultimately battled back for the 15th-place finish. This Caterpillar Racing Team is gaining each week and looking to improve further at Loudon next weekend.”

Bowyer Survives Fuel Mileage Race with Top-10 Finish at Chicagoland

Clint Bowyer and the No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper Chevrolet team finished off a consistent run with a top-10 finish in the rain-delayed GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Starting from the 21st position on Monday after NASCAR and track officials were forced to postpone the event on Sunday due to rain, the Richard Childress Racing driver started off the 267-lap event by gaining five positions in the first 30 laps before NASCAR officials called a mandatory competition caution on lap 30. After getting four fresh Goodyear tires and Sunoco E15 fuel during the competition caution, the Emporia, Kan., native jumped up four more positions to 12th before the red and yellow machine started to become loose off and tight in the center of the 18-degree banked corners of the 1.5-mile oval. The four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race winner continued to give feedback to crew chief Shane Wilson over the next 100 laps as Wilson directed the “Helping Hands” pit crew to make necessary adjustments on the No. 33 Chevrolet to fix the loose-handling condition. By lap 211, the 32-year-old driver found himself in the top 10. When the final caution flag was displayed on lap 214 the team made their final pit stop of the day and Wilson elected to take fuel only playing a strategy dependant on the race running under green-flag conditions until the end. Bowyer ran 15th until 13 laps to go, and had enough Sunoco fuel to make it to the end of the 400-mile race as many other competitors in the 43-car field started to run out of gas. Bowyer drove his Chevrolet Impala through the field with ease, securing a seventh-place finish for his 10th top-10 finish of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season. With the strong finish, Bowyer gained a spot in NSCS driver championship point standings, improving to 13th-place.

Start – 21 Finish – 7Laps Led – 0 Points – 13

CLINT BOWYER QUOTE:

“It was a good day for the No. 33 Cheerios/Hamburger Helper team. We finally had luck on our side and didn’t run out of gas at the end. Shane (Wilson, crew chief) called a good race and the pit crew was consistent on pit road.”

Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet team earned their second win of 2011 on Friday night at Chicagoland Speedway, the fourth of the sophomore NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver’s career. With the victory, Dillon moved up to second in the NCWTS point standings, just three markers shy of the point lead with seven races remaining in the season. Dillon started the Fast Five 225 from the fifth position but to seventh as he struggled with a loose-handling chassis during his initial run. He led lap 45 to gain a valuable championship bonus point as green-flag pit stops began to cycle through before pitting himself for four tires and fuel on lap 46. Dillon fell one lap down to the race leader following his pit stop, but was the recipient of the Lucky Dog award when the caution flag was displayed on lap 57. Crew chief Danny Stockman instructed Dillon to pit during the caution period for fuel and a track bar adjustment to correct the loose-handling condition. He restarted in the sixth position at the tail end of the longest line when green-flag racing resumed on lap 65. He was running third with 20 laps remaining when he made his final pit stop of the night under green-flag conditions. By taking right-side tires only, the Bass Pro Shops team fired off a pit stop in less than six seconds and Dillon beat his competitors off of pit road, assuming the race lead with 13 laps remaining. The RCR entry was extremely fast during the final run, and Dillon crossed the finish line nearly five seconds ahead of Kevin Harvick to earn the win.

It means the most to me because we beat those Cup guys. I ran up there, racing with Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick. Kevin was great all night but my crew chief, Danny Stockman, made the call at the end for two tires. Danny knows that when I get out front it’s like smelling blood for a shark. When we got out there, we could just take off. The team kept us out front by gaining spots every time we came to pit road. I love coming to pit road when they’re like that. It’s awesome.”

Rookie Joey Coulter Brings Home Top-15 Finish at Chicago

After fighting an ill-handling Chevrolet Silverado for most of the 150-lap event, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series rookie Joey Coulter finished 12th in the Fast Five 225 at Chicagoland Speedway. The Miami Springs, Fla., native started the race in the 11th position and immediately reported to crew chief Harold Holly that his No. 22 RCR Graphics Center Chevrolet was loose in turns three and four, which made it difficult to gain momentum and pass other competitors down the 2,400-foot frontstretch of the 1.5-mile oval. On lap 42, Holly called the 21-year-old driver to pit road under green-flag conditions for a four-tire pit stop with chassis adjustments. Fifteen laps later, the caution flag was displayed pinning Coulter one lap down to the leaders. After green-flag racing resumed on lap 66, Coulter fought hard to get in position to receive the “lucky dog” pass from NASCAR. Instead, another caution flag came out before he could get there and Coulter was forced to take the “wave around” pass to get back on the lead lap in 16th with 62 laps to go. The Richard Childress Racing driver wrestled a tight-handling truck the remainder of the race, but was able to pass four more competitors before taking the checkered flag at the Joliet, Ill.,-based facility in 12th place. He now sits seventh in the NCWTS driver championship point standings.

JOEY COULTER QUOTE:

“It was just a bizarre night for the No. 22 RCR Graphics Center Chevrolet. For some reason, we couldn’t find the balance on the truck. We were loose, tight, then loose again and ended up finishing tight. I just hate it for these guys on the No. 22 team. They work hard and build me fast trucks every weekend. Also, congratulations to my RCR teammate, Austin Dillon, on his win.”

Good Points Night for Tim George Jr. at Salem Speedway

Tim George Jr. and the No. 31 Applebee’s/Potomac Family Dining Group team earned their eighth top-five finish of the 2011 season with a third-place result in the ARCA Fall Classic 200 at Salem Speedway. George started Saturday night’s 200-lap main event from the 12th position and began making his way into the top 10 when contact was made with another competitor bringing out the first caution of the night on lap eight. George suffered minimal hood damage and was able to remain on the racing surface during the caution period. The New York, N.Y., native restarted 10th when green-flag racing resumed on lap 11 and continued climbing through the top 10 for the next 50 circuits. The Gere Kennon-led team was called to pit road for their first stop of the night under the ensuing caution for right-side tires and fuel on lap 64. Quick work by the RCR pit crew granted George a fifth-place starting position for the lap-70 restart. With a good-handling Chevrolet at his finger tips, George ran inside the top five for the remaining 130 laps around the half-mile bullring. He was scored third when the caution flag was displayed on lap 148, during which time the team made their final pit stop of the race for four fresh Hoosier tires and Sunoco fuel. Green-flag racing resumed on lap 153 with George in second-place and the veteran ARCA driver continued racing in the top half of the field. With less than 20 laps remaining, George made contact with another competitor while running third, bringing out the final caution of the night. With no damage to his No. 31 Chevrolet, George did not pit and restarted third with seven laps remaining and was able to keep his position for the checkered flag at lap 200 resulting in his eighth top five finish of the season. With his third-place finish, George closed the gap between himself and the fifth-place contender in points and now sits 30 markers outside the top-five with two races remaining in the season.

“It was a good run for the No. 31 Applebee’s/Potomac Family Dining Group Chevrolet team, despite suffering that hood damage. We came here with the intention of finishing in the top-five or getting the win, and we did just that in finishing third. It was a good point’s day for us. It’s been a good season for us on the short tracks, and we proved that again tonight.”

Ty Dillon Earns a Solid, Top 10 Finish at Salem Speedway

Ty Dillon and the No. 41 Hemelgarn/Childress Insitute of Pediatric Trauma Chevrolet team finished eighth in Saturday night’s ARCA Fall Classic 200 at Salem Speedway after a loose-handling condition plagued them for a majority of the night. Dillon started the 200-lap affair from the 14th position and quickly climbed into the top 10 by lap eight when the first caution of the night was displayed. Green-flag racing resumed on lap 11, and the young driver radioed to his crew informing them the car was free in the center of the corners. Relief came on lap 64 as the yellow flag was waved over the 34-car field. Crew chief Scott Naset called the No. 41 Chevrolet to pit road for right-side tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment. Quick work by the pit crew permitted Dillon the sixth spot for the lap-70 restart. Unfortunately, the adjustments didn’t help the Lexington, N.C., native, and he began slipping back before being scored eighth on lap 87. Under the ensuing caution, Dillon pitted for a wedge adjustment to alleviate the loose-handling condition plaguing the team. Restarting ninth when green-flag racing resumed on lap 93, Dillon continued to fight the loose racer and slipped to 12th before a lap-148 caution granted the Welcome, N.C.-based team another opportunity to make a trip to pit road. The Naset-led team serviced the No. 41 Chevrolet Impala with four fresh Hoosier tires and fuel in hopes the new tires would remedy the loose condition. As the green flag waved on lap 153, Dillon improved his position by three spots, moving up to eighth, proving that four fresh tires were the answer to the loose-handling conditions. Unfortunately, with time running out, Dillon was unable to make up anymore spots in the final 30 laps resulting in an eighth-place result.

“It was a frustrating night for the No. 41 Hemelgarn/CIPT Chevrolet team. Flash (crew chief Scott Naset) and the guys built a fast car and it showed when we unloaded. We ended up with a bad tire and couldn’t recover from that. However, to be able to finish in the top-10, despite our struggles, shows just how strong this RCR team is. We’ll head to Kansas Speedway with hopes of a better finish.”

The No. 1 ModSpace Ford started third for the 200-lap race; however the first 20 laps were run under caution because the track was damp. When the green flag waved, the Supply, N.C., native moved into second, but on Lap 27 McCumbee fell back to third. Shortly after, McCumbee encountered lapped traffic, but was able to navigate around it.

Maintaining his position in the lead pack, McCumbee made contact with another competitor on the .555-mile oval that resulted in damage to the No. 1 car’s left front fender and eventually cut the tire. McCumbee had to pit under green and lost a few laps to the race leader.

“We had a great car at Salem,” McCumbee said. “I knew we had damage to the fender, but I didn’t think it was too severe. However, it ultimately led to the tire issue and a green flag pit stop.”

Despite the setback, McCumbee continued to pick up positions and finished ninth in the 111-mile event.

“I’m happy with our top-10 finish,” continued McCumbee. “We had a car that was capable of winning, but I think we proved that our ModSpace Fords are going to be fast this year. We know we have what it takes to win.”

Andy Belmont, Team Manager for Andy Belmont Racing (ABR), led the No. 1 ModSpace Ford’s effort and is pleased with the outcome.

“We were able to come out of this with a pretty good finish,” said Belmont. “Our strategy was to take care of the car and log laps early, then race hard at the end. Even though we had an unscheduled pit stop, Chad managed to pick up nine positions. It shows the team’s determination.”

The next event on the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule for McCumbee and the No. 1 ModSpace Ford team is Sunday, May 15, at Toledo Speedway. The race starts at 2 p.m. with live timing and scoring coverage provided by ARCA Nation at ARCARacing.com.

Bad Luck Plagues the No. 27 Libman/Menards Chevrolet Team in Richmond

Saturday night short-track racing is always unpredictable with drivers rubbing fenders and tempers flaring. The Crown Royal 400 proved to be no different under the lights of Richmond International Raceway. After starting the No. 27 Libman/Menards Chevrolet from the 10th position, handling issues plagued the team throughout the 400-lap event. The Slugger Labbe-led crew worked diligently on each pit stop to remedy the tight-center condition that Menard was battling on the 0.75-mile race track. Choosing to remain on track during the lap-292 caution-flag period, Menard restarted from the sixth position. Hopes of salvaging a solid finish were dashed when a multi-car accident on lap 301 collected the No. 27 Impala. The Libman/Menards team worked to make repairs to the heavily damaged car while keeping Menard on the lead lap. Shortly after green-flag racing resumed, Menard reported to the team that the engine temperature was climbing. He drove the car to pit road where they quickly removed all remaining tape from the nose of the car. When that didn’t help, he returned to the pit stall again and the No. 27 crew followed Labbe’s orders to hook the car up to the cool down unit. The pit stops cost the team 15 laps to the leader; however, Menard was able to complete the race, bringing home a disappointing 37th-place finish.

Start – 10 Finish – 37 Laps Led – 0 Points – 15

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:

“The Libman/Menards team worked to adjust the car with each pit stop and eventually we got back on the lead lap. We were running sixth when we were caught up in someone else’s mess. The guys did a good job of keeping us on the lead lap despite about eight or nine trips to pit road. It wasn’t until we started to overheat that we had to come in under green and lost a lot of ground. It just wasn’t our night.”

Harvick, No. 29 Team Post 12th-Place Finish in Richmond

Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet team scored a 12th-place finish in Saturday night’s Crown Royal 400 at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. Harvick started the race from the 12th position and ran as high as eighth and as low as 35th (during a round of green-flag pit stops) over the course of the 400-lap event. Early in the race, Harvick radioed to the crew that the car wouldn’t “roll through the center (of the corner) like I need it to and then I’m loose up off.” He continued to fight the car’s handling for much of the night despite the numerous chassis and air pressure adjustments the team made to the car. Harvick ran inside the top 15 for most of the first half of the race. In the second half, he cracked the top 10 at lap 305 after narrowly avoiding a wreck and raced his way up to eighth before dropping back a few spots in the final 50 laps. The No. 29 Budweiser Chevrolet team pitted for the final time at lap 293, taking four tires and fuel. Following the stop, crew chief Gil Martin asked Harvick to save as much fuel as he could under caution in the final 100 laps as the team thought they might be a few laps short of making it to the end. While Harvick went down a lap to the leader with just over 10 laps to go, he was able to complete the final laps on fuel and brought home a 12th-place finish.

Up and Down Night for Burton, Cat Racing Team in Richmond

Jeff Burton and the Cat Racing team endured a tough outing in Saturday night’s 400-lap feature at Richmond International Raceway, but never-give-up attitudes prevailed and the team rallied to score a 16th-place finish. After rolling off the starting grid 25th, the veteran driver tussled with a loose-handling Caterpillar Chevrolet that, ultimately, placed him one lap down to the leaders and left him fighting for the Lucky Dog award for most of the first half of the race. A rash of cautions just past the halfway mark rewarded Burton with a return to the lead lap where he began his accent up the leader board, moving from 22nd to 11th in just 22 laps. Two more cautions slowed the field at laps 293 and 302 that left the South Boston, Va., native at point when crew chief Todd Berrier made the call to stay on the racing surface while other competitors pitted. After leading the field back to green for the final 87 laps, Burton settled into the fourth position while the team hoped for a caution as the No. 31 Chevrolet was short on fuel in order to go the distance. Unfortunately, the caution never came and the 21-time Sprint Cup Series race winner was forced to pit on lap 383 for fuel and two right-side tires. He returned to competition 20th on the scoring pylon and notched four positions in the closing 15 laps to score a 16th-place result. The finish allowed the Berrier-led crew to advance two spots, to 20th, in the overall point standings where they now sit 35 markers behind Richard Childress Racing teammate Paul Menard in 15th.

JEFF BURTON QUOTE:

“Tough race for us tonight. We fought to get back on the lead lap for much of the race but, when we did, our Caterpillar Chevrolet was handling better and we were able to make up some ground. The rash of cautions near the end threw us out of sequence and we had to pit for fuel with about 20 laps to go. I’m proud of the team for trying some strategy but, unfortunately, it just didn’t work out in our favor.”

33 BB&T

Bowyer Jumps Three More Positions in Points with Top-10 Finish in Richmond

Clint Bowyer and the No. 33 BB&T Chevrolet team led 18 laps en route to their fifth straight top 10, finishing sixth in the Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway. Starting from the third position, the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet handled great in the beginning of the race. It took Bowyer only 25 laps to grab the lead and earn a valuable bonus championship driver point for the fifth race in a row. Bowyer would continue to run in the top five for a majority of the first half of the 400-lap event. As the race progressed and daytime turned to night at the ¾-mile oval, the No. 33 Chevrolet’s grip level deteriorated and Bowyer slid back into the eighth position on the track. Crew chief Shane Wilson and the “Helping Hands” pit crew continued to service the Chevrolet under every pit cycle while making adjustments to the car that would help increase the grip that Bowyer needed to make a run back into the top five. After back-to-back caution-flag periods on laps 280 and 293, Bowyer decided to come down pit road to take four fresh Goodyear tires and Sunoco E15 which put him outside of the top 10 since most competitors didn’t pit or only took two fresh tires. On the ensuing restart while running three-wide in a massive pack of cars, the Emporia Kan., native was collected in a multi-car accident on the RIR backstretch causing moderate, but fixable, damage to both front fenders. Bowyer immediately came down pit road and the crew fixed the damage on the car, getting him out of the pits on the lead lap in 16th with fresh tires and most importantly, a full tank of gas. That accident turned out to be the final yellow-flag period of the race. Over the 86-lap green-flag run to the finish, Bowyer continued to run consistent lap times with the leaders and gained 10 positions while other cars were forced to pit for gas late in the race. He crossed the finish line on lap 400 in the sixth position, moving up three more spots to seventh in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver championship point standings. He has now gained 17 positions in the last five NSCS races.

CLINT BOWYER QUOTE:

“I’m really happy with the BB&T Chevrolet team’s sixth-place effort. Even though we got caught up in one of those typical short-track incidents, the guys never gave up. We led some laps and got out of here (Richmond) seventh in the points.”

Tim George Jr’s Promising Run at Salem Speedway Ends Early with Late-Race Incident

Tim George Jr. was in position for a top-five finish at Salem Speedway, but a turn-two incident with three laps to go ended his day shy of the finish, relegating the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet to an 11th-place result. George started the Kentuckiana ARCA 200 from the 15th-position but knew that his Chevrolet was very good under race conditions. The first 20 laps of the 200-lap affair was run under caution to account for a racing surface that was not completely dry due to heavy morning rain showers, and George spent the opening segment of the race in the top15. However, he started picking up positions following a lap-52 caution that allowed the RCR team to pit for four fresh Hoosier tires. With fresh rubber under his Chevrolet, George was able to race his way to third position by lap 70, and remained in the top five as he battled cars around the tough Southern Indiana-based short track. He was running fourth on lap 197 when he made contact with another car at the bottom of turn two, resulting in a spin. With extensive damage to the black and white No. 31, George’s race ended short of the finish, which was extended to 206 laps to accommodate a green-flag finish. He finished 11th, nine laps down to the leader.

Start – 15 Finish – 11 Laps Led — 0

TIM GEORGE JR QUOTE:

“The No.31 ARCA guys worked really hard this weekend, as always. Everything seemed to come together during the race — strategy wise. I almost lost it in qualifying and that wasn’t a good start to our effort. But, we knew we were good in race trim. We proved that by being able to race near the top five. I’m a bit frustrated because I often find myself to be right there at the end and unable to capitalize. We all stacked up on the back stretch, and the No. 52 and I got together with two laps to go.”

“Coming away in 11th isn’t the end of the world for Salem, but we’ve had some unfortunate circumstances that have kept us from two top fives in a row. I look forward to Toledo, so we can change that. I also have to thank my spotter Will Lind. He’s been at RCR a long time, and his knowledge wore off a bit on me today.”

2011 CC Team Logos ARS 41 RCR 150 px

Ty Dillon Survives Salem Short Track with Second-Place Finish in RCR’s No. 41 UNOH Chevrolet

A cut tire with less than 50 laps to go could have caused serious issues for Ty Dillon and the Scott Naset-led Richard Childress Racing team, but hard work and perseverance helped the rookie ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards team rebound with a second-place finish in Sunday afternoon’s Kentuckiana ARCA 200 at Salem Speedway. Gray skies and rain welcomed the University of Northwestern Ohio-sponsored team to the short track on Sunday morning, but a break in the weather allowed ARCA and track officials to start the 200-lap race on schedule. The first 20 laps were run under yellow-flag conditions as teams adjusted to the slightly damp race track, and Dillon led the field to green from the pole position. The majority of the field, sans Dillon, took advantage of a lap-52 caution to pit for four fresh Hoosier tires, a definite advantage at the weathered and old short track. As a result, Dillon lost the race lead on lap 80 as teams with fresher Hoosier rubber were able to pass him, and he fell one lap down to the leaders soon thereafter before earning the “Lucky Dog” award on lap 108. Naset made the call to pit under caution for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment. Although Dillon had to restart at the tail end of the longest line, he had confidence in his Chevrolet and was able to work his way into the top five within 10 laps. He was battling for the lead on lap 155 when he cut a right-front tire, sending the No. 41 UNOH Chevrolet into his closest competitor before scraping the outside wall in turns three and four. Dillon immediately made a series of four separate pit stops under the ensuing caution period, and the RCR team was able to make sufficient repairs without losing a lap to the leaders. Restarting at the tail end of the longest line, Dillon spent the remainder of the race fighting for position and was able to drive his way up to second place before the end of the race. He now leads the point standings heading into the May 15 Menards 200 at Toledo Speedway.

Start – 1 Finish – 2 Points Position – 1 (leads by 65 points)

TY DILLON QUOTE:

“We had a really fast car. We were coming back through the field with fresh tires. I just overdrove a little bit and blew a right front. I overheated it. These guys never gave up on the UNOH Chevy; she was really fast. To be able to finish second after everything we went through today is a testament to this team. I think we showed that we can be championship contenders.”

Poole, who drove the No. 55 Renton Coil Spring/Midas Chevrolet for Venturini Motorsports in his ARCA Racing Series debut, gave Venturini a second consecutive spring win on Salem’s high-banked, 0.555-mile oval.

“I just feel blessed to be in this car and get the Venturinis to Victory Lane,” Poole said. “It’s incredible. My first time at Salem, and my first time in an ARCA car, and I’ve just got to thank God, man.”

Steve Arpin won in the team’s No. 55 car last season; that car was turned over to Max Gresham and the No. 25 Venturini team today.

Poole is the first driver to win his first ARCA Racing Series start since Patrick Long at New Jersey Motorsports Park on September 13, 2009. He passed Tom Hessert on Lap 176, and held the lead over the final 31 laps in a race that was extended to 206 laps because of a late caution period.

“We went a lap down, and I was able to get the lap back, and we got around the 52 car there late in the race,” he said. “The car was good enough, and we had a little bit of tire, and we were able to pull away from everybody there late in the race.”

A 20-year-old from The Woodlands, Texas, Poole started second to Menards Pole Award winner Ty Dillon (No. 41 UNOH Chevrolet). The 200-lap race opened with 20 laps of caution after light rain in southern Indiana throughout the morning left the track slightly damp and in need of drying.

Poole fell to third on the first lap of green flag racing when passed by Chad McCumbee, but gained the position back on the backstretch on Lap 27.

Almost immediately, the top pack of Dillon, Poole, McCumbee, Tom Hessert, and Gresham encountered lapped traffic, but navigated around it. Poole challenged Dillon for the lead on Lap 38, and the group passed Milka Duno one lap later.

Dillon held a 0.652-second lead over Poole after 40 total laps, and the group passed Sean Corr to leave just 15 cars on the lead lap at Lap 45. Dillon extended his lead to 0.764 second, but Poole closed by a half-second over the next five laps and started to truly pressure the pole winner.

Frank Kimmel, Grant Enfinger, and Chris Buescher tangled together on the backstretch on Lap 52, leaving Buescher to be towed off and Enfinger with heavy damage. Kimmel would rebound.

The green flag flew on Lap 60, and Dakoda Armstrong – last fall’s Salem winner – began to challenge Gresham for fifth place. Armstrong spun on Lap 69, though, collecting Salem Speedway veteran and Kentucky native Brett Hudson.

Dillon stayed in the lead with Poole following, but the two made light contact on Lap 79, allowing Gresham to come all the way to the lead two laps later. Dillon, meanwhile, fought his car as it pushed up the track, and lost several spots. Poole experienced trouble, too, falling back to eighth.

The drop by the initial leaders allowed Hessert and a recovered Enfinger to battle for the lead, but Gresham maintained an advantage of about three seconds just after Lap 90. Lapped traffic again played a role in slowing down the lead pack, and by the time Gresham and Hessert passed Kimmel on Lap 100, Gresham’s advantage was down to 0.979 second.

Hessert took the lead on the backstretch of Lap 104, putting Poole one lap down at nearly the same time. Hessert lapped Dillon two laps later. Meanwhile, Enfinger was behind Gresham in third, followed by Tim George Jr. and Matt Merrell at Lap 110. Duno, back on the lead lap, had used an impressive drive through four-wide traffic just four laps earlier to move to sixth.

Merrell bumped Enfinger for third on Lap 118, and then Gresham for second the next lap. Enfinger, still feeling the effects of the earlier incident, brushed the wall in the second turn of Lap 120 from fourth place.

As Merrell approached Hessert’s lead, only one lapped driver was in his way: Poole. At that time, Dillon and teammate Tim George Jr. moved into fourth and fifth, respectively, approximately six seconds behind the lead.

As Dillon challenged Gresham for third, Merrell passed Hessert to take the lead on Lap 127. Dillon, though was only four seconds behind. By Lap 140, he lowered that deficit to three seconds, and then passed Hessert on Lap 145 for second.

By this point, Enfinger was one lap down, and Merrell caught him in the second turn of Lap 146, allowing Dillon to catch up as the two cars battled. Dillon passed Enfinger two laps later, and had Merrell all to himself. George worked hard to slow Merrell and help his teammate, and the next hurdle for the two leaders was Dufault on Lap 150. Dillon caught Merrell five laps later, but Merrell maintained the lead out of Turn 4. One turn later, though, Dillon lost his right front tire and he and Merrell crashed, sending Josh Williams to the lead.

“We had a really fast car,” Dillon said. “We were coming back through the field with fresh tires. I just overdrove a little bit and blew a right front. I overheated it. These guys never gave up on the UNOH Chevy; she was really fast.”

Williams started first at the green flag on Lap 171, just ahead of Hessert and Poole, who had rebounded. His lead would be short-lived, though, as upon the ensuing green flag Hessert sped to the front and drove away from Williams. Poole also passed Williams, taking second.

Poole passed Hessert on Lap 176, and led by more than a full second one lap later. Even amid several multi-car incidents over the final laps, Poole was able to maintain the lead, and Dillon and Kimmel both rebounded into the top five after George and Hessert made contact on Lap 198. The race was extended to 206 laps after late cautions, and Poole stuck to the lead through every lap. Dillon and Kimmel had a chance to challenge on the final restart, but Poole drove away to win in his ARCA debut. His final margin of victory was 0.643 second.

Poole was quick to thank Arpin, who won last April at Salem, for his advice.

“I want to shout out to Steve Arpin,” he said. “I talked to him before I came out here and he helped me out. His tips were pretty good.”

Dillon finished second, just missing on his bid to win four of his first six ARCA starts.

“I hate to lose, but second place isn’t bad after all the stuff we went through,” Dillon said.

Kimmel, a nine-time ARCA winner at Salem, was third. The result was his 24th top-five in 35 ARCA starts at Salem. Bryan Silas, making his ninth career Salem start, finished fourth to match his career high. Merrell ended the race fifth.

Williams was sixth, Hessert seventh, Armstrong eighth, McCumbee ninth, and Enfinger 10th. The race was slowed by eight cautions for 70 laps. The full results from the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 are now available on ARCARacing.com.

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards returns to action at its home track, Toledo Speedway, on Sunday, May 15.

(SALEM, Ind.) – The winner of the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell at every race earns an extra 15 points in the standings, and that’s a fact not lost on ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards rookie Ty Dillon.

Dillon (No. 41 UNOH Chevrolet) captured the Menards Pole Award for the third time in this season’s three races, driving a qualifying lap around the 0.555-mile Salem Speedway in 17.509 seconds (114.113 mph). Dillon edged newcomer Brennan Poole, who drove the No. 55 Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet to second with a lap of 17.58 seconds (113.652 mph).

Dillon will start first in Sunday’s Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200, marking his fourth time rolling out of the top position in only six career starts. He is the first driver to win the first three poles in a season since Bill Venturini won poles at Daytona, Atlanta, and Talladega to start the 1987 season.

“Our car’s been awesome,” Dillon said. “We unloaded, and I hadn’t run the track. In practice I ran a lot of laps. We got the car the way I wanted it. I thought we weren’t going to qualify on the pole. We were a little too loose, but that just says how fast our race car is. I’m really proud of Flash (crew chief Scott Naset) and all the guys on our UNOH Chevy. Hopefully, it’ll carry over to tomorrow and we can win the race.”

Dillon ran 85 laps during 90 minutes of practice early in the afternoon, more than all but one driver.

To date this season, Dillon has earned the maximum of 45 qualifying bonus points. The ARCA Racing Series awards qualifying bonus points on a 15-10-5 basis for the top three positions.

“That’s one of the main things we started out saying this year,” he said. “If we’re going to win the championship, there’s 285 points to go out there and get from poles. We’re doing great so far and we’ll keep going after them.”

The 20-year-old Poole, the current UARA-STARS Series points leader, will start outside Dillon on the front row in his ARCA Racing Series debut.

“It went pretty well,” Poole said. “I’m pretty happy. The car’s driving pretty good. The track, after sitting there for a while, was slick. I drove off into (Turn) 1 pretty hard and carried just a little too much speed, which hurt us a little. We’re starting up front, so hopefully that’ll give us a better chance to stay out of trouble all day and we’ll be able to be up there toward the front.”

Poole appreciated the opportunity to make his ARCA debut with a mainstay in the series, Venturini Motorsports.

“I just want to thank Venturini Motorsports for giving me the opportunity to drive one of their cars,” he said. “It’s awesome. It’s a lot of fun when you get in good equipment. It makes your job as a driver a lot easier.”

Chad McCumbee (No. 1 ModSpace Ford), a pole winner at Salem in his rookie season of 2005, will start third.

“It’s a lot better than I was thinking after practice,” McCumbee said with a smile. “We messed with a bunch of stuff after practice and got the car driving a lot better, but still, we didn’t know where we were at with our ModSpace Ford. We were really scratching our heads, and we were frustrated. There was something happening that we just couldn’t put our finger on. We talked about it for a while and made a few fairly significant changes for qualifying. I feel very confident now that we found what we were fighting. I’m real pleased with that. That five points for the bonus will help us make up what we lost in Talladega.”

McCumbee expressed surprise at his starting position.

“I would have never thought we’d be within a tenth of the pole, and then when you are within a tenth of the pole, you think, ‘Where could we have gotten something else at?’ But we know where we can be better and we made a lot of gains today. This was the first time working with Wayne Carroll and the new guys here at ABR and it was a pleasure to work with them. We’re going to have some good stuff this year.”

Dakoda Armstrong, last September’s winner at Salem, qualified fourth in the No. 22 Cunningham Motorsports Dodge. Chris Buescher (No. 17 ApplianceZone.com/Jasper Engines & Transmissions/Roulo Brothers Racing Ford) qualified fifth, just one day after making his NASCAR Nationwide Series debut in a surprise start at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia.

Tom Hessert and Frank Kimmel, the top two drivers in practice, will start sixth and seventh. Max Gresham, Chad Hackenbracht, and Brett Hudson will fill out the first five rows in tomorrow’s race.

The 200-lap, 111-mile Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 takes place at 2 p.m. tomorrow, with live timing and scoring coverage presented by ARCA Nation at ARCARacing.com.

Speedway in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards.

Hackenbracht, the New Philadelphia, Ohio native had never seen the half-mile short track before a private test session at the Southern Indiana track last week. But, thanks to a collective effort between Hackenbracht, crew chief Rob Torrey, director of competition Kevin Reed and the remainder of the family-owned team, CGH Motorsports so far is making their inaugural short track debut, one to remember.

During the hour and a half-practice session Saturday, Hackenbracht guided his No. 58 CGH Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS to as high as fourth on the speed charts before eventually settling for seventh.

Satisfied with their results, the team was heavily optimistic for qualifying. In time trials, Hackenbracht was the ninth driver to lay a qualifying lap for the third race of the season. The lap of 17.769 seconds at 112.443 miles per hour rocketed the championship contender into the top-five before eventually sliding down to ninth quickest overall. The effort was a career-best for the team on a short track but equaled their ninth place starting position last October at Kansas Speedway.

“We have a really good race car,” said Hackenbracht, who is eyeing his first career-first top-10 finish tomorrow. “Without a doubt, I think testing really paid off for us. The car was fast in practice and I’m comfortable with where we are starting. Having those several hours last week on the track allowed me to learn the (track) line and become familiar with Salem’s unique characteristics. Hopefully, tomorrow afternoon we can complete all 200 laps and have a shot at a good finish if not a win.”

CGH Motorsports is actively seeking additional marketing partners for the full 2011 ARCA Racing Series schedule. Single, multi and full-season placements are available on the team’s No. 58 entries. Interested parties are urged to contact Jordan Dahl at 570.234.5449 or jordan@cghmotorsports.com.

The Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 (200 laps / 111 miles) is the third of 19 events on the 2011 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. The 86th ARCA race held at Salem Speedway is a two day show. An on-track autograph session has been etched in before the contest on Sunday, May 1st set to launch at 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The event will take the green flag shortly after 2:15 p.m. The race will not be televised but race coverage including live timing and scoring and radio broadcast will be available through the ARCA Racing Network (ARN) online at arcaracing.com. (April 28, 2011) - 2011 is a year of new beginnings for Milka Duno and her Sheltra Motorsports team, and this weekend will be no different as Duno is set to make her first-career short track start in Sunday afternoon’s Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200. Duno will pilot her No. 63 CITGO SUPERGARD Dodge to her short track debut at one of the most difficult tracks on the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards circuit – Salem Speedway.

Salem’s 0.555-mile oval is sure to present a challenge as it is a track that is difficult for veterans and rookies alike. To say the renowned speedway has a lot of character doesn’t even begin to describe what racing at Salem is like. With a rough, bumpy surface to go along with the fast, unforgiving high-banks, Salem Speedway has challenged some of the most legendary names in auto racing and Milka Duno is ready to add her name to that list.

“This will be my first race on a short track and it will definitely be a challenge,” said Duno. “We were able to test there for half a day last week and I learned as much as possible about the track during that short time. The team has a lot of experience and has had success at Salem so I’ll be working as hard as possible to learn all that I can from them and I hope that it all translates to a good result for us at a difficult track.”

While Duno will be making her first start at Salem, she is prepared for the challenge as she and her Sheltra Motorsports team tested at the high-banked oval last week. Duno’s team owner, 2010 ARCA Racing Series champion, along with her spotter, “Pancho” Carter, an accomplished IndyCar and NASCAR veteran who raced sprints and midgets at Salem, helped Duno to learn and negotiate the half-mile track during the test. The results left her Sheltra Motorsports team confident going into Sunday’s 200-lap event.

“Everyone at Sheltra Motorsports really likes short-track racing,” said Crew Chief Jon Wolfe. “We had a lot of success on the short tracks last year and hope to continue that with Milka. We know it is a learning curve for her. We had a really good test at Salem last week; she learned a lot. It’s going to be a little bit tough for her at first to get used to the high banks of Salem and the way the track is so rough, but we really expect to do well and for her to continue learning. The first half of the season will be about her learning those tracks and really being able to go back the second half of the season and have really strong performances.”

Duno is slated to make her short track debut in race No. 3 on the ARCA Racing Series schedule on Sunday, May 1 for the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200. The green flag will drop for 200 fast-paced laps at 2:15 p.m. EST with live timing and scoring on ARCARacing.com.

Duno at Salem:Milka Duno will not only be making her first-career start at Salem Speedway, but it will also mark her first-career short track start.

Sheltra Motorsports at Salem: Sheltra Motorsports has made eight starts at Salem’s 0.555-mile oval, all with Patrick Sheltra behind the wheel. Salem Speedway is where the team earned their first ARCA Racing Series victory in 2009. Sheltra Motorsports has one win, two top-five and three top-10 finishes at the high-banked track.

This Week’s Dodge: Duno will be piloting chassis No. 005 this weekend. This car was used four times by 2010 Champion Patrick Sheltra last season with top-10 finishes at both Salem events and a best finish of second at Berlin. Sheltra also piloted chassis No. 005 to his first-career ARCA Racing Series victory at Salem Speedway in 2009.

Autographs: Fans will have the chance to meet Milka Duno and all of their favorite ARCA Racing Series drivers on Sunday, May 1 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. EST during an on-track autograph session.

The Miami Springs, FL native yearns for the fast-paced, bumper-to-bumper, banging fun, of the short track circuit, and Berlin Raceway falls right into that category. Heading into this weekends Berlin ARCA 200 (8/7/10), Coulter has once again set sights on taking home his first ARCA victory, and having some good old short track fun.

“Berlin (Raceway) is another one of those really unique and challenging tracks we get to visit on the diversified ARCA tour,” said Coulter. “The fact that it doesn’t really have any true corners and is around half a mile long really makes for an intense side-by-side battle that drivers and fans alike really enjoy. My team (Coulter Motorsports) has prepared me another great car and I am really looking forward to this weekend.”

Coulter, who has only run at the historic track once, looks to improve on his 2010 results in his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet with this weekend’s battle. His only appearance at Berlin Raceway came during the 2009 season (7/25/09), where he battled up front all night long before finishing fifth. Coulter, a 20-year old UNCC (University of North Carolina Charlotte) Mechanical Engineering student, learned much of his short track tenacity from running late models and USAR Pro Cup throughout much of the Southeastern United States, before joining the ARCA circuit.

Coulter Motorsports veteran NASCAR crew chief Harold Holly has prepared car number 10 for Saturday nights (8/7/10) race. Coulter last ran the car at the fast paced, high-banked Salem Speedway (4/11/10), where he ran up-front all day before a late race incident took him from contention. To further prepare for the Berlin ARCA 200, Coulter and his team will participate in an open test at the .5-mile paved circle Friday, August 6th. The test will run from 2:30-3:30 pm, 5:00-6:00 pm and finally, 7:30-8:00 pm and fans are encouraged to come out and watch.

“We have found ourselves caught in some unlucky situations this year, but I believe in our team and Joey (Coulter), and know our time is coming,” commented crew chief Harold Holly. “Joey has been fast everywhere we have gone, and it is only a matter of time before all of the pieces to the puzzle fit together. Berlin (Raceway) is a track Joey really enjoys, and our guys have worked really hard to provide him another fast car.”

The 200-lap, 88-mile Berlin ARCA 200 begins at 8:30 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, August 7th. Make sure to tune into live timing and scoring featured on ARCARacing.com and live audio coverage presented by the BAS Racing Network to catch Joey and his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet.

Sheltra, himself is a long-time supporter of the Boys & Girls Club of Indiantown is planning to make a personal appearance at the event this weekend.

“I haven’t forgotten where I come from,” said Sheltra, who currently sits third in the ARCA Racing Series point standings following his runner-up finish in the most recent ARS event at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on April 23. “To bring a smile to kids’ faces let alone be considered a role model is an indescribable feeling. It really makes you see the true reward of what we (drivers) do.”

Lt. Forrest Yingling, a Patrol Lieutenant for the Martin County Sheriff’s department and member of the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Indiantown expressed his gratitude for Sheltra’s involvement with the function.

“I would like to personally thank Patrick (Sheltra) and Sheltra Motorsports for their help and support of the upcoming Boys & Girls Club annual Golf tournament. You have to love Patrick’s character and concern for the local organizations that teach and mentor the children of this community,” he said.

Yingling continued, “Growing up in Indiantown, Patrick is all too familiar with the missed opportunities that this rural farming and cattle area sometimes brings to families. He has not stepped out of bounds nor forgotten his roots. He has used his opportunities to make something of himself and give back in return. He is an incredible young man.”

Sheltra who floats between Mooresville, North Carolina and Indiantown, Florida during race season visited the YMCA of Indiantown in February to sign autographs, take pictures and answers questions from the local youngsters before competing in the Tire Kingdom 150 presented by ModSpace at Palm Beach (Fla.) International Raceway where the ARCA pro scored one of his five consecutive top-10 finishes this season.

Spots are still available for the Boys & Girls Club “Send A Kid to Summer Camp” Golf tournament which is set for this Saturday, May 8, 2010 at the Indianwood Golf & Country Club (14574 S.W.

Hopes to Return to Championship Form in 2010

SALEM, Ind. (April 22, 2010) – Frank Kimmel II will begin the 2010 Super Street Stock Series season Saturday set on defending his 2009 championship at Salem Speedway.

Kimmel II, third generation driver and son of the 9-time ARCA Racing Series champion Frank Kimmel, will begin racing this weekend at the Casey’s General Store Spring Speed Fest presented by Salem True Value Hardware.

“It’s great to be back to Salem this coming Saturday hopefully to start off the season like we did last year,” said Kimmel II. “My dad and the crew worked really hard all winter on Dolly (car’s name) and we think we can be faster than ever this year. Last year we were fortunate to have luck go our way at the end of the season and we ended up winning the championship.”

In the 2009 Season, Kimmel II posted four feature wins, seven top-five finishes and five pole awards. In nine races, the young Kimmel never finished below seventh place. His success during the season led the 19-year-old driver to win the 2009 Rookie of the Year award in the Lucas Oil Super Stocks and the Super Stock Championship. He is the first driver to win a consecutive Street Stock and Super Stock Championship.

“We are confident that the car is better prepared for this upcoming season and with a little more luck we can win some races and another championship,” stated Kimmel II. “With quite a few new sponsors this season a solid run each week is what we are searching for.”

This season, the No. 68 will be supported by several new sponsors: Prodigy General Contractors, McKenzie Synthetic Inc. and Eddie Gilstrap Motors. The returning sponsors for the car include:Jim French Builder, Newlons Grocery, Clarksville Schwinn and Fitness, Marshall Auto Parts, Dawn Durbin D.D.S.,Mike’s Paint and Body, Mallory Ignition, Ford Racing and Lucas Oil.

When not in the driver’s seat, Kimmel II attends the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. He recently signed as an instructor at the Richard Petty Driving School.

After qualifying 10th for his first stock car race, Timmy Hill piloted his Rick Ware Racing Chevy to the front and battled among the top ten all afternoon at the tricky Salem (IN) Speedway in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA 200.

“We knew Timmy had a lot of talent but he truly impressed us with his patience and how he set up passes”, stated Rick Ware.

With just fifty laps remaining, Hill was sitting in the fifth position and was turning lap times equal to the leader.

“I was just buying some time until the last twenty laps. We knew there would be some cautions near the finish of the race but never expected this”, claimed Hill.

Hill was passing the RCR #31 of Tim George Jr, on the inside down the backstretch, who was twelve laps down at the time, when he got a bump on the right rear corner and sent the youngster on a 120mph skid into the turn three wall, ending the rookies impressive run.

Timmy Hill

“I’m really proud of the team for giving me a car that could qualify in the top ten and race in the top five. What happened with the #31 (George Jr.) was uncalled for, and I hate it for the team. They put a lot of work into this car, and now, it’s destroyed,” Hill commented after the race.

Hill was unharmed, and looking past the ending, it was a great weekend for the 17-year-old. He logged valuable seat time and proved that his talents clearly translate into full-bodied stock cars.

“The good news is this was only my first stock car race, not my last. I learned a lot this weekend that will carry over to Iowa in a few months. This was just the first step in what I hope is a long road,” said Hill.

Steve Arpin, driver of the no. 55 Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet went on to prove and showcase himself as a driver earning his first career ARCA Racing Series victory on Sunday afternoon.

“This car was awesome from the drop of the green flag. These guys work ridiculous hours days in and days out and they do an awesome job preparing these racecars. It’s not just the 55 team that won this race; it’s the 15, 25 and 55. All the guys at Venturini, everyone, did an awesome job,” said Arpin after getting out of the car in Victory Lane, “Venturini Motorsports gives their drivers great equipment and presents us with great opportunities. That is how this team got this win!”

Steve Arpin entered the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 presented by Appliancezone.com tied for second in the ARCA Racing points and hoped to leave Salem, Indiana on top of the points board. And he did. Steve and Justin Marks are now tied for leading the 2010 ARCA Racing points.

Before the green flag dropped, Steve Arpin told the entire Venturini Motorsports team, “I’ll see you in Victory Lane.” And he did. Arpin went on to lead twice for 138 laps of the 200-lap race.

Starting on the outside pole, Arpin quickly took the lead from pole sitter Max Gresham. Arpin continued to lead laps 1-80 before pitting under caution at lap 81. The no. 55 Venturini Motorsports crew had perfect pit stops and spot-on pit strategy all day long, allowing Arpin to maintain good track position and race his way to the front. Throughout most of the race, Arpin was battling for lead against strong competitors Joey Coulter and Patrick Shelter.

The half-mile, high-banked speedway, covered in dust and asphalt chunks is known for being tough on drivers and equipment. But this was no concern to the racecar driver that originated from dirt racing. After the race, Steve Arpin talked about battling for the lead at the end of the race with competitor Patrick Shelter, who is a dirt racer alike.

“Patrick and I are both dirt racers and at the end of the race, this is kind of the only race on the whole series that’s more like a dirt track. The two dirt track drivers were out front. I just love racing Patrick, it was a blast. We got together and little bit down the backstretch and it was just awesome.”

It was an emotional victory for both Steve Arpin and owner Billy Venturini. Venturini scored his first and only career ARCA win at Salem Speedway in 2006 and returned to Salem Speedway with Steve Arpin and won his first ARCA race as a car owner.

“This is where I got my first win, and it was so special,” said Billy Venturini. “Steve is like a brother. I just love him. He has been an awesome addition to this team. I thank God every day that he is a part of this program and to give him his first win was almost as emotional as my first win here.”

As Steve Arpin pulled into victory lane, the entire Venturini Motorsports team awaited him to celebrate. Ecstatic about win, the team drenched Arpin in water and Gatorade as he climbed out of his car.

“I tell you what, this the most incredible feeling in the world,” said Arpin with the biggest smile. “This race track is incredible. It was just a blast to drive around this place. This is the place I wanted to win the most. It’s just wild, the fans are right on top of you. It’s just a rush driving around this place! Billy won here, and now I’ve won here!”

The series regular has shown very well at the .555 high-banked track in the past and did just that, driving his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, RaceFanRadio.com, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA 200 on Sunday.

“We had a great opening to the race weekend here at Salem,” commented Coulter. “Right off the bat my guys unloaded this hotrod and we were fastest in practice and qualified third. Harold (Holly) and all of my crew worked so hard leading up to this race and I was not about to let them down.”

Using the weekends only practice session, Coulter would wheel his car around the track with a fast time of 17.411 seconds at 114.755 MPH Saturday morning. Shortly after the session ended, qualifying began, seeing Coulter go out 25th among the 34 cars present for the weekend. He would blister off a lap of 17.306 seconds at 115.451 MPH, placing him third for Sunday’s big race.

“Salem is an abusive track that demands a lot from drivers,” said Coulter Motorsports Crew Chief Harold Holly. “Joey did a tremendous job giving feedback and wheeling it around this place.”

The field was set and the green flag would wave over the 34-car field Sunday afternoon at Salem Speedway. Coulter in his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, RaceFanRadio.com, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet quickly got to work charging his way to the front. By lap nine he would find himself in second in an intense battle for the lead. A quickie caution on lap 14 allowed Coulter to radio Crew Chief Harold Holly to tell him the car was “good, but hurting on exit with forward drive.” Holly took notes for when the team would make their first pit stop.

A long green flag run from lap 22-50 would see a heated battle between Coulter and the leader. Running nose to tail and often door to door, the two drivers put on a great show for the fans as they battled for the lead. On lap 50 another yellow flag was waved over the field, where Coulter would tell his crew that the car was “loose off of turn four and running a little hot.” Holly elected to stay out one more cycle, while several cars behind them opted to pit.

Coulter would once again find himself in an intense battle for the lead, swapping spots on the track back and forth with the leader, until cars with fresher Hoosier tires would pass them both on lap 72 and put Coulter in the fourth position.

A big wreck in turn one would see ARCA throw another caution at lap 79. Coulter radioed in that the car was “running hot still but was great through the center but missing forward bite.” Holly would call the Miami Springs, FL native down pit road for four fresh Hoosier tires, a tank fuel of Sunoco gas and a wedge adjustment. The crew would also pull some tape off the grill to combat the heated motor.

Shortly after pulling off pit road, while still under caution, Coulter would tell Holly that the car was still overheating and returned to pit road. The team quickly removed more tape and sent him back out on track to catch the green flag in the 14th position.

The field would restart on lap 86 where Coulter would only need 10 laps to find himself back inside of the top-10 in the eighth spot. Another caution on lap 104 saw a car directly in front of Coulter cut across his nose, luckily causing no damage. On the restart, running eighth, Coulter would once again waste no time as he picked off cars left and right, this time needing only nine laps to find himself in the second position once again. Shortly thereafter Coulter powered his No. 16 Darrell Gwynn Foundation, RaceFanRadio.com, Rip It Energy Fuel Chevrolet past the first place car to take the lead on lap 119.

Coulter would call down to the pits to let his crew know that he “wasn’t pushing the car at all when going through the traffic and the car was handling good.” He would hold the lead until lap 143 where fresher tires would once again help his competitors take the lead. He would pit under caution on lap 146 while running second, for four tires, fuel and a small air pressure adjustment. Coulter would rejoin the field in eleventh, but quickly made work of the green flag to work his way to seventh.

While passing for sixth, his competitor cut down across his nose, sending both cars into the wall. Coulter would bring his car down pit road to fix damage and get tires and would restart 12th on lap 169, one lap down. He would quickly earn the lucky dog, putting him back on the lead lap in the 10th spot. He would work his way back up to eighth before he got caught up with another car while passing them for position. Coulter would limp his heavily damaged car home 14th five laps off the pace.

Joey Coulter

“We had an awesome day going here at Salem and it is unfortunate that we got caught up in those accidents,” commented Coulter. “We had the car to beat and my guys worked their tails off today. I am proud of them and know we will get them all next time. I want to thank my parents and sponsors for making all of this happen.”

Make sure to catch Joey and his No. 16 team in action next week for the Rattlesnake 150 at Texas Motor Speedway. The green flag drops Friday, April 16, 2010 at 6:30PM CST. You can catch all the action LIVE on SPEED TV.

(April 12, 2010)- Brandon McReynolds’ debut in the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards was spoiled by radiator trouble that led to engine problems on lap 64 at Salem Speedway.

The Eddie Sharp Racing No. 6 team looked forward to the race after a solid showing in practice and qualifying. McReynolds completed his first laps at Salem Speedway early Saturday afternoon during practice, finishing 10th quickest with a best time of 17.715 seconds and speed of 112.786. Later Saturday afternoon, McReynolds qualified in the 14th position.

The presenting sponsor of the race, ApplianceZone.com, announced prior to the green flag that, in addition to sponsoring the No. 26 entry, they would provide sponsorship for McReynolds’ car, as well as for the No. 17.

When the green flag dropped on the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 presented by ApplianceZone.com, McReynolds was ready to charge to the front. Eddie Sharp, team owner, also held the role of spotter for the 18-year-old driver.

A yellow flag waved on lap one after a stack up of cars caused debris on the track , and the No. 6 sustained minor damages to the left front fender from the debris. McReynolds continued to work hard through the field, reaching the 13th position by lap 9.

McReynolds and ESR teammate Craig Goess worked together in an effort to get through traffic. “In my first ARCA Racing Series start, I learned a lot from my teammate Craig Goess,” said McReynolds. “I rode behind him for quite a few laps until he let me pass on the outside, and I fell in line. He had a great day finishing second, and I was happy to learn from him this weekend.”

The No. 6 came into pit on lap 52 under yellow, but a pit incident caused causing ARCA officials to send McReynolds to the back of the lead-lap pack.

Both crew chief and spotter encouraged McReynolds to have patience and focus on passing cars one at a time. “After the pit stop, we had to drop to the back,” McReynolds explained. “A caution came out soon after, and we started marching our way towards the front, like I predicted we would.”

On lap 64, McReynolds’ bad luck continued. “We got up into the No. 30 car of Terry Jones,” said McReynolds. “I couldn’t get past, and Eddie kept telling me to be patient as he continued to hold us up. He started to spin off turn two, and I got into him.”

He immediately radioed that he could feel there was something wrong with the motor, as his crew chief told him to bring the No. 6 into the pits. After a quick inspection, the ESR crew determined that the car was beyond repair with a hole in the radiator and the engine overheated.

“It was disappointing to have to come in that early,” said McReynolds. “I definitely think we had a top-three car, and I wish we could have seen how far our car would have gone. Overall, I am so happy with the whole experience, and I think all our expectations were exceeded during the laps I ran. I am so thankful to Eddie and my crew for their hard work this weekend.”

McReynolds finished the race in 26th place, completing only 64 laps. His next ARCA Racing Series race will be the Talladega ARCA 250 at Talladega Superspeedway on April 23rd.

It was the first Auto Racing Club of America career start for the 16-year-old Georgia driver and the solid effort came on the heels of Gresham’s first career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East at South Boston Speedway a week ago.

“Winning the pole was great, it was one heck of a lap,” said Gresham, who grabbed the pole blistering the rough and tumble Salem oval with a lap of 17.266 seconds (115.719 mph) on Saturday. “It’s a lap I don’t want to make again. I drove it in really hard and I drove it hard off the corner. I was fun, but like I said, I don’t think I want to do that again for awhile”

At the drop of the green flag Sunday, Gresham settled into third place allowing Steve Arpin and Joey Coulter to battle for the top spot over the first 50 laps. Gresham stayed on track during a Lap 54 caution as sixth on back came in for tires and fuel.

Without fresh rubber, Gresham slid back in the field to eighth after the restart before another caution, this time on Lap 78, had him heading to the pits for service. There, quick work on a two-tire pit stop by his Gresham Motorsports team kept the Woodward Academy High School junior student among the leaders as he roared off in sixth on the Lap 83 restart.

Gresham continued to run comfortably in the Top-10 as the race again went yellow at Lap 98, just short of the half-way mark in the 200-circuit event.

“It was hard to get going with all the cautions,” said Gresham. “On some of the long runs, you could get in a groove. I just tried to stay smooth and keep the tires under the car for later in the race.”

Gresham was 10th as the field again rumbled back to green-flag conditions on Lap 103. With just 14 cars still on the lead lap, the young driver battled with Ali Owens, Bryan Silas, Timmy Hill and Frank Kimmel to stay in contention for a Top-10 finish. Out of tires and falling fast in the running order, Gresham got the break he needed when the caution flew on Lap 129 allowing him to come to the pits for fresh rubber.

“We really faded after the two-tire pit stop,” said Gresham. “I just burned them off and we didn’t have any tires left. Fortunately we got a caution right when we needed it.”

Now 13th and the final car on the lead lap on the restart, Gresham quickly hustled his way back into the Top-10 and was eighth when another caution, this one on Lap 148, again slowed the field.

After a lengthy clean up, Gresham was back at speed as the field took the green flag with just 40 laps remaining. Gresham then had a close call as he narrowly missed a spin in front of him on Lap 167.

“Man, that was close,” Gresham stated. “I still don’t know how I got through that one. I slammed on the brakes, got the car straight, and then slammed on the brakes again. It was crazy.”

The cautions kept on coming over the final 25 laps as the field slowed several times for spins and accidents. At the end, Gresham didn’t have enough for the win, but after capturing the pole and coming home sixth in his first ARCA effort, it felt just as good as a victory.

“It’s definitely a win for our team,” said Gresham. “The finish and winning the pole are a huge morale booster for everyone. I think the next time we show up for an ARCA race, they will know we mean business.”
