(Sept. 21, 2010) – Continuing a tradition of innovation and fabulous firsts, Speedway Motorsports Inc. (NYSE: TRK) Chairman Bruton Smith and Charlotte Motor Speedway officials announced a partnership with Panasonic to revolutionize the fan experience at sporting events with the creation of the world’s largest high-definition video board.

Panasonic will also become the founding sponsor of the video board and a Speedway Motorsports Inc. alliance partner around its broad portfolio of advanced technologies.

At an incredible length of 200 feet wide, standing 80 feet tall and weighing 165,000 pounds, the video board will cover an expansive 16,000 square feet and be located between Turns 2 and 3 along the backstretch of the legendary superspeedway. Fans seated throughout the frontstretch from Turn 4 to Turn 1 will have clear viewing angles of the gigantic board that will feature 720P high-definition visuals illuminated by more than nine million light emitting diode, or LED, lamps.

“Charlotte Motor Speedway continually establishes itself as a pioneer when it comes to one-of-a-kind, over-the-top facility enhancements that change the game for motorsports fans,” said Smith. “Fans will see this like a gigantic television that will elevate the NASCAR experience in ways they have never dreamed. It will give them a view of the on-track action on the world’s largest high-definition screen. The fans will feel closer than ever before to the cars and stars of NASCAR at each event.”

In addition to the live race coverage, the video board will provide fans with interactive entertainment, continuous leaderboard updates, sponsor information and instant replays.

“Panasonic is proud of our efforts to bring this spectacular new high-definition scoreboard to Charlotte Motor Speedway,” said James Doyle, president, Panasonic Enterprise Solutions Company. “This amazing example of industry-leading technology and engineering speaks volumes about our strong relationship with Charlotte Motor Speedway as we work together to bring innovative concepts to life and enhance the fan experience.

“Panasonic worked closely with Charlotte Motor Speedway to design the end-to-end system from the control room to this massive HD video board,” Doyle added. “We are confident that the new Panasonic HD video board system will leave fans awestruck and make their entire Charlotte Motor Speedway experience that much more enjoyable and memorable. ”

Construction will begin on the video board following the Oct. 13-16 Bank of America 500 Week at Charlotte Motor Speedway and is scheduled to be complete by April, 2011.

Panasonic is now the exclusive audio/video provider of Charlotte Motor Speedway with category exclusivity inclusive of camera, camcorder, television, display and Blu-ray.

The creation of the video board is the latest in a tradition of trend-setting innovations and fabulous firsts at Charlotte Motor Speedway during its 51-year history. Other notable firsts include:

- 600-Mile Race. In 1960, Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first and only track to host a 600-mile NASCAR-sanctioned event. Now known as the Coca-Cola 600, the race is still the longest and one of the most prestigious on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule.

- Spectacular Pre-Race Shows. Starting in 1977, Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first track to host elaborate pre-race shows. Through the years, fans have enjoyed a reenactment of the Battle of Grenada; a three-ring circus; numerous world-record automobile stunts and concerts; a 5,000 member marching band and an assemblage of 5,000 firefighters honoring the heroes of Sept. 11, 2001.

- Luxury Condominiums. Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations in 1984 when it released 40 condominiums for sale high above Turn 1. Twelve additional condominiums were added in 1990.

- The Speedway Club. Opened in 1988, The Speedway Club was the first exclusive members-only private club to be constructed at a motorsports facility. The club features restaurant seating for 240 people overlooking the frontstretch and expansive ballroom and boardroom banquet facilities. Members enjoy a champagne toast with the race winner after each Coca-Cola 600 and Bank of America 500.

- Night Racing. Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first modern speedway to offer night racing in 1992 after installing a $1.7-million, 1,200-fixture permanent lighting system. The system was different from any installed at other tracks in that it used a system of adjustable mirrors surrounding the inside of the track to moderate the light aimed at the drivers.

(August 30, 2010) – Target Chip Ganassi Racing (TCGR) had another strong finish at the Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 300 Saturday night with Dario Franchitti scoring his third victory of the season and Target Teammate Scott Dixon finishing eighth.

The win gave Chip Ganassi Race Teams, Inc. its 16th victory of 2010, as Ganassi drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas claimed the team’s 15th victory at Montreal earlier in the day to win their eighth GRAND-AM Rolex Series race. The GRAND-AM victory broke the previous Chip Ganassi Racing Teams Inc. record of 14 wins in a single season from 2009.

Franchitti lined up second on the grid and ran in the top-five for the first half of the race. After a lap 173 caution, the team pitted Franchitti from seventh and grabbed the lead after a strategic fuel-only pit stop. The call proved to be a winner as the team would lead every remaining lap of the 200-lap race.

Dixon lined-up 15th on the grid and passed his way into the top-five by just lap 65. He ran in the top-five throughout the better part of the race until a lapped car forced him into contact with the No.11 car. He would re-group to finish eighth.

NOTES

- – The win was TCGR’s second at Chicagoland (2006), 39th win in the IZOD IndyCar Series and 79th in Indy car racing.

- The win was the 131st for Chip Ganassi Racing Teams, Inc.

- This was Franchitti’s third victory of the season (Indianapolis, Mid-Ohio).

- Franchitti’s first-place finish marked his sixth consecutive top-three of 2010.

- The win was Dario Franchitti’s 26th in Indy car racing and his 16th in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

- It was Franchitti’s second win at Chicagoland. Starting from the pole he led 10 laps en route to victory in 2007.

- The win as TCGR’s 16th at 1.5-mile tracks (Chicagoland: 2006, 2010; Homestead: 1996, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009; Kansas: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010; Kentucky: 2008; Motegi: 2002, 2009; Texas: 2002).

- Of TCGR’s 39 wins in the IZOD IndyCar Series, 27 have come on ovals (69%).

- Since 2008, TCGR has won 16 of the last 26 oval events run in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

- The eighth-place finish marked Dixon’s seventh top-five finish in eight races at Chicagoland.

With the finish, Franchitti remains second in the championship with 505 points, gaining 36 points on leader Will Power (just 23 points out of the top spot). Dixon remains third in the championship with 443points, 85 points out of the top spot.

Up next for Team Target is Round 15 of the IZOD IndyCar Series at Kentucky Speedway for the Kentucky 300, September 4 (8:00 p.m. ET on VERSUS).

TCGR Quoteboard:

Dario Franchitti: “It’s good to have Floyd (Ganassi) back at the track. He hasn’t been here for a while but as usual, he brought us luck tonight. We were struggling tonight with the Breathe Right car really in traffic as we got a little further back there. A lot of crazy stuff going on. I was just more comfortable up high. That last stop was the key to this race. Chris Simmons, turns out he was the one that made the call. We had a lot of faith in the Firestone tires. He said leave the tires on and got us out front. Dan Wheldon, he was just pushing me all the time, just helping me. I was giving him room at the bottom. We were working together very, very well there. So between him and Scott Dixon pushing me around all night. This Team Target is amazing.”

About Target Chip Ganassi Racing (TCGR)

Target Chip Ganassi Racing is the reigning Indianapolis 500 Winner and two-time reigning IZOD IndyCar Series Champion. Chip Ganassi created his own one-car IndyCar team in 1990 and established a partnership with sponsor, Target.
“We’re inclined to change our starting time,” Belskus said. “We do want to try to make it happen.”

Belskus said ABC, which owns television rights to the 500, has been consulted and hasn’t indicated it would oppose a switch to 11 a.m. from the current 1 p.m.

The idea gained momentum in May when Bruton Smith, CEO of Speedway Motorsports Inc., proposed putting up a $20 million bonus for any driver who could win both races on the same day.

Smith and Indy Racing League CEO Randy Bernard were asked about the status of their negotiations last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway opened its first weekend of the season and a lot of fireworks erupted, with most of them off the track but enough on the track to keep people talking. The NASCAR Modifieds put on their usual thriller of a race and Ryan Newman outfoxed Ted Christopher in a great shootout in the final ten laps, as Christopher took the lead twice but Newman repassed, then snookered Terrible Ted in a manner reminiscent of the last-lap play-action lead change that cost Teddy a Loudon win a few years back.

Once that wrapped up Kyle Busch cleaned house in the BGN 200 while a mediocre IRL driver crashed with Morgan Shepherd early in the going and whined about it afterward.

Then on Sunday a prolonged period dominated by Kasey Kahne and Jeff Burton turned upside down on some late yellows, several wrecks, and a showdown betwen Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch that loudly proclaimed that the recent rut for the four-time champ is over. The late-race scraps left Juan Montoya with another wrecked racecar and AJ Allmendinger upset with Ryan Newman – it also leaves Newman looking two-faced after his haughty holier-than-thou rip on fans at Talladega last autumn – while illustrating the continuing rise of a potential new star for NASCAR aligned with the sport’s greatest star in the owner of Allmendinger’s #43.

————————-

But amid the racing the track itself became a source of controversy after Bruton Smith threatened to pull the June date after a spat with local police, a spat that illustrates what a former board of selectman member angrilly noted is Bruton Smith’s chronic refusal to engage in negotiation and compromise, a drastic difference from former owner Bob Bahre.

Simultaneously with the spat with local police, the track announced its new IRL date next season, a move more than a few saw as setting the table for replacing a Loudon date with IRL so that Bruton could feed his fantasy of Winston Cup at Kentucky. The notion of moving a New Hampshire date doesn’t carry much plausibility as NASCAR wants no part of cutting back in one of its stronger market areas, but given how Bruton has worked, it isn’t something that will go away for awhile.

And it begs the question that has been asked before but which so often requires asking again – why does Bruton do these things?

———————-

One of the unfortunate casualties of recent internal issues is Fred Neergaard, long the Director of Communications at NHMS but no longer in the track’s employ. It is difficult to imagine a more gracious and more pleasant official of any sporting venue than Fred. Whether you are a decades-long veteran of racing or a raw Internet rookie, Fred in the years I’ve gone to Loudon could never have been a better ambassador of the sport, of his speedway, of the area. If you made a mistake in a press conference he’d let you know in a way that allowed you to correct the mistake quietly. If you had a question, Fred gave you honest answers – in the years I dealt with him he was always honest and his answers were always credible.

Wherever he goes next, I hope it’s in racing, because he’s the best New Hampshire ever had.

(Sunday, June 27, 2010) - The “Fastest Race in the World” will return to the Granite State in 2011 when the IZOD Indy Car Series returns to New Hampshire Motor Speedway officials announced today. The race will be held on July 30, 2011.

“We’re pleased to restore an Indy car short oval to the schedule to further increase our diversity of venues,” said Randy Bernard, chief executive officer of the Indy Racing League, sanctioning body of the IZOD IndyCar Series. “As evident last weekend in Iowa, our cars produce tremendous racing on short ovals. Additionally, New Hampshire Motor Speedway is strategically located in the Northeast, which fills a geographical gap in our schedule. I have to thank Bruton Smith and Jerry Gappens for giving us a great opportunity here at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.”

Bernard was joined by Speedway Motorsports Inc., founder and chief executive officer O. Bruton Smith, New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch and Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway in making the official announcement.

Two-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti demonstrated the more than 200 mph speed that New Hampshire Motor Speedway will see with a three-lap run during pre-race ceremonies.

“This is three year deal in the making,” said Jerry Gappens executive vice president and general manager of the speedway. “As an Indiana native and a fan of open-wheeled racing, I strongly believe that the people of New Hampshire will embrace this new breed of speed much like they do NASCAR.”

New Hampshire Motor Speedway played host to one of the five Indy Racing League events in its inaugural year (Aug. 8, 1996) with Scott Sharp taking the checkered flag. It also was the site of Robbie Buhl’s first victory (Aug. 17, 1997) and Tony Stewart’s third (June 28, 1998). CART sanctioned races on the variably-banked (2 to 7 degrees) oval from 1992 to ’95.

One of the IZOD IndyCar Series most popular driver, Danica Patrick, was at NHMS this weekend behind the wheel of a stock car. She showed her enthusiasm at the series adding another oval to the Indy schedule.

” I think it is very positive addition to our schedule, especially because it is in the northeast,” she said.

New Hampshire International Speedway, which opened in 1990, was purchased in 2008 by Smith from Bob and Gary Bahre and renamed New Hampshire Motor Speedway. It is about an hour north of Boston and, according to the most recent census, more than 18 million people live within two hours of the picturesque venue.

Tickets for the IZOD IndyCar Series at New Hampshire Motor Speedway go on sale Monday June 28, 2010. Prices range from $35-$75.

The 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series season continues July 4 with the Camping World Grand Prix at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. The race will be telecast live in High Definition at 3:30 p.m. (ET) by ABC. The race will air live on the IMS Radio Network, XM channel 145 and Sirius channel 211. The race also will be carried on www.indycar.com. The 2010 Firestone Indy Lights season continues with the Corning 100 on July 4 at the Watkins Glen International.

But the next time the IndyCar Series star returns to the Granite State she will be accompanied by her colleagues from the Indy Racing League, according to a league source who yesterday confirmed the series will return to Loudon, N.H., July 31, 2011, ending the IRL’s 12-year exile from one of its flagship tracks.

Randy Bernard, the IRL’s new chief executive officer, could not be reached for comment yesterday, but a league source indicated an announcement would be made Sunday in conjunction with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at NHMS, the Lenox Industrial Tools 301. The IRL will be adding another major market to its 17-race schedule; it announced earlier this year a race in Baltimore in 2011.

Jerry Gappens, NHMS executive vice president and general manager, said yesterday he and track owner Bruton Smith, chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc., had talked with Bernard about bringing the open-wheel series back to New Hampshire for the first time since 1998.

“I’m pleased through the new leadership that Randy’s providing he’s opened the dialogue, and I think we’re going to bring it home,’’ Gappens said. “Right now, we’re trying to cross the t’s and dot the i’s, but we feel really positive about it. It should add a third major weekend of racing to our schedule.’’

(ISC) and Speedway Motorsports Inc. (SMI) tracks, as well as Dover International Speedway.

“Our initial year was an unqualified success,” said Jim Wassell, chief marketing officer for ServiceMaster Clean. “We are looking forward to building on the awareness, relationships and momentum established in 2009. Our partnership with ISC, SMI and Dover has truly exceeded our expectations.”

In 2009, there were 305 cautions during the 36-race NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular season. When there was a yellow flag at participating tracks (Pocono and Indianapolis are not participants in the program), the familiar ServiceMaster Clean yellow vehicles were dispatched to clean and restore the track.

As it was during the inaugural season, the second year of a multi-year agreement is not limited to the ServiceMaster Clean caution periods on the track. Included is coverage on the Motor Racing Network and Performance Racing Network, hospitality events for franchise owners and guests, the right to create and sell promotional merchandise and a host of other marketing opportunities designed to generate consistent visibility.

In racing, the yellow flag means track clean-up, and restoration must be done quickly and professionally in order to get back to racing. In homes and businesses across North America, a yellow ServiceMaster Clean van means cleaning and restoration is being done quickly and professionally by America’s number one cleaning team.

With more than 4,500 franchise locations around the world, ServiceMaster Clean serves customers through a global network of franchises that provide janitorial services, commercial carpet cleaning, hard surface floor care, residential carpet and upholstery cleaning, and disaster restoration services. The company has been a market leader for more than 60 years.
ARCA RE/MAX Series Event Preview

Event: Prairie Meadows 200 – July 11, 2009

Venue: Iowa Speedway – Newton, Iowa

This weekend’s RCR Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS at Michigan International Speedway … Austin Dillon will pilot Chassis No. 167 in this weekend’s Prairie Meadows 200. This chassis is a former No. 29 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series racer that has been updated to fit 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series specifications.

Fourth ARCA Start … Dillon will make his fourth career RE/MAX Series start at Iowa this weekend. Most recently, the Lewisville, N.C., native finished second in June’s Racing for Wildlife 200 at Michigan International Raceway after starting 36th as rain cancelled qualifying and the field was set by the ARCA Series rulebook.

Collective RE/MAX Stats … In three career ARCA RE/MAX Series starts, Dillon has finished seventh (May 2008 – Rockingham Speedway), 15th (May 2009 – Kentucky Speedway), and second (June 2009 – Michigan). The 19-year-old driver boasts a 5.7 finishing average and has completed all laps contested (511) in those starts.

Third Time’s a Charm … The 2008 NASCAR Camping World Series East Rookie of the Year will make his third career start at Iowa Speedway. In his two previous starts (which occurred in the NCWSE) at the seven-eighths-mile tri-oval, Dillon has earned one pole, two top-10 finishes and has completed 397 of 400 laps (99.2 percent) contested.

Testing 1, 2, 3 … Dillon & Co. tested their No. 31 Chevrolet last week at Iowa in preparation for this weekend’s Prairie Meadows 200.

AUSTIN DILLON Quote:

“I’m excited to be heading back to Iowa for my third time. My two previous starts were in the East Series cars, which are fairly different than the ARCA cars. There are a bunch of things you can do differently in terms of the set-up in those two series, but the fact that I’ve raced there has definitely taught me a lot how the track conditions changes over the course of a long run. It’s a great facility and we had a great test last week. Our Chevrolet was pretty fast and we’re confident that it will carry over to the race.”

DAN DEERINGHOFF (crew chief) Quote:

“Our test last week taught us a lot about how the ARCA cars handle during long runs. Our No. 31 Chevrolet showed a lot of speed and definitely built up our team’s confidence. We are hoping to have a strong qualifying effort in order to stay up front all day and contend for the win at the end.”

“David Poole was a special person and a friend and I miss him already. This is a big loss for the coverage of motorsports. He was truly one of the
nation’s best and he always wrote what he believed. Whether you agreed with him or not, he made us all think and that’s what the best writers do. He cared about what he did and had a passion for his work. It came through in what he wrote every day. David didn’t always write what was the popular opinion and I have a lot of respect for that. To equal what he did, the Charlotte Observer will probably have to hire three people. The world of racing is going to miss him for a long, long time.”
