No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 25 of 25 — Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway

2009 CHAMPION FACTS: Last week at Phoenix International Raceway, Hornaday clinched the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship. Hornaday became the second driver in Truck Series history to clinch the championship prior to the last race of the year (Greg Biffle clinched at Phoenix in 2000). The 51year old also became the oldest champion in any of NASCAR’s touring series. He now joins Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon as only the fourth driver in NASCAR history to win four championships in one of NASCAR’s elite divisions.

250th START: Ron Hornaday is arguably the most recognizable driver in the Truck Series. When he climbs behind the wheel of the No. 33 Longhorn Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) Chevrolet this weekend at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway, he will make his 250th career Truck Series start.

Hornaday’s Truck Series career began during the series inaugural year in 1995 and his historic journey has led to 45 career wins, 23 career poles, and over 8,500 laps led.

MAGIC NUMBER: DeLana Harvick left Phoenix 60 points ahead of Billy Ballew and the No. 51 truck for the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Owner’s championship. Hornaday’s magic number this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway is ninth. No matter what Kyle Busch does if the No. 33 team can finish in the ninth position they will win the Owner’s championship for Kevin and DeLana Harvick.

RECORD SEASON: KHI has had a monumental season. Year-to-date in 2009 the Truck Series program has recorded eight wins, five poles, 22 top-five and 28 top-10 finishes.

Ron Hornaday

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

HOMESTEAD-MIAMI SPEEDWAY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY CONSISTENT TRACK FOR YOU, HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO CLOSE OUT THE YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE?

“Every time I go to the race track, I go with the frame of mind to win the race. It is very important to finish well during the last race of the year. It helps carry momentum throughout the entire off season and helps with the confidence and team morale as you prepare for a new year.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A FOUR-TIME TRUCK SERIES CHAMPION?

“It’s really amazing. I can’t believe all that we have accomplished this year, but we aren’t done yet, we still have to go out this weekend and run well so we can bring home the Owner’s championship for Kevin and DeLana (Harvick). I’m very proud of this team and the entire KHI organization for standing behind me and giving me such awesome equipment to drive.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will take chassis No.029 to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the 2009 season finale. Chassis No. 029 was last on track for the inaugural event at Iowa Speedway where Hornaday drove from the 15th starting position to record a fourth-place finish. Chassis No. 029 is the same truck that Hornaday drove to victory lane earlier in 2009 at Kentucky Speedway and Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last week at Phoenix International Raceway, Hornaday and the No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) team drove to a fourth-place finish. With the finish, Hornaday was crowned the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion. His KHI teammate and boss Kevin Harvick drove the No. 4 Longhorn Chevrolet to his second Truck Series victory of 2009.

Kevin Harvick

No. 4 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado

Team Race Preview

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race 24 of 25 – Phoenix International Raceway

WINNING COMBINATION: Heading to Phoenix International Raceway (PIR), Kevin Harvick looks to defend his truck series win from one year ago, this time behind the wheel of the No. 4 Longhorn Chevy Silverado.

In nine previous starts at the track, Harvick has recorded three wins, all for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI), four top-five and four top-10 finishes.

In his four previous starts for KHI in the Truck Series, Harvick has started no worse than 10th, recorded three wins and his worst finish is fifth. In those four races, he has a starting average of 4.75, an average finish of 2.0, has led 234 laps and completed 100 percent of attempted laps (652 of 652).

100 STRONG: This weekend when Kevin Harvick climbs behind the wheel of the No. 4 Longhorn Chevy Silverado, he will make his 100th career start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. In 99 previous starts, Harvick has accumulated four wins (three at PIR and all for KHI), 29 top-five and 42 top-10 finishes. In addition, he has completed 16, 236 laps and led 934. Harvick’s first career start in the series came at Mesa Marin (Calif.) on October 15, 1995, driving for his father, Mike Harvick.

ELITE GROUP: Harvick became the first driver at PIR to win a race in all three of NASCAR’s elite series by scoring his first Truck Series win in 2002, followed by a sweep in 2006 of the Nationwide and Cup Series events. Kyle Busch has also completed this task at PIR.

BEFORE THE RACE: QUOTES WITH DRIVER KEVIN HARVICK:

Returning to Phoenix International Raceway as the defending Truck Series race winner, what are you expectations?

“I always seem to do well at Phoenix, so I’m excited to see what we can do with the Longhorn Chevy this weekend. I run well in the Truck Series and every time I climb in the truck, I expect to be in contention at the end to win. Our truck program has really peaked and that makes it a lot of fun to race and see what we can do on the track. Hopefully at the end of the night, I can defend my win from last year and get the No. 4 team their first win of the season.”

Why do you have so much success at Phoenix International Raceway?

“Phoenix is one of those places that I grew up racing on. I raced a lot in the Southwest Tour, Winston West and Truck Series races at Phoenix. I have learned the characteristics of the race track and the little things that you can do when your car is not handling perfect. I like the flat race tracks. Racing on Phoenix my entire career has also translated into flat track success on the entire circuit.”

Does Phoenix fall into the same category as a short track like Martinsville or Richmond?

“I don’t really see Phoenix as a short track. Even though places like Phoenix and New Hampshire are only a mile, they both have a lot of room to race. Phoenix is always a fun race track. There are always at least two lanes, and sometimes even more, to pass.”

CHASSIS HISTORY:

This weekend the No. 4 Longhorn team will unload chassis No. 039 at Phoenix International Raceway for KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick. This is a brand-new chassis to the KHI stables and this weekend will mark its race debut.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP:

Ricky Carmichael made his last scheduled start of the season for KHI at Texas Motor Speedway behind the wheel of the No. 4 Monster Energy Chevy Silverado. Starting the race from the ninth position, Carmichael lost the handling of the truck at the beginning of the race and fell back to the 16th spot. Working on the truck throughout the race and gaining valuable experience on the track, Carmichael was able to move through the field and finish the race in the 12th spot.

No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 18 of 25 — Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway

BACK-TO-BACK: Ron Hornaday looks to become the first back-to-back Truck Series winner at Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway if he should win the Copart 200. Ted Musgrave became the first repeat winner at the track going to victory lane in 2001 and 2005.

SMALL WORLD: How times have changed. Eleven years ago at Gateway International Raceway Hornaday was battling rival Rick Carelli for the inaugural win. Hornaday fell 0.351 seconds short as Carelli cruised to his second career Truck Series victory. These days Hornaday hears Carelli’s calming voice over the radio each and every race weekend, as Carelli now serves as spotter for the No. 33 Longhorn team as well as General Manager for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI).

“Gateway is a tough little place,” Carelli said. “You really gain your speed in turns three and four. I remember the race in ’98 well; I moved (Greg) Biffle out of the way and had a great race with Hornaday. It was cool to go back there last year and finally see Hornaday get a win.”

IN THE LOOP: Hornaday leads several of NASCAR’s Loop Data statistical categories at Gateway International Raceway. Over the last four races at Gateway Hornaday leads the driver rating category which takes into account wins, finishes,top-15 finishes, average running position while on lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, most laps led and lead-lap finishes. For any given race the maximum points that can be earned is 150. Hornaday has a driver rating of 116.1 at Gateway, despite having an average finish of 12th and has finishes of 30th, 15th, second and first respectively. Hornaday has also led the most laps (207) at Gateway over the last four races.

HOME TRACK FOR REN:

Rick Ren, crew chief for the KHI’s No. 33 Longhorn team, hopes to make this weekend’s trip to Gateway International Raceway a happy homecoming. Ren is a native of Danville, Illinois, approximately 211 miles northeast of Madison, Illinois, where the race track is located.

Ron Hornaday

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT RACING AT GATEWAY?

“Gateway is very different from other tracks we race on because of the corners. Turns one and two are tight and banked and three and four are wide and flat. We had a good day at Gateway last year; we started second and led the most laps in route to my first win at the track. We need to do the same thing this year. I am really looking forward to heading back there to defend the title.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will take chassis No. 027 to Gateway International Raceway. Chassis No. 027 has taken to the track three times thus far in 2009. Hornaday raced this truck at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway where he finished second to KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick. The No. 33 team also went to victory lane with this truck at The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile and Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park this year.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Hornaday and the No. 33 team finished fourth in the inaugural race at Iowa Speedway. The team struggled all weekend with an ill-handling truck. Starting from the 15th position, Hornaday was able to utilize restarts and work his way up through the field to battle the leaders and score his 11th top-five finish of 2009. With only eight races remaining Hornaday holds a 225 point lead over Matt Crafton.

No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 17 of 25 — Iowa Speedway

FILL IN: These days Ron Hornaday is usually referred to as a veteran however this weekend at Iowa Speedway he might be considered a rookie. Hornaday has made a few laps at the 0.875-mile facility, but not in a Camping World Truck Series machine. Hornaday’s boss and Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) co-owner Kevin Harvick drove a Camping World East/West Series showdown race at Iowa Speedway back in 2007. All East and West division cars raced together that day. Hornaday was able to make four practice laps in the car before Harvick flew in and assumed the ride. Harvick would dominate the race, capturing the pole and leading 108 laps, however he finished second to Joey Logano. Logano won the overall race and was credited with winning for the East division. Harvick went to victory lane that day for the West Series.

“I really liked the track, said Hornaday. When I first started out they had the car really loose. Everyone says Kevin likes to drive a loose car but even he would have struggled in that one! From what I could tell in that car the track is very unique and will be really fun to drive in a truck.”

SHORT-TRACK SUCCESS: Hornaday currently holds the record for most short-track victories in the Truck Series. He has visited victory lane 20 times in his career on tracks less than one mile in length. In 2009, he has recorded two short-track victories at Memphis Motorsports Park and O’Reilly Raceway Park (ORP).

MEET RON HORNADAY IN IOWA: Hornaday will make a special appearance at Casey’s General Stores on Thursday September 3rd. Hornaday and KHI teammate Ricky Carmichael will be signing autographs at the Casey’s in Newton located at 3104 1st Ave East from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Ron Hornaday

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IOWA SPEEDWAY?

“To me it has the characteristics of Richmond. The trucks used to put on a great show there and I always enjoyed racing there. It looks like Richmond, but every track has its own style. From what I understanding talking with Kevin (Harvick) and Cale (Gale) who drove the Nationwide car there earlier this year the track is developing some bumps that you really have to get over in order to have your vehicle handling well.”

HOW DO YOU APPROACH A NEW TRACK?

“I really ask a lot of questions. I try and figure out what track it is close too and sort of go off that. You just have to go in there with an open mind and feel it out the first few laps of practice. NASCAR has made a really good schedule with four practice sessions on Friday, so that should give us enough time to figure out what line to run, what the truck needs, who is going to be fast, and what adjustments we will need to make.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will take chassis No. 029 to Iowa Speedway. Chassis 029 made its debut earlier this season at Kentucky Speedway where Hornaday went to victory lane for the first time at that track in his career and scored the No. 33 team’s fourth win of the season. The team then brought chassis No. 029 to Nashville Superspeedway where it again found victory lane at a track Hornaday had yet to win at. Hornaday made history in Nashville joining Richard Petty and Bobby Allison to win five consecutive races.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last week at the inaugural race at Chicagoland Speedway Hornaday and the No. 33 team recorded an 11th-place finish. The team was caught one lap down to the leaders on a round of green-flag pit stops. A caution with six laps remaining gave Hornaday the “lucky dog” award placing him back on the lead lap. Hornaday was able to gain two positions late in the race to record the team’s 14th top-15 finish of 2009. Hornaday remains the Truck Series point’s leader by 220 points over Matt Crafton with nine races remaining.

No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 14 of 25 — Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway

UNPRECENDENTED STREAK: Last week at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, Ron Hornaday made Truck Series history winning four races in a row. Hornaday’s streak began at The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile in June, followed by wins at Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park, Kentucky Speedway and O’Reilly Raceway Park (ORP). Hornaday will go for an unprecedented five wins in a row this weekend at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway.

ALL-TIME CREW CHIEF: With last week’s win at ORP, Rick Ren is now tied with Dennis Conner as the all-time winningest crew chief in Truck Series history. Ren has tallied a total of 26 wins with five different drivers, three of which include Kevin Harvick Inc.’s very own Rick Carelli (KHI General Manager), Andy Houston (spotter for the No. 4 Truck team) and driver of the No. 33, Ron Hornaday.

LAP LEADER: Hornaday has now led 633 laps in 2009. Hornaday has led at least one lap in 12 of 13 races this season and he has led a lap in the last 11 consecutive race events. ORP marked the 10th race this season Hornaday has been awarded the Wix Lap Leader Award.

ONE OF THE FEW: Nashville Superspeedway is one of only eight tracks on the current Truck Series circuit where Hornaday has yet to tally a win. The others include: Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Auto Club Speedway, Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, Chicagoland Speedway, Iowa Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

PASS TIME: Hornaday will be a featured guest on the SPEED TV show Pass Time, the ultimate drag racing game show. Hornaday will compete against fellow Truck Series driver Mike Skinner and Pass Time regular Ken “The House Herring” to determine who has what it takes to guess the fastest of the fast from the new zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C. Hornaday’s episode is scheduled to air August 5th, at 9 p.m., EST.

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

CAN YOU PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE WINNING FOUR RACES IN A ROW?

“No I really can’t. I’m not sure how we did it. These last two wins have been unbelievable. I’m just so lucky to be able to drive for owners like Kevin and DeLana (Harvick). They have put all the right people in the right places. Rick Ren (crew chief) and the guys have done such a great job with these trucks. I am very fortunate to be in the position I am in right now. I am having more fun than I ever have.”

HOW IMPORTANT WOULD IT BE TO YOU TO FINALLY BREAK THROUGH AND GET A WIN AT NASHVILLE?

“I have been so close to winning at Nashville. In 2007, we had the thing won but ended up missing it by just a little and finishing second. I went by Sam Bass’s studio a few weeks ago to sign some prints for Longhorn, and he showed me his guitar collection. It was very impressive and I told him that I really wanted to win one of his specially designed Gibson guitars. I really like this track but have yet to be able to get in the right position to head to victory lane.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will bring chassis No.029 to Nashville Superspeedway. Chassis 029 was last on track at Kentucky Speedway where Hornaday and the No. 33 team recorded their fourth victory of 2009.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last week at O’Reilly Raceway Park, Hornaday and the No. 33 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) team made Truck Series history by winning their fourth race in a row, their fifth victory in 2009. The win marked Hornaday’s 44th career victory and extended his points lead to 174 points over Mike Skinner.

No. 33 Longhorn Chevrolet Silverado Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 12 of 25 — Kentucky Speedway

SEASON-TO-DATE: At the approximate half-way point in the Truck Series schedule, Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado team head to Kentucky Speedway with the Truck Series points lead. Hornaday also leads all other drivers in the following NASCAR Loop Data statistical categories: highest average starting position of 3.0, highest number of fastest laps ran with 278, and the number one driver rating of 121.9 out of 150. Hornaday is a close second to Matt Crafton in highest average finishing position. Crafton edges out Hornaday with an average finish of 7.1 to Hornaday’s 7.2.

LAP LEADER: In the last two Truck Series events at The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile and Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park, Ron Hornaday and the No. 33 team have led 355 of the 401 laps of competition. In 2009, Hornaday has led more laps than any other Truck Series driver with a total of 537 laps.

LONGHORN COUNTRY: On his way to Kentucky Speedway, Hornaday will be stopping by the Swedish Match Manufacturing facility located in Owensboro, Kentucky. This plant produces all varieties of the Longhorn Moist Snuff brand, as well as other Swedish Match tobacco products. Hornaday is slated to tour the facility and work on the line as they make cans of Longhorn, as well as meet with Swedish Match employees and sign autographs.

WHAT IS IT LIKE RACING AT KENTUCKY SPEEDWAY?

“Kentucky is another one of those 1.5-mile tracks and with the way our program has been this year, we have a chance to be really good there. It is a fast race track with two racing grooves. We won this race in 2006 and I would like to win there again, especially since nobody else has won there twice. Mark Smith (engine builder) has been giving us really good engines and it makes it so much fun for me to drive these trucks. Rick Ren (crew chief) and the guys will be working really hard to get the truck where it needs to be and I just have to go out there and do my part.”

AFTER TWO DOMINATING WEEKS, DO YOU FEEL MORE CONFIDENT HEADING INTO KENTUCKY?

“As competitive as the Truck Series is, you try not to be over confident going into any track. Last year at Kentucky, my teammate Jack Sprague had a truck that was faster than the field by three tenths of a second, only to have a spark plug fail on lap three. I just take one race at a time. This No. 33 team unloads where we think we need to be, and then we adjust. That is why we have been so successful, we have the ability to make the right changes so the truck is good with the conditions we are dealt. Kentucky tends to be a very heat-sensitive track so the team that can adjust to the conditions is the team that will be successful. ”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will bring chassis No.029 to Kentucky Speedway. Chassis 029 is a brand-new chassis with no laps on the race track, but has been tested in the wind tunnel and produced promising aerodynamic statistics.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Two weeks ago at Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park, Hornaday and the No. 33 team visited victory lane for the third time in 2009. Hornaday once again dominated the event leading 175 of 201 laps on his way to his 42nd career Truck Series victory. With the win, Hornaday and the No. 33 team extend their points lead to 76 markers over second-place Matt Crafton.

No. 33 Longhorn Truck Team Race Preview

NASCAR Truck Series Race 11 of 25 — Memphis (Tenn.) Motorsports Park

GOING ALL THE WAY: Ron Hornaday’s success at Memphis Motorsports Park (MMP) is evident. In his last six races, Hornaday has recorded two wins, completed each of the 1,208 laps of competition and has led a lap in every race at MMP except 2006.

LAP LEADER: According to NASCAR’s Loop Data Statistics, in his four previous races at MMP, Hornaday has led more laps than any other driver. Hornaday has paced the filed for 274 of the last 478 laps.

DEFENDING WINNER: Hornaday comes into MMP as the defending race winner. In 2008, Hornaday dominated this event leading 139 of the 204 laps.

20 AND COUNTING: With Hornaday’s win last weekend at The Milwaukee (Wisc.) Mile, Kevin Harvick Inc. has now recorded 20 Truck Series victories as a company.

RICK CARELLI TO BE INDCUTED INTO THE WEST COAST STOCK CAR HALL OF FAME: On July 3, 2009, Rick Carelli will be inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame at Irwindale Speedway in California. As a driver Carelli earned the 1991 NASCAR Southwest Touring Champion and the 1993 NASCAR Camping World Series West Champion titles as well as raced in the NASCAR Truck Series.

At the inaugural Truck Series race at MMP in 1999, Carelli blew a left-front tire, careening into the wall in turns three and four. The impact resulted in a basil skull fracture and dissected artery. Narrowly escaping death, Carelli missed the remainder of the 1999 Truck Series season, but returned to MMP one year later to dominate the ARCA race only to finish second with a last-lap pass.

These days Carelli is still at the track, just in a different role as General Manager for Kevin Harvick Incorporated and as spotter for three time Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday.

Ron Hornaday

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

WHAT MAKES MEMPHIS UNIQUE COMPARED TO OTHER SHORT TRACKS?

“Memphis tends to be very heat sensitive and it is typically very hot there. You never know what kind of track you are going to get. We anticipate a slick race surface, but if you get an overcast day your strategy might change. During last year’s race I think we learned a lot of things we can use to make good adjustments to our truck this year.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT TRACKS THAT HAVE SPECIALTY TROPHIES?

“I think it’s cool when a track goes the extra mile to make a trophy special. I now have an Elvis trophy on my shelf. When I won here in 1998 they had not gotten him yet. Lindy and I are big Elvis fans so adding that to my collection last year was really cool. It is always fun to show people who come over to the house and it helps the win stick out in your mind. This year they have a special prize for the pole. It’s a neat incentive. Any time you can go to victory lane though is special no matter what the trophy looks like.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 Longhorn team will bring chassis No.027 to Memphis Motorsports Park. This is the same truck that went to victory lane last weekend at The Milwaukee Mile.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Following a day of rain on Friday, Hornaday and the No. 33 team dominated the Copart 200 at The Milwaukee Mile on Saturday. Hornaday led all but 20 of the 200 laps, in route to his 41st career victory. With the win Hornaday reassumed the points lead by 36 markers over Matt Crafton.
