CHARLOTTE, NC (May 27, 2010) – With the Coke 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway looming, and NASCAR activities in and around the Charlotte-area ramping up, Richard Petty kicked things off on Tuesday night by hosting the second-annual “King’s Cup – Karting for a Cause” presented by Harris Teeter at Victory Lane Karting in Charlotte, NC.

And in the process, “The King” raised an astonishing $120,000 for the Paralyzed Veterans of America (“PVA”), doubling last year’s total amount raised of $60,000.

The night – which also included an autograph session with Petty and his drivers Kasey Kahne, AJ Allmendinger, Paul Menard and Elliott Sadler, a silent auction, a concert by the band Smokin’ and several raffles – was highlights by a 26-team go-karting event, made up of NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers, team, sponsors and others involved in the racing community.

When all was said and done and three hours worth of racing was complete, it was the Stanley Tools team, led by Sprint Cup Series driver Menard, that took home the coveted King’s Cup trophy and a prize package donated by, ironically, Stanley Tools.  Menard was joined on the race winning team by Ross Boner, Cliff Daniels, Cody Robnett, Mike Smith and Tim Brown.

Stanley used exceptional pit strategy and a long run by a couple of its team members to earn a one-lap victory over the Hermie & Elliott Sadler Foundation team in the one-hour long main event.

By virtue of their second-place finish, the Hermie & Elliott Sadler Foundation team received gift cards from Best Buy and the Richard Petty Driving Experience, while Best Buy Team 1, led by Allmendinger, finished third and won gift cards from Victory Lane Karting Center.

The Hermie & Elliott Sadler Foundation team and Stanley Tools team each also won their respective heat races during the evening.

In addition to the Petty family of drivers, Kurt Busch, Brad Kesolowski, Sam Hornish Jr., David Ragan and Joey Logano all came out to participate and join in the fun, as well as upcoming racers Coleman Pressley and Brandon McReynolds.

About Paralyzed Veterans of America

Sixty-four years ago, Paralyzed Veterans of America was founded by a band of spinal cord injured service members who returned home from World War II to a grateful nation, but also to a world with few solutions to the challenges they faced. These veterans from the “Greatest Generation” made a decision not just to live, but to live with dignity as contributors to society. They created an organization dedicated to veterans service, medical research and civil rights for people with disabilities. And for more than six decades, Paralyzed Veterans of America and its 34 chapters have been working to create an America where all veterans and people with disabilities, and their families, have everything they need to thrive.
