Justin Lofton Inc.

Justin Lofton isn’t alone during his return to Eddie Sharp Racing (ESR). Not only will he have the familiar face of team owner Eddie Sharp leading the way, but he’ll also have the know-how in new crew chief Dan Bormann. Bormann, who served as the car chief on Lofton’s ARCA Racing Series entry en route to the 2009 championship, has been named crew chief on Lofton’s Camping World Truck Series Toyota Tundra.

“I am really looking forward to working with Justin again. We work well together and we are great friends. I know what he wants in a setup, and we already have the communication down,” Bormann said. “I am really excited about the opportunity and I can’t thank Eddie and Justin enough.”

With the addition of Bormann, Trip Bruce will now serve as ESR’s competition director. He will also take the reigns on pending development programs within the team.

“Dan was very vocal in helping this team be as successful as we were in 2009. To be able to bring him and Justin back together again speaks volumes for what we built. Justin and I both know he will get the job done. He is a genuine leader,” added team owner Sharp. “With Dan joining Trip, this adds even more depth to our company. Trip is a huge asset. ESR can only continue to grow from here with him in a position of overseeing the program.”

Though this marks 33-year-old Bormann’s first go around as crew chief, he has a plethora of racing experience to his credit. A 13 year motorsports veteran, Bormann got his start at local short tracks in his native California. After learning the ropes in the K&N Pro Series West, he decided to move east, and relocated to North Carolina in 2005.

He padded his resume by working with veteran drivers Mike Skinner, Tony Raines, and Jimmy Spencer before moving to Clay Andrews Racing in 2006. Later that year, the team earned the race win in Kentucky with driver David Gilliland. Gilliland promptly made the move to the Sprint Cup Series, and CAR dissolved. Bormann then also made the move to Cup competition with Roush Fenway Racing. After a short stint at RFR, Bormann landed at Chip Ganassi Racing, where he remained for three seasons. During that time he made numerous trips to victory lane in the Nationwide Series while working with drivers Reed Sorenson and Juan Pablo Montoya.

In early 2009 Bormann moved to Eddie Sharp Racing where he spent the season as car chief on Lofton’s ARCA entry. Together, they earned six race wins, 15 top-fives and 19 top-10s en route to the title.

Following the championship season in 2009, Bormann transitioned with Lofton to Camping World Truck Series competition, serving as his truck chief at Red Horse Racing. They earned a season best finish of third with four top-five and eight top-10 finishes through the year.

Bormann started the 2011 season at Turner Motorsports, where he served as truck chief for Ricky Carmichael until the call came that Lofton was returning to ESR.

“It was a no-brainer for me and it really means a lot that Eddie, Justin, and Justin’s Dad Bob believe in me enough to ask me to lead this team. I am really looking forward to Kentucky and racing together again,” Bormann added.

“I trust every decision Dan makes on these trucks. It’s been a long time coming and I know he’s the right man for the job,” Lofton said.

I thought I had spun our UPS car out. It was loose and I took it a little easy through turn one and two. It did what I needed it to. It was pretty good. It was pretty comfortable when we unloaded. We made quite a few adjustments for this qualifying lap. We lost a little momentum coming to the green. The speed we gave up was from the start finish line.”

DO YOU ANTICIPATE OTHER DRIVERS HAVING TO GIVE A LITTLE IN ONE AND TWO? “Yeah, you are carrying so much speed getting into one and two. You are 204 or 205 and don’t have a lot of banking. If you miss it just a little bit you slip and slide and move around. Those turns are the most critical two corners here. I feel like it was ugly but we got through there. I am happy with the lap. Hopefully it holds up for a top-10.”

CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Aflac Ford (Qualified 18th) – “We just needed one more run in practice. We made wholesale changes and took a guess at it. If we had one more stab at it I think we could have been way faster. The car will be good in race trim for sure but we will just have to battle through the field.”

TRAVIS KVAPIL – No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford (Qualified 36th) – “I am disappointed. It is the same speed we ran from the first lap on the track today. We thought we made improvements to get more speed for qualifying but we were too free. I could never get back to the gas hard like I needed. As long as these straight-aways are you pay the price on lap time. We will keep working on it. The shortened practice makes it a little tough but we will have time tomorrow and I am optimistic for Sunday.”

MARCOS AMBROSE – No. 9 DeWalt Ford (Qualified 13th) “We went back to what we did at Vegas a little bit. We gained a little because of that but I don’t think it will be good enough. We are out here early and the track is cooling off so there will be some fast times out there. I am proud of my team, very proud of these guys for believing in me.”

TREVOR BAYNE – No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford (Qualified 27th) – “I was a little disappointed with it but it is tough going from Nationwide to Cup cars. We see that a lot. They are all going to pack in front of us. Truex just ran a 6.02 and we ran a 6.03. It is that tight all the time. That little bobble messes you up. We were tight in the center and I hit the seam wrong and we lost some speed there. I think we could have run a 40 or 50. We weren’t a pole run for sure but we could have beaten a couple of those guys. We will see where we end up. I don’t know where it will be, maybe 25th or something but we can race and I can’t wait. This place is so weird. I hate practice and qualifying because you have to run the bottom but I love the race because you love the top all day. I can’t wait to get to race time.”

TONY RAINES – No. 37 Race Fuel Energy Ford (Qualified 42nd) – “We struggled some. We didn’t have much practice today because of the rain and we had some issues with our rear bar that had broken in practice and we weren’t aware of it. We took a shot in the dark and hooked it up for qualifying and the car drove horrible. We have a lot of work to do tomorrow. We have a good group of guys though and we will get there. That short practice and mechanical failure hurt us today and you have days like that. We will rebound though.”

I am so proud of our Stanley team. They took a huge risk to put me on. I had a chance to make it in the sport or get kicked out pretty quick with the change I made for 2011. For Richard Petty to give me the chance like he has and for us to deliver in our third race with a good lap time is great. I am really excited about it. We are in the hunt for the pole and you can’t ask for much more than that.”

GREG BIFFLE – 3M Post-It Ford Fusion (Qualified 4th) – “Hopefully we end up with the top three here. We have our cars running good. It shows how hard these guys have worked back at the shop. I feel bad because my car had more speed than that and I missed it just a hair. That is why we have qualifying and the race too. We will wait and see what happens.”

CARL EDWARDS – Scotts/Kellogg’s Ford Fusion (Qualified 3rd) – “That lap was fast. I couldn’t tell exactly how fast it was while I was out there because we picked up so much. Right now we are seeing speeds that no one could touch in practice. I didn’t really know what it was going to do. I guess Matt is out there right now and I hate to say this with Marcos standing right there but I hope he blows the doors off both of us because six-one thousandths is going to be hard for me to go to sleep missing by that much.”

DAVID RAGAN – UPS Ford Fusion (Qualified 43rd) - “I got too greedy. It was a great lap going and I got back to the throttle real early and just a little too early. I was back 100 percent and used up a little too much race track coming out of two and got into the sand and trash on top and couldn’t hang on. I am glad we didn’t hit anything. We have a great car and I wish we could have finished that lap. It was going to be fast. We were going to be on the front row with that lap but I just didn’t do what I needed to do to get back around. We will have a lot of work on Sunday but we will be fine.

MATT KENSETH – Crown Royal Ford Fusion (Qualified 1st) – “It feels great. Qualifying is not my strong suit but I knew we had a really fast car today when we did our last qualifying run. Honestly this is the most nervous as I have been before qualifying in probably five years at least because I knew we had a shot at the pole and I knew last week we really messed up. I didn’t want to mess up a fast car today, so I was really happy with that.”

TONY RAINES – Race Fuel Energy Ford Fusion (Qualified 42nd) – “We have been struggling in one and two. The track is bumpier than it was last year and we haven’t found the package yet. We get through 3 and 4 okay. When we get into one and two we bottom out and are losing a bunch of time. We tried something a little different in the right front for qualifying but it still did it. We will work on it for Sunday.”

TRAVIS KVAPIL – Long John Silver’s Ford Fusion (Qualified 40th) – “We have been quite a ways off from where we need to be. We changed the set up 180 degrees to be closer to our teammate David Gilliland because they had speed on practice. The car drove 70-percent better than where we were. We have a ways to go to get it where it needs for Sunday. Huge strides though right there. I’m happy with the gains we are making but we still have a ways to go.”

DAVID GILLILAND – Taco Bell Ford Fusion (Qualified 35th) – “We hit the splitter really hard right there and upset the car. It threw our lap off from where w needed to be. We need to work on our car to get it off the race track. It is the biggest thing for us that we need to work on. We gotta get it up off the track.”

TREVOR BAYNE – Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion (Qualified 16th) – “I ran out of room of the corners there. I think with another 20 feet we could have had stayed in the throttle and had a faster time but that’s the case for everybody. We got tight and couldn’t stay in it. It’s a big pickup from practice. I know that probably won’t be the fastest but they did a good job with this Ford Motorcraft/Quick Lane Fusion getting it ready for qualifying. We have a lot of fast Ford teammates coming up later and hopefully they do good. I think this should be a decent spot for us which is good.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER – Best Buy Ford Fusion (Qualified 7th) – “The car has been really good so far. It’s no secret that this isn’t my best track. It felt really good in race trim but struggled a bit in practice because we were a little tight. We made the car a little better but we were still a tad tight there. You never know with this new qualifying format because all the fast guys are coming up behind you. Tar should put us on the edge of the top 15 which isn’t too bad here. We should be able to see the front.

NOT BAD FOR A TRACK THAT HAS ALWAYS GIVEN YOU PROBLEMS. “You always want to be better but I think we have a good race car. I have gotten a lot more confident on this race track just in today. I knew we would coMe here with a lot better stuff than we have ever had. The car is fast. This motor is screaming. There are a lot of fast Fords to go. Hopefully Ford gets the pole.”

(March 1, 2011) – Perseverance coupled with strong green lap runs helped Kyle Busch and the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team finish second and take home two post-race awards Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Busch laid down the race’s fastest lap on his way to the front of the field late to capture the Goodyear Gatorback Belts Fastest Lap Award, while crew chief Dave Rogers made strategic calls to win his second consecutive DirecTV Crew Chief of the Race Award.

The awards are part of the NASCAR Prize Money and Decal Program, also referred to as the contingency program, which provides teams prize money and weekly awards based on performance in several categories.

“I’m proud of the job our team did in Phoenix this past week,” said Rogers. “Our guys at the shop and at the track work hard to prepare the car each and every week and obviously we have a driver in Kyle that is able to deliver on the track. We appreciate DirecTV’s recognition of what is really a team effort.”

Early in the race, as cautions hit, the No. 18 team was forced to regroup after scraping the wall on Lap 41 and getting involved in a near day-ending wreck with Carl Edwards.

“It was a rough beginning there for a while for a lot of guys and we were able to persevere and work through it and work on our car and get most out of the day,” Busch said. “We came back strong and we had a really good car there on the long runs, and we were kind of running guys down.”

With the second place finish, Kyle Busch took the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points lead as the series heads to Busch’s home track Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Kobalt Tools 400 on Sunday, March 6 (FOX, 3 PM ET).

Official winners of this week’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Prize Money & Decal Program special awards include:

· COORS LIGHT POLE AWARD: Carl Edwards (137.279 mph, 26.224 secs.)
· DIRECTV CREW CHIEF OF THE RACE AWARD: Dave Rogers (crew chief for Kyle Busch)
· GOODYEAR GATORBACK BELTS FASTEST LAP AWARD: Kyle Busch (133.008, Lap 293)

About the NASCAR Prize Money & Decal Program
The NASCAR Prize Money & Decal Program, commonly referred to as the contingency program, is administered by the NASCAR Automotive Group. The program strives to build strong relationships with high-quality, performance-driven brands that are leaders in their respective categories and award money to NASCAR teams via per-race and year-end postings. Competitors become eligible for awards money by displaying partner decals on the front fender of their race vehicles and, in some instances, use of a sponsor’s product. National series contingency sponsors will contribute over $8.4 million to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2011.

TRAVIS KVAPIL – No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford Fusion (Qualified 40th) – “We struggled yesterday. We had some brake trouble we fought for the most part and we hit the wall as a result of that. It seemed like we were kind of in a hole all day, but the car is driving OK and we’re locked in the show. I think our teammate, David Gilliland, has a pretty good car, so we’ll see what we’ve got here and what he’s got so then we can compare notes and make some changes yet for tomorrow.”

TREVOR BAYNE – No. 21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion (Qualified 33rd) – “I know I needed more. When we ran that .70 I said it’s gonna take a .20 or .30 to be on the pole, so that wasn’t what we needed exactly. I just didn’t have enough grip. I couldn’t get much more out of the tire out there. I think it’s gonna be good on a long run, but for qualifying it just wasn’t there. We’ll get it, plus I’m learning, too. This is my first time jumping back and forth between Nationwide and Cup since Texas, and they’re totally different cars and I’ve got a lot to learn with both.”

BASED ON YESTERDAY WERE YOU MORE CONSERVATIVE WITH THIS LAP? “Yeah, you have to be until you get in the race. Once it comes race time you’ve got that car anyway, so you’re good. I had to be a little bit conservative, but I was still pushing it. I was still shaking when I got out of the car because I thought I pushed it, but I think I got into turn one a little too low and couldn’t carry any speed.”

DAVID GILLILAND – No. 34 Taco Bell Ford Fusion (Qualified 30th) – “I think it’s good. We’re right there behind Jimmie Johnson and that is a step up from where we were last year. I feel like our car is excellent in race trim. We didn’t do a lot of qualifying stuff because we didn’t have the tires to really do that, but I’m excited. The car in race trim was phenomenal. If you look at the company we’re around, that’s good. We’ll go from there and work on it for Sunday.”

MARCOS AMBROSE – No. 9 Stanley Ford Fusion (Qualified 29th) – “I’m a little disappointed. That’s my first time really qualifying for this team and we’re all new and learning each other. I just left a little bit out there.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER – No. 43 Valvoline Ford Fusion (Qualified 15th) – “I’m not sure where that’s gonna end up. That’s probably gonna 17th or 18th from the looks of it, so that’s not very good. It’s disappointing from yesterday. We had a decent car and brushed the wall, so you go out there and you’re not really sure. The guys did a good job. The driver wasn’t that good.”

CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Aflac Ford Fusion (Qualified 1st) – “We’ve got a fast race car and these Goodyear tires come in the second lap. They’re fastest on the second lap, so it would mean so much to be on the pole for the Subway Fresh Fit 500 in the Subway Ford. That would be huge. They’ve already given me a lot of free sandwiches this weekend and we’d love to give them a trophy. That would be cool.”

GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 3M Ford Fusion (Qualified 10th) – “I feel pretty good. I should have pushed the gas down sooner in three and four. The car had so much grip. I don’t know why, but I was just a little bit nervous and didn’t want to make a mistake. I probably just waited too long over there – a tenth of a second. That was my fault, but what’s exciting about it is we have a really good car and a really fast car.”

DAVID RAGAN – No. 6 UPS Ford Fusion (Qualified 11th) – “It’s a small pick-up. Anytime you’re up there in the top three or four during practice you think you’ve got a legitimate shot at the pole and another tenth we would have been right there. I’m real happy with our UPS Ford for the race. I think we’ve got a real solid car and anytime you can qualify in the top 15, you’ve got a real good shot to get a good pit stall and get a good start. That’s good, but you’re always hungry for more.”

Beginning with the Drive 4 COPD 300 in Daytona, McClure returns to the Chevrolet family and will pilot TriStar Impalas for a full Nationwide Series season.

The Hefty(r) brand, one of the longest-running partners in the Nationwide Series, will continue its relationship with McClure for a sixth consecutive season by serving as primary sponsor in all 34 scheduled events.

McClure, a 31-year-old native of Chilhowie, VA will be competing in his fifth full season of NNS competition. The Virginia driver, who finished a career best finish of 17th in NNS Driver points in 2009, has 137 NNS starts and three Sprint Cup Series Starts to his credit, with a best finish of 15th and 26th, respectively.

TriStar Motorsports began as a Sprint Cup Series team in the late 1980′s before evolving into Pro Motor Engines, a thriving independent engine building company providing horsepower to teams in each of NASCAR’s top three series. The team returned to Nationwide Series competition in 2010 with drivers Tony Raines, Jason Keller and Jeff Green, scoring a Top 5, and 3 Top 10 finishes.

The team’s car number, as well as other program details will be announced at a later date.

Eric McClure Quotes:

(What are your expectations for the 2011 season and being with a new team?)

“I’m looking forward to joining TriStar Motorsports in 2011. They have a great nucleus in place and as a multi-car team this past year was able to accomplish quite a bit of success and grow their race team. I think that’s a testament to the quality drivers and personnel they had, and certainly Mark Smith, who is a racer in every sense of the word. He reminds me a lot of my father and his brothers when they built their team up over the years.

Our responsibilities at TMI are first to find the best home for our sponsorship partners, and secondly, the best place for me to grow as a driver, and I think this presents a great opportunity for our program to be maximized on all fronts. I feel like the final two New Car races this season were my best events in the last half of the year as far as overall performance, so I think we all hope to have a solid, competitive season as the series utilizes the New Car full-time. We have some other things we are working on that, hopefully, we can announce soon that I think are pretty cool and will be beneficial to me and to TriStar’s organization.

(On Hefty(r) brand returning for its sixth consecutive season)

“I, as well as everyone at TMI, am just so appreciative of our relationship with the Hefty(r) brand. This will be our fifth full-time season together, our sixth year overall, and I’m just so privileged that they continue to support our efforts in the NNS. When we started our partnership I never dreamed it would grow to be one of the longest partnerships in our series.”

“We owe a special thanks to the race fans that, regardless of whether or not I’m their favorite driver, continue to support the Hefty(r) brand and their quality products at their nearest retailer. We strive so hard to create a positive image for the brand and their customers, and it’s evident they’ve been pleased with the result. We’ve developed a great off-track promotion we will announce soon that will reward some of those fans and we look forward to having the opportunity to give something back to the racing community.”

Mark Smith, owner of TriStar Motorsports quotes:

“I am excited to have Eric McClure and the Hefty(r) brand join our TriStar organization. I believe we have been able to assemble a dynamic group of individuals that will result in a competitive upcoming year of racing. Eric has proven to be a solid competitor and is focused on the same goals that we have here at TriStar. So, with a company like Hefty(r) behind Eric and TriStar, I am anxious to see what we can accomplish in the 2011 Nationwide
Series season now that we have joined forces.”

Eric McClure confirmed to Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody that he will move from Team Rensi Racing to Tri-Star Motorsports for the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series, with sponsorship from Hefty. “It does look like that’s where we’re going to go,” said McClure. “We are going to move over to TriStar Motorsports.

Things have kind of skyrocketed in the last 24 hours, and it looks like we’re going to be able to get the deal done.” He said conversations are underway with 2010 Tri-Star drivers Jason Keller and Tony Raines about ways for them to remain involved, adding, “It’s a great opportunity for me to go over there and learn from two veterans.”

……And

Sirius NASCAR Radio’s Sirius Speedway with Dave Moody has learned that Mark Martin will run a limited schedule in both the Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series’ in 2011 with Turner Motorsports. Reliable sources say that Martin will run an undetermined number of Nationwide and Truck races with Turner next season, with specific dates to be determined once sponsorship and scheduling conflicts are determined.

Turner Motorsports is actively seeking sponsorship for the effort, but a spokesperson for the team denied any knowledge of the deal when contacted earlier today. Martin’s representatives also declined to comment on the story. Martin is the all-time NASCAR Nationwide Series win leader with 48 career victories, just five more than a fast-closing Busch. He also has seven career Truck Series wins

(November 9, 2010) - The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule couldn’t have been designed any better for Tony Raines. The short-track specialist will run his final race of the season for Front Row Motorsports this weekend at his favorite track – Phoenix (Ariz.) International Raceway. He looks to end his 2010 Cup run on a high note with a strong performance in the No. 34 A&W All American Food Ford in Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500.

The event will be Raines’ ninth Sprint Cup start at the one-mile oval. His best Cup finish at the track is 14th. He also has earned one top-10, two top-15 and seven top-20 finishes at Phoenix in the Nationwide Series.

Comments from A&W All American Food Team Driver Tony Raines on Phoenix International Raceway and Approach to End of Season:

“It’s a tie between Phoenix and Richmond for my favorite racetrack, and I think I lean a little more toward Phoenix. I was there at the very first Cup race. That’s gives away some of my age, doesn’t it? It’s just a unique track. It’s got short-track tendencies in the corners but it’s a little over a mile so it’s got some speed. Race fans have always been very supportive of the track, too.

“It’s usually nice to go out there about now because it’s starting to cool off a little at home. So you get a little bit of sun, like an Indian Summer, before the year ends. And usually there’s only a race or two left after Phoenix, so it’s kind of a high point. You’re almost at the year end, but Phoenix is a good place to cap off the season because it’s a favorite of mine. I’ve had some good qualifying efforts there and also some good races, so I always look forward to going there.

“As you head into the last couple races of the season, you have kind of a mixed mentality. You can see the finish line, so there’s kind of a feeling of relief that you made it through another season and you get to have time off to recharge. But when you’re racing at one of your favorite tracks, like Phoenix is mine, you want to end the year strong. So if you can run well at one of the last few races, then it gives you that perk for the off-season and gets you mentally ready to look forward to next year.

“Phoenix has always been a track that I’ve enjoyed, even when I’ve had a rough day and didn’t run as good as I wanted to. It’s still a fun track to drive. And it’s a good trip. It’s not as far as California, so it’s not as hard getting the team and equipment there and back. I also like the area around Phoenix. Sometimes I’ll get out a day early just to enjoy the scenery.”

About Front Row Motorsports with Yates Racing:

Front Row Motorsports was formed in 2005 by restaurant entrepreneur Bob Jenkins. Since that time the team has entered a car in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series. In 2010, Front Row Motorsports will partner with Ford and Roush/Yates Engines to field a three-car operation based in Statesville, N.C. The team fields the Long John Silver’s Ford driven by Travis Kvapil, the Taco Bell Ford driven by David Gilliland and the A&W All American Food Ford driven by Tony Raines.
(October 19, 2010) - Tony Raines has always liked Martinsville (Va.) Speedway even though, as he says, “you can’t mess up anywhere.” The NASCAR veteran looks to put in a precise performance when he returns to the cockpit of the No. 34 A&W All American Food Ford this weekend for the TUMS Fast Relief 500.

Sunday’s race will be Raines’ first at the 0.526-mile oval since 2008, but he has enjoyed some success at the track known as “the paperclip.” He has seven career Sprint Cup starts at Martinsville with two top-15 finishes, and a top-10 finish in two Camping World Truck Series starts. He’ll get some prep work in on Thursday when the three teams of Front Row Motorsports test at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va.

The Martinsville race will be a special homecoming for Jonathan Salmons, the engine tuner on the A&W Ford. The Bassett, Va., native will represent the team as a TUMS Pit Crew Grand Marshal during the speedway’s pre-race ceremonies on Sunday. Salmons will be among the 43 pit-crew members nominated by their teams to collectively give the command for drivers to start their engines.

Comments from A&W All American Food Team Driver Tony Raines on Martinsville Speedway, the Top 35 and Pit Crew Grand Marshal Jonathan Salmons:

“Why do I like Martinsville? I’m not really sure. I’m crazy, I guess. It’s a pretty simple track – flat and half a mile. A lot of short-track racers grow up running on tracks very similar to Martinsville. The unique part about it, obviously, is the concrete corners. And that’s just a ‘feel’ thing. The field is usually really, really tight there, with only two-tenths (of a second) from the front to the back. So, just getting the car to roll through the center, kind of free, and being able to drive up off the corner is what you need.

“Having had a little bit of success there qualifying when I went there early in my career, it makes it a little bit easier track to tackle for me. But, like I said, it’s very tight from first to last, so you can’t mess up anywhere. It’ll really hurt you on your time. It’s challenging. You really need to get the most out of your car. It’s a heavy braking track. You can’t overbrake, because you’ll slow down too much. And if you underbrake, you’ll miss the corner. You’ll slide right through it or go through the center too fast.

“It’s a real finesse track. You’ve got to really get in there, carry as much speed as you can, but not slip the tires. And then get all the way around the corner, which is fairly simple because you just open the throttle up. But if you’re too loose off, you get wheel spin and hurt your time. And if you’re too tight, you’ll slide your front tires and that’ll hurt your time. It’s a little tricky. It’s not the most difficult track, but it is a tough one.

“With the penalty earlier in the year knocking the No. 38 car out of the top 35, the last four or five weeks have really gone well as far as an entire team effort working on getting that car qualified in and having it run very well in the race. All three teams from Front Row Motorsports have been working extremely well together, with everyone having the same goal in mind, which is to get that car back in the top 35.

“I think it’s great that they’re recognizing the guys on the teams as grand marshals for Martinsville. Like any sport, racing is a team effort. And I can tell you for sure, we definitely could not do what we do without each and every one of these guys. Jonathan (Salmons), the engine tuner, is a great guy and a hard worker and it will be cool to have him go up there and be recognized.”

(September 21, 2010) - Not many people would call concrete “comfortable,” but that’s how Tony Raines feels when he races at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. The driver of the A&W All American Food Ford returns to the scene of his first NASCAR Sprint Cup race in 2002 to wheel the No. 37 Fusion in this weekend’s AAA 400.

Since that first start eight years ago, Raines has run 14 more races at the “Monster Mile” oval, with a best finish of 21st. Sunday’s race will be Raines’ fifth start for Front Row Motorsports in the Cup series this year.

Comments from A&W All American Food Team Driver Tony Raines on Dover International Speedway:

“My first actual Sprint Cup start was at Dover and we had a good car, so it was a good first impression there. Dover is a banked track and it’s concrete, similar to Bristol but larger. I’ve always liked Bristol and I’ve always liked Dover, too. I’ve had some really good races at Dover so, when I go there, I have a little bit of an air of confidence that sometimes you might not have at other tracks.

“I always look forward to going to Dover because I feel at home there. I’m familiar with the track, and I think I know what I’m looking for to run well there. So, I go there with as much confidence as I have anywhere else. I’m definitely looking forward to going there and racing.

“Dover is a concrete track, of course, so it’s got a different feel to it. Concrete is not as forgiving. When you get to the edge of adhesion on concrete, it’s usually gone and there’s no getting it back. Asphalt is a little bit more forgiving. And as the race goes on, the track gets slicker and slicker. Being able to know that and anticipate how the track changes, and the feel you’re looking for, will help you. And like Bristol, the track at Dover is always tight – unless you’re loose and then you spin out. You might think you’re really tight and all of sudden the rear end comes around. It can be a little tricky.

“It’s a track that seems to favor people who have a good feel for being on the edge. Not that you can always race on the edge, but it’s just hard to get used to that feeling. I did get used to it early on, so I always feel comfortable there and enjoy racing there. But I’m not saying it’s easy. When the ‘monster’ bites you, it bites you hard.”
