Race: O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge

Location: Texas Motor Speedway

Richard Childress Racing NASCAR Nationwide Series Race Notes:

RCR’s NASCAR Nationwide Series History at Texas … In 35 previous NNS appearances at Texas Motor Speedway, Richard Childress Racing has acquired four wins, 11 top-five finishes, 21 top-10s and one pole. The organization has led 564 laps at Texas and has completed 90.2 percent of the laps attempted at the 1.5-mile oval (6,099 of 6,760).

Averages … RCR boasts an average start position of 12.7 and an average finish position of 12.9 among all NNS races the organization has contested at Texas.

Harvick’s Track … Each of RCR’s four NNS wins at Texas came with driver Kevin Harvick, who is currently just one win shy of the track’s all-time race win record in NNS competition. Other RCR drivers have fared well in the NNS at Texas as well. In the organization’s last fall appearance at the track in November 2009, Casey Mears posted a second-place finish.

RCR teams have posted top-10 finishes in 10 of the last 13 NNS attempts at Texas. In addition to Mears’ runner-up finish last fall, Jeff Burton finished eighth in April 2009 and Clint Bowyer finished sixth in April 2008.

Catch the Action … Flag-to-flag coverage of the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge will be televised live on Saturday, November 6, beginning at 12 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on ESPN2 and on the Performance Racing Network and Sirius XM Satellite Radio at 12:15 p.m.

Clint Bowyer

No. 21 Zaxby’s Chevrolet Impala

Race Notes and Quotes

This Week’s Zaxby’s Chevrolet at Texas … Clint Bowyer will drive Chassis No. 080 in Saturday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge. Bowyer was running second in this Chevrolet at Dover International Speedway in May when contact with another competitor with just three laps remaining relegated the team to a disappointing 25th-place finish. In addition, John Wes Townley drove this Chevrolet to a career-best 15th-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in February.

Bowyer’s Texas Stats … In nine previous NNS starts at Texas, Bowyer has earned two top-five finishes and five top-10s. His best Texas finish to date of third came in April 2008.

In the Spring … In the Spring NNS race at Texas, Bowyer had a competitive Zaxby’s Chevrolet, and ran in the top five for much of the race, but finished a less-than-desired 35th after a mid-race incident when a right-front tire went down as a result of fender damage from a side-by-side battle for fourth position.

Seven Years Ago … Clint Bowyer made his career-first NNS start at Texas Motor Speedway on April 3, 2004. Since that time, the Emporia, Kans., native has acquired eight wins, 62 top-five finishes, 108 top-10s, eight pole awards and the 2008 NNS Driver’s Championship among 168 series starts.

Stockman Calling the Shots … Danny Stockman will serve as crew chief for the No. 21 Zaxby’s Chevrolet this weekend. Stockman, the fulltime crew chief for Raybestos rookie of the year contender Austin Dillon in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, made his debut as Bowyer’s crew chief in the NNS at Bristol in August. Several members of the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet will join Stockman in Richmond this weekend. This season, Stockman, a 28-year-old California native, has earned race wins in both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (Iowa, Las Vegas) and ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards (Kansas, Rockingham), with drivers Austin Dillon and Ty Dillon.

Zaxby’s Last Hoorah … Saturday’s race marks the last NNS race for Zaxby’s and the RCR NNS program this season. RCR and KHI recently announced a partnership in which KHI will field NNS entries in 2011 with RCR providing chassis, engine and technical support. Since its inception in 2000, RCR’s Nationwide Series program has earned 56 victories and five championships; two overall championships (2001, 2006 with Kevin Harvick), two owners-only titles (2003 with Harvick and Johnny Sauter; 2007 with Jeff Burton and Scott Wimmer), and one driver-only title (2008 with Clint Bowyer).

Double Duty … Following Saturday’s NNS race at Texas, Bowyer will compete in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas in the No. 33 Cheerios / Hamburger Helper Chevrolet.

What are your thoughts on Texas Motor Speedway?

“Speed is more important than handling at Texas. The Nationwide cars carry a lot of speed entering the corners and the key is finding the groove where your car handles the best. That can be tricky during the Nationwide race because Texas is the type of track where additional grooves develop as the weekend progresses. On Sunday, there are more options because the track has been raced on all weekend. I really like Texas. It’s fast, you have got to get the car rolling the centers. You can get too loose there, but I’d definitely prefer a loose car there over a tight one. I’ve finished as high as third but I haven’t won there yet so it would be neat to get that opportunity this weekend. Those cowboy hats they give you in victory lane look pretty neat.”

This was Townley’s career first start at HMS and the solid performance was the 19-year-old rookie’s third consecutive top-25 finish.

Townley was the 48th of 52 drivers to make a qualifying attempt Saturday morning. The Zaxby’s Ford lapped the 1.5-mile south Florida track in 32.798 seconds (164.644 mph), posting the 25th best time of the session and locking the Raybestos Rookie into the field.

Rolling off the starting grid on the inside of row 13, Townley raced competitively inside the top-25 for the opening 80 laps. When the fourth caution flag was waved for debris on lap 81, Townley brought his No. 09 machine down pit road for four Goodyear tires, Sunoco fuel and a chassis adjustment. Townley would exit the pits in the 24th position but would be summoned back down pit road one lap later for a missing lug nut on the left rear tire. When racing resumed on lap 84 Townley was scored in the 33rd position.

Catching up was the name of the game over the next 75 laps. Running 29th, a long green-flag run would came into play for the Zaxby’s Racing crew as they held off bringing the No. 09 machine down pit road with the leaders on lap 145 for green-flag pit stops. When the field cycled through, Townley was sitting in the 25th position, one of the only cars on the track that had not come down pit road for fuel.

However, with laps winding down and fuel running low Townley was about to bring his yellow and blue machine down pit road for the evening’s final stop when the sixth caution flag was displayed for an incident in turn-4. This welcoming opportunity for relief allowed the Zaxby’s team to gain back one of their two laps they had lost early on in the event.

John Wes Townley

Following a phenomenal stop for four tires and fuel the No. 09 pit crew would gain Townley one position on the race track. When racing resumed on lap 162 the Zaxby’s Ford would be scored in the 24th position only one lap down.

Over the next 38 circuits Townley would battle other cars on his lap for a coveted top-25 position. It wasn’t until the closing five laps that Townley leaped up one more spot to bring home a 24th-place finish in the 35th and final race of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series season. Kyle Busch would go on to win the Ford 300 and the championship.

This was the final race for John Wes Townley behind the wheel of the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford Fusion for RAB Racing. In his first full-time season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, Townley amassed six top-20 and 12 top-25 finishes and on the strength of the 19-year-old rookie’s efforts he finished 23rd in the overall driver point standings and seventh in the Raybestos Rookie of the year battle. Townley will move to Richard Childress Racing for the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series season.

The stop, The Monster Mile at Dover International Speedway. After being out of the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford for three weeks Townley got back behind the wheel at what he calls his “favorite track” on the circuit and proved that theory by bringing home an 18th place finish in the Dover 200 on Saturday.

The solid effort was Townley’s best finish at the 1-mile oval and his fourth top-20 finish in 20 starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Additionally, the Watkinsville, GA native closed the gap on 32nd in the 2009 championship owner point standings. The No. 09 entry remains 33rd with 1,838 points; just 57 markers behind 32nd and 434 points outside the top-30.

John Wes Townley

Townley started off the weekend by gracing the top of the speed charts in 8th during the morning practice session on Friday. With confidence in his Zaxby’s Ford, the 19-year-old rookie was able to back up those speeds with a lap time of 23.931 seconds (150.432 mph) on Saturday morning, locking the No. 09 team into the field with an 8th place starting position; a career best start for the team.

As clouds rolled in, the cars rolled off the starting grid for the 200 lap event at the Monster Mile. Townley easily settled into the top-15 during the opening laps of the race and ran competitively inside the top-20 for the first 100-laps of the caution free event. Due to the long green-flag run there were only 11 cars on the lead lap and Townley was scored 2 laps down to race leader, Kyle Busch when the first caution flag was displayed on lap 110 for debris.

Brad Parrott brought the yellow and blue Zaxby’s Ford Fusion down pit road for the second time on lap 112 for four Goodyear Eagles including an air pressure adjustment and fuel. The solid stop would line the No. 09 machine up on row 10 in the 20th position for the final 85 laps.

A strong chassis and smart driving would keep the No. 09 machine inside the top-20 for the rest of the afternoon. Crew chief Brad Parrott and the Zaxby’s team worked throughout the remainder of the race to gain the two laps they lost early on but were unsuccessful due long green flag racing. However, Townley was able to gain two positions in the closing 10 laps to finish 18th, two laps down to race winner Clint Bowyer.

Up next for the No. 09 Zaxby’s team is Kansas Speedway for the Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday, October 3rd. Townley has one prior start at the 1.5-mile oval finishing 15th in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series Kansas Lottery $150 Grad.

This is a previous chassis from the Roush Fenway Racing stables that Matt Kenseth drove to victory lane in 2006 at BMS and also happens to be the same chassis that Townley piloted in March at BMS bringing home his series best finish of 16th.

John Wes Townley at Bristol: 19-year-old Raybestos Rookie contender, John Wes Townley will head back to Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend where he brought home a pair of career firsts and still his best qualifying and finish of 2009.
What is your mindset going into Bristol knowing that it’s a track where anything can happen?

“Bristol is a fast short track with a lot of side by side racing but it is a track where anything can happen. I consider it one part luck and the other part survival. We had a good run there earlier this year so I hope to start where we left off and bring home a top-15 finish for everyone at Zaxby’s and RAB Racing.

The road course racing specialist brought the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford Fusion home 11th; posting RAB Racing’s first top-15 finish of 2009.

The solid effort was Said’s fourth top-15 finish in seven NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at The Glen. Additionally, the Carlsbad, CA native closed the gap on 33rd in the 2009 championship owner point standings. The No. 09 entry currently sits 34th in points; just 159 points out of 33rd and 286 markers outside the top-30.

Said was part of group six in the five-car packs to take time during the European-style qualifying on Saturday morning; touring the 2.45-mile road course in 73.184 seconds (120.518 mph). The No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford would post its best qualifying effort in 22 attempts; starting 9th in the 82-lap feature later that afternoon.

Starting on the inside of row five in the first of two road course events on the 2009 schedule, Boris put a fuel strategy to work before he even took the green flag. Crew chief Brad Parrott had decided before the race that the No. 09 machine would pit around laps 13 and 46 and that is exactly what they did.

On lap 14 Said was one of the first drivers to make the trip down pit road, bringing the yellow and blue Zaxby’s machine in under green for gas only and would return to the racing surface 39th. Just one lap later the leaders began making their way down pit road.

When the second of six yellow flags were displayed on lap 35, Said was running just inside the top-20. Parrott opted to bring Said down pit road for 4 tires and an air pressure adjustment, the No. 09 machine would be scored 23rd when racing resumed on lap 37.

Said would gain one more position before the yellow flag would be displayed on lap 45 for a spin in the inner loop. Parrott would bring the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford down pit road inside their pit window for fuel only. Seven out of the top-10 drivers to leave pit road took four tires so when racing resumed on lap 47 the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford would restart 10th; gaining nine spots on pit road.

While the Zaxby’s Ford would be good on fuel over the closing 35 laps, other teams were right outside their fuel windows. However, three caution flags for 10 laps would give the leaders the few extra laps they needed to finish the race.

Said would run competitively inside the top-15 over the final laps and be scored 12th on the final restart at lap 76. On the final lap of competition Said would gain two positions to finish 11th and Marcos Ambrose would go on to win his second consecutive race at Watkins Glen.

Next up for Boris Said and RAB Racing is the Napa Auto Parts 200 presented by Dodge at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada on Sunday, August 30th. Said has made two starts at the 2.71-mile road course bringing home one top-5 finish.

Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender, John Wes Townley will be back behind the wheel of the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford Fusion next weekend at Michigan International Speedway. The 19-year-old rookie has one start at the 2-mile D-shaped oval starting 8th and finishing 13th in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series Racing for Wildlife 200.

Townley and the No. 09 Zaxby’s Racing team suffered from a mechanical failure early on, but a never never-quit attitude paid off with a 29th-place finish on Saturday.

On Thursday 50 teams took to the track for a six hour practice session before the official track schedule began on Friday. Townley was one of only a handful of driver’s that have ever toured the .875-mile oval. The Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender ran lap times competitively in the top-20 for most of the afternoon. However, just halfway through the session Townley was involved in an incident coming out of turn-4 with the No. 77 machine of Peyton Sellers. Both teams would be forced to pull out their back-up cars.

With just one hour remaining in the six hour practice session, Townley would get back out on the track and post his fastest lap of the afternoon 23.845 seconds (134.972 mph) placing the rookie 16th fastest on the board.

Due to such a hefty practice on Thursday the No. 09 team would only participate in the first of two practice sessions on Friday posting the 21st fastest time overall and the sixth fastest time of the 20 go-or-go home cars.

In time trials on Saturday, the Watkinsville, GA native was the 33rd of 50 cars to take time. His fast lap of 23.731 seconds (132.738 mph) was good enough to lock the No. 09 machine into the field with a 30th-place starting position.

When the 43-car field took the green flag in the third Dash-4-Cash event of the season Townley was sitting comfortably inside row 15. Just four laps into the 250-lap event he experienced a trackbar mount break which caused the right rear tire to expire, ultimately sending the No. 09 machine into the turn-2 wall. The Zaxby’s crew would spend just over 40 laps in the garage fixing the carnage on the machine.

John Wes Townley

Townley would return to the track in the 43rd position on lap 45. Due to being so many laps down crew chief Brad Parrott opted to make this a “no-pressure test” for the rookie. He focused on hitting his marks and making consistent lap times on the track and the Zaxby’s Racing team worked on solid pit stops off the track.

Townley plotted his way up the scoreboard over the next 200 laps and was shown 29th on the scoreboard when the checkered flag was displayed on lap 250. Brad Keselowski would make the winning pass against Kyle Busch to bring home his second NNS victory of 2009.

Due to the efforts of the 19-year-old rookie the Zaxby’s Racing team gained one position from 35th to 34th in the season long point standings with 1,309 points; just 334 outside the top-30.

Next up for RAB Racing is the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International on August 8th. Townley will step aside as Boris Said will take the wheel on the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford Fusion.

Said, who has six NASCAR Nationwide Series starts at The Glen including one top-5, two top-10’s and one pole to his credit will be making his debut for RAB Racing at the 2.45-mile road course.

The Watkinsville, GA native was the 42nd of 49 NNS drivers to make a qualifying attempt around the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval. The fast lap of 31.336 seconds (172.326 mph) put Townley 14th on the board and the fastest of the go-or-go home cars.

The 43-car field took the green flag just past 8:30 p.m. ET before an estimated crowd of 70,000. Townley began to lose positions early on due to an ill-handling chassis. When the afternoon’s second caution flag was waved for debris in turn 2, the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford was sitting in the 21st position.

Crew chief Brad Parrott brought the Zaxby’s Ford down pit road for a chassis adjustment, four tires and fuel. However when Townley was exiting pit road the 19-year-old rookie was penalized for speeding and forced to go to the tail end of the longest line. The No. 09 machine would restart 26th when racing resumed on lap 27.

John Wes Townley

Ill-handling conditions did not subside for Townley over the next 40 laps and the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford was scored in the 27th position, one lap down to race leader Kyle Busch when the evenings third caution flag was displayed on lap 71 for debris on the frontstretch.

Once again Parrott brought Townley to pit road for sticker tires and fuel and due to excellent work by the Zaxby’s Racing crew the No. 09 Ford would restart 24th one lap down to the leader on lap 74.

The No. 09 machine finally began working to Townley’s liking and the rookie began running lap times as fast as cars in the top-12. However, on lap 87 the No. 47 machine of Michael McDowell would get loose in turn 4 collecting Townley and ultimately ending the Zaxby’s Racing team’s night early.

Joey Logano would go on to win the Meijer 300 at Kentucky Speedway and Townley would be scored in the 32nd position, 113 laps down.

The Zaxby’s Racing No. 09 Ford gained one position, to 34th in the NASCAR Nationwide Series owner point standings; 297 markers outside the top-30.

Up next for John Wes Townley and RAB Racing is the NorthernTool.com 250 from the Milwaukee Mile on Saturday, June 20th. Coverage for the event begins at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

RAB Racing along with SPS, Zaxby’s and help from the entire Nationwide Series garage were able to collect over $13,000.00 for the American Red Cross Nashville Chapter.

RAB Racing would like to extend a special “Thank You” to all of those that contributed to make the Team Fund Challenge a complete success. Through various efforts the Nationwide Series garage was able to raise over $22,000.00 this weekend to benefit the Nashville area American Red Cross.

The RAB Racing team’s success off the track overflowed to the track on Friday evening after the Raybestos Rookie graced the charts during final practice with a lap time of 30.18 seconds (158.96 mph.) placing Townley 11th overall; and the second fastest go-or-go home car behind fifth place, Sean Caisse.

John Wes Townley

Townley was the 43rd out of 45 cars to take time during Saturday afternoon’s time trials. His quick lap of 30.153 seconds (159.148 mph) was good enough to lock the Watkinsville, GA native into the field with a 14th place starting position.

When the 43-car field took the green flag in just the second Nationwide Series stand-alone event of 2009 the No. 09 Zaxby’s Ford was sitting comfortably in row seven. As lap one was put in the history books, Townley experienced a left rear tire go flat on lap two of the 225-lap event; ultimately sending Townley up the track into the turn-4 wall.

Townley would be scored in the 42nd position 223 laps down to race winner, Kyle Busch after failing to make it back out on the track.

The unfavorable result leaves the No. 09 team 35th in owners points; 209 points outside the top-30.

Up next for John Wes Townley and RAB Racing is the Meijer 300 presented by Ritz at Kentucky Speedway. Townley has three previous starts in 2008 at the 1.5-mile oval; including his best finish of fifth in the May 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series, Drive Smart! Buckle Up Kentucky 150.
