Under the new qualifying procedures, it was series Sunoco Rookie of the Year (ROTY) contender, Dylan Kwasniewski, with a qualifying lap speed of 192.078 mph, capturing his first career pole by winning the 21 Means 21 Pole Award. Kwasniewski, with his pole,  also became the first rookie to win a pole at Daytona since Rusty Wallace did it in 1985; as well as, becoming the first rookie to win a pole in his debut in the series since Scott Speed did it in 2009.
